Sir Integral Hellsing sat at her large desk, glowering down at a couple of sheets of paper. In one hand she held a lit cigar and in the other she held a pen. She just stared down at her paperwork, but her eyes were distant as her thoughts drifted off to another subject at hand.
It was Tuesday. November the sixteenth.
Her birthday.
Integral closed her eyes and placed the cigar in her mouth. She inhaled, held it for a few passing seconds then exhaled slowly. The thin gray streams of smoke floated up into the air, evaporating from oblivion before it ever got to the ceiling.
It was strange to her. She didn't feel any different than from when she had turned fourteen. It was like time had skipped all the ones in between. It just told her that she never really did care about her birthdays.
They just weren't all that important when she had other things such as controlling the male vampire that was sleeping in her basement.
She lifted her head when she heard a soft knocking outside her door. She placed her pen down and took another intake of smoke then letting it out and calling, "Come in."
The pushed open and an elderly man with black hair and a monocle over his left eye stepped into the room. He walked over to her desk holding a silver tray with a plate of buttered biscuits and a steaming cup of tea place on it. He sat it down near the edge and smiled.
"Your breakfast, miss," he announced, straightening.
"Thank you, Walter," she mumbled, snuffing the cigar out and reaching for a biscuit. It tasted delicious and she rewarded the aging butler with one of her rare, beautiful smiles. He bowed at the waist and strode back to the door. Before he closed it, however, he looked up and watched her eat.
"Happy twenty-fourth birthday, miss," he said and closed the door.
Integral looked up. She was surprised he even remembered. And to think he did warmed her heart and made a sad smile appear on her face. Funny how everyone else, even herself sometimes, forget such events.
She stared down at her biscuit then at the papers setting next to her on the desk. Her saddened eyes hardened in sudden determination.
"It's my birthday," she declared as she set her half-bitten biscuit back on the plate. "Therefore I should be enjoying this day instead of sitting here in this damned room doing endless paperwork!" Her hands fisted and she slammed them down angrily on the desk, the teacup shaking slightly from the vibration.
"Damn it all! Damn the FREAKS and their ghouls! Damn this organization! Damn the Queen and her demands! It's my bloody birthday and I refuse to miss out on it again like I did all the others!"
Her blue eyes fairly glowed with her determination and stubbornness. She huffed and pushed her chair out and stalked to the door. Nothing, not even if the gate's of hell opened up and brought forth Satan himself, would stop her from enjoying the twenty-forth year she had endured since born.
"Walter," Integral called as she walked up to him in the large den. The man looked over from his dusting and smiled warmly.
"Ah, hello," he greeted.
"Yes, hello. I was wondering if there is anything . . . er, preferable to wear for a casual outing?" She tried to avoid his curious gaze somewhat. Everyone knew she didn't go out unless it was important or if was on business.
"And what do you have in mind, exactly?" he asked, turning away from the shelves to face her completely. He eyed her as she fidgeted and toyed with her blue bow tie. This was rather unexpected to him, something a new actually.
"Something more . . . ah, feminine," she finally managed to get out. A surprised look overcame his old, yet still handsome features.
"I believe your father had stored most of your mother's clothes in the attic. Would you like me to help you?" She shook her head.
"That will not be necessary, Walter. Thank you for the offer," she said and walked out of the room. He watched her leave and stood there a few moments. He finally turned back to his chores, confused and happy at the same time.
"Sir Integral is finally doing something different for a change. How nice," he said to himself then began to hum a small, cheerful tune.
The large wooden lid flew open and a thick cloud of dust flew up into Integral's face, causing her to reel back and cough wildly. She covered her nose and mouth and waved a hand around her, scattering the dust out and away. She looked back up and blinked a few times.
She then scooted closer to the trunk and peered inside. Many soft, no doubt expensive, dresses and gown were folded neatly and carefully one on top of the other. She pushed her glasses up slightly and pulled some of the items out, looking them over in awe and wonder.
Upon looking over her mother's clothes, Integral also came across many priceless jewels, papers, and even a small little diary. Her eyes misted and she quickly blinked back oncoming tears.
She didn't remember her mother much at all. Her father told her she had died only a ce ofe of years after her birth and her father had had a nanny hired to care for her while he went out on business trips or to important meetings.
Integral brushed her long, moonlit blonde hair over her shoulders and she stroked the small pearl buttons on a silky, deep blue blouse. Under it was a smooth, mid-thigh the exact same color as the blouse. She eyed it warily. Her mother wore such things?!
She looked below the skirt and found a matching pair of slacks. She breathed a sigh and took them out and placed the skirt back. She placed the items over the trunk lid and searched some more. She found a long, khaki trench coat with folded cuffs and black buttons, and a pair of black, high-heel boots.
"Hmmm, should I?" she mused, running her fingers over the clothes she had picked out. A small, daring smile crossed her lips and she quickly grabbed her mother's things, kicked the trunk closed with her foot and hurried out of the attic and to her room before someone saw her.
"Walter, I'm going out."
The butler turned from his reading to look up. His mouth fell open and his eyes widened, the monocle popping off his face. He quickly grabbed it and placed it back over his eye, holding it there.
There stood the stunning figure of Sir Integral Hellsing. Instead of wearing those God-awful men's suits, she was dressed in a royal blue blouse and slacks that clung to every feminine curve on her body.
Instead of the brown dress shoes, she walked in black boots with thick, one-inch heels. Over her clothes she had on a khaki trench coat that fell to her calves and fitted her perfectly.
Her long, moonlit hair was pulled back and up into a neat bun and a small, silver chain choker was wrapped snuggly around her slender neck, the tiny silver heart pendent swinging slightly every time she turned her head.
She was slipping one a pair of black leather gloves when she saw Walter just staring at her. She suddenly became uneasy and looked herself over, thinking there was something wrong with her clothes. When she found nothing, her eyes leveled with his again.
"What is it?" she finally asked. Walter blinked, as if in a trance. He brought a fist to his mouth and coughed, clearing his throat and trying to ignore his embarrassm
"Nothing, miss. It's just that you caught this old dog by surprise," he said, smiling in admiration at her uncanny beauty.
"Oh?" she said, her cheeks heating up at such a compliment. "How so?"
"Well, let's put it this way. If I learn a man decides to call you unpleasant to look at, I will have no choice but to hunt the poor bastard down and give him a good thrashing. Just enough to have him open his eyes wider."
"You will get nowhere with such flattery," she said as she smiled in appreciation. Walter chuckled.
"May I ask where you're off to?" he asked.
"I've decided that I need a break from all of this," she said, waving her hands about. "And it's my birthday so I think I deserve a little peace, so I'm going to explore the city some then eat dinner at a restaurant. No need to worry about me tonight then, alright?"
"Wait, how long are you going to be out exactly?" he asked, becoming uneasy. Integral glowered at him some what and sighed.
"Does it really matter?" When he didn't answer she said, "I don't know. Late, so don’t fret if I don't get back until nine or ten tonight." She then walked down the hall toward the door. Walter choked and leaped from the chair and followed her.
"But, Miss Hellsing, what about Alucard and?"
"I'm sure you can handle them," she stated coolly. "Just give thech ach a blood bag and go about your business. If either ask where I am tell them that I've went out and if I come back to find even a speck of dust out if place, I will have them both de-fanged permanently. Understood?"
"Yes," he said.
"Good. See you later tonight, Walter," she said and stepped outside, pulling the collar of the coat up to shield her from the chilling wind somewhat. He closed the door softly behind her and heaved a heavy sigh.
"This is going to be one long night . . . "
Deep in the dark, slightly damp sat two very large coffins. One of the lids rose up and a man with short ebony hair sat up and stretched. He let out a long yawn, his lengthened crannies flashing into view. He mumbled something under his breath and rubbed his red-wine eyes.
He looked over and watched as the coffin next to him opened. A young girl with spiky blonde hair sat up and cracked her neck before giving him a sleepy smile.
"Ah, have a nice sleep, police girl?" he asked as he hopped out of his bed.
"I'm still getting used to closed spaces, master," she mumbled and stifled a yawn with her hand. He chuckled and strolled up the stairs. Instead of simply opening the door, he slid right through it and into the hall.
He walked through the empty halls, his hands clasped behind his back. He found Walter busying himself in the kitchen. There were measuring cups, spoons, bags of sugar, and eggshells all over the counters and he watched silently as the man ran around the kitchen.
Finally he stepped into the room and said, "For a person who cleans up after everyone else you obviously can't clean up behind yourself. How very odd. By the way, hello." Walter paused enough to glare at him before turning away.
"Good evening, Alucard," he said. The vampire looked around the messy room and spotted a cookbook propped up on the counter. He watched Walter from the corner of his eye as he walked cautiously over to the book.
He bent down and brought a gloved hand up and ran a finger down the page with a chocolate cake picture in the corner. A slender black eyebrow rose slightly and he asked, still looking at the page, " 'Death By Chocolate'. Baking a cake? For whom?"
"Miss Hellsing," Walteplieplied curtly. That got Alucard's full attention. He straightened and watched as the old man shoved a round pan into the oven, then closed the door. Walter looked at his watch then up at him.
"For Master? Whatever for?"
"For a creature is as intelligent and cunning as you are, you would think you'd know what day it is," Walter said in a disgusted tone. Just then Seras walked in as Alucard answered.
"Hmm, is it 'No Limitation to Bloodsucking Day'?" Walter's face darkened somewhat and he shook his head.
"No."
" 'Alucard Will Finally Be Set Free Day' "?
"No!"
Seras blinked as she watched her master come up will silly event names and Walter denying them, seemingly getting angrier and angrier by the second.
"Erm, what are we talking about?" she asked. Alucard turned from the now fuming butler and to her.
"Walter is baking a cake for my master and he's mad that I don't know what day it is!"
"Is it Sir Integral's birthday?" she guessed, looking at Walter.
"Yes!" he shouted. Alucard snapped his fingers and frowned slightly.
"You know, I always seem to forget that one," he said and turned to Walter's back. "Why are you baking her a cake? She doesn't care. Never has."
"Tell her that when she gets back," he grumbled, walking over to the sink to wash his hands.
"What? You mean she's not here? Where is she?"
"Out taking the day off."
Alucard was a little taken back by all this. His master was actually avoiding her work today? And she was out running around? He found that very, very odd. Then a grin broke out on his face as he thought of all the things that he could do while she was gone. He began rubbing his hands together then turned to his own servant.
"Come, police girl! We have some things I've always wanted to do and--" he was interrupted by Walter, stopping him in mid-walk.
"Ah, before you do anything, Alucard, Miss Hellsing also told me to tell you that if anything was out of place when she came back she would have you de-fanged for the rest of eternity." Alucard frowned and placed his foot back on the ground.
"Even when she's away she still spoils my fun," he grumbled. Seras giggled and watched as the male vampire walked sulkily out of the kitchen.
"Poor master," she laughed. She turned to Walter and smiled. "Can I help you with anything?"
"Why, yes, I believe I could use an extra hand, Miss Victoria," he said and told her what to do as he read a few things from the cookbook.
Alucard wondered through the halls, bored and over come with restlessness, but most of all, guilt. He leaned up against a wall and let out a sigh. How could he have forgotten about her birthday?!
Sure, she always refused to celebrate it or even acknowledge it, her excuse being that she had too much more important things to get done. But up till now it had actually slipped his mind. And this made his already gloomy mood darken more.
Alucard pushed himself from the wall and continued in the direction of his chambers, all the while his thoughts whirling about in his head.
He had to do something for her, anything. On most occasions he would've just scoffed and said the hell with it, because sometimes he felt she just didn't deserve anything from him. But he also knew the reason behind all those glares, insults, and cold shoulders she also seemed to give him when he was in her presence.
She had never had a really celebrated a birthday ever since her thirteenth one because of her father's death and the duty placed heavily on her shoulders at such a young age.
He knew all about the small presents and candle blowing she received from Walter and a few other men working for her, but that was it. What could he do? He had nothing to present to her . . .
A smile, mischievous and boyish as it was, slid its way onto his lips. An excellent idea had just come to him. Though he didn't have anything to actually hand her, he figured some of the best presents you could give a person couldn't be wrapped.
He chuckled and slid through the door of the basement. He floated down to the beds and reached into a dark, shadowy corner and dragged out a large trunk. He kneeled down before it and flicked up the locks and slowly opened the lid.
"Hopefully I won't get shot or throttle because of my sense of kindness," he mumbled as he pulled out a bottle and looked at it's label.
Integral dabbed her mouth with a napkin and got a waiter's attention, asking him for the bill. After paying and leaving a tip, the young woman walked out of the restaurant and into the chilly evening.
The moment she looked up into the darkening sky, she groaned aloud. She didn't really want to have to put up with her vampire servant when she got back. It had been an extraordinary day for her. She never knew how refreshing and peaceful it was to just take a simple walk around without having to fight off ghouls or FREAKS.
The moonlit hair beauty walked down the sidewalks, nodding slightly to couples walking by and looking at her curiously. All she wanted to do now was get home, soak in a steamy hot bath, and hopefully get some peaceful rest without being disturbed.
"Ah, welcome back, Sir Integral!" Walter greeted with a smile on his wrinkled face. She nodded and he stepped away for her to enter. She breathed in the familiar warm, stale air. It was nothing like fresh air. She sighed and started out into the hall when she smelled a sweet, alluring aroma.
She raised an eyebrow and looked into the den, spotting a circular, dark brown cake with quite a few lit, white candles. She walked over to it and looked at it.
"Happy 24th Birthday" was written in light blue icing. She bit her trembling lip and turned away then looked up just as Walter and Seras walked in. They both had proud grins on their faces.
"You made this didn't you?" she whispered. They both nodded and she turned to face the cake again. Her vision blurred slightly as she fought back unwanted tears.
"Thank you both," she said, hardening her tone. Walter walked up to her side and smiled slyly.
"Well?" he said. She looked at him oddly.
"Well what?"
"Make a wish-" Seras said happily as she walked up to her other side.
"And blow out the candles," Walter finished, waving his hand to the cake. Integral suddenly laughed. It was so silly that she couldn't help it. It shocked Walter and Seras and she waved a dismissing hand.
"Sorry. It's just that doing that childish ritual seems foolish for an adult. Don't you?"
"Not at all, Sir." Walter said, blinking.
"Right! Yes, wishing and blowing out the candles is the one thing I love the most about having my birthday!" the female vampire sighed dreamily. Integral stared at the cake, the small orange flames flickering back and forth in the dim room.
"Oh all right," she breathed. "By the way, where's Alucard?"
"I honestly don't know, Sir."
"I'm sure he went down to the chambers," Seras said. Integral nodded and sighed in relief. As long as he stayed down there while she humored her servants, she was free of any teasing that might include "you're too old for wishing" or "did you wish for a pony or a large teddy bear?".
But little did any of them know what was lurking in the furthest region of the room. Blood-red eyes watched intensely from the ominous shadows. Watched as Integral sat down in front of the cake. Watched as she closed her eyes for a few passing moments then blow the twenty-four candles out all at once. The eyes closed and the shadows suddenly disappeared.
