THE BLACKMAIL OF
SOULS
“Close the doors, put out the light
You know they won’t be home tonight
The snow falls hard and don’t you know
The winds of Thor are blowing cold
They’re wearing steel that’s bright and true
They carry news that must get through
They choose the path where no one goes
They hold no quarter
They ask no quarter
Walking side by side with death
The Devil mocks their every step
The snow drives back the foot that’s slow
The Dogs of Doom are howling more
They carry news that must get through
To build a dream for me and you
They choose the path where no one goes
They hold no quarter
They ask no quarter”

Chapter One:
SINS
Tokumaru Tatsumi rapped
lightly on the door leading to Saori Kido’s office.
“Yes?”
she called from within. Tatsumi entered
and bowed respectfully.
“Saori-san,
pardon the intrusion, but a Ms. Lexie Bloodstone is here to see you.”
“Thank
you, Tatsumi. Please show her in.”
“Hai!” Tatsumi again bowed deeply and left the room
to fetch Saori’s visitor, closing the door behind him. The mid-morning winter sun blazed through the
window, saturating the room with a pleasant radiance. Saori remained seated behind her large mahogany
desk, staring at the crisscross windowpane shadows cast upon the floor. An icy expression belied her
nervousness. Though only a few years
older than Saori, Lexie Bloodstone had already established a well-known
reputation in the field of investigative journalism. In the process, she had also gathered a few
powerful and dangerous enemies. After
appearing out of nowhere and taking the media world by storm in just two short
years, she had managed to survive a number of miscarried kidnappings and even
an attempt on her life. Saori rather
admired her, which was the main reason she had agreed to the visit in the first
place, but she also knew it would be foolish to let her guard down. It was said that once Lexie Bloodstone began
a story, there was no stopping her.
Tatsumi returned, opening the door to allow the young reporter entrance
into the room. Saori studied her as she
strode confidently toward the desk. She
was immediately envious of the young woman’s appearance. Although a bit taller, her proportions were
about the same as Saori’s, and she had been blessed with luxurious,
waist-length auburn hair. The sunlight
reflected clearly in her large, amiable, coffee-brown eyes. She wore a peach-colored turtleneck, jeans
and supple brown leather boots. It was a
simple outfit, but on Lexie it was quite stunning. Saori suddenly wished she too had worn
something more casual and stylish instead of her extremely formal, antebellum
dress.
“Miss
Kido, it’s a pleasure to meet you! I
would sincerely like to thank you for this opportunity. I know you rarely grant interviews,” Lexie
began graciously, extending a hand toward the mauve-eyed girl. Saori accepted it, shaking politely.
“Ms.
Bloodstone, until today I have never granted an interview...to anyone.” Saori motioned for Lexie to seat herself in
one of the chairs positioned near the front of the desk.
Lexie
scanned her surroundings. The opulently
decorated office suitably impressed her.
She then focused her attention on the incredibly wealthy Saori Kido.
“Oh,
do please call me Lexie,” she offered, smiling warmly.
“Then
I must insist that you call me Saori.”
Although
she tried to remain as impersonal and officious as possible, Saori could not
stop the corners of her mouth from turning up.
She did not know what to make of this young woman. Saori did not exactly trust the young woman,
but there was something inexplicably bright and genuine in her demeanor that
made Saori feel safe and comfortable in her presence, as if she had known Lexie
Bloodstone for quite some time. Saori
did not have many female acquaintances.
She could not think of one girl whom she might consider a close
friend. She had spent nearly her
entirely life surrounded by males. Even
at boarding school, Mitsumasa Kido had made sure Saori was sequestered from the
other girls. The only females she had
contact with in her early years were the prudish, ancient matrons at
school. She was almost jealous of the
easygoing manner in which Miho and Shunrei interacted with each other. Saori never really felt comfortable around
either of them, and she knew they felt the same toward her. Although she had known them for years due to
their association with Seiya and Shiryu, they were far from being her
friends. Youth and privilege could not
spare Saori from the bitter sting of loneliness. She clasped her hands primly atop her desk,
waiting patiently as Lexie rummaged through her large shoulder bag, eventually
producing a pen and a small notebook.
The young reporter smiled apologetically.
“As
you’re probably aware, I’m preparing a series of articles regarding the history
of the Graude Foundation. My
investigations have yielded some fascinating but rather limited
information. Even you would have to
admit the origins and activities of this company are somewhat...secretive. The Graude Foundation has a reputation of
being rather impenetrable.”
“The
Graude Foundation...or me?”
“Well,
perhaps a little of both,” Lexie admitted sheepishly.
Saori
relaxed a bit more, her self-assurance buoyed by Lexie’s affable manner. “I...um...read your piece on the Galaxian
Wars.”
“Oh? What did you think?” Lexie asked, raising a
dark, delicate eyebrow.
“Frankly,
I thought it was a bit harsh,” Saori answered honestly, trying not to sound too
defensive.
“Hmmm...that
was one of my most successful articles.
No matter how popular that spectacle may have been, I’m still of the
opinion that children fighting children for sport is on the harsh side as
well.”
Saori
could not determine if she was being facetious or simply honest.
Lexie
continued. “I suppose the point is moot
since the coliseum was mysteriously destroyed...and the league disbanded, I
assume?”
Saori
nodded curtly, but found she could not answer.
The feeling of unease had quickly returned, prickling up the back of her
neck. Lexie Bloodstone was an outsider
and had no right to judge her grandfather’s vision. She glared at the impudent girl, but the
warning look did nothing to still the reporter’s tongue.
“Now
that I think about it, my readers might be very interested in knowing what
became of the young fighters. I don’t
suppose you’d be willing to provide current details on those poor boys?”
Saori
felt strangely betrayed by Lexie. She
finally responded, but her words bathed in suspicion. “Ms. Bloodstone, just exactly why are you
here? If you are planning to write some
tawdry expose’ on my grandfather or the Graude Foundation, you will have no
cooperation from me! In fact, I will do
everything in my power to bar any such trash from being printed about my
family!”
Lexie
was unmoved by Saori’s outburst. “It
just so happens that I have already gathered some information on the
Foundation’s dealings, some of which are disturbing to say the least. Are you aware that approximately 10 years
ago, the Graude Foundation invested quite heavily in floundering orphanages all
over the world?”
“What
is so wrong with that?” Saori asked angrily.
“Mitsumasa Kido was a very generous man!”
“Yes,
no doubt. However, those same orphanages
were suddenly closed a few weeks after the Graude Foundation’s ‘generosity’…and
furthermore, there are no records on the whereabouts of the children. What happened to them all, Miss Kido?”
Saori
sat in stunned silence, her eyes widening in disbelief.
“There were literally hundreds of
homeless orphans, and they seemed to have simply vanished from the face of the
earth.” Lexie paused, watching Saori’s
face closely for any hint of acknowledgement.
“It may also interest you to know that around the same time, there was a
rash of unsolved child snatchings in several countries...some involving the
coincidental death of the parents.
Again, no trace of these children was ever found. Don’t you find that disturbing?”
“Wh-what
are you saying?” Saori stammered.
“Isn’t
it obvious, Miss Kido? I’m saying that
your kindly, benevolent grandfather stole those children to use for his own
sick purposes!”
“What
sick purposes?” Saori demanded, her eyes glinting with animosity.
“The
Galaxian Wars for one...and if I dig deeply enough, I’m sure I’ll find a few
more Kido skeletons waiting to be unearthed!”
Saori
leaped to her feet. “Get out! I will not listen to anymore of your filthy
lies!”
“Oh,
I assure you they are not lies. I have
the proof if you care to see it.”
“I
demand that you leave here at once!”
Saori trembled with rage.
“Not
before I inform you of one more little fact about your dear old grandpa. He was on a rather large number of mood
altering substances...prescribed by a psychiatrist, of course. Mitsumasa Kido was apparently quite insane.”
Saori
ran to the door and opened it.
“Tatsumi!” she shouted.
“Tatsumi-san!”
Lexie
sighed. “All right, Miss Kido. Call off your dogs. I’m leaving.”
She rose from her seat, picked up her bag and walked slowly toward the
open door. She paused as she passed by
the obviously agitated Saori.
“You know, he may have done some
wonderful things long ago, but that does not excuse your grandfather from the
pain and terror he inflicted on so many lives,” Lexie said quietly. “I will continue my investigation...with or
without your cooperation.” She noticed
the distraught look in Saori’s eyes and was suddenly filled with sympathy. Lexie regretted the way in which she had
ambushed Saori. After all, it was Mitsumasa
Kido in whom she was interested, not Saori.
As far as Lexie knew, the girl really had no clue that the man she knew
as her grandfather had been lying to her all those years. Perhaps together she and Saori could discover
the truths they were both seeking.
“Saori-san,
I’ll be in Tokyo
for the next 3 or 4 days. You can reach
me at the Okura Hotel if you change your mind and wish to discuss this
further.”
Saori
turned her head away, unable to meet the reporter’s gaze. “Please...just go.”
Lexie
nodded and proceeded to leave, exiting through the front door of the
mansion. As she walked swiftly toward
her candle-apple red convertible parked in the driveway, she heard Tatsumi’s
angry shout.
“You
there! Stop!”
Lexie
ignored him. She reached out to open the
driver’s side door, but a powerful hand gripped her elbow. She moved like lightning, instantly grabbing
Tatsumi’s wrist with her free hand and deftly flipping the substantially larger
man to the graveled pavement. He landed
flat on his back, gasping loudly as the air was knocked from his lungs.
“You
should know the strength of your opponents before you attack them, Tatsumi-san.” She smiled sweetly down at him, then entered
her vehicle and drove away, spraying jagged pebbles in all directions.
Inside
her office, Saori paced nervously. A
worried frown darkened her face. Tatsumi
limped into the room.
“I’m
sorry, Saori-san. She...um...left before
I could stop her.”
“That’s
all right, Tatsumi...”
“Is
something wrong?” Tatsumi fussed over
her like a mother hen.
“I
don’t know. Lexie Bloodstone could be
serious trouble...for all of us!” She
moved to the window, solemnly peering out at the manicured grounds and the bare
trees cheerfully disguised under a light coating of snow.
“Tatsumi,
please get the car.”

Hyoga
leaned against the doorframe that led into the spacious kitchen. Shun was there, wearing his favorite gray sweat
suit and rummaging through the refrigerator.
He was bent over, head buried inside the large appliance, his rear end
swaying rhythmically to the music that blared from a small radio on the
countertop.
“The tide is high but I’m holding on
I’m gonna be your number one...”
Hyoga
smiled, enjoying the view. Shun emerged
from the refrigerator with a can of aerosol whipped topping. He shook the can vigorously, then tilted his
head back and pointed the nozzle directly into his mouth, filling it with
ribbons of sweet foamy cream until it overflowed and dripped down his
chin. As he tried to swallow, his cheeks
puffed out, giving him the appearance of a squirrel storing nuts in its
mouth. Hyoga could not stop himself from
laughing out loud at the sight. Shun
jumped slightly, startled by Hyoga’s presence, and a bit embarrassed by his
gluttonous display. He quickly replaced
the can and shut the refrigerator door, trying to lick away the stray remnants
of thick white cream. Hyoga moved
swiftly towards him, still chuckling at Shun’s predicament. He placed an arm around the boy’s waist and
pulled him close. Shun attempted to
resist but his words were cut off by Hyoga’s mouth. He kissed the boy generously, using his
tongue to clean away the remaining traces of sweetness from Shun’s lips and
chin. The boy gave in to the loving
attention, melting into Hyoga’s secure embrace.
He flung both arms around the Cygnus Saint’s neck, standing on tiptoes
in order to return the deliciously warm kisses.
After several moments, they paused, breathless, lost in each other’s
eyes.
“Sugoi,
Hyoga-san! We need to do that more
often!”
“Da,
Shun, but next time we should definitely use more cream!”
“Oh,
yes...and chocolate sauce!”
“Mmmm...” Hyoga’s thoughts reeled at the
possibilities. He attacked Shun’s mouth
again, parting the boy’s lips with his tongue, slipping it inside. Shun mirrored Hyoga’s actions
enthusiastically, imparting soft moans between breaths. Hyoga knew the situation could easily
escalate beyond his control if they continued on such a dangerous path. It took every ounce of restraint to keep from
laying Shun down on the cool white tiles and taking the boy right there on the
kitchen floor...or the countertop...or bent over the sink. Hyoga pulled back with great effort.
“Little
one, we must stop,” he panted.
“But...why?”
Shun pleaded, his cheeks blushed a rosy pink.
Hyoga
breathed deeply, very aware of the hardness pressing against the inside of his
pants. He wanted Shun badly but it was
neither the time nor the place to move their relationship to another
level. It would be the first time for
both of them and Hyoga wanted their eventual lovemaking to be very
special. He wanted it to be romantic and
memorable, not just a ‘quickie’ on the kitchen floor of the Kido mansion. He wasn’t exactly certain that Shun was ready
for such a major step...or if Shun even wanted him to be his first. There were so many other issues to consider
as well...Ikki being the foremost. After
all, Ikki was his greatest competition for Shun’s affection, though neither of
them would likely admit it. Hyoga would
gladly give his life for Shun without hesitation, but not at the hands of an
angry Phoenix Saint! The entire
situation was incredibly delicate, and at the center of it all was the divine
seraph Shun. The last thing Hyoga ever
wanted was to cause the boy any unnecessary anguish. He could certainly wait until the time was
right...for both of them.
“Shun,
we just need to stop now, OK? I’ve got
to pack for my trip, and the others will be back soon.”
“So? I don’t care!” Shun buried his face in Hyoga’s neck,
tightening his hold around the older boy.
“Why do you have to leave anyway?” he demanded, lower lip quivering.
“I’ve
been planning this trip for many months, krasivii zvyzda. I need to visit some old friends back home.”
“Well...why
can’t I go with you?”
“You
know Ikki has been looking forward to spending time with you, Shun.”
The
boy sighed in resignation. “I know...but
I’ll miss you!” He hugged the Cygnus
Saint like a drowning man clinging to a life preserver. Hyoga gasped at the boy’s powerful grip. He laughed softly.
“I’ll
miss you too, my darling, but I’ll only be gone for a little while...I
promise!”
Shun
sniffled back a tear. Hyoga rubbed the
younger Saint’s back and shoulders with rough affection.
“Listen,
Shun, why don’t we take out the proto-bike?”
“I
guess so,” he answered dejectedly.
“I
think you’re ready for a solo ride, don’t you?”
Shun
immediately brightened. “Really?” He hopped around the kitchen excitedly,
clapping his hands.
Hyoga
laughed again. “OK, now go suit up! I’ll get the machine ready.”
“Choudoii!”
Shun shouted and raced upstairs to his bedroom.
Hyoga
watched the boy leave, his eyes brimming with love. He moved to the radio, pausing briefly to
listen to the music.
“Every time I see you falling
I get down on my knees and pray
I’m waiting for that final moment
You say the words that I can’t say...”
He
reached out and switched it off, wondering if he would be able to control
himself the next time he and Shun were lucky enough to be alone together.

As
Tatsumi drove the vintage black Rolls Royce toward Tokyo Bay,
Saori fretted in the back seat, her stomach a knot of worry. Lexie Bloodstone’s accusations haunted her as
she stared absently at the winter countryside streaking past in never-ending
horizontal brushstrokes of gray, white, black and gold. Saori tried desperately to occupy her mind,
but her thoughts swam unavoidably to the past.
As
much as she hated to admit it, the truth was her grandfather had actually been
a distant and extremely busy man. She
could not recall his presence at any of the significant events of her
childhood. She knew nothing of her
parents, and he had never spoken of them.
She had also wondered about her grandmother and why he had never
mentioned her either. He had left her
upbringing to Tatsumi, the servants at the mansion and schoolteachers. She knew virtually nothing about her
grandfather, and yet she was completely devoted to the memory of Mitsumasa
Kido. When she was a little girl, Saori
never doubted his love for her, but whenever she looked deeply into his eyes,
she noticed something disquieting there.
She was too young to comprehend it at the time, but it always made her
feel uneasy. It wasn’t until many years
later, after battling alongside the Saints against her enemies, that she was
able to finally comprehend the strangeness she had seen behind her
grandfather’s eyes. It was fear. It was only after his death that Saori slowly
came to realize that she had been the cause of his fear. The one thing Saori could never determine,
however, was if he had been afraid for her...or of her. She had always wished that he had better
prepared her for the awakening of Athena and her responsibilities for the
Saints. Perhaps if she had understood
why they were all there and what their eventual purpose was to the world, she
might have been kinder to the boys, and perhaps they would have hated her
less. The Saints were not the only
victims of a stolen childhood. On the surface,
her life may have seemed idyllic to the others, but what they had never known
is that she too had cried herself to sleep on more than one lonely night.
Within
three hours they had arrived at the waterfront apartment home of Pegasus Saint
Seiya. Tatsumi held open the door as
Saori exited the car, clutching a large plain envelope. She paused, breathing in the crisp, cold
salty air. The late morning sun had
broken through the snow-heavy clouds and intensified by the afternoon, melting
the previous night’s snowfall and leaving the blacktopped parking lot shiny and
puddle-filled. Even in the middle of
winter, the entire area seemed vivid and cheerful. Saori relished the soothing sound of waves
lapping against the nearby wooden pier.
“Shall
I accompany you, Miss?” Tatsumi offered.
“No
thank you, Tatsumi. I won’t be
long.” She smiled ruefully at him then
strode gracefully across the asphalt, purposely splashing through a few small,
shallow puddles with an odd satisfaction.
The hem of her gown was soaked with water, and although the winter had
been unseasonably warm, a brisk soft breeze wafted over her, raising goose
flesh on the exposed skin of her arms.
She ascended the stairwell on the outside of the two-story building and
headed toward Seiya’s door. Although she
had previously visited him on a handful of occasions, Saori always imagined she
was an unwelcome intruder at his personal refuge. She wondered if it would have been more
prudent to call the Saint first instead of arriving unannounced, but the
mansion had begun to feel like a tomb and the drive alone had been a welcome
escape. She paused at Seiya’s doorstep,
listening for sounds of movement inside.
Hearing nothing, she rapped sharply on the door.
The
other residents of the Boathouse apartments had deserted their dwellings for
the holidays, and at first Seiya couldn’t have been more pleased. With no one around to complain, he had
blasted his stereo, jammed loudly on his guitar and sung at the top of his
lungs until the wee hours. He hadn’t
heard from his brothers or anyone else at the mansion for quite some time,
which allowed him to relax completely...and also allowed boredom to seep
in. He had never before realized what an
enormous rush he felt while battling and defeating his enemies, and how
addicted he had become to the feeling.
As the weeks passed, Seiya had found it more and more difficult to
occupy his time. Normal activities and
interests in his life seemed pointless and tedious. Not even his visits with Miho and the
children at the orphanage could quell his anxieties. Worst of all, the search for his sister had
stalled and frustration had begun to eat away at him. Unbeknownst to Seiya, he had also developed a
habitual and compulsive need to clean his apartment on a daily basis. He stood in the middle of the living room,
staring at the wall clock mounted above the television, wondering how he was
possibly going to kill the heavy hours of another wearisome evening. Seiya needed action...and soon. An unexpected knock at the door brought a
sudden smile to his face. He sprinted
across the room to answer it, glad for the interruption.
“Saori-san! What a pleasant surprise! What are you doing here? Where are my manners? Please come in!”
“I
do hope I’m not disturbing you.” She was
somewhat bewildered by his overwhelming display of graciousness, but she smiled
politely and removed her shoes before entering.
She briefly inspected the roomy flat.
Saori had never believed the place really suited the Pegasus Saint, and
she was sure he never truly felt at home there either. Though nicely furnished and attractive,
Seiya’s apartment was simply too arranged, orderly and uncomfortably
sterile. But he valued his privacy and
so chose to remain at the Boathouse. Saori
had never fully understood his decision, but she respected it.
“Can
I get you anything? Coffee...tea?”
She
shook her head. “Seiya, I’ll get right
to the point. I need to ask a favor of
you.”
“Sure! You name it, Saori-san!”
She
frowned. He was overly anxious and a
little too eager to please which she found curiously irritating at that
moment. Saori wished he would behave a
bit more seriously. She moved to the
sofa and sat down, placing the envelope on the cushion next to her and folding
her hands neatly in her lap. Seiya
joined her, sitting quite close to the girl. He noticed the water stains on the bottom of
her long dress but said nothing. He
reached over and placed his hands over hers.
“I’m
sorry...I guess I’ve just been a little stir crazy lately. What’s bothering you, Saori?” he spoke
quietly, as if he had read her mind. Her
cold facade cracked a little. Seiya
could be stubborn, inconsiderate and spiteful, but at times he could also be so
kind and sympathetic.
“Seiya,
I’ve done something incredibly stupid...” she whispered, unable to meet his
concerned gaze. She looked toward the
ceiling, shaking her head then buried her face in her hands.
Was
she crying? Seiya could not tell, but he
placed an arm around her shoulders, trying to comfort her in his endearing,
clumsy way. He never knew quite what to
do when she became so emotional. He
hated it when girls cried, especially Saori.
“Um...there, there now...tell me
what you did that was so incredibly stupid,” he gently encouraged. She dropped her hands back into her lap and
took a deep breath.
“Have
you ever heard of Lexie Bloodstone?”
“I
think so. Isn’t she that teenaged girl
reporter who wrote about the Galaxian Wars awhile back?”
“Yes,
that’s right. Well, several weeks ago I
received a call from her. We spoke for
quite some time and... I agreed to an interview...”
“Saori-san! What were you thinking?” Seiya responded in
amazement.
She
wrung her hands, regret darkening her pale eyes. “I don’t know! I guess I was thinking of the
Foundation. We’ve been getting some bad
publicity lately and that reporter was just so convincing. It seemed like a good way to reintroduce my
grandfather’s name and the Foundation to the public in a good light.”
“Let
me guess...this Lexie Bloodstone ambushed you and turned the interview into a
Kido-bashing session.”
“Yes...I
feel like such a fool,” she answered sheepishly. “I don’t know why I trusted her! There was just something in her voice...and
her eyes...”
“So
what is it that you’d like me to do?
Want me to kick her ass for you?” he asked jokingly, looking for a smile
on Saori’s forlorn countenance.
“Seiya,
what I’d like for you to do is keep an eye on Lexie Bloodstone. Sort of follow her...”
“Like
a private investigator?”
She
nodded. “She’s staying downtown at the
Okura for the next few days, and before I turn the matter over to my attorneys,
I’d like to find out who she meets with while she’s in Tokyo.
The Foundation is checking into her past, but I need to know what she’s
doing now.”
“No
problem! This might actually be kind of
fun!” Seiya was genuinely pleased to
help Saori, but at the back of his mind, he wondered what she was trying so
desperately to keep hidden from the rest of the world...and the Saints. “So what does this Lexie Bloodstone look
like?”
Saori
smiled gratefully as she picked up the envelope and removed a few 8x10 glossy
photos. “I’m sorry they’re out of
focus. Strangely, we could locate no
clear images of her. I also had this
composite drawing made of her after our meeting this morning.”
Seiya
studied the portrait. He thought it
looked more like a police artist’s sketch for a wanted criminal, but perhaps
that was exactly how Saori felt about Lexie Bloodstone.
“Are
you sure you don’t mind? I wouldn’t have
bothered you during your vacation time, but Shiryu has not returned from China yet, Hyoga is leaving for Siberia tonight, and I just don’t think Shun would be
very good at spying on anyone. I
wouldn’t even try to ask Ikki. But even
if the others were available and willing to do this for me, I’d still want you,
Seiya.” She finally met his fawn-eyed
gaze.
He
smiled crookedly, blushing a little.
“Thanks, Saori. I appreciate your
confidence in me.”
“It’s
more than that, Seiya. This is something
I could only ask a friend to do.”
He
raked a hand through his thick, wild hair.
“I understand. Now how about that
tea?”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Hyoga
regretted allowing Shun to take the experimental motorcycle out on his
own. Darkness was rapidly falling at
the Kido mansion and the boy had not yet returned. He had noticed that Shun had become quite
willful and restless lately, but Hyoga simply attributed it to growing
pains. The Cygnus Saint sighed in
frustration and flopped down onto the softly cushioned white sofa in the plush
den. He was completely alone in the
well-lit mansion, and Hyoga found it eerily disturbing. Silence coated each room like a thick paste. The house almost seemed to have a living
presence about it that he had never noticed before. He shivered, deciding that his imagination
was getting the better of him. He
ignored the gnawing feeling of anxiety that lay in the pit of his stomach and
reached for the television remote that rested on a white marble coffee table in
front of him. At the push of a button,
an enormous painting on the opposite side of the room slid silently up into a
thin gap in the ceiling, revealing a large television screen embedded in the
wall. Hyoga switched it on and
mindlessly cruised through the channels.
He was leaving for Siberia in less than
an hour, but his thoughts were firmly locked on Shun. Perhaps luck would be on his side and the boy
would arrive before Ikki.
But
good fortune was not shining on Hyoga.
The sound of a car in the driveway roused him from the sofa. Since it was obviously not Shun returning
with the incredibly expensive motorcycle, Hyoga hoped it was Shiryu. He went to the front of the house and peered
out one of the tall windows that flanked the doors. His hope was only half fulfilled. Hyoga watched as both Shiryu and Ikki removed
their baggage from the trunk of a small white taxicab. They had been away since the beginning of
December and had apparently by chance met at the airport upon disembarking after
their returning flights. Hyoga cursed
under his breath and opened the front doors wide to welcome home his brothers.
“Tadaima!”
Shiryu and Ikki chimed together as they entered the mansion.
“Okaeri!”
Hyoga responded.
Shiryu
and Ikki set their bags down inside the foyer.
The Dragon Saint smiled warmly at Hyoga.
“So,
Shiryu, how are Master Dohko and Shunrei?” Hyoga asked.
“They
are both quite well. Shunrei has started
a movement to save the forests surrounding the Five Peaks,
so she is keeping extremely busy these days, and Dohko remains Dohko!” Shiryu always enjoyed visiting his old
training grounds at the Rozan waterfall, but he was also extremely glad to be
back at the mansion with his brothers.
“Are you here alone?”
Hyoga
could feel Ikki’s suspicious gaze burning into him as he answered Shiryu’s
inquiry. “Saori and Tatsumi went out
earlier today. I assume they’re at
Seiya’s place.”
“Oh? Is there trouble brewing?” Shiryu asked.
“I’m
not sure. She seemed bothered by
something but she didn’t mention anything to me before leaving.” Hyoga purposely avoided mentioning the truant
Shun.
“Nice!”
Shiryu said appreciatively, suddenly shifting the conversation. He eyed Hyoga from head to toe. “That looks great on you!”
“Thanks! I hope you don’t mind...” Hyoga answered, a
little embarrassed. He had borrowed one
of Shiryu’s white silk outfits. The
Bronze Saints occasionally raided each other’s wardrobes when they grew tired
of their own clothing. Shun had turned
out to be the luckiest of them all when it came to sharing apparel. Since he was smaller than his brothers, they
could not fit into his things, but he happily wore their oversized garments as
often as possible. The others never
complained though, especially Hyoga and Ikki who both thought the baggy attire
made Shun appear even more innocent and playful than usual.
“Not
at all. You know you’re welcome to my
closet anytime! What do you think,
Ikki-san?” He looked over at Ikki who
had been typically quiet and disinterested throughout Shiryu and Hyoga’s
conversation.
“Rmmph,”
he grunted incoherently, barely acknowledging them.
Shiryu
glanced at Hyoga questioningly. The
blonde Russian responded with a look that suggested fireworks were about to
erupt. Shiryu took the hint and picked
up his luggage.
“Well,
I should really head up to my room.
These bags aren’t going to unpack themselves!” His attempt at levity fell flat. “Uh, just shout if you need anything, Hyoga.”
The
Cygnus Saint nodded. He waited until
Shiryu had reached his bedroom on the second floor before turning to Ikki. The tension between them was palpable.
“Shun
is not here at the moment,” Hyoga offered as coolly and earnestly as possible,
deciding the direct approach would be best.
Ikki
tilted his head, staring sedately at Hyoga.
“And where might he be at this hour?”
It was not as late as Ikki had insinuated, but it was quite dark outside
and he had obviously expected his younger brother to be there to greet him.
“I...don’t
know exactly,” Hyoga answered honestly.
“But he should be back any minute.”
He wasn’t afraid of Ikki’s possibly volatile reaction to the situation,
but he felt responsible for Shun’s absence.
He had been around the Phoenix Saint long enough to recognize the dark
glimmer of hurt and disappointment behind Ikki’s dusky blue eyes. Hyoga felt sorry for him.
“I
would appreciate it if you stopped undermining my relationship with Shun,” Ikki
suddenly announced.
“What? Have you lost your mind?” Hyoga was taken aback. “I’m doing everything I can to encourage your
brother to spend more time with you!
When you’re not around, what do you expect him to do? We’re all he has. Don’t you think he deserves some stability in
his life?” Hyoga knew the question was a
bit of a low blow, but he was fed up with Ikki’s paranoid accusations.
“Shun
can take care of himself,” Ikki answered with surprising calm.
“You
don’t really believe that. Haven’t you
noticed how differently Shun has been acting lately? No, I don’t suppose you would. You’re never here! And when you do finally grace us with your
presence, Shun drops everything for you!
He worships you, Ikki. Think
about it...the only person in this room who is undermining their relationship
with Shun is you!” Hyoga waited for a
response from Ikki, but he said nothing.
“If you honestly believe you can just tell me to stay out of Shun’s
life, you’d better think again! I love
him, Ikki!”
Instead
of bringing them closer, Hyoga’s words stood between them like a wall. He anticipated Ikki’s thoughts. “I’m not trying to steal him from you
either...as if that could ever happen. I
could never compete with you, Ikki. We
all know...” He hesitated, realizing he
had just stepped into a minefield.
Perhaps there would be a more appropriate time to broach the subject.
“Well,
go on...you all know what?” Ikki demanded.
“We
know about your...unusually intense feelings for Shun. It’s been quite obvious to us for a long
time.”
“Wh-what
do you mean?” Ikki stammered, wide-eyed.
“We know you love Shun...in a more
than brotherly way...” Hyoga tried
desperately to sound as uncritical as possible.
Ikki’s
face drained of color, transforming into a mask of fury. He blinked slowly, glaring at Hyoga as if he
could bore a hole straight through the Russian’s skull. Like an animal caught in a bright light,
Hyoga could not look away. He readied
himself for a blistering attack, but the Phoenix Saint suddenly turned and left
the room.
“Wait! Ikki...!” Hyoga called after him, but his
plea was ignored. A few moments later,
he heard the distant echo of a door slamming on the other side of the house,
then the low roar of a Lamborghini Countach engine revving in the
driveway. Ikki had decided to take his
anger out on the road.
“Better
the road than me,” Hyoga thought somewhat
gratefully. Shiryu reappeared in the
foyer.
“Doesn’t
sound like it went too well. Are you two
OK?”
“Shiryu,
I don’t know if things will ever be right between us...even for Shun’s sake,”
Hyoga answered sadly.

As
the sleek red machine snaked through the darkened, slush-covered back roads
surrounding the Kido mansion, Ikki glanced at his reflection in the rear view
mirror. He studied the crease of anger
etched into his brow. The Phoenix Saint
heard a brittle cracking sound and suddenly realized his grip on the steering
wheel was so tight, it had begun to splinter the hard plastic. He immediately lifted his foot off the
accelerator and loosened his fists, trying to regain his composure. He eased the vehicle onto the dirt shoulder
of the road. Gravel crunched loudly
beneath the wide racing tires as the Lamborghini slowed to a stop. Ikki listened to the soft purr of the
engine. His rage could not be
tamed. Familiar tinder sparked behind
his eyes like a switch being turned on.
He also noticed that the intense heat radiating from his body was
beginning to damage the interior of the expensive automobile. It had originally been a token of
appreciation from the Graude Foundation, but Ikki could never bring himself to
accept such an expensive gift. However,
he had no problem borrowing it from time to time.
“Well, Saori isn’t going to like this,”
he thought, momentarily forgetting about Hyoga.
“I better get this thing back to
the mansion.”
He
closed his eyes, leaned his head back against the seat, taking several deep,
calming breaths. He gently nosed the
Lamborghini back onto the paved surface of the road. Suddenly, a black shape roared up from
behind, screaming up and over the top of the car like an unearthly creature of
the night. It landed just ahead of the
Ikki’s front end, emitting a squeal as rubber tires met wet asphalt.
“What
the hell!” Ikki shouted, slamming his foot against the brake pedal. He switched the headlights on high,
illuminating the reckless intruder who waited a few feet away. A diminutive figure clad from head to toe in
black sitting astride a ferociously elegant black and chrome motorcycle met
Ikki’s angry glare. The motorcycle was
like none Ikki had ever seen before. It
seemed alive, pulsating, and it was hard to tell where machine ended and rider
began. The enigmatic biker’s shiny
helmet sported a mirrored visor that reflected the bright twin beams of light
from the Lamborghini back into Ikki’s eyes.
He squinted and cursed, furious that he could not see the trespasser’s
face. As if on cue, the rider pushed the
visor up, partially exposing his face to the light. Ikki stared in utter disbelief.
“Shun?”
The
boy threw his head back, laughing gleefully, like a maniacal pixie. Suddenly, he gunned motorcycle’s engine and
sped away into the darkness, leaving a blue-white puff of tire residue and
exhaust fumes in his wake. Stunned by
the unexpected move, Ikki was momentarily frozen. He stared in renewed anger at the rapidly
disappearing taillight of the motorcycle then he too revved his engine. The back tires protested, sending gravel,
bits of dirt and ice in a high arc behind the Lamborghini. They reached the mansion simultaneously,
pulling into the mostly empty 8-car garage located behind the house.
Ikki
pushed open the vertical hinged car door and swiftly exited the vehicle, moving
toward Shun as the boy removed the glossy black helmet. As Ikki approached the younger Saint, his
vision was bathed by the dazzling image of Shun, and for a brief moment, his
outrage had abated. He couldn’t help but
notice how gorgeous Shun looked in the skin tight, black leather jumpsuit,
metal-clad shin protectors and heavy black motorcycle boots. Ikki’s genitals stirred as he envisioned
himself grabbing the boy, peeling off the form-fitting leather and ravishing
him on the engine-warmed hood of the Lamborghini. Ikki forced the impossible thoughts from his
head and tried to focus on his indignation.
Shun swallowed nervously as he noticed the look on his brother’s
face.
“Where
did you get this machine?” Ikki demanded, trying to refrain from kicking
it.
“The
Graude Research and Development Department,” Shun explained quickly. “This is a prototype that was created for the
Steel Saints, but when they disappeared, the project was scrapped. Instead of just letting it gather dust, the
eggheads in the lab said we could use it.”
Shun watched Ikki anxiously, waiting for an explosion of temper from his
older brother. But Ikki remained
tight-lipped, which worried the Andromeda Saint. Shun knew a quiet Phoenix was far more frightening and
unpredictable.
“Nii-san?”
Shun attempted as sweetly as possible.
“And
who showed you how to handle this machine so negligently?” Ikki asked without looking up, ignoring
Shun’s attempt to placate him.
“Oh...um...no
one! I just sort of picked it up on my
own.” The explanation sounded pathetic,
even to Shun, but he could not tell his brother the truth.
Ikki finally turned and looked straight into
the boy’s enormous, sky-blue eyes. He
was tempted to bend Shun over his knee and give him a few well-placed whacks on
his behind for being so irresponsible.
“You
and I both know there is only one person who can handle a motorcycle with the
skills you displayed tonight.”
Shun
breathed in sharply and looked down at his feet. He could not feign ignorance. “But Hyoga was only...” Before he could finish, Ikki suddenly turned
and headed toward the back entrance of the house.
“Nii-san!” Shun followed as quickly as he
could, trying to catch up with his fuming brother. “Hyoga didn’t want to teach me how to ride
like that! I forced him to do it!”
As
he reached the doorway, Shun slowed his pace and sighed loudly. He knew no amount of pleading would convince
Ikki that Hyoga wasn’t completely to blame.
The truth was, Hyoga could deny Shun nothing, and there were times Shun
used it to his advantage. Ikki, however,
tended to see things quite differently.
Realizing he’d probably just get in the way, Shun wandered sadly up to
his room. Hyoga would be all right...at
least that’s what Shun prayed for as he heard Ikki’s booming voice resonating
throughout the mansion.
“Hyoga!” The enraged Saint headed for the den, but it
was Shiryu who poked his head out from behind the closed door.
“Ikki? What’s all the commotion?”
He
abruptly pushed past Shiryu and entered the room, cursing as he found it
empty.
“Where’s
that goddamned bastard Cygnus Saint?” Ikki demanded roughly.
“Eh?” Shiryu was momentarily nonplussed by Ikki’s
disrespectful attitude, but recovered quickly.
“Unlike some people, he wished to avoid bringing further tension into
this house. Hyoga is out enjoying the
invigorating night air. Now, isn’t there
something more important you should be doing right now?”
Ikki
hated it when Shiryu was right. He could
be quite smug at times. The Phoenix relaxed his
shoulders and nodded curtly in acknowledgement of the Dragon’s wisdom. He turned and headed toward the stairs,
deciding his clash with Hyoga could indeed wait. Besides, if had he found it necessary to
inflict serious bodily harm on the Russian, Shun would have no doubt been
rather upset with him. Ikki shouted up
the curved stairway that led to the second floor.
“Shun!”
“In
here, nii-san!” Shun called from his bedroom.
Ikki’s
mind raced as he climbed the stairs, unsure of exactly what to say to his
younger brother. The door to Shun’s room
stood slightly ajar. A soft glow emitted
from within, illuminating the doorframe.
Ikki stopped at the threshold, debating whether or not he should knock
before entering, then reached up and pushed the door open slowly with one hand. Shun’s room was much like the other Saints’
rooms; sparsely furnished with a bed, a dresser, and perhaps a stereo system or
television. Although Seiya chose to live
away from the mansion, his apartment was also quite spartan for a healthy
teenaged boy. They had been forbidden to
own personal possessions during their harsh early training by the Graude
Foundation, so they had all become accustomed to owning very little. Now Saori generously provided anything they
could ever want or need, she made sure of that, but they still required very
little. Though the Saints would be the
first ones to deny it, they did have one or two belongings that held a great
deal of sentimental value to them. Seiya
had his ratty old guitar, Hyoga had his mother’s crucifix, Shiryu had a few
small icons from various eastern religions, and Shun had his beloved teddy
bear, which he displayed lovingly on his simple bed. Ikki was the only exception. He had no use for material objects. There was only one thing he needed in his
life, and it was waiting for him now on the other side of the door. Ikki took a breath and entered his brother’s
room. Shun had changed out of the black
biker leathers and into a pair of faded blue jeans and a long sleeved,
plum-colored rugby shirt. He was seated
at the foot of his bed, greeting Ikki’s entrance with a dazzling smile.
“Shun,
we need to talk...,” Ikki began quietly.
He thought about Shun’s behavior on the road that evening. It had been completely reckless, and
certainly out of character which greatly disturbed Ikki...but he could never
stay mad at the boy for very long.
“OK,
nii-san! What about?” Shun waggled his bare feet playfully at his
brother. He watched his brother move to
the middle of the room. Ikki wore an
Aran-stitched olive pullover and sand-colored khakis. Shun loved it when Ikki dressed that
way. Although it gave him an air of
sophistication, it also made him seem more warm and cuddly. Shun knew his brother had no idea how
gorgeous he was. He simply never gave it
much concern, but it was true. Shun
thought his brother looked like a jungle cat creeping into his bedroom. He was
delighted to see that Ikki had removed his shoes and socks as well. Shun had always been attracted to and
fascinated by Ikki’s large, beautiful feet.
Shun struggled against a fleeting urge to fall to his hands and knees
and kiss his brother’s toes.
Ikki
surveyed the room. He was suddenly
distracted by the warm candlelight. “Is
there something wrong with the lights?”
“No,
I just felt like lighting a few candles,” Shun said nonchalantly. “What do you think?”
“It’s...um...very
nice.” Mesmerized by his brother’s
luminous beauty, Ikki’s heart thundered against his ribcage. He swallowed hard, unable to concentrate. Hyoga’s words haunted him, burrowing into his
consciousness and nesting there. Shun
watched the older boy attentively, patiently waiting for one of his infamous
lectures. Ikki moved to the window,
pulled one curtain aside and peered out into the darkness, trying to gather his
thoughts. He caught his reflection in
the glass. Why was it suddenly so
difficult to speak to his own brother?
The sound of Shun’s voice startled him.
“So,
nii-san, you wanted to talk to me about something? Hey, if it’s about the motorcycle...”
Ikki
turned away from the window. “No...I
mean, yes...I do want to speak to you about that, but there’s something
else...”
Shun
giggled at Ikki’s uncharacteristic nervousness.
“Well, so far you haven’t said anything!” Shun waited expectantly for a few moments,
then shrugged and stood up. He padded
across the room and paused in front of a turntable that rested on a low chest
of drawers. Shun leaned over and dropped
the tone arm onto a record that was already on the spindle. A few delicate notes filled the room, and in
an instant, Ikki recognized the song.
“The sky is crying, the streets are full of tears
Rain come down, wash away my fears
And all this writing on the wall
Oh, I can read between the lines
Rain come down, forgive this dirty town
Rain come down and give this dirty town
A drink of water, a drink of wine
If I been hard on you
I never chose to be
I never wanted no one else
I tried my best to be somebody you’d be close to
Hand in hand like lovers are supposed to...”
Ikki
could not believe what he was hearing.
His chest tightened at the revelation.
It was the song he listened to when he was alone, more times than he
cared to remember. Why had Shun chosen it?
Ikki feigned ignorance.
"Dire Straits?" he asked.
Shun nodded happily.
"'Hand in Hand'! I just love
this song, don't you?"
Ikki remained silent but smiled, trying to disguise his
agitation.
“As you’d sleep, I’d think my heart would break in two
I’d kiss your cheek; I’d stop myself from waking you
But in the dark you’d speak my name
You’d say ‘Baby, what’s wrong?’
Oh, here I am, baby, I’m coming back for more
I’m like a wave that’s got to roll into the shore
Yes, and if my love’s in vain, how come my love is so strong?”
It
was as if Shun had cracked open his heart and released what was buried
there. Ikki thought he had kept it so
deep, no one could ever know. Ikki
listened in stunned silence. He could
not break the spell.
“Now you and me go parallel, together and apart
And you keep your perfect distance
And it’s tearing at my heart
Did you ever feel the distance?
You never tried to cross no line
Now it’s another dirty river and another dirty scar
And I don’t know who’s kissing you and I don’t know where you are
So far from home...don’t you think of me sometime?
If I been hard on you, I never chose to be
I never wanted no one else
I did my best to be somebody you’d be close to
Hand in hand like lovers are supposed to...supposed to be
Sky is crying; see the streets are full of tears
Rain coming down to wash away my fears
And all this writing on the wall
Oh...I can read between the lines.”
Ikki
had not realized that his eyes had closed.
As the music faded, he opened them to find Shun standing directly in
front of him, inches away, peering up into his face intently.
“What’s
wrong, nii-san?” he asked innocently, his words tinged with concern. Startled and slightly uncomfortable by Shun’s
proximity, Ikki took a small step back.
“Ikki?” Shun reached out and gently gripped his older
brother’s tanned, muscular forearm. The
touch sent an electric pulse straight into Ikki’s soul. He stood motionless, staring at Shun’s small,
pale hand as it lay warmly against his skin.
He moved his gaze to meet Shun’s enormous blue eyes. Ikki could always find the sun there. Shun stepped closer to Ikki, beaming a
summer-day smile at his brother. He
decided Ikki had never looked more handsome and vulnerable. Suddenly, Shun wrapped both arms around
Ikki’s waist, burying his face against the Phoenix Saint’s solid chest. His body was like a furnace. Shun could feel waves of heat radiating through
Ikki’s clothing.
“You
know you can tell me anything, nii-san!” he whispered happily. Ikki’s need to confess his long-denied
feelings completely overwhelmed him, yet he still could not speak aloud what
his heart desired most. Instead, he
enfolded his arms around Shun, pulling him tight against his body. His mind screamed out “Stop this insanity! This is
your brother!” But the beating of his heart drowned out the
voice of reason.
“Shun...”
he murmured, lifting the boy. Shun’s
feet dangled in mid-air as he moved his arms up, entwining them around Ikki’s
neck. Shun’s veil of thick, soft hair
tickled Ikki’s nose as he breathed in the sweet, intoxicating scent of vanilla
and fresh peaches. Ikki could no longer
control or deny his feelings. How could
this be wrong? All he wanted to do was
express his love to the only person in the entire universe that mattered to
him. All he wanted to do was love his
brother.
Shun
could not count the number of times he and Ikki had held each other, comforted
each other, but this time there was something different in his brother’s
embrace. He nuzzled Ikki’s ear. The warmth of Shun’s breath sent a torrent of
unfamiliar pleasure through Ikki’s body.
His senses reeled with uncontrollable passion. He moved a hand up to cradle the back of
Shun’s head, gently burying his fingers in the silken green locks. As Shun turned his face to Ikki’s, their lips
accidentally touched. They both immediately
pulled back, momentarily shocked by the strange new sensation. Their eyes locked then their lips met once
again, meshing together perfectly. Shun
tentatively parted his honeydew lips, flicking the tip of his tongue against
his brother’s closed mouth. Ikki
responded without hesitation. The moment
was transcendent, immaculate, and neither of them dared speak, fearful the
magic would end.
With
Shun still enveloped in his arms, Ikki spun around and seated himself on the
edge of the bed. Shun brought his knees
up as Ikki sat down then hooked his legs around Ikki’s waist, settling
comfortably in his lap. Shun leaned back
slightly, his fingers laced at the back of Ikki’s neck. Shun stared into Ikki’s brooding,
midnight-blue eyes. In the dimly lit
room, they glittered with an intensity Shun had never seen in his brother before. But Shun knew the look. He had seen it in Hyoga’s eyes as well. Shun leaned forward and rested his head
against Ikki’s chest, sighing contentedly.
He listened to the strong, rhythmic beating of Ikki’s heart. He longed to seal up his bedroom door, to
lock out the rest of the world forever.
He wanted to stay in his brother’s arms until the end of time. Ikki must have sensed it.
“I
love you, Shun,” he whispered softly.
“And
I love you, nii-san!” the boy gushed in response.
This
time, Shun found the sun in Ikki’s eyes.
The Andromeda Saint smiled in complete adoration as a single crystalline
tear of joy spilled down his brother’s face.
Shun shifted his weight, pushing Ikki gently down onto the thickly
quilted duvet. Ikki began to protest,
but Shun persisted, a soft smile still playing over his lips, his cheeks
flushed. He reached up and pinned Ikki’s
wrists firmly against the bed, his knees astride his brother’s tight, rippled
stomach. Ikki nearly laughed at the
sight of Shun stretching and struggling to maintain his position on top. After allowing him to labor a moment longer,
Ikki swiftly and smoothly switched places with Shun. Ikki leaned over his brother, supporting
himself on one arm. He straddled Shun’s
thighs, exploring the boy’s body with his free hand. Shun laid underneath his much larger brother
comfortably, lazily, as if they had been this way hundreds of times
before. Fierce emotions conflicted within
Ikki like a pack of starving hyenas in a tug of war over fresh kill. He gently stroked Shun’s baby-soft cheek with
the back of his hand, brushing aside a few strands of silken green hair. Shun’s eyes were a welcoming paradise that
covered Ikki’s soul in a protective cocoon.
Ikki had been everything to him...mother, father, brother and
protector...could he now be Shun’s lover?
He suddenly realized he could never allow anyone else to take Shun’s
innocence. Ikki slid his hand down and
pushed the boy’s shirt up, exposing his slender chest and stomach. Shun had the lithe body of a dancer, muscular
and lean. A web of faint lines covered
his young torso. Although he did not
have quite as many as Ikki, the Phoenix Saint’s heart wrenched with pain at the
sight of Shun’s battle scars. Ikki
leaned down and kissed each wound tenderly, wishing they would vanish at the
touch of his lips. He paused, studying
the boy’s face. It was
ethereal...angelic...pure. Shun’s had
closed his eyes, lost in rapturous delight.
He purred sensuously at his brother’s caresses. Ikki moved his hand further downward. He continued to watch Shun’s face as he
gently cupped the noticeable bulge beneath the faded denim. Shun moaned through clenched teeth as his
body writhed in obvious pleasure. Ikki
immediately pulled his hand away, fearful and unsure of himself for the first
time in his life. Shun opened his eyes.
“Nii-san...please,
don’t stop. I want this...” he whispered
in the shadowy half-darkness of the bedroom.
“But,
Shun...”
“Ikki,
I love you. I know we’re brothers, but
you need this as much as I do...”
“I...I’m
sorry, kleiner Bruder. I just don’t
think either of us is ready for this yet.
And what about the others? If
they found out, it could change everything.”
“They
don’t have to know, nii-san!”
Ikki
shook his head somberly. “We can’t hide
from them.”
Shun
could feel Ikki’s heartache. The perfect
moment would soon be lost. Shun could
not let that happen...not yet. He
suddenly reached out and gripped the back of Ikki’s head and pulled it toward
him. Shun leaned forward, planting his
mouth firmly on Ikki’s, forcing his tongue inside, and exploring his older
brother’s sweet, generous mouth. Shun
knew pushing Ikki any further could be a dangerous thing, but he also found the
idea somehow exciting. Ikki slid an arm
under Shun’s shoulder blades and pulled him closer, punishing the boy’s lips
with ravenous kisses. Shun wrapped his
legs around Ikki’s lower back, urging him to lie flat against him. Although both were fully clothed, they could
still feel each other’s hardness. Had it
not been for their years of training, which had given them an extraordinarily
high degree of self-control, the virgin pair would have prematurely
climaxed.
Ikki
suddenly pulled roughly away from the intense, bruising kiss and sat up,
kneeling between Shun’s legs. He reached
for the front of the boy’s jeans, unfastened the metal button, and quickly
pulled down the zipper, freeing Shun’s beautiful, rose-blushed erection from
its confinement. Shun gasped as Ikki
moved his head downward, hungrily taking the boy’s perfect member between his
moist lips. He slid his hands underneath
Shun, gently kneading the boy’s exquisite buttocks. He pushed Shun’s hips upward slightly to meet
each thrust of his warm, demanding mouth.
Nothing Shun had ever experienced in his short, harsh life could have
prepared him for such an incredible sensation.
Within a matter of moments, Shun cried out, his body arching in complete
ecstasy as he exploded deep inside his brother’s greedy mouth. The Phoenix Saint eagerly swallowed every
precious drop of the honey-sweet fluid.
Shun
collapsed against the bed, trembling and panting. A few beads of sweat trickled down his
temples. He placed a hand against his
chest, feeling his own heart racing.
“What
was that?” Shun finally asked breathlessly.
“I...I
don’t know. It just seemed like the
right thing to do...” Ikki quietly confessed.
He too was somewhat astonished.
Although they were well aware of the mechanics of human sexuality, none
of the Bronze Saints had any actual sexual experience. Shun reached down and refastened his jeans,
then propped himself up on his elbows, watching his brother curiously. Ikki was oddly silent.
“Would
you like me to do that for you?” Shun asked.
Ikki stared at Shun, horrified. “No!”
“But,
nii-san...why not? I really want to!”
It
wasn’t as if Ikki had never lustfully daydreamed about Shun and he together in
such a way, but when finally faced with it, he simply could not stand the idea
of his baby brother behaving in such a crude and wanton manner. Shun was a pure shining angel. He was to be worshipped and adored, not to be
used as a mere vessel for sexual gratification.
Ikki would never allow his Shun to be soiled...by anyone. Hammered with guilt, he turned and swung his
legs over the end of the bed. Shun
crawled forward, flinging his arms around his brother, hugging him
tightly. He gently nibbled Ikki’s right
earlobe.
“Nii-san,
why won’t you let me?” Shun whispered.
“It’s obvious you need it. You’ve
just got to let me do it to you. It’s
amazing!”
Shun
snaked his hand down to Ikki’s groin, finding him still hard. Ikki grabbed the boy’s wrist and firmly moved
his hand away. Shun leaned back,
confused and frustrated by Ikki’s attitude.
He crossed his arms, pouting.
Ikki knew Shun’s feelings were hurt, but he could not give in to his
animal urges. Ikki stood up and moved to
the middle of the room. He turned and
looked at his brother who sat cross-legged on the bed, staring at the mattress
and moping inconsolably.
“Please
don’t be angry with me, meine Liebling,” Ikki softly pleaded.
Shun
looked up at Ikki, eyes wide with surprise.
“I could never be angry with you, nii-san!” He rose to his feet, bounced a step to the
end of the bed and leaped into Ikki’s powerful arms. They held each other tightly, as if the world
would stop spinning if they ever let go.
Shun
murmured into Ikki’s neck. “So...when
can we do this again?”
“What?”
Ikki asked, thoroughly stunned by Shun’s boldness. The boy had always been an open book with his
emotions, but at that moment, Ikki wasn’t quite sure if he was being serious or
simply teasing. Shun had no reservations
when it came to publicly displaying his affections. Ikki knew he had to be careful. He preferred to keep his private life just
that...private. Having such deep
feelings for one’s own brother was one thing; those he could keep under
control. But to act upon those feelings
was quite another matter. He was
treading in very dangerous territory.
The Saints might understand, and in time may even accept their special
relationship, but the rest of the world would never tolerate such aberrant
behavior. Ikki searched within
himself. Could he really be so
selfish? He was placing the only person
he loved in the entire cosmos in an extremely difficult position. He realized by standing aside and allowing
Hyoga to step in, he could save the boy from a life of inevitable pain,
ostracism and hatred. At least the dark
stigma of incest would never touch Shun.
But after that night, Ikki knew he could never live without his
brother’s love, no matter how wrong it may be in the eyes of the world.
Still
engulfed in his brother’s embrace, the boy playfully nipped Ikki’s shoulder,
giggling devilishly. The Phoenix Saint
reached down and swatted Shun’s rump. He
yelped and jumped out of Ikki’s arms, landing on the bed. Shun rolled across the mattress and grabbed
his teddy bear, lobbing it at his brother’s head. Ikki snatched the toy out of midair and
placed it in a headlock.
“Now,
say you love me or the bear gets it!” he said, baiting the boy.
“Nii-san,
no! Stop! I love you!
I love you! Gimme back my bear!”
“Come
and get it!” Ikki waved the stuffed
animal above his head as Shun sprang up and down, trying to grab it. The scuffle soon turned into playful
wrestling.
“Careful
of the turntable, nii-san!”
“Shun,
the candles are tipping over! Look out!”

Hyoga
returned from his stroll around the Kido mansion grounds. The cold evening air had helped to soothe his
jangled nerves. He had wanted to say
good-bye to Shun before leaving for Siberia,
but he was in no mood to deal with Ikki again.
A soft feeling of regret fluttered inside Hyoga like a swarm of trapped
butterflies. He would be gone for
several weeks and he would miss the boy terribly. He made his way up to his room to fetch his
overstuffed travel bags. As he passed
the slightly open door of Shun’s room, Hyoga heard frolicsome scuffling from
within. He paused, peering in through
the slim gap in the doorway. A tiny
smile played over his lips as he witnessed the brothers engaged in harmless
roughhousing. He felt a pang of guilt
spying on the pair, but he had to know if there was a chance that he could hold
Shun in his arms one last time. As the
games finally ended, they laid on the floor, panting. Shun spoke in hushed tones, but Hyoga could
clearly hear the conversation.
“Ikki,
I really am sorry about acting like such an idiot with the motorcycle tonight.”
“I
know...”
Shun
rolled onto his side, facing Ikki. He
reached up and ran his fingers through the Phoenix Saint’s thick, blue-black
mane. Hyoga’s heart leaped into his
throat as he watched the boy lean over, delivering a soul-deep kiss to Ikki,
their tongues entwining passionately.
Hyoga stepped back, his breath caught in his chest. He closed his eyes against the threat of
tears as the image of Ikki and Shun burned into his brain. He quickly and silently retrieved his waiting
bags and left the mansion, imparting his farewells to no one.
