Raenef lay, submersed in a sea of shimmering fluffy majesty
that was about one part water, two parts foam. He never had been very good at
judging how much bubble bath solution to pour into the tub.
As he laid there, his head propped in harsh comfort on the
cold edge of the tub, he tried to let the water lap away the sick feeling he
was getting about the day of training.
He hadn’t remembered the fiftieth Rule of Demon Conduct in
Action from “Pillaging Villages (abridged)” to start with, which set all the
lessons off on the wrong foot with Eclipse. Then when he was trying to learn a
new attack, the Darkness Shriek, he completely forgot to step with his right
foot instead of his left when letting the magic fly from his fingers and
succeeded in letting loose a noise similar to a kitten, not a “head-splitting
shriek that will tear the ground in front of you” as the book said.
To make matters worse, Eclipse yelled at him. He hadn’t done
that in a long time. Then again, Raenef hadn’t goofed up so badly in a long
time, either.
He had an excuse though, and it was a good one.
Raenef couldn’t concentrate on learning that day because he
had spent the previous night making up his mind to tell Eclipse somethingy
iy
important.
He was going to tell Eclipse that he loved him.
It took him a while, but he decided that this today had to be
it. He couldn’t let his feelings boil over inside of him for the rest of
eternity. He would go insane. He would explode. So, why not just say it and get
it over with.
Raenef even made a note on some spare parchment and put it by
the side of his bed, so he would wake up to:
But, he’d spent so much of the morning trying to figure out
what to say and when to say it, he’d zoned out and messed up his lessons,
making Eclipse really mad at him.
He was beginning to wo if if he would ever be able to tell
him now. He certainly couldn’t do it today. Not after all the mistakes he’d
made already. What if Eclipse didn’t share the feelings? Then he’d get yelled
at even more.
Sighing, he leaned over the porcelain tub, resting his cheek
on the smooth edge that his arms draped out over. He closed his eyes and tried
to imagine what it would be like to have Eclipse there with him, in the elegant
bathroom with its accenting gold molding and creamy marble pillars standing
watch around the ledges of the tub.
He had lit the dozens of candles surrounding it, in an effort
to help him relax and pretend that it was a romantic evening, and Eclipse was
just over outside mah mahogany carved doors, taking his clothes off to join
Raenef for a soothing bubble bath. The thought made his heartstrings wriggle
with mirth. The corners of his lips rose gently in a smile.
“Raenef,” Eclipse’s voice spoke it so tenderly it could have
been a prayer. “Raenef, open your eyes.”
Eclipse wouldn’t say that. What kind of fantasy was this?
Non-the less, Raenef opened
his eyes. What he saw there before him made him tremble in strange new ways
beneath the surface of the water.
There he was, real as snow and just as beautiful. Eclipse in
his trademark stance, one velvety pale hand curled across his slim hips as he
towered back, his hair glistening dark radiance against the stark white
bathroom.
