La Decisión de Hefesto
“His eyes are as green as mine, but his eyes don’t hate—not like mine.”
The woman breathed deep. After all these months, she hadn’t stopped thinking on him. Not for one minute. And she knew she shouldn’t. He wasn’t free, she knew that too. Besides, she loved someone else.
Or at least, that was what she believed.
Her mask was on her bed, shining by the moonlit and before she put it back on her face, she looked at her reflection on a broken mirror. Why had destiny played so hard with her? Her fingers moved along her face, slowly caressing her cheeks. But when they touched near her eyes, she thought of him again.
“Aioria—“
She walked to her bed and took the mask, for as long as she had to walk to the place she was going, she had to wear it. She covered her face and called off her armour, which took its shape and places itself on a corner.
Free from it, the Amazon walked out of her house.
He was lying on the roof of his Temple, staring at the stars, looking for a reason to forget.
He would erase the last thirteen years of his life. Change everything for a moment of peace in which his soul wouldn’t feel the guilt.
He’d wronged his brother, and his Goddess, even his fellow saints. And lately, he’d wronged himself too.
He sat, moving impatiently. He’d lost her. No he hadn’t, because in fact heeverever had her. She was too far from him to be reached. And as time went by, she was farther from her. And he’d started missing their talks and the one who was like a little brother to him.
But that was all. Of that he was sure.
He’d started missing someone else’s hair, and smell, and especially, he was missing her eyes.
But she was in love with someone else.
‘It’s because I love Seiya that you have died.’
He remembered her words when he was carrying Cassius to his grave.
Cassius, the faithful Cassius who died because of love.
Strong Cassius who died, because he had killed him.
Adding more guilt to his already tormented soul.
He finally stood. His heart achinr hir his own stupidity. For not knowing what he really desired.
He was in love with the Eagle Amazon. He had always been.
She was in love with the Pegasus Bronze Saint. Otherwise, she would have killed him already. But he’d seen her save him.
She had already chosen when he finally met her. Long ago.
And it hurt him to have to acknowledge that.
He fell free on to the ground. His body coming forward and bending almost to stand up later. He needed to leave his Temple.
He didn’t want to feel anymore.
The Greek landscape is dry mostly and it’s also full of brown mountains with no much vegetation, however, and because of its Goddess, Sanctuary had special spots full of l
Right behind Star Hill, there was one of them.
A small river ran through the hills, carving its path on the stones and rocks. Flowing free, strong and soft at the same time. Ageless.
And she simply loved it.
“Love”, she thought. It had been a long time since somebody actually told her she loved her. It had been her sister Geist, the night before she was cast away from Sanctuary. She’d changed after that. She grew bitter and dark. Grand in power and strength. Soulless.
She walked towards the water. There was nobody there, but her, the dark, the water and the moonlight. She needed anything else.
She took her mask off. Slowly, she pulled her blouse up and took it off above her head; her torso was nude and chilling for the cold air. She leaned forward taking her pants off, one leg, then the other, her feet were already bare.
She walked into the water, her body shivering at the touch of it. The heat of the Greek land keeping the water er eer enough for her. Like if it had prepared itself for the woman.
She entered the water letting herself to be covered by it, holding her breath below it enough to pull herself out and then breath again.
She enjoyed the feeling of the water running down her body. Embracing her.
She smiled.
She swam. Allowing herself the feeling the place surrounding her.
Being free.
She came out the water, throwing her head back so her hair wouldn’t be on her face. Her greenish hair falling down, like a waterfall, showing its length, longer than it actually looked. She moved her hands over her face, pulling away the trends of hair still there.
She smiled, feeling the cold air touching her naked skin.
She fell on her back and into the water once again, to float again, and swim backwards, then turning to swim to the shore.
And it was then when she saw him. He was swimming as she herself was; and just like a reflection of herself, he stood there, unable to utter a sound.
Motionless.
He just started to walk. He’d just followed his feet. theythey had led him to the river behind Star Hill. It had been a while since he went there for the last time.
Sooner than he thought, he was there, in front of the water. Sooner than he’d desired, his clothes were off and he was inside the water. He’d always loved the sensation. It made him forget about his brother, about his friends, even about Marin, but he realized now, he couldn’t forget about her.
He called her name briefly, afraid somebody might have heard him.
Afraid he could actually accept his fears.
“Shaina” he repeated. Feeling relieved when he did. Loving the sound of the forbidden name. Wishing it wasn’t forbidden.
“What am I thinking?” he said. He loved Marin. There was no woman like her, strong, intelligent—beautiful?
“Beautiful.” he muttered. He’d never seen her fand wnd when he tried to kiss her, that night so many a moon ago, she made him close his eyes first and then she kissed him; but when he opened his eyes again, all he saw was cold silver mask. And he felt awkward and never tried again. Ever.
He shook his head, and kept swimming. He had to stop thinking.
The water helped him calm his inner fire, his impetuosity. His anger and pain.
Although now, it wasn’t wog whg whatsoever.
He stood there, right in the middle of the river, a few meters away from where his clothes were. He was lost in his thoughts, until he heard some noise and splashes and turned to see what it was.
And he saw her.
She was there, staring at him. As motionless as he was.
Not even in his wildest dreams, he’d imagined how beautiful she was.
Because she was beautiful.
“Seiya was right Shaina, for being the devil, you have an angel’s face.”
She tried to calm herself when she heard his words. She didn’t want to feel anything so she breathed again when he walked away, swimming again.
She fell in the water, sitting near the shore. And then she cried.
Feeling vulnerable. Lost. Angry.
But then, she blushed. She’d just realized that she was—naked; ad so was he—and then his words—why were the Gods punishing her? Was her fault against her Goddess so big that she was receiving such pain?
She walked out the water, moving only because she had to. She got dressed without paying attention to anything around her. If she were attacked at that very moment, she’ll surely be killed. She cared for nothing. She knew nothing.
Only that she had been dishonoured. One more time. By a different man. And again, she hadn’t done anything against it.
Again, she’d made the wrong decision.
And walked in silence back to the cottage, she called home.
Thinking on painless eyes who stared ar.

Marin was there, in his Temple waiting for him. Many a day had passed since the last time they’d talked. He saw her and sighed heavily. She was the last person he’d expected to see that night.
He didn’t want to be with her.
“Good evening, Aioria.”
Her voice sounded soft and for a second, he wished that voice wasn’t hers—but another woman’s. He came closer to her and smiled faintly. “Evening, Marin.” He answered.
“Go, please” his soul screamed. He simply didn’t want to see her. Maybe another time, or the next day, it didn’t really matter. And the entrance to his Temple became an unbearable place. The air turned heavy and he couldn’t stand the view of her.
But he had to breath deep when she put her hand on her mask and removed it.
She moved closer to him and put her arms around his shoulders. He held her by her waist and kissed her. He wanted to remember the times when he would seek for her company, or when he looked at her from far and she was training Seiya.
“They’re not green.” He finally said breaking the kiss. He left his forehead on hers, knowing he didn’t have the words to explain herself.
“Kill me, Marin,” he pleaded.
She looked at him disbelieving his words.
“Kill me, please,” he repeated, holding her tight by her arms. Guilt running through his veins. “Kill me for I am not worthy of you and I cannot love you”.
She gasped, trying to recover. That wasn’t what she expected. She’d wanted to give to him the sight of her face for the first time. She’d wanted to give herself to him.
“Aioria”
“Forgive me, Marin”
He left her there standing in the middle of the place.
“They’re not green.” He repeated.
Hazel eyes for the Eagle’s Amazon.
Not green.
Hazel.
And he walked inside his temple and closed the door behind him. He couldn’t face her. He couldn’t see her eyes again.
Eyes that were not in pain.
Tranquil, like the sea in the mornings.
Beautiful.
But empty
And he needed more. He’d seen the fire burning inside green eyes. And he needed that fire to burn him.
To purify him.
He changed his clothes, wearing some sports pants only. He went to his kitchen and prepared some coffee. This time it was the best, it always helped him sleep.
He just hoped it wasn’t different that night.
She was staring at her reflection on the mirror, stretching her hand, almost touching it.
“An angel?” she was thinking. How could an ‘angel’ like her be so lethal? She knew herself too well as to believe she could actually be a good person, and she needed to understand that ‘angel’ in her.
She needed to find it, so she wouldn’t lose her sanity.
She wanted to find her soul, even if it were by looking deep into her own eyes.
“The eyes are the mirror of the soul” she remembered. Then repeated it.
But it was all useless.
She took her mask once again. Many an hour had passed since she was back and she started to walked, heading to the Twelve Temples. Flaring her cosmos as a sign of respect towards the Guardians of the Zodiac, all of them, the survivors of the battles, allowing her to pass through their places.
And she kept for herself the feeling of the Fifth Temple’s Guardian’s cosmos touching hers. Because it had made her doubt.
She doubted already everything she knew before seen him that night. Now, she was doubting her own decisions. But she wasn’t turning back. Her final decision had been made.
She got to the Pope’s Temple and flared her cosmos there. Brighter. She knew it wasn’t dawn yet, but she was determined to end it all up immediatel

Athena crossed her chamber and entered the place to meet her Korê. The Amazon was waiting for her and when she saw her, she knelt.
“Shaina? What are you doing here at tim time’ Why is your armour on your back?”
The woman stood and came toward her Goddess, leaving the box on the ground.
“I can’t stay. I’m not worthy of you, or Ophiucus.”
Her voice sounded wounded, broken. Athena was trying to understand her words. Her actions.
“Shaina, you cannot leave. Sanctuary is your place—“
“It’s not.” She said, interrupting the Goddess she’d sworn to protect.
Athena walked closer to her and removed the woman’s mask, revealing her face to her one more time.
“Shaina—your eyes—“
“Let me go, please” and the woman noticed the tears coming out. “They’ve seen my face, and I haven’t killed any of them. One sleeps in your chamber, by your side, the other one wants to be with a royal bird, not a snake—“
“Shaina stop, please,” Athena saw her, just like a mother would. Like a Goddess would. She herself was the only one to blame and she knew it. She was the one who’d imposed the masks on them. “forgive my actions from the past, my brave Ophiucus. Forgive my humanity, my dearest Shaina.”
The Gss css cleaned the woman’s tears and smiled faintly.
“You’re free to go as much as you’re free to return.”
Shaina’s eyes didn’t hide her surprise. “Athena—“
“You’ve earned your place in this Sanctuary. You’re my Korê, my warrior, my Ophiucus.” The woman nodded. “Please, don’t take it all for granted. You never know what surprises await for you.”
The woman walked after Athena and left her armour in the Chamber of the Armours. Ophiucus was to stay there until she will return.
She knelt before her Goddess again and walked out the Temple.
Seiya came into the room, and hugged Athenattintting his chin in the space between her neck and her shoulders.
“Is everything ok?”
“It is my love. It’s all ok, now. Let’s go back to sleep, we still have some hours ahead.”
He smiled at her and held her hand, walking back with her into their chamber.
