The young woman was panting as she ran. Long strands of her shiny, black hair trailed behind her and flowed along with the skirt of her robe. Her amber orbs moved, first to the right then to the left, frantically looking for a means of escape. Behind her, sounds of running feet and evil laughter approached.
The closeness of her pursuers sent the young woman in a panic. Her eyes widened, the dark pupils growing larger until it almost eclipsed the amber of her irises. She began pushing people out of her way as she skirted through the crowded streets of Tokyo.
Meanwhile, in a less busy district of the city, Sagara Sanosuke stares intently at an empty bowl made of clay.
"Come on! Six two! Six two!" He said in a rather loud voice, his eyes never leaving the bowl. Beside him, his friend, the swordsman Himura Kenshin calmly lifted his cup of tea and took a sip.
They were in a small restaurant playing a game of dice. Sano, with his propensity for gambling, had thought that bringing Kenshin along would bring him some luck. The swordsman had declared calmly that he was not a gambler but Sano insisted and in the end, he had his way...after promising to help with the chores at the Kamiya Dojo, that is. But Sano wasn't worried about that now. Besides, he could always let the twirp, Yahiko do his chores for him.
Kino, the man sitting in front of Sano shook his cupped hands one last time before opening them and dropping two dice unto the bowl. The dice rolled. One cube revealed the number "2" while the other continued to spin around. Sano held his breath. Kino held his tongue. Kenshin held his cup and took another sip. Finally, the second die finished its spin, revealing the number "5."
"Darn it!" Sano cursed while Kino chuckled and scraped his winnings. Watching his money being taken away, Sano continued to curse his bad luck. He noticed that Kenshin was still calmly sipping his cup of tea. This irked him, prompting him to say, "How can you still drink your tea like that when we're losing?"
Kenshin closed his eyes, a peaceful smile creasing his lips. He said, "This one is not losing. However, you are."
This made Sano even more annoyed as he exclaimed, "What the fuck? Whatever happened with your sword skill intuition? You're supposed to at least know whether we have the winning number or not! That's why I brought you here!"
At this, Kenshin chuckled a little. He placed down his cup and looked at his friend. "First of all, gambling has nothing to do with sword skills. Second, this one does not care for the game. Third, gambling is illegal."
Sano snorted. "Bah! This is not really gambling. Our bets don't amount to anything." He raised his arms and placed the palms of his hands against his nape, leaning his back against the wall. "Besides," he added with the same uncaring attitude, "this weird-looking person here is a good friend of mine. We go way back."
"You're the weird one, Sano," Kino said, a gloating smile in his eyes.
"Weird and broke," Kenshin added, laughing while Sano glared.
After some time, Sano suddenly glanced around as though looking for someone.
"Something wrong?" Kenshin asked.
"Yoita," he said. "He usually comes around here selling candies but I haven't seen him since the end of last week. Wonder what happened to him."
Kino looked at him sharply. "Yoita?" The alarm in his voice made Sano stare at him suspiciously. "You mean you don't know?" He persisted.
"Know what?" Sano asked. "What the hell happened?"
"Yoita was killed last week," was the hollow reply. "He was using opium. One day he took too much and he lost his life."
Silence.
...And then...
WHAM!
A bandaged fist flew and landed on the floor next to Sano's feet, creating a huge dent on the wooden boards. The clay bowl at the center of the three men jumped at the force and other patrons in the restaurant stared at them in alarm.
"Sanosuke...." Kino murmured, staring at his friend.
Sano greeted his teeth and withdrew his hand. He welcomed the pain as he allowed his thoughts to drift.
Yoita, a jovial man, so full of life. He was one of the few people that Sano could consider his friend. Whenever he came around the restaurant, he always had a ready smile and a good joke to tell. And now, Sano found out that he's dead. Cold. And dead. And all because of opium. Opium! Sano clenched his fists tighter as he felt both rage and hatred for the person who created the drug. Suddenly, he felt a heavy hand touch his shoulder and he looked up, only to find the unreadable eyes of the swordsman.
"I'll kill the bastard who did this to him," Sano hissed, closing his eyes to get his bearings back.
"It wasn't anybody's fault, Sano," Kino said. "It was an overdose of op --"
At that instant, the door to the restaurant suddenly slid open. They all looked up to find a beautiful girl standing in the doorway with a bewildered expression on her face.
Sano had his back turned so he did not see her at first. However, he did hear her enter. His reactions were slow and measured as he slowly turned.
