Chapter
One-Discovery
Garth
sat and stared at the monitor of his
computer blankly, leaning back in his chair. It had been a long day
at work, and he was just tired and stressed out from his job. He
worked for Team Rocket as a computer specialist, doing repairs and
assorted data entry jobs. He wasn't a part of the real inner
workings of the organization, and his job was pretty lame, but it
paid well. Lately, he was getting a lot of flak from his superiors
for slacking. He wasn't really trying to be a slacker, but his mind
tended to wander often.
“Mrow?” A
small cat-type Pokemon wandered next to his chair.
“Huh?
Oh, hey Meowth.” He said, scratching the Pokemon under the
chin. Meowth purred happily, and wandered back over to his comfy
pillow next to Garth's desk. Garth was never much of a Pokemon
trainer, but he had the Meowth for years as
a pet. He didn't even keep a PokeBall for
the Meowth, letting him freely roam the territory of his Team Rocket
assigned apartment. Team Rocket really didn't seem like the ideal
place of work for just an ordinary computer geek, but Garth had his
reasons for joining. He's been an outcast from society his whole
life, and he needed a place of work that would finally separate him
from his past. He's been a member for the past 6 months, joining up
a couple days after his 21st birthday. No one there knows
that much about him, and luckily for him, they don't ask too many
questions. He's able to do his job without much hassle or
harassment.
Unknown
to them, Garth is different from the rest of the guys working at Team
Rocket. See, Garth was not born physically male. He was born
female. He spent most of his life fighting with his own identity,
being tormented and teased for always being such a 'manly girl'. He
hated him self for it. He always knew that he was trapped in the
wrong body. Before actually knowing that
he could do anything about it, he'd harmed himself, and even tried to
end his own life in looking for an escape. Through the magic of the
internet, he'd discovered the wonders of hormone therapy and sexual
reassignment surgery. Saffron City was home to a great support
system to transgendered individuals. Shortly after turning 18, he
changed his name, started a weekly schedule of testosterone
injections, and had surgery to remove his misplaced breasts at 19.
Transition scared away what little friends and family he actually
had. To him, it wasn't such a loss, because it was his own identity
that was most important. But, it was hard for him to hold a job,
because many places would just take it the wrong way after finding
out that he 'used to be a girl'. Kanto's anti-discrimination
laws just weren't as great as the more up to date Johto and Hoenn
region's were. Rather than have to deal with the hassle of moving to
a whole different place of the world, Garth decided to join up with
Team Rocket. They were a particularly
shady organization, so they didn't require heavy duty background
checks to their lower ranking employees. Team Rocket was also a
better place for those who don't like to follow all of the rules, and
Garth was definitely one of those people. He even looked the part,
with his various facial piercings and assorted tattoos.
Sick
of mindlessly surfing the web, Garth got out of his chair and
stretched out. “Hey Meowth, how's about watching some Zim?”
Meowth just looked at him with one half-open eye, and went back to
sleep. “Fine. I'll just watch it myself,” he said while
picking up his work bag. His job get boring at times, so he
sometimes watches DVDs on his computer when
his managers aren't around. He rummaged around his bag, looking for
the CD binder he kept his Invader Zim DVDs in. “Hmm..How'd
this get out?”, he asked no one in particular, noticing a CD
loose in his bag. He picked it up and looked at the front. It had
the familiar Team Rocket red “R”
logo on it, and just said “CLASSIFIED INFORMATION” in big
bold letters. “What..? I've never seen THIS before..”
Wondering how in the world a disk labeled
CLASSIFIED ended up in his bag, he slipped it into the disk drive of
his computer. The words “Team Rocket Experiment M2_150”
appeared on his screen. Garth remembered getting bumped into on the
way out of work by a guy wearing a lab coat
who seemed to be in a massive hurry. They had both dropped their
bags, and some stuff fell out all over the place. He'd figured that
he must've grabbed the other guy's disk on accident. The guy
probably won't be getting the disk back, either, because
Garth's interest was perked at the sight of 'classified' scientific
information. Garth wasn't really a nosy person, but this was just
too interesting to pass up.
After
going to his kitchen to grab a Dr. Pepper out of the fridge, he began
to explore the information on the disk. He began to read a
fascinating story about a legendary Pokemon he's never heard of known
as Mew and genetic engineering. There was a photo of a stone slab
with a strange cat like Pokemon on it. “Mew is said to be
the most powerful Pokemon in all existence.
There are no known accounts of this Pokemon to still be living. I
have found fossilized remains of it in the Andes Mountain area. I
plan to replicate this Pokemon and to alter it's DNA to make a
stronger living clone. Giovanni wants to have the most powerful
Pokemon in the world for Team Rocket's gain, and has hired me to make
it happen.-Dr. Fuji” It
went on to explain the cloning process and included a picture of an
odd looking small grey Pokemon with a long purple tail curled up
inside a tank with wires suctioned to different parts of its body.
“The project is going well. We have dubbed this
Pokemon Mewtwo, and it is developing quite well. Although there were
some other failed clones, Mewtwo has done remarkably well in the
process. Giovanni is satisfied with how the experiment is going. I
do have some concerns on how powerful Mewtwo may really be, and if he
will be able to handle it..-Dr. Fuji” More
pictures were shown, depicting the growth of Mewtwo. There was a
considerable change in size from the first picture to the last one.
The report didn't go on for much longer. “Soon, we
will be opening the tank to let Mewtwo out into the world. It's
brainwaves and psychic readings are amazing. I have never seen a
Pokemon with this capacity before. But, will unleashing a Pokemon
this powerful be logical? Will it be safe?-Dr. Fuji” Garth
had reached the end of the report.
Wow. I've never
heard of anything like this before. This is intense! I've GOT to
find more out about this! Garth
thought to himself, utterly amazed at the possibility
of a Pokemon being created to be so powerful. He ran a web search on
“Mewtwo”, but couldn't find anything. The general public
probably has no idea of a Pokemon like this existing. He glanced
over at his clock, and it said 2:46 in bright red numbers. Seeing as
he had to be at work at 8:00 in the morning, he figured he should get
some sleep. Maybe he could search the Team Rocket database for more
information about Mewtwo. With mind racing with thoughts about
cloning, genetic engineering, and Mewtwo,
Garth got into bed to drift in and out of restless sleep.
***
The
next day, Garth didn't hesitate to get out of bed when his alarm
screamed at him. He got showered and changed into his work clothes.
Lucky for him, the computer people don't need to wear the standard
Team Rocket uniforms. The uniform was just a black polo shirt with a
red “R” emblazoned on the pocket, and black pants. He
did his normal morning routine of having some cereal and putting some
PokeKitty Chow and milk in Meowth's dishes. He gave Meowth a little
snuggle, and left for work. The office he worked at was only a
couple blocks away on the Team Rocket complex.
He grabbed a coffee and made his way to his little corner of the
office. Garth started up his computer and poked at the little Gir
figure sitting on top of his monitor while waiting for the startup
stuff to finish.
Hoping
to find information about Mewtwo in the Team Rocket database, he ran
a search. Nothing. Remembering the title
on the disk, he punched in M2_150 and saw a whole slew of documents
and images showing up. Feeling almost high with excitement at
finding the information he was looking for, he clicked on a link that
said “M2_150-Experiment Gone Chaotic”. “Dr.
Fuji had planned to release Mewtwo from the Developing Tank, but on
the day it had been scheduled, Mewtwo had made the experiment take a
turn for the worse. The Pokemon had used its powers to reduce the
tank into virtually nothing. The rampaging Pokemon had proceeded to
kill every single one of the scientists in the laboratory,
including it's creator, Dr. Fuji. I was one of the scientists
working on the project, but I had fallen ill three days prior to the
incident, still taking time off to rest
when the tragedy happened. I am deeply saddened by the death of my
colleagues, and am sorry that their efforts have turned out this way.
Giovanni had met up with Mewtwo after the Pokemon destroyed it's
place of birth, and had convinced it to stay with him. I have been
working on prototypes of psychic suppressive armor since before the
awakening of Mewtwo, and the tragedy has
compelled me to perfect my design. I have created a sort of suit
that will not only suppress the intense
powers of Mewtwo ,but help the Pokemon to focus it's powers if
necessary. As dangerous as the Pokemon is, Giovanni still wants to
attempt keep it in his control..”
Ethan,
one of Garth's co-workers came walking over to his desk, holding a
pathetic looking laptop computer. “Hey Garth, could you see if
you could fix this laptop?” Garth quickly minimized the window
of the document he was looking at, so his co-worker wouldn't ask him
what he was looking at. “Jessie and James were using it, and
brought it back saying that it doesn't work anymore..”
Garth
took the computer from Ethan and just laughed as he opened it up.
“Have you seen this thing inside? The keys are all jammed
down, and the screen's cracked. The only way to fix this is to throw
the damn thing away! Jessie and James, huh? Knowing them, they
probably let a Snorlax sit on it, or threw it at that damn Pikachu
that they always try to catch 'cause they thought it was a PokeBall!”
Jessie and James were well known among the members of Team Rocket,
and have because an inside joke for pretty much the whole
organization.
Ethan
took the computer back with a chuckle and agreed. “Yeah, I
should have thought of that one. I'll come back when I have a real
job for you..Hahaha..” Walking away, he tossed the computer in
a trashcan with a loud THUNK.
Now
that the coast was clear, Garth could go back to what he was doing.
“..So far, Mewtwo has been compliant with it's duties.
Giovanni has yet to lose a gym match with Mewtwo on his side.
Despite some efforts of restlessness and displays of insubordination,
Mewtwo has been a good asset to Team Rocket.-Dr. Takaki” After
reading that report, Garth clicked on on of the links to an image of
Mewtwo. What he saw was not same Pokemon that he saw the previous
night curled up into a tube. This picture showed Mewtwo standing up
next to Giovanni, and this appeared to be a MASSIVE Pokemon.
Giovanni himself was tall, but this Pokemon seemed to dwarf even him.
Mewtwo stood on large two-toed feet, attached to huge, yet muscular
legs. The Pokemon had a long purple tail, probably the length of
however tall Mewtwo was. It's arms resembled
those of a human's, but at the ends of them
were hands with three long fingers which came to unusually round tips
on each. Another humanesque feature of Mewtwo was the chest. It
resembled that of a guy who does a lot of power lifting, yet had a
unique contour. The Pokemon's head
appeared to have an almost gentile feline shape
to it. It sort of reminded Garth of the carving on the stone slab
that he saw the previous night, but had a more appealing look to it.
Despite the angry look on Mewtwo's face, there was something about
the deep purple eyes that seemed to say something more. This was not
an ordinary Pokemon. Most Pokemon seemed to not even look towards
the camera in pictures, but Mewtwo's eyes were staring straight into
the camera with an oddly penetrating glare. Garth felt a chill run
down his spine from looking at the picture, and closed the document.
It was just too weird for him. He could handle the story of Mewtwo's
creation, and even handle what Mewtwo did to all those scientists,
but he could not handle looking at those EYES. There was just
something so intense about them. Scanning through some various
photos, careful not to look Mewtwo in the eyes, Garth came across a
picture of Mewtwo in what seemed to be the armor mentioned in a
previous report. The armor appeared metallic, in smooth shades of
silver and violet. There was a helmet that covered Mewtwo's
head, with a sleek black strip as the eyepiece running along the
width of the helmet near the middle. It looked like something that
you'd see in one of those ridiculous
fighting robot animes. He then explored
assorted articles and reports explaining Mewtwo's violent temperament
and just some basic information. One of the reports ended up
mentioning Mewtwo's gender as being male, and Garth was glad to see
that finally stated. With Garth's own inner gender issues, he was
never fond of having to refer to someone as 'it'. Unlike what it
seemed in the reports, Garth saw Mewtwo as a SOMEONE, rather than the
scientist's views of him being a SOMETHING. As dangerous as this
Mewtwo seemed, Garth was awfully intrigued
by him.
Not
noticing the time fly by, it now was 12:30-lunch break. Ahh..Time
flies by when you're not working. Garth stood up, and his legs
cracked from being in the same exact position for that long. He
closed up the database, and put his computer on lock before he
started towards the cafeteria. Walking through the halls in a
semi-spaced out way with thoughts racing, he didn't even notice
colliding into the tall man in a familiar red suit.
“Garth!
Just the man that I wanted to see..” An embarrassed
Garth looked up shocked to see the face of the Team Rocket Boss,
Giovanni. He started to turn as red as The Boss' suit.
“Um..Sorry..”
Giovanni was a very intimidating person. He'd only talked to him a
couple times, but always felt 3 inches tall next to him. Garth's 4'
10” stature didn't really help much, but Giovanni was a tall,
broad man, standing a good 6' 3”.
“Really,
don't worry about it. I was just looking for you. Come. To my
office to have a chat,” Giovanni said with that creepy smile of
his.
Walking
down the corridor, Garth was REALLY starting to panic. Giovanni
didn't just talk to the lower members for no reason. This could NOT
be a good thing. Crap! He must've caught me looking at
that information! They probably keep an eye on who looks at that
stuff..But, I have the best spy blockers I could find on my computer!
It can't be that! SHIT. He could've discovered my old birth
certificate. I'm RUINED. If I get fired from here, how can I get
another job? Not only are my records messed up, working for Team
Rocket isn't the best thing to put on your resume! I'm FUCKED.
Garth's worries got worse as
they stepped into the office. The office was a pretty nice place
looks-wise. Giovanni's large oak desk had a huge black leather chair
with a red “R” across the back behind it, and a smaller,
yet similar chair in front of it. The lighting was soft and
comfortable, and there were various exotic plants scattered around
the office. It didn't look like the office of a sinister
businessman, yet more like a well paid
psychiatrist's office. But, Giovanni was not the ideal
candidate to seek mental help from.
“Go
on, have a seat,” Giovanni gestured towards the small chair.
Garth did as he was told. “Now, I suppose you wonder what
you're doing here, in this office of mine..”
Oh
crap, here it comes now.
“And
judging by your nervous presence and
perspiration, you think you're in trouble. A young man such as
yourself should learn to not have such a guilty conscious. In fact,
I've brought you here to bring you some good news!” he stated
almost warmly, in that odd way of his.
Garth's
negative thoughts began to subside, and his composure had gone back
into a normal state. “Good news? Oh! Guess I'm just not used
to that,” he laughed nervously.
“Yes.
Good news. Despite your tendencies to
slack off at times, your managers have given me good feedback on you.
I've brought you here to offer you a promotion.”
“P-promotion?”,
Garth stammered. He was shocked, because he's never been offered a
higher position in work before. He's never even been able to hold a
job long enough to get one.
“According
to what I've heard, you're the best in your department. As tedious
as your job may seem, it's important. Computers can be unreliable,
and it's good to have someone who really knows their stuff.”
The expression on Giovanni's face turned to a more serious tense
look. That look made Garth's stomach feel jumbled up for a second.
“But, the job I'm offering is in a location that you've never
been in, and is a more important area in Team Rocket. Before I can
tell you any more details, you must agree to take this position. It
is a risky area, and deals with things you couldn't even imagine in
the Team Rocket organization. Garth, are you willing to take that
risk?”
Garth's
current job was getting to be boring and tedious, so how could he
refuse? Promotions also meant better paychecks, and that was also
appealing. “Yes. I'll take it.”
Giovanni
half smiled. “That's what I was hoping for. As I said, the
job is risky. It may be with computers, but there are dangers. The
person whom you will be replaced died in a recent unfortunate
incident in the lab.”
“Lab?”
“Yes.
You'll be working in the science department keeping the computers in
tact. Not very many of the people in your current ranking even have
the knowledge of this department. So, it will be a big step up for
you. Due to your..Recent computer activity..I
feel generous to offer you this job, instead of punishing you
for breaking into some pretty top secret information.”
“I..Um..”
Garth turned red all over again. What? It was only a couple
hours ago..How did he know?? Damn blockers..
“We
keep close tabs of everything that is accessed, especially
when those files require Type IV security clearance.”
Giovanni replied in a menacing tone. “However, I am pleased
that you took the job. If not, I would have to take other, more
negative actions towards you. Knowledge is a powerful thing Garth.
In the wrong hands, it can be harmful. But, when someone takes my
side, I know that they can be trusted to do the right thing. Let me
trust you, Garth. Do the right thing.” Giovanni flipped up a
panel on his desk, and pressed a square green button on it. “Domino,
please bring in the new sector four employee's uniform.” He
looked up at Garth. “New job means a new uniform. It just
looks more professional.”
A
tall blonde woman wearing a standard female Team Rocket field agent
uniform (basic black, big red “R” across the shirt) came
walking in holding a dark blue variation of the Team Rocket uniform
with a smaller “R” on the chest. She scoffed at Garth as
she handed it to him. “Good thing he's just one of the
computer geeks around here. Way too small to be of any other use..”
Bitch.
I should tell her that all she looks like she could only be of use
as the Rocket's whore..
“Domino,
that's unnecessary. You can go now.”
Giovanni waved her off. “New assistant.
She seems to think she runs the place. I'll just have to show her
who's boss, if you catch my drift..”
Judging
by the look on Giovanni's face, Garth wasn't sure if he even WANTED
to catch his 'drift', and just nodded weakly.
“Well,
I'm afraid we have to end things at this, Garth. I'm a busy man, and
I'm looking forward to the weekend just
about as much as you are. Oh, go on and take the rest of the day
off. You'll need the long weekend to prepare for what you're going
to have to deal with. Feel free to explore the rest of the Team
Rocket database as you already took your own liberties, to do.”
Garth got out of his chair and started for the door. Giovanni's
voice stopped him in his tracks. “One more thing that I hadn't
mentioned to you. Sector Four is not just the location of your new
position, it is the location of my 'good friend', Mewtwo”.
