Echizen Ryoma walked into the school. Looking around him, he could see members from each grade. His own 10th, along with 11th, and 12th. He looked around for one of his old Seigaku team mates, hoping that just maybe they had ended up in the same high school. He hadn’t seen most of them in a few years. Momo-senpai and Kaidoh-senpai he had seen two years ago when they were still in the middle school with him. He was beginning to feel a little bit disappointed when he was suddenly tackled from the side and thrown to the ground.
“Ochibi!!!” He heard a familiar sounding voice say.
“K..Kikumaru- senpai?” He said, from under the still small and thin body.
“I’m so happy to see you Echizen-chan!” The redhead squealed getting to his feet.
As Ryoma also got to his feet, he looked at the man in front of him. Kikumaru Eiji was still short. Ryoma had grown quite a bit since he had seen him last, and was about three inches taller than Eiji now. His hair was shorter, but still basically the same. The band aid was gone from under his eye. He saw that Eiji had lost none of the energy that he had always seemed in abundance of. In fact, as Ryoma watched him, he was bouncing on the spot, seemingly charged with energy.
“We wondered if you were coming in with this class or not.” Eiji said, ruffling Ryoma’s green hair, which was shaggier and a little longer now.
“We?” Ryoma asked curiously, looking around. “Who else is here?”
“Momo and Kaidoh.” Eiji said.
Ryoma smiled. He would be happy when he got to see those two as well. Momoshiro Takeshi and Kaidoh Kaoru were a year above him. He wondered if they were still the same hot blooded rivals they had always been. His heart felt heavy at the thought of not being about to see his previous captain, and close friend Tezuka Kunimitsu.
“And what of the rest of them?” Ryoma asked Eiji.
“Well, Tezuka, Inui and Oishi went to one school, and Fuji to another, where he would be closer to his brother. The summer after 9th grade, Fuji and Taka became an item, so Taka went with him.” Eiji finished with a giggle.
Ryoma could understand that the tensai of the Seigaku team would want to be closer to his brother, Fuji Syusuke had always been that way. Nor was he surprised with the Fuji and Taka relationship. The two of them had grown very close before the end of that year. Ryoma was glad that none of his Senpai were alone.
“Echizen-chan?” Eiji said. “Wooo.” The redhead snapped his fingers in front of Ryoma’s face, bringing him back to the present. Ryoma smiled at him.
“You want help finding your room?” Eiji asked. Ryoma looked at his paper. Room 127. He was pretty sure he could find that on his own, but he wanted to catch up with Eiji a bit more.
“Sure Senpai, if you have time.”
“Let’s go!”
As they walked, Eiji filled him in on the rules and such of the school. Ryoma was sure that this school, much like middle school, was going to be pretty boring.
“So I will meet you here at lunchtime and you can eat lunch with Momo, Kaidoh, and me alright?” Eiji said as they stopped in front of his room. Ryoma nodded and walked in. He heard a very familiar voice that made him roll his eyes. Horio Satoshi was in the midst of a group of people, his grating voice heard over everything else. He looked around the class and saw two other faces he recognized. Katou Kachirou and Mizuno Katsuo were sitting in the back of the classroom together. In 8th grade, they had finally broken away from Horio, and had been more popular since then. Ryoma liked these two and went to sit with them.
“Ryoma-kun!” They said at the same time. He nodded to them and sat down. He put his head in his hands, and listened to Horio bragging about one thing or another. Then the first bell rang and the students took their seats. As the sensei walked into the room, everyone was quiet. The lesson began.
*******
The bell for lunch rang and Ryoma was awakened from a daydream he was having about someone. He wasn’t really even sure who. He got up and left the classroom. The first thing he saw was a bright blue pair of eyes surrounded by red hair.
“Ochibi!” Eiji shouted, a huge smile on his face. Ryoma smiled, unable to help himself and walked to the redhead waving him over.
“Echizen!” He heard someone scream from his side. He looked over and saw Momo barreling toward him at top speed. He thought he could easily dodge the glomp attack by stepping forward, but Momo caught Ryoma’s back and accidentally pushed him forward. He fell forward into small but strong arms that kept him from falling down. He looked up and saw Eiji smiling down at him. Ryoma got himself steadied again and stood up.
“Thanks Senpai.” He mumbled. He turned just in time to see the flash of violet eyes as Momo overcame him and basically picked him up. Momo had gotten bigger in the time they hadn’t seen each other. He had to be close to six feet tall. Ryoma came up to roughly his shoulder, which really hadn’t changed.
“Hello Momo-senpai.” Ryoma said, again getting his hair ruffled by an upperclassman. He stuck his bottom lip out and blew some stray green strands from his eyes. Momo wrapped an arm around the younger boy fondly.
“Great to see you Echizen.” He said. “Let’s go get some lunch, I am starving.”
“Nice to see not everything has changed.” Ryoma said, reaching up and touching the bristle of hair growing on Momo’s chin. Eiji giggled at this. He reached a hand out and stroked Ryoma’s cheek softly.
“Still so smooth.” He said winking.
Ryoma blushed gently, feeling the warmth spread across his face from the spot that Eiji had touched him. It was Momo’s turn to laugh now.
“Oi Echizen, don’t knock it if you can’t even grow it yet.” He said warmly, absentmindedly stroking the hair on his face. “Oh, and I see you blushing, what’s the matter? You feeling hot since Kikumaru-senpai touched you?” He laughed loudly again. “I’m just messing with ya Echizen.” He said.
They got their lunches and went to eat in Eiji’s classroom as it was primarily filled with older and quieter students. They began to eat, Eiji sitting next to Ryoma, and Momo on the other side of Eiji, when Ryoma heard yet another familiar sound from the doorway.
“Fshhhuuu”
“Kaidoh-senpai.” Ryoma said, looking toward the sound. Sure enough, there was Kaidoh. He walked toward them, a bitter look on his face. ‘Although’ Ryoma thought, ‘He rarely has anything but a bitter look on his face.’ He also hadn’t changed much, he was a little taller, as tall as Momo. However the biggest change had been in his muscles. It seemed he had put on twenty pounds of pure muscle in the time since Ryoma had seen him.
The man walked over and set his lunch down with a bang.
“Momo you jerk.” He said heatedly, “I told you specifically to wait for me. I walked all over looking for you.” He looked at Momo with murder in his eyes.
Momo looked lazily up at him and smiled. “I forgot.”
Kaidoh took a step closer. “How did you forget, I told you right after the bell!” He bellowed.
“Hey get out of my face!” Momo yelled standing up, his violet eyes becoming dark. “You wanna go?”
Other students in the room looked at them curiously, then away again, saying things like, “Oh, its just them again,” or “Damn kouhai.”
Eiji jumped up and got between them. “Stop it guys.” He said. “Sit down and eat.”
Momo shook his shoulders and cleared his throat. “You better watch it Viper.” He said ominously, and sat back down.
“Fshhhuuu.” Kaidoh replied and sat down on the other side of Ryoma.
“I can see that some things will never change.” Ryoma whispered to Eiji, who giggled and nodded. They continued their lunch, and when the bell rang, the three underclassmen stood up and readied themselves to leave. Eiji grabbed Ryoma’s arm as he was walking away and pulled him back.
“Meet me after classes, I wanna get to know you again.” Eiji said with a smile. “Don’t tell anyone, cause I want it to be just us alright? Can you make it?”
Ryoma nodded with a small smile. As he walked back into his room, he wondered why Eiji wanted it to be just them, but he supposed he could understand it. He kinda wanted to have some time alone with each of his senpai to catch up. Walking to his seat, he was again annoyed to hear Horio ranting and raving about how great he was. Horio could almost rival Atobe Keigo in the bragging department. Then the sensei walked into the room and everyone grew quiet. Ryoma put his head in his hands and let his mind wander. This was English, which he was already fluent in. He closed his eyes and waited for the end of the day bell.
******
After class, Ryoma packed up his bag and flung it over his shoulder with a slight grunt. It didn’t seem right for the damned thing to be this heavy after the first day. Tennis club tryouts weren’t for another week, so he didn’t even have his rackets in it. He walked into the crowded hallway and looked for the familiar flipped red hairstyle. He didn’t see Eiji anywhere, so he started to walk toward the stairs to get outside and away from the crowd.
“Echizen-chan.” He heard in his right ear. He jumped what felt like three feet in the air and turned. He saw Eiji standing there with a satisfied grin on his face. “That was too easy Ochibi, you need to pay more attention. Now let’s go before someone else sees us and wants to come along.”
Eiji led Ryoma through the crowd with ease, and Ryoma allowed himself to be led. When they were finally outside, Eiji looked around and they cut out across a field, walking quickly until they were behind a patch of trees.
“Why are we going so far out of the way just so nobody will see us Senpai?” Ryoma asked with a very curious expression.
“Who said we are going out of the way.” Eiji said coyly, which made Ryoma want to ask a whole new line of questions. However, Eiji held up a hand to silence him.
“You can ask me anything you want once we get there.” He grabbed Ryoma’s wrist and led him into the woods that surrounded the school grounds. Ryoma went along, keeping quiet as asked, although rather grudgingly. He didn’t like being hushed by anyone, senpai or not. Eiji led the way as if he had been this way a hundred times, pushing through trees, as there was no clear path. They walked for what seemed like a half hour. Eiji held the wrist that Ryoma wore his watch on, so he had no idea how long it had actually been. As they walked, Ryoma began to hear water flowing. He could keep quiet no longer.
"Kikumaru-senpai where are we going ?” He said, tugging his wrist back from the redhead.
“Echizen-chan....” Eiji answered with a pout. “We are almost there, just come on .” He grabbed the wrist again and tugging on the last word. They walked for about ten more minutes then they came to a clearing and Ryoma was shocked. It was amazing. There was a stream that was bubbling quickly, and a grassy area with wild strawberries growing everywhere. There was also a area of grass that was oddly smashed. Ryoma guessed that it was where Eiji would sit when he came. Eiji let go of his wrist and turned to look at him.
“Here we are!” He said excitedly. “As far as I know, I am the only one who ever comes here.” He smiled at Ryoma now, obviously waiting for approval.
“It’s great Kikumaru-senpai.” He said honestly. “Thanks for bringing me here. One thing bugs me though, did we have to come all the way here to talk?”
He watched as Eiji’s face dropped slightly. “I just wanted to show it to someone.” He said quietly. Ryoma smiled, not liking to think he had made Eiji sad.
“Well then, lets sit and talk.” He said and went to the grassy area and sat, the older man following close behind. When they were both comfortable, Eiji smiled. He looked around for a second, then plucked a few strawberries from the patches, handing one to Ryoma, and eating one himself. As he chewed, he spoke excitedly.
“There aren’t many edible ones on each patch, but there are a lot of patches. This is getting to the end of the season now, so there are more ripe ones.” Saying that he went in search of some more, singing some song at the top of his lungs. Ryoma lay on the grass and watched the clouds move. He let his mind wander for a second before realizing that he didn’t hear Eiji singing anymore. He sat up and looked around, not seeing him anywhere. He stood up and before he could take a step, he was thrown to the ground again. Eiji was on top of him, laughing like a wild man. The sound of his senpai’s laughter caused Ryoma to laugh as well, even through the several broken ribs he was sure he had after landing on the ground so hard. Ryoma looked up and Eiji had an evil looking smirk on his face. Ryoma, being taller and heavier, rolled over and was soon on top of the older man, pinning his arms to the ground.
“I’m bigger than you now Senpai.” He said, laughing still.
“Maybe this is where I wanted to be.” Eiji said, smiling, but no longer laughing. His blue eyes sparkling with the light of the sun.
Ryoma looked at him confused, and then got to his feet. He helped Eiji up as well and they stood there for a minute looking at each other.
“There is something else I want to show you.” The redhead exclaimed, again grabbing Ryoma’s wrist and leading him up the bank of the stream. A little way up, there was a boulder, which Eiji climbed and sat on.
“Come on up Ochibi!” He called down.
Ryoma rolled his eyes and climbed up on top of the rock. He saw that Eiji had removed his shoes and socks and was rolling up his pant legs. Ryoma left his on. He scooted to the edge, and watched as Eiji dropped his feet into the stream. They sat their quietly for a few minutes, until Ryoma broke the silence.
“So are you in the tennis club?” He asked his senpai.
“Of course.” He answered. “Tryouts are next week, are you gonna go out for it?”
Ryoma smiled. “Do I need to answer that question?”
“Guess not.”
“What about Momo-senpai and Kaidoh-senpai?” Ryoma asked.
“They are on it as well.” Eiji replied.
Ryoma fell silent again. He wasn’t used to this quiet and more thoughtful Eiji.
“Echizen?” Eiji said quietly.
“Yes Kikumaru-senpai?”
“Can I tell you something?” The redhead said, not looking at him.
“Sure.”
“I was waiting for you to come to the school.” He said slowly. “If you wouldn’t have come to the school, I wouldn’t have ever brought anyone here.”
At the last words, Ryoma looked over at Eiji. He could see the blush rising into his face. He didn’t know what to say to that, however. He was moved in a way he had never been. His senpai was showing him something special and he felt overwhelmed with an emotion he had never had. Finally Eiji looked over at him. Ryoma saw that the blue eyes were full of something new as well. At least something Ryoma hadn’t seen there before. Ryoma looked away, feeling heat in his own cheeks now. They were silent for some time again. Finally, Eiji spoke up.
“The sun is setting, look.” He said, grabbing Ryoma’s sleeve. The two of them watched as the sky changed colors before their eyes. Eiji sighed happily, and the sound sent a shiver up Ryoma’s spine. He leaned close to the older man, and smelled strawberry on him. Eiji turned his head, and they looked at each other, both captivated. Ryoma leaned forward more, and brought his lips to Eiji’s. Eiji leaned in also, deepening the kiss a little. Ryoma opened his mouth slightly, tasting the sweetness of his first real kiss. Eiji pulled away and they looked at each other again for a moment and then they both looked away. Both of them blushing hotly.
******
After the sun had set, Eiji put his shoes and socks back on, and they began the walk back home. Neither of them talked much, neither knew what to say. Ryoma didn’t know what to think, or how to feel. He had never felt that way before. He was sure it had to be a heat of the moment thing. His senpai would never have let him kiss him that way. When they walked from the woods, about forty five minutes later, Eiji grabbed Ryoma’s wrist and stopped him. Ryoma turned and looked at him, but Eiji continued to hold his wrist.
“What happened, back there.” The older man said. “I liked it.” He then slid his hand down and grabbed Ryoma’s hand for a second, and squeezed it, “I wouldn’t mind it happening again.” He said before letting go and turning around to walk away.
Ryoma watched him go, his mind racing with questions that he knew he would probably never ask. He waited until he could barely see Eiji before he turned and walked his own way home.
