Dark Before The Dawn
Prologue
The sky streaked pink, purple, and a light orange as the sun sank down past the horizon. Already the moon was making its ascent into the sky, casting the palest light down on the earth. It shone the brightest within a small glade in the middle of woods. It was there that they gathered. For the first time in ten years, they were together again. At first no one spoke, each of the nine women staring at each other, wondering what was it that caused them to stray away from each other. It seemed like it was just yesterday that they were gathering at the temple, gossiping or strategizing over a enemy. How time flew.
It was the petite blonde with her hair up in pig tails attached to small buns that broke the silence first as she flung herself at the raven haired woman, “I can’t believe this is really happening. I missed you guys so much.”
That was all that was needed and the whole group fell into each other, ending up in one large group hug. There was laughing and crying and talking over each other, trying to learn what everyone had been up to. After several minutes of this, they all pulled away and just laughed. It was some time before everyone calmed down enough to sit down on a blanket that was spread. By this time, the moon hung high in the sky, bathing them in its light. The blonde who broke the silence, Usagi, tilted her head up and the others saw a shimmer of something around her through the moonlight. They knew at that moment they were looking at a regal queen, and the time was nearing.
Usagi looked at them, noting their odd looks, and knew instinctively what they were seeing. Before anyone could say anything, she held up her hand and said, “I know what you are thinking. And yes, its true. However I don’t want to think about that right now. We will have plenty of time to prepare. Right now is a time for us to reconnect.”
The raven haired girl she first hugged, Hino Rei, kept what she was thinking to herself and said instead, “Your right. Ten years apart means we have a lot of reconnecting to do.”
Aino Minako gave her a snide look from her spot on Usagi’s left, “Not all of us stayed away for ten years. Some of us stayed in touch with the others.”
Rei glared at her and retorted, “Well some of us didn’t have the luxury of being able to take off whenever we wanted to come and visit, Ms. World’s Top Model.”
Minako laughed, “Right, Ms. High Power Executive, and how hard would it be for you to walk down the road to say to Usagi? Out of us all, you’ve lived closer to her for ten years and never once stopped to say hi or anything.”
Rei opened her mouth to snap back but Usagi held up her hand, “GIRLS! Look, the past ten years were rough on us all. We went our separate ways, yes, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t stop caring for each other. I don’t blame any of you who stayed away. I may be your princess but I do not dictate your lives. And Mina-chan you know that. Besides, Rei has been there. She was the one who held me five years ago when Mamoru broke my heart.”
Minako looked down ashamed and Rei looked away, avoiding the stares of the other girls. Timidly, the blue haired woman spoke up, “I don’t think any of us really blame each other for not being there for you, but rather not being there for each other.”
Kina Makoto smiled warmly at her shy friend, Mizuno Ami, “But you were always there for me, Ami-chan.”
Ami smiled, “Yes you, but I won’t deny that I drifted apart from Usagi-chan, Mina-chan, and Rei-chan.”
One of the older women with aqua colored hair spoke, “Its hard to drift apart when you were never close.”
“Michiru-kun is right, we Outers really made no effort to get as close as you all are. We kept our distance and that was wrong.” said the short sandy hair blonde, Tenou Haruka, placing her hand on Kaiou Michiru’s shoulder. Michiru smiled and moved closer to her lover.
The youngest one there shook her head, causing her violet back hair to swing in her face, “Bully for you. I think I’m the only one who stayed in touch with everyone. Including you Haruka-papa and Michiru-mama. I wonder why that is?”
Michiru smirked, “Well Hotaru-chan, could be that your just now finishing college and haven’t had the chance to travel like the rest of us?”
The oldest of their group laughed, ruby red eyes shining, “She’s right. You’re the only one who remained in Tokyo because she had to.”
Hotaru frowned, “Well I don’t see anyone blaming you for leaving, Setsuna-mama. After all, you out of us all, had a good excuse for not staying in touch.”
Usagi sighed and leaned back, listening to them all bicker over who was the worst in abandoning her. The truth was, she didn’t blame any of them. To her, they didn’t abandon her, rather they spread their wings and flew on their own. Something they could finally do with the defeat of Chaos when they were sixteen. After all, Chaos and Galaxia were their greatest challenge and they defeated them. She no longer needed their protection. After all, why were they bickering when she was the one who sent them on their ways. Closing her eyes, Usagi thought fondly of what they had all accomplished in ten years.
Ami-chan, her first Senshi, went on to become the youngest person to get their Ph.D. Rei-chan, her favorite bickering partner, went on to build a business that to this day remained on the top, along with helping Chad out at the temple after her grandfather passed on. Oh Grandpa Hino, Usagi actually missed him. Makoto was shuffling her time between five five-star restaurants, and three florist shops, plus a married life with Ken. Minako flitted from country to country, set to set as the worlds most wanted model and most popular teen idol, her biggest dream. Haruka eventually won the NASCAR cup in America, a great accomplishment for a foreign woman. Michiru had stayed close to Haruka, but still managed to perform with the New York Symphony and have several of her paintings displayed at the Louvre in Paris. Little Hotaru, who wasn’t so little anymore, graduated top of her class and was heading to law school in the fall. And Setsuna, well she remained ever loyal at the Time Gates.
‘And I am twenty six, still living with my parents, with no boyfriend and a crappy dead in job. All my friends succeeded and I failed.’ she thought miserably, watching everyone as they moved from bickering to describing the things they had done and seen. Usagi finished two years of college before having to quit and help her mother out when her father died unexpectedly from a heart attack when she was twenty. Then a year later, Mamoru broke up with her, stating that he couldn’t take not being the most important thing in her life. Funny that it took her almost ten years to realize what a jerk he really was. And now, here they were, together again.
Sighing, she turned her attention back to the group, determined to mention the dreams and feelings she had been having. The growing dread that haunted the back of mind. The instinctive knowledge that while Crystal Tokyo was approaching, something else was too. Something that would challenge them in ways they had never been challenged before. Something that could very well prevent Crystal Tokyo from happening. A something that was ten times stronger than any enemy they had faced in the past. After all, everyone would find out soon now that they were back in Tokyo. Let them have their moment of peace. Usagi smiled and thought, ‘We deserve it. Champions of Love and Justice, Protectors of the Earth and the Planets. Princesses of the Solar System. Yes, we all deserve what last bit of peace we can get. For the time is closer than ever has been and I don’t know if we’ll all make it in the end. Five months and counting. Who will be there in the end and who will be gone?’
Author’s Note: O.O OMG! She wrote…she started a new fic? Who would have thought it? Yeah I know a new SM fic, haven’t done one of these in a while. I plan for this to be long and in depth. Lots of character development and twists and turns. So buckle up and enjoy the ride.
