Double or Quits.
FAKE, and all related characters, are not owned by me, nor am I affiliated with their creator in any way. This is a work of fiction written purely for entertainment purposes. The original characters, Dane and Ben Marten, are my own.
This fanfic contains foul language, violence, angst, and a relationship between two men.
Ryo? Ryo, are you here yet?! Dee Latener threw the door open in a panic. Alas, his partner was no where to be found. And in their profession, it was always a very bad sign when one goes missing without a trace.
What in the hell are you yelling about, scumbag? Bikky walked up behind Dee with a loud grunt. Spinning around, Dee curled his fingers into Bikkys shirt and yanked him into the air, screaming into his face, Where the fuck is Ryo, you brat?!
How the hell would I know? Bikky kicked Dee, breaking away from him. After a slight hesitation, he uttered quietly, Hes been out for awhile I havent seen him at all since sometime yesterday Dee, is Ryo in danger?!
I- I dont know! Damn it, hes not here, either Oh, god, I have to find him! Dee knocked Bikky aside, bolting out of the room.
"Damn it, Dee! Wait---" Bikky scrambled to his feet, racing after Dee. After a moment, he stopped, huffing as he watched Dee running farther away from him. He spun on his heel, turning around to go and find Cal.
As Dee ran through the streets, he slipped his fingers into his coat pocket, curling them around the letter that had been folded up inside. In type, the note simply said,
What is the most important thing in your life?
Well, wasn't that a stupid question. Nothing in the world was more precious to Dee than his partner, Randy Ryo McLane. And it was now quite obvious that someone with less than polite intentions already knew that very answer. Ryo was missing, and the only clue was the letter in Dees pocket. Not much to go with.
God, damn it! Who the hell would do this?" Just when things had actually been pretty calm and easy at the precinct. This was so unexpected, so sudden "If hes hurt, Ill fucking kill!
There you are, Dee!
Go the fuck away, J.J. Im not in the mood for your shit right now. Dee continued to walk, but the other man jumped in front of him. J.J.'s breathing was a bit heavy, and his forehead was dripping with sweat.
Dee, are you okay? Ever since I heard about Ryos disappearance, Ive been worried about you... J.J. stared up at Dee, genuine concern - rare, but possible - in his big eyes.
Concerned? Youre probably ecstatic! I dont want your fake sympathy! Dee hollered, throwing J.J. roughly to the ground. J.J. tumbled a bit, but wasted no time in pushing himself up onto his knees.
Even though I may refuse to give up on you, Dee I am not stupid. I know how much you really love Ryo. I may hate it, but I know its the truth. Im really sorry about this. Please, Dee, I want to help you find Ryo! You cant do this all on your own, who knows what kind of danger--
Forget it. Youll only be putting yourself at risk as well. I dont want to have to worry about both of you And with that, Dee took off at a quick pace, leaving behind a teary eyed J.J. on the ground.
Any news yet, Berkeley?! Dee burst into the room, an expression of utter desperation adorning his features.
Im afraid not. But, I will find him.
Like hell you will! Dee snarled, slamming his fists against Berkeleys desk. Before things got the chance to escalate, the phone rang. Without taking his eyes off of Dee, Berkeley leaned back, reaching out to answer it. With an uncharacteristically distressed look, he held the receiver out to Dee in silence, who snatched it from his hand.
Hello? Yeah, Latener here Who the fuck is this?! So help me, if you have hurt him! What? What the hell is that supposed to mean?! Hello? Hello?! With a howl of anger, Dee hurled the phone at Berkeley, who just barely ducked out of its way.
No, Dee, wait! You cant go alone, you have to tell me what he said!! The detective sighed, knowing his words were useless. Dee was already gone, and everyone knew that this was a personal case for Dee and Dee alone - someone had planned all of this to get at Dee. But what could someone possibly want so badly from Dee that they would kidnap Ryo in order to get it?
God, what the hell? Ka-ching, what the fuck is that? Damn it. At this rate, Ill never be able to find Ryo Dee wandered the streets for hours, trying to put non-existent pieces together, coming up with unexplainable scenarios. Motives ran through his head, but nothing ever made sense. The sound continued to circle through his mind, but he still could not understand what the masked voice could have meant by it. Lifting his head, Dee discerned a very familiar sound. The background noises of any casino you could possibly enter. He followed the noises, which grew gradually louder and louder, as if they were leading him along.
Dee turned a corner, treading slowly down the dank back alley of a block of run down buildings. Hearing a crunch under his foot, he glanced downward to notice casino chips. A trail of casino chips, to be exact. They made a path into the smashed-in backdoor of a long abandoned apartment complex. Reaching down, Dee scooped up a handful of the chips, and then threw them against the brick wall of the building, whispering to himself, What the hell is this?" It was a painfully obvious set-up, but Dee was ready to fall for anything that would lead him to Ryo.
With that, Dee began to follow the trail into the building. Cobwebs ruled, and broken pieces of who-knows-what were scattered everywhere. The stairways looked as if they would give in at any time - which was, unfortunately, where the chips lead. Taking slow, cautious steps, Dee climbed eight floors of crumbling steps until he reached the top floor. All of the doors were either hanging open, or broken open, except for one. The door at the very end of the hallway.
As he stepped up to the door, his hand found its way to his hip to make sure that his gun was, in fact, still on his person. Taking in a deep breath, Dee raised his leg up and slammed his foot against the door. It gave in, cracking through the middle and swinging backwards on only two of the three hinges. But, Dee could never have prepared himself to see what was inside of the room.
Against the farthest back wall inside of the room, a massive X made out of wood had been constructed, that reached from the ceiling to the floor. Ryos body was - in the proverbial terms - spread eagle and chained to the X. He was only clad in a pair of usual khaki pants - that were torn up and soaked with blood. Ryos bare upper torso had been marred and mutilated - he had been cut, beaten, battered, and tortured. Ryos head was hanging limp with his filthy hair, soaked with sweat and blood, plastered to his face. From Dees position, it was unable to decipher whether Ryo was even still alive.
Dees entire body was trembling, almost convulsively so. With clenched fists, he charged into the room, running to Ryos rescue. He was abruptly stopped when a gunshot was fired at him. The bullet whizzed right in front of his chest, piercing into the wall. Dee stumbled backwards, but managed to regain his footing. Without even a thought, Dee whipped out his gun and aimed it at his attacker, only to find that his attackers gun was now aimed at Ryo.
Now, now. Dont be so hasty, Dee. Lower your gun or your precious partner gets it.
Its you! Dane, I had you locked away years ago! Dee dropped his gun to the ground and took a step away from it, staring bewilderedly at Ryos kidnapper.
Im flattered that you remember who I am, oh dear Dee Latener. You had me put in prison for life, for crimes I did not commit! But, with the help of a few old pals, I was able to escape. And now I want the justice that I deserved! The man was short in height, but wide in frame. He had a chiseled face, with many wrinkles and features that were caving in. He was dressed in a faded business suit.
Crimes you didnt commit? You slaughtered a casino full of people! Dee yelled.
Why would I kill my own customers, Mr. Latener? There is no logic in that. The man - known only as Dane - commented calmly.
What did you do to Ryo? Is he even still alive?! Dees breathing was ragged and heavy, his arms and legs quivering as he stared at the mutilated body of the person closest to his heart. The pale flesh was stained in dried blood, and there were wounds that Dee knew would never heal.
Oh, hes alive, Latener. Barely, but still alive. However, whether or not he stays among the living is all up to you. A sinister smirk played across Danes lips; a deep, hearty chuckle escaping his thick throat.
You sick bastard! How could you do this to him?! He didnt do anything to deserve it!
And neither did I! You dont seem to understand, Dee Latener, that this is my justice. Justice dealt me the wrong hand, and I intend for you to get that same bad card! Dane grinned widely, a sadistic glint in his eyes. Now is the time for your redemption, Mr. Latener.
What the hell are you talking about? Dee snarled at the stout man, unable to take his gaze off of Ryos body.
Youre going to serve me the justice you stole from me. That is, if you ever want to hold this man in your arms again, faggot. With his gun still aimed at Ryos head, Dane took sluggish steps backwards, inching his way slowly towards the closed closet door. Using his free hand, he opened the door and let it swing open, for Dee to see what was inside.
It was a man, rugged in features and lanky in build, bound and gagged on the floor. His eyes were a cry for help in themselves. From the looks of it, he appeared to be completely unharmed. Dane grabbed the man by his throat with his thick fingers, and dragged him out of the closet. He shoved the man into a chair, loosening one rope to strap him firmly to it.
This is the man who framed me, Mr. Latener. His name is Ben Marten. This is the man who killed all of those people in my casino that day. This is your true culprit. This is the man that unjustly escaped punishment. Punishment that I had to suffer for him. But, now... It is his turn to suffer. He will receive the ultimate punishment. And by your own hands, Dee Latener. If you want Mr. McLane to be released with his heart still beating, you have to do two things for me. Number one, you have to kill this man. You are going to shoot him until he is dead. Number two, you are going to allow my escape. You will not inform anyone of who I am, what I did, what my true intentions were. So, what will it be, Mr. Latener? Are you willing to give up everything you have - your life, your career, your future - for this man? It is double or quits, Latener.
I'd give up everything I have for Ryo. I won't let you take him away from me. I I'll do what ya' want He spoke with a deep, low tone of embitterment. Dee knew that he was defeated.
Wonderful! Im so glad you were willing to cooperate. Now, without any sudden movements, I want you to bend down and pick up your gun. And now, come closer Without touching him, aim your gun pointblank at his head Dane spoke slowly and calmly, as if he were teaching a child how to tie their shoes. The man, Ben Marten, screamed against his gag and struggled against his bonds.
Please Forgive me. Dees hand was shaking as he turned his head away, unable to look at the man he was about to slaughter.
Shoot! Damn it, Latener, shoot him now! Dane hollered.
D-Dee A faint voice whispered.
Ryo! Dee went to turn, but Dane put his own gun to Dees head.
Shoot now!
Unable to stop himself, his fingers twitched tightly, pulling the trigger. And once he pulled it, he could not quit. He shot off the gun four times before he could stop, placing four bullets into Martens brain - killing him within seconds. Dane released a maniacal laugh, tucking his gun in his pocket to clap his hands.
Good, very good... Very well done, Dee Latener! Justice has properly been served! Thank you. Thank you for being so fair! Reaching out, Dane slapped an object into Dees hand, and then he proceeded to quickly escape the building.
Dee dropped his gun, looking downward at what he now held in his hand. A tiny silver key. Dee stared at the bleeding holes in Ben Martens head, wincing as he had to avert his gaze.
Ryo Dee rushed over, standing on his toes to unlock the bonds on Ryos wrists. As the chains slithered heavily to the ground, Ryos body tilted forward. Dee caught him, resting Ryo against himself as he leaned down to unlock Ryos ankles. Once Ryo was freed of all bonds, Dee lowered both of them to the ground, cradling Ryo gently in his arms.
Oh, god Ryo, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. C'mon, Ryo, please Answer me. Are you conscious? Ryo! Dee held Ryo closely to him, Ryos head resting in the crook between Dees neck and shoulder. Dee ran his fingers through the damp blonde hair, brushing it away from Ryos face.
Dee Dee, you You k-killed that man Ryos voice was barely audible.
Ryo I know But, I had to. I had to save you. You have to know how truly I feel for you by now, Ryo! I would do anythin anything for you, Randy McLane. I love you. I can't even understand what I jus did but, I cant regret it since it was for you. God, Im so happy I found you alive Dees chest was heaving with his short breaths, as he was releasing heavy sobs. It was impossible to stop the tears that were falling from his eyes, landing against Ryos bloody chest.
I love you, Ryo I love you so much
Ryo could hardly believe any of this was real. Dee was holding him tightly, weeping. Weeping for his sake. Dee had just killed another man, for his sake. In a nut shell, Dee just threw away his entire life, to make sure that Ryo could continue his own.
Youre so stupid, Dee How could you throw away everything you have like that?! I God, Dee, I am not worth it Ryos eyes stung with his own tears.
How can you even say that, Ryo? Youre worth more than I could ever possibly give you. Im the one who isnt worth shit. I may be stupid, but I know one thing for certain... And that is how much I feel for you. Wont you believe me now, Ryo? Dee uttered under his breath.
Dee I- I dont know what to say. Ryo hissed through clenched teeth as he tried to move. Every part of his body burned with every breath that he took.
You dont have to say anything, Ryo. It doesnt matter right now All that matters right now is getting you treatment. Dee reached down to lift Ryo up, but Ryo smacked his hands away.
I take it back, Dee I do know what to say. Weakly grabbing Dees shirt, Ryo pulled the other man downward, and pressed his cracked lips against Dees. Dee was shocked, but didnt waste the moment. A smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he returned the show of passion, tasting Ryos blood in his mouth. After a moment, Ryo broke away from Dee, offering him a weak smile, I I love you, too, Dee.
Oh, Ryo Dee cradled Ryos body in his lap, rocking back and forth gently. He placed sweet kisses against Ryos forehead. Without warning, there was a pair of arms wrapped around Dees neck.
Dee What happened here? The voice whispered into Dees ear. It was J.J. Dee refrained from shrugging the smaller male away from him, tilting his head back a bit. As he opened his lips to respond, J.J. covered Dees mouth with his hand. It wasnt your fault, Dee. You tracked down a madman who had already killed one, but you managed to stop him before he killed Randy McLane. And as you went to the aid of your partner, the madman got away. That is what happened, isnt it, Dee? J.J. smiled sincerely at Dee, removing his hand from Dees mouth.
Dee was silent for a moment, but as J.J. continued to smile at him, all that Dee could do was nod. Glancing to the ground, Dee noticed that his gun was missing. J.J. unwrapped his arms from around Dee, and stood up, taking one step backward.
Come on, we need to get Ryo to a hospital. J.J. outstretched his hand as an offering to help them up. Holding Ryo protectively against his body, Dee grabbed J.J.s hand. As he was pulled to his feet, he wrapped his other arm under Ryos legs.
You go on ahead, Dee. J.J. looked at Ryo, smiling again. You dont know how happy I am to see you alive, Ryo.
Thanks, J.J. For all of this. With another gentle kiss to Ryos forehead, Dee left the room to begin the slow and careful descent down the eight flights of stairs.
J.J. stayed behind, pulling his cell phone out of his pocket. Berkeley? Yeah, I found em. Ryo is alive, they are both safe and sound. Dee is taking Ryo to the hospital as we speak. J.J. proceeded to tell Berkeley the same story that he had explained to Dee, finishing it with, All that is left here is a body that needs to be taken care of.
