Shopping trip
Chapter 1 - Anticipation with angels and devils
Psychological and
sweet with just the slightest hint of lemon to come
Dee
had been wanting to come to this little shop for
weeks, no months. Damn it all – it had been
a year and a half since he first espied the cleverly disguised little store and
had wanted to go in right then. But he
had been under enough torture at the time.
“No more, no more, no more,” his mind sang yet again, like it had
been for the last seven weeks, “I got
what I wanted.” The burly man would
have died if the next words he heard had been spoken by any other being on this
earth.
“My goodness!
(Who really said that anyway?) Dee, you are
blushing!”
Dee
turned towards that oh-so-innocent voice.
There it was, what he wanted. A man in his late twenties, like himself;
beautiful, like himself; smart, athletic, and cheerful, like himself, was
walking towards him.
Like him and yet so different. Crisp, obedient chestnut locks compared to Dee’s unruly midnight black ones. Really only a mere inch or two shorter, this
other man looked smaller, demure and unassuming. From his posture, you just knew that he
habitually gave up his seat in the subway to old ladies or young mothers; that
he would unconsciously assist soon-to-be-mothers onto the hard plastic benches
he vacated for them.
So very kind, his
Ryo.
And this kind soul was the one who
had tortured Dee for so many, many long
months.
“No more, no more, no more,” sang his head again, “I got what I want!” Dee’s grin
widened.
“What’s that grin for?” Ryo
asked. Ryo’s face, as always, was a
direct barometer to his emotions. Right
now it read 50% exhilaration but with a strong chance of apprehension.
“50/50,” Dee thought to himself, “I could
live with that.” “Hey, Ryo,” Dee said out loud, “say it again.”
The apprehension factor went down a
step or two. It was Ryo’s turn to blush,
just a little, just under the eyes. Dee asked him to do this a lot, these days, and it was
getting more frequent instead of less.
As Ryo’s first shyness wore away, he had a little tinge of worry that Dee’s incessant demand for this one thing would become
annoying. But it hadn’t. It had gotten sweeter. Still a couple of feet away, his hands still
in the pockets of his coat, head tilted just a fraction to one side, Ryo said
in his normal speaking voice, “I love you, Dee.”
Dee’s
eyes got a little softer, though there was still a distinctive mischievous
glint to them. “Come here,” Dee said. Dee
lifted his arm out to the side and Ryo walked right up to Dee, settled his
shoulders into the waiting embrace, pressed his side into Dee’s
while turning ever so slightly towards his lover. All like it was the most natural thing in the
world.
God what a difference a few short
weeks could make. Not even two months
had passed since they had first really made love; just two and a half from
their first, fumbling attempt at sex together.
And now Ryo didn’t hesitate to walk into an embrace with him in a busy
street.
In a way, Dee
wanted to forget that first attempt; he really didn’t want to think of it as
their first time. He considered himself
a rather adroit lover and was embarrassed that for Ryo’s first experience he
had been more than a little off of his game.
“It was all Ryo’s fault it sucked,” the self defensive little demon
in his head spoke up. “Who would of thunk
that night, of all nights, after you already had two or three beers in ya, trying to forget him for the night so you could actually
get some sleep, there he was. He falls
into your bed, into your arms and suddenly everything you’ve been begging to do
for years is OK? Get real, by that point
we were thinking maybe you should begin looking around again!”
“No we weren’t!” said Dee’s better
angel authoritatively. Ah, his better
angel. For most of his life, he would
have denied that he had one but of course he did. “That
night was special and it can NOT be forgotten.
For his sake.
Was it the best sex ever, no. But that’s fine, that wasn’t the point, that
isn’t the point. He said yes–first to
himself and then to us. That courage
needs to be celebrated and adored.
Though I am not sure if this is the way to do that…”
“YES IT IS!” All the bits of
Dee, demons and angels, singers and horn-dogs swirled and meshed into the
complete id that was Dee. “After
all,” said that id, “a. this is my
party, too, and b. what better way to celebrate a victory of courage then yet
another challenge”.
“Dee?” Ryo’s voice cut through all the storming in Dee’s head. “You
know I get a little worried when you think too much.” It was said lightly and easily but it wasn’t
entirely a joke.
“Ryo,” Dee
asked, leaning his lips deliciously close to his lover’s ear, “do you trust
me?”
“Dee,” just a little more of the apprehension
was showing itself in Ryo’s voice now, just a little more tension became
apparent in the shoulders under Dee’s arm, “never in the history of the world
have the words ‘Do you trust me?’ actually engendered trust in the listener.”
Dee
chuckled, pulling Ryo even closer to him and relishing the bit of resistance he
had added to the equation just as much as he relished Ryo’s ease a moment
before. “Yep, I knew it would make you
nervous.” This was a game after
all. And to the bottom of his feet Dee knew now that Ryo trusted him. And Ryo knew that Dee
knew.
In Ryo’s stomach, his newly found
libido began to stoke in anticipation of whatever this game might be. “Well you got me here, now what?” Ryo
asked. Damn – but he still couldn’t
control that raspyness that crept into his voice
whenever he started to get turned on.
But that edge in Ryo’s voice had an
equal effect on the taller detective, making him catch his breath. Dee’s
insides turned to mush, yet again. He
almost relented and changed his plan. He
almost told Ryo he had invited him here to take a romantic walk. Here in the deepest center of Greenwich
Village, the gay-est heart of the gay-est neighborhood in all Manhattan, even two male NYPD detectives
could walk arm in arm safe from any unwanted notice. Here they were the norm and could even go sit
on a park bench holding hands and talking about nothing as they twined and
tangled their fingers together just as easily as the straight couples did in
Central Park.
Then, as Dee turned his head to
look at his lover tucked up next to him, the corner of his eye caught the gaudy
window display of the shop he had been longing to go into for so, so long. His resolve was cemented. Instead of the soft open face he was going to
show Ryo a split second ago, it was the glinted eyes and secretive grin that he
had flashed at Ryo rather often recently as he had worked to hatch this plan.
“We’re going shopping.” Dee
said. He started to steer Ryo, seemingly
casually towards his ultimate destination.
“Oh,” said Ryo, almost
disappointed. Shopping in the village,
where was the game in that. Take this shop they were walking up to
now. It had a truly beautiful window
display. Rich scarves and tapestries,
all of different hues and yet working together, covered the back partition and
the little stands and risers. And
scattered throughout the window were similarly sized boxes, decorated in
metallic paints in a color family just a couple of tones lighter then the
cloths. The only strange thing was that
each box, instead of its opening facing out into the street where the public
could admire their contents, faced up instead.
And though you could tell there was something inside of each box, not
enough of anything showed above the lips for you to guess what it was from the
middle of the sidewalk.
But there was nothing here to cause
that smirk on Dee’s face or the one that Dee
had worn when he invited Ryo to this rendezvous. And yet this was the shop Dee
was now definitely pointing them to.
“What are we shopping for?” Ryo decided to ask,
sure that Dee wouldn’t give him a real answer.
“We’re going to shop for our
anniversary.” Dee
answered.
This sudden openness was not the
way Dee usually played a game. Usually he was more like a little kid; so
excited that he would tell anyone and everyone that he had a secret while at
the same time enjoying the power that his secret had over people too much to
let any little bit of information leak out.
Having got one answer, Ryo tried for another, “Which anniversary?”
“Two weeks from yesterday,” Dee started in an unexpectedly serious voice, “it will be
exactly three months from the night you finally said ‘yes’.” There was the marvelously deep resonance of
pride in Dee’s voice. “It’s the anniversary of you saying yes to
yourself, to me, and to us.”
What a beautiful gesture this
was! Ryo had known for a long time that
all Dee’s roughness was just a vain attempt to
hide a truly beautiful soul. Now Ryo was
dying to see what was in those boxes in the window of the store Dee had obviously chosen very carefully for this
mission. This beautiful little store
would be where they would both pick out special remembrances for each
other. But being the tease that he was, Dee was keeping himself between Ryo and the display.
Ryo was thinking how really very
cute Dee was, with this whole secretive
shopping trip. Then the two of them
finally reached the door of the shop. Dee suddenly stepped back, practically forcing Ryo to see
the truth of the window display all in one overwhelming blow.
“DEE!” Ryo squealed and then his mouth stayed open
like that as his feet seemed to become one with the concrete below.
In each gorgeous box sitting in
those luscious swaths of fabric was a different sex toy.
