Chapter 1: The Tournament
Lan and Mega Man were sitting at home nearing the end of summer vacation and surprisingly, Lan had finished his work to be done over vacation. With no messages from Mr. Famous or Dentech City Police requiring help from the Net Savers, they found themselves severely bored.
“Mega Maaaan, I’m bored. Send a message to Chaud challenging him to a net battle will you?”
“Sorry Lan. Can’t do that, he’s in Bright Land right now on a mission remember? But why don’t you contact Maylu and the others and see if they want to go to the arcade or something.”
“I have an even better idea, Megaman.”
“You, an idea, that’s a first.”
“Very funny. Send out a message to everyone in my address book challenging them to a tournament at the Net Coliseum. That should prove to be fun.”
“Not bad Lan. That’s the first good thought you’ve had in… I can’t remember how long and you know how good my memory chip is.”
“What do you mean I can’t join in?!? It was MY idea.” Lan whined after 9 Navis showed up for his proposed tournament. “Why can’t Higsby sit out, or Shuuko? Please,” he begged “I’m bored. I’ll do ANYTHING to join.”
Maylu, tired of Lan’s constant begging to get his way, decided to put him in his place. “There’s two reasons you can’t join in Lan Hikari. First of all, you’re 20 minutes late and you’re the one who set the time. I figured you’d at least be on time for your tournament. Secondly, It’s more fair if you, the self-proclaimed ‘Greatest Net battler in the world’ didn’t participate. Maaybe if you’re nice, we’ll let you battle us after the tournament’s over.”
“Alright, but I’d better get some free curry for sitting this out.” As if on cue his stomach rumbled loud enough for everyone to hear.
The other 8 Navi’s went to the stands to enjoy the battles going on and to await their turn. Before too long the first match was announced: “Will Guts Man and Roll please report to the battle arena.”
“Guts Man no want to fight Roll. Guts Man say choose again.”
“Come on Guts Man, I know you don’t want to lose to a girl again do you. I know I don’t and as your NetOp I command you to get down there and fight.”
“Awright, if you say so Dex.”
In a close match Roll was narrowly defeated by the hard headed Guts Man’s Guts Thump.
Through analyzing the timing and attack patterns of Skull Man’s Bonemerang, Number Man was able to advance through to the next round as did Ice Man with his upset victory over Wood Man. In the final prelim match, Spout Man tried to use his innocence and his flooding to drown Shark Man, but to no avail as his Fin Cutter easily cut through Spout Man’s dream of winning. The semifinals had Guts Man overpowering the lithe Number Man and Ice Man putting Shark Man’s chances on cyber ice.
“You mean it’s my Guts Man versus that little Eskimo wannabe. I’ve got this tournament won hands down. “
“He may look small but he’s got enough power to send your mammoth back into the Ice Age.”
“Oooh, we’re going to go see a movie Dex? Guts Man like movies.”
“Guts Man, I told you not to embarrass me anymore. Why didn’t I get a Navi with a larger memory?” <sigh>
The announcer said the final match would take place after both participants had a chance to recover and restore their battle chips.
After what seemed like an eternity to Dex, Tory, and Lan, who couldn’t wait to get to the local #1 Curry Store, the final match was finally called to the arena. As the battle commenced, Guts Man started with a Guts thump which was countered using panel out. Ice Man then launched a Trispear, but Guts Man got out of the way just in time. The battle continued on like this for quite a while to the delight of all the spectators.
In desperation, Dex decides to make a projectile of his Navi as a last ditch effort. “Dash, battle chip in, download!” and Guts Man shoots off right into a tornado launched by ice man making a giant Guts Man top. Tory then followed up with an Aqua Tower, followed up with Ice Man’s Cyber Blizzard to freeze the bulky Navi in a pillar of ice. “Ice Man, finish this now. Fire Blade, battle chip in download!” And with one mighty swipe of the sword, Guts Man was logged out and Tory and Ice Man won the tournament.
At the curry shop after everyone had their fill, which took awhile figuring the appetites of Lan and Dex, Lan invited everyone over to his house for a sleepover and more battling in the morning if anyone was up for it. Unfortunately only Dex and Tory were able to make it since Higsby was too old and Maylu felt her project needed more fine tuning, despite everyone’s assurances that it was already going to be the best in the class. After saying their goodbyes, Maylu and Higsby went their own way and the three guys headed back to Lan‘s for a sleepover to find that Mrs. Hikari had to leave town for a couple of days to take care of Lan‘s grandfather, so the boys had the night to themselves.
Author‘s Note: This is my first story and I have a few ideas for the upcoming chapters, but I‘d like a little feedback on my writing before I get too engrossed in what I‘m into and bore you to death. The next chapter will be Yaoi, and should be up soonish..
