Chapter 1
Sasame
struggled for breath through the pain of his wounds, inhaling the heavy scent
of his own blood. He knew he was dying. He could die happy, though, knowing
that he had confessed his love and that Takako had
finally understood…
He smiled slightly, looking at his
love, his mistress… the ex-Prétear who was no longer
the Princess of Destruction. Yes, he had forsaken his comrades and his duty and
fought against, even tried to kill his friends and the Prétear
he served… and yet he could die unrepentant, for every sin he had knowingly and
unknowingly committed, knowing that Takako loved him
back, that she was saved from her darkness…
He wanted to say something more,
but he had worn himself out trying to comfort Takako…
it was worth it. He may never say another word, but he had
been given more than most, and he had said what needed saying.
Takako
was crying. Himeno was on the verge. Even Hayate sounded as though he regretted that which was coming to pass.
He only looked at his love and
smiled gently as the heaviness in his eyelids took his vision away, listening
immobile for a long time, content that Himeno would
save Takako from herself, before that too finally
faded into oblivion.
“Himeno…?”
Hayate
knelt beside the body of the girl he thought he loved. She lay so still and
peaceful in the patch of flowers that blew gently in the breeze around her, but
she didn’t answer him. He thought he heard her father stifle a sob. It didn’t
matter to him.
Himeno
was dead.
She had died to save them all.
But she
had still died.
“She’s the legendary white Prétear,” Kei said from somewhere behind him. His voice was
too emotionless. Cold.
“She was…” His own voice was
distant in his ears, and he hadn’t realized he was going to speak until he
heard it. “She was the legendary white Prétear, but
she gave her life to save this world…”
There was silence. That, or perhaps he simply could hear nothing else. He was
sure he could have heard the slightest palpitation of her heart, had it had a
beat left in it, as though he had Sasame’s abilities.
He would have given all of his energy and faded away, if he thought he could
bring her back…
“Just one more time…” he murmured. “Let me see that smile just one more time…”
A passenger in his own body, he
slowly leaned forward and gently touched her lips with his own. He wanted her
to be alive so badly. He knew she understood, but he had never told her that he
loved her. He wanted so badly to have her back, if only to tell her that one
thing. Even if she didn’t love him, he would give anything to have her back…
He remembered hearing Takako cry similar pleas on Sasame’s
behalf, and to no avail.
Perhaps he had half expected that
his kiss would return her to life. It would be poetic, for the universe to tell
him that it was all a dream, a cruel trick, a joke at his expense. If so, he
was sorely disappointed. She remained cold and lifeless, unresponsive for all
her innocent beauty.
He realized that it was the end.
She wasn’t going to come back. She wasn’t going to sit up and hit him for
kissing her. She wasn’t going to blush and stammer her way out of the
relationship he wanted.
She wasn’t going to do anything.
Ever.
She was dead.
His hands tightened into fists as
his head bowed, the tears pressing against his eyelids. He let them fall.
“Is Hayate
going to be okay?”
Kei looked at the knights
surrounding him. It was Shin who had spoken, but they all, even Goh, were watching him
expectantly. The attention was foreign; it wasn’t often that both Hayate and Sasame died, or were
incapacitated, making him the leader…
He nodded slowly. “He will recover,
physically. His wounds were serious, but he’ll heal.”
Shin smiled in relief, and Hajime
relaxed visibly. Even Goh seemed relieved.
Mannen
was the only one to see past it. “You said he was physically all right… but
what else? Does that mean he’s not really all right?”
With a slight sigh, he nodded at
the icy boy. “Yes… that’s what I mean. He loved Himeno,
and to lose her like that… it will take him a while to be himself again. And…”
All four of the younger knights had
their eyes glued to him now, expecting him to take care of everything, to know
everything, to tell them everything. It was hard, and he had to close his
golden eyes for a moment…
“And…?” Goh
prompted when he didn’t speak.
“And…” He sighed and decided to go
on. They deserved to know. “And he blames Sasame for
everything. If he’s reborn before Hayate forgives him
for loving Takako, and for everything that made him do, then…”
“Are they going to fight again?”
Shin asked, looking tearfully up at him.
“It’s likely,” he admitted heavily.
“And Sasame won’t even know why he’s being punished;
he won’t remember this life when he’s born again, just as none of you three
remember the fight with Takako the first time…”
The boys looked nervously at each
other; Goh just looked like he wanted to hit
something. He could understand that reaction, even if he couldn’t allow himself
to be that uncontrolled. Look at all the problems the emotions of two strong
knights had caused… this was why he thought as he did, why he encouraged them
all to believe as he did, even if he knew it wasn’t likely to happen. Perhaps
something had happened to him in a former life to make him feel this way, and
perhaps he had always been this way, but regardless, it made everything
simpler. Sasame had died because he loved. Hayate would surely create a rift in their group because he
had loved. Loving only caused problems, and was best avoided…
“What are we gonna do?” Hajime
finally asked, looking up at him. Everyone else had their
eyes on him as well. He sighed and ran one hand through his ponytail before he
answered.
“We can’t let Hayate
see him, even if he is reborn, before he’s moved on. He’ll only hate him, and
punish a child for something he did in a past life,
and that won’t help either of them. We can’t have two of our most powerful
knights hating each other. We’ll all need to work together, and if Hayate still holds a grudge against Sasame,
he may never be able to do so. If he ever needed to, he may choose not to
protect Sasame, or he may distract him, or be distracted…
We can’t allow that to happen.”
“So we have to hide him when he
comes back,” Mannen summed up. “Keep them separate.”
“Precisely.” He met each pair of
eyes in turn. “Can I count on you all?”
As the chorus of affirmatives
surrounded him, Kei reflected that this might be all in vain; they would be
lucky if Sasame was reborn at all.
