When Two Hearts Come
Together
Chapter 1:
Healing a Broken Heart
It hadn't been long since a
truce had been made between the men of planet Tarak and the women
of the planet Mejer. It was a time of cautious optimism, but at
least the foundation for peace between the two genders had
finally been laid. The men Hibiki Tokai, Bart Garsus and the
Nirvana's resident doctor Duero Mcfile had returned to Tarak to
bring back perspective male candidates to stay aboard the Nirvana
with the female pirates who had become their comrades and
friends. Dita went with them as she could not think of being
parted from her dear Hibiki whom had yet to convince her that he
was not an alien.
Things had been realitively
quiet on the Nirvana after the men and Dita left. So quiet that
they'd actually become rather dull and boring. Ezra was kept busy
with her position at the helm of the Nirvana as well as being a
mother to her little daughter Kalua. Gascumue managed to
reestablish the sunny disposition of the girls of the Reg crew,
though Barnette had done a pretty good job of keeping morale up
in her absence. Parfet continued working with the Pexis trying to
figure the thing out.
Dealing with a machine was one
thing, but dealing with a machine that had become a living thing
was another. She'd been a little off though since Duero had
returned to Tarak. She had to admit that he had affected her in a
way that she never thought any man would. Though she wasn't
afraid of men the way so many of the women of Mejer were, she
didn't think she'd ever go so close to one. Duero had an affect
upon her that was hard for her to figure out.
Her pulse would race everytime
she saw him or heard his voice. Her heart beat fast, her breath
would start to speed up, and she felt a warm tingly feeling race
all through her body when he looked at her with his deep blue
eyes. It was hard for her to explain why this happened only
around Duero. It didn't happen with Hibiki or Bart. It didn't
happen with any other guy she'd ever seen either. It was only
Duero that made her feel this way.
After a long day working with
the Pexis, Parfet decided she needed to take a long overdue
break. She also decided that she needed to talk to someone about
the feelings she was developing for Duero, but most of the women
would not be up to such conversation. But there was one female
aboard the Nirvana who did have an understanding of how men and
women interacted with each other...Misti. If anyone could help
Parfet understand what she was feeling, it would be her.
Misti was in her room when she
heard a knock at her door. "Who is it?" She asked.
"It's Parfet. Can I come
in please? I need to ask you something." Parfet said.
"Oh sure. Come in
Parfet." Misti said with a cheerful tone.
Parfet walked in and sat down
on Misti's bed. "So what's on your mind Parfet?"
"Well, you seem to
understand how things work between men and women, so I thought
maybe you could help me with something I wanted to know."
Parfet answered.
"Um, a little bit. Tell
me what it is you want to know, and I'll try my best to answer it
for you." Misti said.
"It's our doctor, Duero
Mcfile. I don't really know how to explain it, but everytime I'm
around him I feel funny." Parfet replied.
"How exactly do you feel
funny around him?" Misti asked.
"I feel my heart start to
speed up. I start breathing faster, and I feel, well, kind of
tingly all over. My knees get wobbly and sometimes I find it hard
to even speak when I'm around him. Just thinking bout him even
makes me do this. I don't know what's happening to me, but all I
can think about lately is him. I...I really miss him being
here." Parfet explained.
"Am I going crazy?"
She asked nervously.
Misti giggled and gave Parfet
a friendly smile. "Sounds to me like you've got it
bad."
"Got what?"
"You're in love
silly!" Misti said with a loud giggle.
"I am?" Parfet
asked.
"Yes, you're defintely in
love with Duero. Not that I can blame you. He is a pretty hot
looking doctor." Misti commented.
"And this is normal for a
woman to feel this way around a man?" Parfet asked.
"Around a man she really
likes, yes. It's very normal. I guess for you though it is a bit
strange seeing as you've never been around a guy before. But it's
defintely normal." Misti answered.
"Wow, I didn't realize
that men and women could feel this way about each other. I hope
Duero comes back to the Nirvana soon. I...really miss him."
Parfet replied with a sigh.
"I wouldn't worry about
it Parfet. I'm sure Duero will be back soon. The Nirvana isn't
going to function too well without a doctor on board." Misti
said.
"I guess I better get
back to engineering and make sure everything's going all right.
The Pexis can be pretty unpredictable. Sometimes I don't know
what it will do next."
#################################
Captain Magno Vivan sat in her
chair. Things on the bridge were pretty slow and ho hum since the
men weren't there. "I hope those young men hurry up and find
some suitable candidates for this experiment. It's boring as hell
around here."
BC approached the captain
after recieving a message from Mejer. "Captain, there's been
a message from Mejer. I...I'm afraid there's been an accident on
one of the living units. It has to deal with Parfet's
family." She said with a serious tone.
"What's happened?"
Magno asked concerned.
"It's Parfet's older
sister, Rachel. She has been reported as a fatality in the
accident." BC reported.
"Oh no. Rachel and Parfet
were very close. They wanted to leave together, but their oma was
very ill so Rachel had to stay behind. Those damned living units
have become a curse to us. They're the reason we ended up having
to leave our home in the first place. BC, you better go get
Parfet. I'll meet you both in my personal quarters. This sort of
news isn't something that needs to be reported in front of
everyone." Magno said.
"And BC..."
"Yes captain."
"Send word to Tarak. We
need Duero back as soon as possible."
"Right away
Captain."
#################################
Duero Mcfile was going over
his medical journals when a young man knocked on the door to his
quarters. "Come in." He said quietly.
"Doctor Mcfile. Excuse
the intrusion, but I've recieved word from Lord Grandpa that you
are to return to the Nirvana immediately. One of the women is
believed to be in need of your assistance. The chief engineer I
believe."
"Parfet?" Duero said
with a great measure of concern. "Send word to the captain
I'll be there immediately." Duero said and quickly closed
his journals. He quickly packed his gear and headed from his
quarters in a hurry. The young man shrugged his shoulders. The
women certainly had made quite a change in the normally pensive
and serious doctor.
Duero soon arrived back on the
Nirvana where the captain and BC were waiting for him. "I'm
glad to see you were able to come so quickly Doctor Mcfile. There
has been an incident upon our home world of Mejer concerning one
of Parfet's family members." BC reported.
"I'm afraid her older
sister Rachel was killed in an accident back home. I had her
brought back to my quarters so I could break the news to her in
private. She's very distraught and hasn't left her room since
hearing the news. I needed to bring you back here because I know
she's become very close to you. You're being here I hope will
help her cope through her loss. I hope we didn't take you away
from anything critical." The Captain said with a serious
voice.
"Of course not Captain.
There are plenty of doctors on Tarak that can handle the work
load. My presence here won't be a problem. I'll go see what I can
do for Parfet. I can give her something to help calm her nerves,
but I must confess I don't know what I can do to help her other
wise. As much as I wish I could, I can't bring back the dead. I
know about mending broken bones and healing illness and disease,
but this is something I don't have much knowledge in." Duero
replied.
"Son, the best thing
right now you can do is just be there for her. Not all ills and
wounds are healed with pills or medical procedures. Sometimes to
heal a broken heart, one must give of his or her own heart in the
process. She might not say it openly or even know it yet, but she
is very fond of you Duero. I'd go so far to say that she cares
for you a great deal. Sometimes the best medicine is a kind and
gentle word or even just the feel of one's arms around the person
who's hurting can do wonders. You might not understand it now,
but in time...you will." The Magno explained.
Duero nodded and then headed
for Parfet's room. The captain accompanied him in case he needed
a little help persuading Parfet to let him in. She knocked on the
door calling for Parfet.
"Parfet dear, there's
someone here to see you." She said kindly.
"I...I just want to be
alone right now captain."
"Parfet..." Duero
said softly.
A few seconds passed and the
door suddenly opened. There was Parfet standing in the door way.
She'd removed her glasses. Her big blue eyes red from the tears
she'd shed. "Duero!" She cried and rushed toward him
hugging him tightly. She began to sob uncontrollably. The young
doctor didn't know exactly what to do at this point. Then he
remembered what the captain had suggested to him. He put his arms
around the sobbing engineer.
"It's ok now Parfet. I'm
here. I'll get you something to calm your nerves." He said.
"Please, don't leave
Duero! Don't leave us again! Don't leave me again!" Parfet
exclaimed.
"It's all right Parfet.
I'm not going anywhere. I'll take you to the infermary and get
you something to help calm your nerves." Duero replied
reassuringly.
Magno turned to leave. She
stopped for a second. "Duero, thank you for coming back on
such short notice."
"It's no trouble
captain." Duero replied.
#################################
Barnette saw Duero and Parfet
walking toward the infermary. "What's wrong with
Parfet?" She asked. The Captain walked behind them.
"It's all right Barnette.
Come with me and I'll explain everything. Duero and Parfet need
some private time." Magno answered.
"Private time...with a
man?" Barnette asked skeptically.
"Yes Barnette. Things are
getting ready to change in a big way around here so you might as
well start getting used to it now. Parfet's older sister Rachel
was killed in an accident back home. I asked Duero to come back
and stay with us. Parfet has become very close to him, and though
he may not yet understand it, he's become very close to her as
well. His being here I think will help Parfet cope with the loss
of her sister." She answered.
"But he's a man. He
doesn't know how to handle a woman's emotions. He's a doctor and
knows about the body maybe but..."
"He is learning how to
handle affairs of the heart Barnette. If he wants to be the best
doctor he can be, then he needs to learn these things especially
dealing with women. Just let them be Barnette."
"If you say so
captain."
#################################
Duero gave Parfet a small
capsule and a glass of water. "This will help you
relax." He said quietly.
Parfet took the pill and
swallowed it down with the water. Duero stood beside her next to
the examining table. He didn't know what to say to her. He just
sat beside her watching her as she wiped tears from her eyes.
"Parfet, I'm...I'm very
sorry you lost your sister." Duero said trying to find some
way to comfort her. Parfet looked up at him through tear stained
eyes. She leaned her head on his chest and let the tears flow
once more. Duero put his arms around her as she pressed her face
against his chest.
"It's not fair! It's just
not fair!" She cried.
Duero struggled to think of
something to say to console her. He thought but couldn't find
words he felt were comforting enough. He sighed and said the only
thing he knew to say.
"I wish I could say
something or do something to make the pain easier to bear."
Parfet looked up at the doctor
with teary eyes. She raised a hand to wipe the tears from her
face. "Please...you don't have to say anything. That you're
here is enough." She said with a shaky voice.
"If you say so Parfet,
then I will be here for you." Duero said.
"Thank you Duero. I'm
glad you're back." Parfet replied silently resting her head
against his chest.
"I missed you so
much." She sighed.
"I...I missed you too
Parfet. It felt like something was missing when I was away from
the Nirvana." Duero replied.
"Really?" Parfet
asked lifting her head up to look at Duero's face.
"Yes. Did you feel that
way too?" He asked.
"Yah, it did. I kept
thinking bout you every day you were gone from the Nirvana. I was
hoping you'd be back soon. I just...I wished it didn't have to be
because of this." Parfet said.
"I thought about you a
lot too Parfet. I must confess I don't exactly understand what is
happening between us, but somehow it doesn't feel as strange as
it did when we first met." Duero replied.
"I admit when we first
met I didn't think men and women could have any sort of feelings
for each other. But you and I have gotten closer to each other.
The first person I wanted to see after hearing about my
sister...well, was you." Parfet said.
Duero was a little suprised by
the statement. Out of all who were on the Nirvana, all the women,
Parfet wanted to see him the most. He began to realize just how
much regard was held for him in Parfet's heart.
He looked down to see Parfet's
eyes growing heavy. "I feel so...tired." She said
wearily.
"It's the tranquilizer
taking affect. I'll take you back to your room." Duero said
gathering her tired body into his arms. He carried her back to
her room and lay her down on her bed. Then he took a blanket and
covered her up with it.
"Duero..." Parfet
said with a yawn.
"Yes Parfet." He
replied.
"Will you stay with me
til I fall asleep?" She asked as her eyes grew even heavier.
"Yes. I'll stay with you
until you're asleep. If you need me I'll be in the
infermery." Duero answered standing beside Parfet's bed.
"O...k." Parfet said
with another yawn and began to drift off to sleep.
After a few moments passed
Parfet was fast asleep. Duero quietly walked out of her room and
closed her door. He took a piece of paper and put it on the
outside of her door asking anyone who came by not to disturb her.
He then walked back to the infermery and started unpacking his
things.
The captain's voice came over
his intercom while he was in the midst of unpacking his medical
journals. "Doctor, is Parfet all right?" She asked.
"For the time being,
she's asleep. I gave her a tranquilizer to help calm her nerves
and let her rest. This is going to be a very hard time for her
Captain. But I think she's going to be all right." Duero
answered.
"Duero, I know I've said
this once already, but I wanted to thank you again for coming
back. It's been a long time since I've seen a man and woman grow
into this kind of a relationship. Parfet missed you a great deal
when you were away. I think you're being here is going to be the
best medicine for her." Magno said.
"I think you're right
Captain. She said that she thought of me a great deal while I was
on Tarak. And I have to admit I thought a great deal about her as
well. I felt like something was missing when I went back to
Tarak. And I felt like I'd found that missing piece of myself
when I came back here."
"You both are more alike
than either of you realize. I think you two will see what I mean
as time goes on. I'll let you get back to unpacking your things.
Don't get too comfortable though doctor. I think Ezra will be
bringing Kalua in for an exam soon. She's a little over
protective I admit. Just humor her and things will be fine."
"Is the baby all
right?" Duero asked. "I can examine her now if that
will make Ezra feel more at ease."
"They'll be just fine for
now. I think the baby is just adjusting to all the changes going
on with the crew. By the way, when are Bart, Hibiki and Dita
coming back?" The captain inquired.
"They should be arriving
within the week. A group of candidates have been chosen. They're
going through physical and mental exams to make sure they're
appropriate for the experiment." Duero answered.
"Good. Well I'll leave
you alone now and let you get resettled. Let me know if anything
changes with Parfet."
"Of course Captain. Good
night."
