((This is the second fanfiction I've written and the first one posted here. This fanfiction has also been posted with the makinlemonaide yahoo group. This occurs sometime after the volume 5 of the manga or after episodes 15 & 16 of the Anime (depending which way you want to look at it)… no actual full on spoilers but slight references to minor occurrences between the characters up to that point. Please excuse any oc.))

What to do? It's been bothering me since I found out I have to go out of town. Normally I'd leave my Haruhi at home alone; have her check in with a couple of the neighbors and have the landlady "drop by." But nothing is working out the way I planned. One of the neighbors is on a business trip and will be gone longer than me, and the other is out of the country on vacation. Surely I can trust the landlady to keep an eye out for Haruhi, but as I was about to knock on the door she almost knocked me over. She mumbled something so quickly, that I didn't catch much except "family," "illness," and "I must leave." I must have stood there for several moments, to stunned to move. This is a sudden business trip and several of my trusted coworkers are also going. Since school's still in session she can't just stay in Karuizawa at Misuzu's pensione again. There's really no family in town, and all the people she used to stay with in Junior High she hasn't kept in contact with.
That leaves her high school friends… Of course they're all guys. What's a father to do? Let's think about this there must be an option amongst them. Six guys in total. Let's start with Tamaki,
the club's president, which will never work. After all, the boy keeps trying to convince himself and others that Haruhi is his daughter. Of course I don't think he'd do anything, he's as clueless
as I was as a young man. There's Kyoya, the club's vice president, the only one who made a point to keep me up to date about Haruhi. Responsible to a point, but he seems to wear a smirk that makes him look like the cat that ate the canary. I might as well paint her yellow, and stick the feathers in her hair myself. There's no exact reason not to trust him, but I just wouldn't get any work done. The twins, Hikaru and Kaoru, they're just completely out of the question. Most of what Haruhi tells me about them includes practical jokes and the like; which would be fine but with two of them. Any option that automatically outnumbers my daughter is out. Then there is Mitsukuni, Hunny, and the smallest of the group. I've heard that his martial art skills are unmatched, but I've known too many men who are "cute." Cuteness alone will not ease my mind. Which only leaves one choice, Takashi, or Mori-sempai as Haruhi often calls him. From the times I've met him and the stuff Haruhi's mentioned about him I think he's my only option. But how do I start to ask about this?
As it turns out it was a lot easier than I thought, after I call Kyoya. It seems that Kyoya also recommends Mori as the most logical option because his house is closest to our apartment. Kyoya even sets it all up. Now the hard part, how to tell Haruhi…

As I arrive home I am surprised to find Dad, he's all dressed up and holding two bags in his hands. This is not the part that concerns, it's that one of the bags is mine. I look from his face to the bags and back again. The next thing I know he's pushing me out the door. As I turn on him it hits me, he's going out of town. Only one word escapes my lips, "Where?"
That's how I now find myself on Mori-sempai' s doorstep. I'm going to kill my father when he gets back into town, at least that's my thought as I watch his cab pull away. He explained why, but I'm old enough. I should ring gate's bell, but instead put my forehead against the wood. Maybe no one will notice if I just stand here like this. Someone up at the house must be paying close attention, because the next thing I know is the door is pulled open. Completely off balance I stumble into the courtyard, almost doing a face plant. A few inches from the ground, I can now appreciate the stonework, instead of having a full on experience with it. But wait. Mori-sempai straightens me out and sets me down.
This is not the only time he's picked me up like I weigh little more than a feather. Reality sets in as my school bag and overnight bag are pulled from my hands. That's one thing I can always be comforted by his ability to say nothing and yet at the same time accomplish so much. The courtyard door is now closed, and we walk down the path to the house together. It's only a few days; I know I could stay by myself. We reach the door to the house quicker than I expect, he just holds it open for me and I go in. I do not know what I expected, but the house is nice. A woman with a warm smile greets us she's about thirty-five years of age; she pulls me further into the house. She says her name so fast I don't catch it at all. Did she just say Mori something or other? There's a brief apology about having to stay in the guesthouse since there is construction at the main house. This place is massive enough, to imagine that it is not the main house. Oh the life of the rich.
It's gotten late after all I was held up late at the club, studying in the library, shopping, and this impromptu housing arrangement. She offers me food but I'm too nervous to eat, nodding she asks me to wait a moment while my room is prepared… I sit in a small love seat, with beautifully velvety texture. I sit there tracing the pattern in the fabric with my fingers. It's then that I look up, and Mori is standing there. He's eating something, sushi of some sort; I'm so bad with the names of most sushi. He walks over extending the plate in front of him; the chopsticks are on the plate. My stomach jumps a little; maybe I'm actually hungry. It's good, really, really, good. I start to say so, but as though he's read my thoughts he smiles. All that was left on the plate is gone; gosh did I just eat all that by myself. He's going to think I never get feed at home.
He just sort of bows his head down, turns and is gone. Before I have time to consider this, I realize that the woman has already appeared. We walk down one of the many hallways, she points down different ones explaining that Satoshi is staying down one of them, Mori down another, of course by this time I'd be surprised if I could even manage to find the front door. I think she must have also said something about the bathroom being a little difficult to find. The room is nice, in a guest room sort of way. But it smelled so clean, as I look at the western style bed, I have to admit I'm a little surprised. I see my bag folded nicely and set on top of what must be the dresser. I pull open the drawer and see my stuff has been put away. Seeing the items the drawers hold, makes my head hang just a little. Dad sure did pack the stuff he thinks I should be wearing. Thank God, my normal t-shirt and shorts I wear to sleep in are here.
I change quickly, glancing for a moment at my school bag. There is some studying I should be doing, but I'll just my head down for a moment. It was only a few chapters and the test isn't for a week. The bedding surrounds me as I plunk onto the bed, it so soft. One of my friends had a comforter like this it was a down something or other. As I attempt to recapture the words, I find my eyes closing. My brain still saying you didn't turn out the light yet.

When Kyoya first mentioned to me that Haruhi's father wanted her to stay at my house I was surprised to say the least. I made sure to explain that my brother and myself were at the guesthouse while remodeling of the main house is completed. Kyoya said as long as my family didn't mind. I mentioned it to Nakamori, she acts almost like the butler when guests come to stay. Normally we just fend for ourselves, and the cook is the only one on the staff we interact with much. Our drivers rotate out, dependent on their schedules, but normally Mitsukuni comes by with his driver to pick me up.
I am surprised to find myself unsure of what to do. Kyoya did mention that he thought Haruhi's father hadn't told her yet. That would explain why she hadn't mentioned it at the club this afternoon, and waved only a fast goodbye as she headed to study. Nakamori, calls out that a cab has pulled up to the gate. As I reach it I think I hear a faint thud, it almost sounds like a knock, doesn't she know there's a bell right there. Without giving it much thought I pull open the door. It's then that it occurs to me she had just hit her head against the door, this was a common Haruhi occurrence especially when dealing with Tamaki. As I see her stumble forward, I grab her sides and right her. I flash back to the few other times that I've done this, the other that stands out the most when I first realized she was a girl. Shaking my head I realize that I'm being impolite and take her bags after closing the door.
She follows behind in what would be my blind spot if I were a car. We reach the house quickly and upon entering Nakamori greets Haruhi. Nakamori takes Haruhi's bags from me. Seeing that Nakmori will take care of Haruhi for now I decide to go back to my snack. There was some sushi left from dinner earlier, and so I start eating it. My curiosity gets the better of me, as I walk back towards the main parlor. There sitting on one of the love seats is Haruhi, looking so lost. Her fingers tracing the patterns in the fabric, small goose bumps form on my arms as I remember the feel of the fabric. She looks up, that wide-eyed expression of hers, I wonder if she knows I've been watching her. I extend the plate I'm carrying, closing the distance of the room in but a moment. She at first looks unsure. Then finishes the few remaining pieces, I can see that she likes it by the way she's eating them. It's almost the look she gives when eating strawberries, she's about to say something when Nakamori comes back to tell her that the room is ready. Bowing my head so she can see me I exit the room.
It's been warm the last few nights, so I decide to just sleep in my boxers. The temperature in the house could be made cooler but sometimes you don't what to have to wear more. I had recently started sleeping on a western style bed, since I started staying in the guesthouse; they sure have a different feel to them. The lights off I lay down covering myself with only the top sheet; I stare at the ceiling for what seems a moment before being pulled into sleep.
