Disclaimer: I do not own Fushigi Yuugi, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Summary: Direct sequel to Comfort. Miaka finds out about Tama and Tas and takes it badly, and
something strange is happening to the guys.
Will she come to her senses before time runs out?
Author’s Notes: My great thanks to everyone who reviewed
Comfort; your encouragement really helped me get the story out. ^o^
To Miaka lovers (if there are any): keep in mind that while I think she
is a completely self-centered, immature and annoying little twat (hey, I was
pretty annoying too when I was her age!), she has a good heart, so bear with
the story for a bit. Any ElfQuest fans
out there might “recognize” some things.
Just bear with me if I miss some of the details; it’s been a while since
I last saw the series. And there won’t
be any changes to this story, I’m just trying to clean up some formatting
issues.
Oh, and life-force energy = Qi (Chinese, pinyin) = Chi
(Chinese, Wade-Giles) = Ki (Japanese)
Without further ado:
Meltdown
Ch. 1: Breaking Apart
************************************************************************
‘This is torture,’ Tasuki thought, sitting in his room
moping.
One crisis after another had kept Tamahome from telling
Miaka about them, and as a result they had chosen to keep their distance from
each other for a while. Miaka deserved
an explanation first. Which landed him
in his current predicament: sitting alone in his room, brooding.
Staying apart was the right thing, he knew, but the tension
was wearing on Tasuki’s nerves. On the
one hand, he didn’t want to hurt the Priestess, and on the other hand he wanted
Tamahome back in his arms.
The worst thing had been Soi’s appearance. He knew immediately that she was the one who
had saved Suboshi’s life from the waves of fury rolling off of Tamahome. However, Miaka had used the Holy Sword to
get rid of her. He started toward
Tamahome as soon as he could move again, but Miaka beat him there, eyes
sparkling with pride that she was the one saving them for a change. Tasuki cringed as he saw Tamahome force
himself to smile through the rage.
The urge to run over and hold Tamahome had been
overwhelming, but he managed to stop himself.
He actually felt jealous when Tamahome spoke to Miaka, but it went away
as Tamahome caught his eye. The
frustration he read there silently reassured him that Tamahome felt the strain,
too.
And he didn’t even want to think about how damned
horny he’d been over the last couple of days.
It was a constant urge and he wasn’t entirely sure he could stop himself
from dragging Tamahome off behind the
nearest bush and screwing his brains out as soon as they hit land. He was really going nuts. Whenever the other seishi was near, or
whenever he was watching Tasuki, the bandit could swear he could actually feel
it. But that wasn’t possible. Right?
Nuriko chose that moment to show up. “Hey, Tasuki! We’re almost to Hokkan, and Chiriko’s got some ideas on where we
should start looking. Want to come
hear? You’ve been in here all day!”
Tasuki grumbled at him.
“Not right now. Go ‘way.”
Nuriko huffed at him, putting his hands on his hips. “Look, I don’t know what’s up with you
lately, but it’s clear you need a distraction.
Now, are you gonna walk, or do I have to drag you?”
Tasuki considered his options. And then bared his fangs and frowned at the other Seishi, calling
his bluff. “I said go ‘way. You ain’t gonna drag me outta here, so leave
me alone.” With that, he resumed
staring at the wall, hoping that Nuriko would get the message and leave.
Nuriko raised an eyebrow and remarked, “Well, I guess you’re
serious. You really do want to be left
alone.”
“Damn straight,” said the bandit.
Nuriko then walked over, grabbed Tasuki by the ear, and
proceeded to drag him up to the main deck, kicking and screaming. “If you want to be left alone that bad, then
being alone is probably the last thing you need. Hey!!! Bite me again and
I’ll dump you overboard!”
Tasuki stopped fighting, refusing to try his luck with that
particular threat.
************************************************************************
Things were finally quiet aboard the ship, and Tamahome had
finally managed to talk himself into going to find Miaka. He didn’t want to do this, but it was the
only way. He needed to be with Tasuki
again; they’d only been together for one day, but it was the best day of his
life. He wanted that back.
Not to mention the fact that just thinking about Tasuki made
him hard as a rock. The strain of it
was making him so tense he was startling at his own shadow. He was even starting to imagine that he
could feel Tasuki’s presence; it was just crazy.
The only help for the whole situation was to confess to
Miaka and pray that she could find it in herself to understand, and move
on. Somehow, Tamahome didn’t think it
was going to be that simple, but he had to try.
He eventually found Miaka chatting at Chichiri in the ship’s
galley. Chichiri excused himself when he
saw Tamahome coming, giving the younger man an encouraging pat on the shoulder
on the way out.
Miaka beamed at him as he took a seat across the table from
her, happy to spend some time with him without some crisis going on. If she didn’t know better, she could have
sworn he was avoiding her. But it was
almost certainly because of Taiitsukun’s warning that they couldn’t be close to
protect her virginity for the summoning.
Thus reassured, she was completely unprepared for what
Tamahome said next.
************************************************************************
“I don’t… think we should be together anymore, Miaka.”
Miaka shoved back from the table and stared,
unbelieving. “What? This is a joke, right? Cut it out, it’s not funny!”
“It’s true, I’m not joking.”
“How can you say that?” Miaka demanded, clenching her fists
at her sides. “You love me. You even asked me to marry you. That can’t just change overnight!”
“It wasn’t overnight,” Tamahome replied. “We’ve been drifting apart ever since my family…”
he trailed off, unable to finish the thought.
“You must have known it, too.”
Miaka started to disagree, but stopped herself. She had felt them drifting
apart. When he had fought Suboshi,
Tamahome had frightened her badly. He
had never shown a capacity for violence or cruelty before; he had been sweet
and caring. But that had just been a
fluke; he had been back to normal the next day, hadn’t he?
“It’s not my fault we haven’t been close lately. You just shut me out! I thought you meant it when you said you
were all right.”
“I didn’t shut you out on purpose, but what else could I
do?” he countered, without any heat.
“You didn’t seem to have any idea what I was going through. There’s no way to explain what it feels like
to lose people you’ve worked hard trying to protect all your life. And then to see their killer get away…”
Miaka took an involuntary step back, shaken by the fury in
his eyes. Tamahome noticed it and tried
to calm himself. “That’s what I
mean. My baby sister died in my arms because
of Suboshi, and I want him dead. If I
get the chance, I will kill him for what he did, and I don’t care what it costs
me. And I don’t think there’s anything
wrong with that as long as I don’t endanger our mission. If we stayed together, I’d have to hide my
feelings to spare you, and it would be a lie.”
“But you said you loved me,” Miaka said quietly, turning
away from him to hide her tears.
Tamahome grit his teeth and steeled himself against her
sadness, reminding himself over and over again that this was the right thing
for all involved. “I do love
you,” Tamahome replied. “But not the
way I thought I did. It’s nothing at
all like what I feel for Tas–” Tamahome broke off, cringing and mentally
damning himself for his slip-up. He
hadn’t meant to tell her that part of it just yet. This was going to be bad.
Miaka whirled on him angrily.
“Tasuki? You’re
leaving me for Tasuki?! You have to be
joking, he’s… he’s… a guy! And I though
you two hated each other, the way you’re always fighting! He must have you confused or something;
that’s not what love really is!”
With a new focus for her confusion and hurt feelings, Miaka
turned and dashed out of the room, fuming and looking for someone to take it
out on. She ignored Tamahome’s yells
for her to stop.
She found Tasuki above deck with some of the others and
headed over.
************************************************************************
Tasuki, Chiriko, Nuriko and Mitsukake were sitting around a
large map of Hokkan as Chiriko ran down everything he knew about the country
for them. It wasn’t really the sort of
thing that interested Tasuki, but Nuriko had been right (damn him!), he needed
the distraction.
Chiriko trailed off as Miaka came stomping up the
group. “Tasuki!”
Tasuki cringed.
Tamahome must have talked to her.
He’d been dreading this moment.
‘Aw, hell,’ he thought, ‘here it comes.’
He turned around and smiled obliviously at her, hoping to at
least ward her off until Chiriko wasn’t around; the kid really didn’t need to
hear this. “Hey, Miaka-chan! Chiriko here’s just tryin’ to figure out
where the Shiz-na-what’s-it might be–”
“Just stop it; I know what you did! How could you take Tamahome away from me?”
Tasuki’s smile faded, and he looked away, refusing to look
her in the eye.
“There’s no way he’d just throw away everything we have just
like that. What’s really going on
here?”
Tasuki refused to say a word, making Miaka even
angrier. “Answer me, damn it! You’ve always hated him for beating you up
and you just don’t want him to be happy!”
Mitsukake watched the whole tableau unfold. He knew that Tasuki wasn’t defending himself
because he felt terrible about hurting the young priestess, but she was going
too far in saying things just to wound, and he had had enough. “Miaka, stop this! You don’t know what’s going on here–” he broke off as Tasuki
shook his head slightly.
“Just let her rail at me.
She’s got a right to be pissed,” he said low enough for Miaka to miss
it. “Just get Chiriko outta here before
she gets serious.”
It went against every instinct he had, but there was nothing
else he could do. He had to respect
Tasuki’s wishes, even if he didn’t agree.
Reluctantly, he steered the confused youngster down into the ship,
promising to explain it all later.
Meanwhile, Miaka continued her angry tirade. “It’s just because he and I can’t have sex,
isn’t it? He couldn’t be close to me,
so you were next in line!” Tasuki had
been ready to let her yell at him as long as she needed to, but that last jab
had hit too close to one of his insecurities.
Tamahome arrived just in time to hear that last barb, and
saw Tasuki stiffen. ‘Hell, he might
actually believe that crap!’ He had to
put a stop to this. “Miaka, that’s
enough! I know how badly this is
hurting you, but you’re being cruel for no reason! I want to be with him because we love each other.”
Miaka was silent for a moment. Then she spoke again, quietly and resolutely. “No.
You love me, you’re just confused right now. I can undo it with one of my wishes when we
get the Shinzaho, and things will go back to normal. Tamahome’s coming back to my world with me!” With that, she stalked off, leaving two
devastated warriors in her wake.

Agree with my characterization of an immature 15-year-old
girl getting dumped by her first love for another guy? Disagree?
Drop me a line; I’d love to know what ya’ll think!
Dang, it’s hard to refer to Nuriko as a he. I see him as a she, even after he
cuts his hair. Hmph.
