Hola! This is the
third part in what I’ve titled the Changing Fate series. Man, has this been a doozy! Started off as a one-shot, and ended up
being the longest piece of fiction I’ve ever written!
Things’ll be a bit different this time around. I’m going to assume everyone is familiar
with the events of the series. I’ll be
hitting the fast forward button, writing out what I think would be different
with Tama and Tas being together, and jumping over what I believe wouldn’t
change. Kinda make sense? I’ll do my very best to make it all flow
into a smooth story.
Oh, and if you haven’t read Comfort since I revised
it, go read it again. It’s better, I
promise. ^_~
Story notes:
::blah:: indicate direct bond-speak (mental speech
between Tama and Tas)
blah indicate shared abstract thought (like emotions,
dreams, or memories)
‘blah’ are thoughts.
And as always: Qi (Chinese, pinyin) = Chi (Chinese,
Wade-Giles) = Ki (Japanese)
The Legend Reborn
*******************************************************************************
It was official. Searching for the Shinzaho in Touran sucked
major donkey balls.
Tasuki and Tamahome were split up for the search, and he was
teamed with Mitsukake, who only answered questions in monosyllables and barely
responded to any attempts to get him to actually talk. He was cold, his muscles were stiff and uncomfortable, and on top
of all that, they’d been searching and questioning people for almost the entire
day, and hadn’t found any leads yet.
Not to mention the fact that they’d been on horseback most
of the day. His ass was royally sore,
and not in a good way.
It just got on his nerves.
Just when he was about to blow up and indulge himself in a good, long
tantrum, Mitsukake had the indecency to defuse him by finally opening up and
talking. “So what’s the bond like?”
“Chichiri told ya ‘bout that?”
Tasuki asked, a little surprised.
Mitsukake nodded.
“After I found you in the forest near the nomad’s village I was worried,
so I went to Chichiri. Nuriko had the
same idea after finding Tamahome in pretty much the same state. At that point, he told us what he knew.”
“Talk about a shitty day,” Tasuki said, almost to
himself. He had been running, just
trying to outrun his pain when his weakened body had just cut out on him. He hit the ground hard, and he hadn’t had
the strength or the will to get up again.
He lay there sobbing out of frustration and hurt for he didn’t know how
long before he felt arms lifting him off the ground. Tasuki was too far gone to care who it was. The arms around him were warm and familiar,
so he just leaned into whoever it was and cried until he couldn’t cry anymore.
When he had finally cried himself out, he was startled to
see that it was Mitsukake who held him.
He looked so… sad. The doctor
put his hand on Tasuki’s head, and hissed at the contact; the bandit knew he
had a fever, but didn’t know it was that bad.
Mitsukake’s eyes began to drift closed and Tasuki knew the doctor would
try to heal him. He jumped away before
he could begin.
“I’m fine. Save yer
energy,” he said quickly, mortified at being caught weeping like a child. “Ya never know, right? Ya might need it
later. Just… S-sorry,” he stammered before using what little strength he had
recovered to disappear from the scene.
Mitsukake never got a word out.
Coming back to the present, Tasuki smiled sheepishly. “Sorry I was such a damn basket case back
then. Guess I was kinda fallin’ apart.”
“There’s nothing to apologize for. I’m just glad things worked out when they did. If they hadn’t… well, let’s just say Nuriko
had an alternate plan.”
“Man, I don’t even wanna know,” Tasuki
shuddered. “It’s just embarassin’,” he
went on, scratching the back of his head uncomfortably. “Ya keep seein’ me at my flat out worst. I hate bein’ like that, let alone somebody
bein’ around ta see it.”
“I guess I’m just returning the favor.” At Tasuki’s confused look, he chuckled. “You must have forgotten what I was like
when you first found me. I do believe I
turned my back on you all after I screamed at you like a crazy person for half
an hour. Talk about a basket
case!” Tasuki laughed, and Mitsukake
was more than a little surprised that he was able to joke about this. Somehow, he had come to consider Tasuki a
close friend.
“This bond thing’s kinda hard ta explain. I don’t even get it all, but that’s
okay. It works better if I don’t think
about it too hard an’ just go with my gut.
Tama ain’t figured that out yet.
Anyway, it’s kinda like havin’ someone always sittin’ in the back of yer
head. Whether he’s payin’ attention or
not, he’s always there. I c’n always
feel him, an’ if I concentrate I c’n see what he’s seein’. It’s the same for Tama.”
“That doesn’t sound like you get a lot of privacy.”
Tasuki shrugged.
“Maybe so, but neither one a’ us misses it. Besides, we figured somethin’ out on the way here. Remember when we got inta a fist fight
outside ‘a the city?”
Mitsukake nodded. It
had been one hell of a brawl. Tasuki
had just started cackling seemingly out of nowhere, gasping out ‘obake-chan’
whenever he could get enough breath.
Tamahome had turned several shades of red before roaring at Tasuki and
tackling him off his horse and onto the ground. After that, all anyone could see was a flurry of kicks and
punches. Nuriko tried to break it up,
but he had gotten sucked into the melee as well.
“Well, we were playin’ around with the bond a little bit on
the way here. We took turns thinking of
a word or a number, and tried to snatch it out of each other’s heads. I got his every time, an’ he never got
mine. He got mad ‘cause I picked up on
somethin’ embarrassin’. I can keep him
outta my head if I wanna, but he can’t do the same. He could if he’d stop thinkin’ so much an’ just go with… the
flow…” he trailed off into a frown with a faraway look in his eyes. Without any direction, his horse meandered
to a halt.
“Tasuki?” Mitsukake asked,
concerned. He tugged his horse to a
stop.
“Oh, fuck. Fuck!” The bandit jumped off his horse and pulled
himself up in front of Mitsukake as the doctor looked on in shock. “Go north as fast as ya can. There’s a Genbu monument there; ask around
fer it if ya can’t find it. Miaka an’
Nuriko’re there, and that’s where Tama’ll go when this is all done. If anythin’ happens ta me, don’t worry. Just don’t let me fall.”
Mitsukake took off leaving Tasuki’s horse to follow on its
own before asking, “What’s going on?”
“Suboshi,” he spat. “The little shit’s tryin’ ta take on Tama.”
*******************************************************************************
Tamahome jumped away from Yui as a meteor bell came flying
at his head. “Suboshi,” he snarled as
the ‘oni’ mark on his forehead flared.
He felt Tasuki touch his mind and he remembered that he wasn’t alone in
this.
Suboshi felt a shiver of fear at the menacing tone of Tamahome’s
voice, but was unwilling to acknowledge it, especially in front of his beloved
Priestess. As much as he didn’t want to
admit it, Soi’s interference was the only thing that saved him the last time
they fought.
“What’s the matter Tamahome?”
Suboshi scoffed. You should be grateful
to me. At least I left your family for
you to find. I’ll never be able to bury
my brother!”
Tamahome’s gray eyes darkened to a dull, angry purple. “I told you once before. I didn’t kill Amiboshi. But I’m damn sure gonna kill you.”
He addressed Yui one more time without breaking eye contact
with Suboshi. “Yui, you’re supporting
people who have no trouble slaughtering innocent children, including a five
year old girl in cold blood. I don’t
know if I’ll ever be able to forgive you for that.”
The horrified girl gasped and backed away from
Tamahome. She had wanted his attention,
but not like this. Tears began to fall
from her eyes at Tamahome’s words.
“How dare you talk to Yui-sama that way!” Infuriated at seeing her cry, the younger
boy immediately launched his meteor bells in the most devastating attack he
could manage. Tamahome threw his arms
up to protect his head, and he was driven to his knees by the force of the
assault. The bells slashed at him,
cutting his clothes to ribbons in some places and slicing into his skin. Smirking, Suboshi called the bells back to
himself. ‘Too easy,’ he thought. However, his arrogance was short lived.
“That all you got, you little punk?” Tamahome sneered,
rising to his feet again. “I guess
you’re only effective against small children and gentle old men!”
‘My strongest attack had no effect?’ Suboshi was too shocked to defend
himself. Tamahome took advantage and
launched himself at Suboshi, punching him in the face hard enough to send him
flying into a wall.
Suboshi managed to pick himself up, groaning. He looked at Yui’s shocked face, realizing
that if they continued fighting she might be harmed. He decided to do the only thing he could: he ran, leading
Tamahome away from her. “Get back to
Nakago! Hurry!” he yelled. He had to keep her safe.
“You’re going to have to answer for what you did,
Suboshi!” Tamahome yelled angrily,
taking off after him.
The boy was fast, faster than Amiboshi had been. Tamahome couldn’t keep up. His mind screamed out.
::He’s getting away again!::
::Oh no he ain’t.::
Tasuki’s power and strength flooded him, calming the panic
and allowing him to focus again. With
Tasuki’s speed, he overtook the younger twin, sliding to a stop in front of him. For the first time since it happened,
Tamahome allowed himself to relive that nightmare of a day when he found his
family slain. He let all the grief, all
the rage, all the pain build up inside him, unintentionally pulling Tasuki into
the maelstrom as well. He channeled all
of that terrible energy into his fist until it glowed a furious red with the
power. He let it fly.
Suboshi didn’t stand a chance. Unable to stop in time, he ran headlong into his own death. Tamahome’s blow tore straight through his
chest. With his last breath, he bid
goodbye to the only living person that meant anything to him. “Yui-sama…”
In a far away village, a farmer’s adopted son fell to his
knees in the middle of a field and wept.
Tamahome pulled his fist back, dropping Suboshi’s body to
the ground. He stared at his bloody
hand in shock. It was over, just like
that. He had expected to feel like a monster
for committing this act, or somehow tainted.
But he didn’t feel that way at all.
He felt… relieved. His family
was avenged; pursuing Suboshi no longer had to occupy his every waking
moment. He could finally let it go and
just be a Suzaku seishi again. It was
over, and he was in Tasuki’s debt, yet again.
::Thank you, Tas.::
There was no answer to that, only empty silence in his mind
where there should have been a fiery spark.
Panicking, Tamahome took off at a dead run back to the Genbu
monument. He knew that Mitsukake was on
his way and that he’d look there first.
::Tasuki, answer me!::
Nothing.

Uh-oh, what happened to
Tasuki??? Stay tuned. ^_^
Don’t worry, chapters get longer after this one. I just had to give ya a little taste to
start you off. ^_~
