Chapter 1 - Hell Hath No Fury...
I could tell from the first time that I saw him - his head bent low and his back hunched over. His hands were pushed into his pockets and every step that he took seemed as though he had no destination, he had no cares. I could just tell...
...This man was a force to be reckoned with.
His hair was long and hung low around his face, casting shadows over everything but his mouth.
His mouth. You could always see what he was thinking by the expression that played on his lips. At the moment they were straight and to the point. No bullshit was the expression that I saw. I couldn't help sweeping my eyes over their plumpness and the light sheen that covered them.
...Perhaps I could have fun with this one.
________________________________
Faye Valentine's my name. And if you know me, you know to stay out of my way. That's what the smart ones do anyways. You may think at first glance that I'm just another delicate flower whose only hope in life is to meet Mr. Charming and be swept off of her feet. Well I ain't that girl. Don't you be mistaken.
I won't hesitate to take a man double my size down in a heart beat. And I can do it too. A swift kick to the face or a break of the wrist, I'll have him on his knees, exactly where a man should be. I'm the best, and no one can get in my way.
That's why I'm currently working for Bebop Inc., a bounty hunter agency. No, not working for...it's more like a daily grind. I don't like to think that I'm doing anything for anybody but myself. And that's exactly what I'm doing at Bebop. It pays the rent and more.
I live a pretty good life. I rent out a studio downtown. The area's not so great but nothing that I can't handle. I live their with my dog Ein. I found the mutt digging through my garbage one night and since then I couldn't seem to get rid of him. I'd really rather be alone - but the little pest sorta adopted me.
Other than Ein, I have little to no friends. Nothing ever good happened to me when I trusted others. I've been in some pretty dumb situations in the past where people have taken advantage of me...but I'm not so naive anymore.
Both my parents are dead - shot to death inside our home. They never found the guy who did it. I was 13 and my baby sister was 3, tough ages to be left all alone. That was 10 years ago, and I'd like to think that it played a pretty big part on how I ended up. It made me strong.
Today I get a phone call from the office telling me to get my ass down there because they got a new case for me. Now normally I'd just tell them to fuck off - Sundays were my only days off and no way they could get me to give it up. But this case, this was a special one.
Vicious, the badest of the bad. He's charged with over 15 deaths and known to be associated with at least 5 others. He's the leader of some new gang and felt that he had to prove himself by killing off a bunch of Red Dragon Crime syndicate leaders. He's got loads supporters, and I'm talkin some of the toughest guys out there. After many failed attempts to bring this guy down they finally decide to call me in - the best. Good thing 'cause I haven't kick major ass in some time and I was beginning to feel antsy.
So after I hung up with my boss I clicked off my phone and made my way over to the shower. If I don't start my day off with a shower then my day is guaranteed to be trash. What, you thought that I was just some hardcore lesbo with a shaved head and tattoos covering my body? No, I'd like to think that I have a feminine side.
My hair is cut short around my shoulders and is in impeccable shape, if I may say so myself. I have no need for makeup, no one to impress so why waste my time? I don't need it anyways. My lips take on a natural red tint and my cheeks are always rosy. I've got a voluptuous body (so I'm told) and my eyes are a dark sultry brown that make you think I'm staring right into your soul - and maybe I am. There's no way you can be sure, is there?
You can say that I'm conceited, and I don't really care. I say that I'm blunt, to the point. I know what men like and I've got the goods. Unfortunately for them I can kick most of their asses and men tend to see that as a major turn-off. Men like to play the knight in shining armer part and I can promise you that I'll never play the helpless maiden. I'd be up there pushing the knight off of his stead and out of my way and slaying the damn dragon myself.
After my shower I wrapped a towel around myself and walked to my closet and grabbed the closest thing to me - a pair of boot-cut denim jeans and a yellow tank top with a plunging neck line. Most would think that this was an inappropriate outfit for work, but I don't really care. It's comfortable and I look damn sexy in it. If they have a problem with it then they can fire me and I'll move on to the next place. Their loss.
I let Ein outside to do his business and downed a cup of coffee before pouring up another one. I'm a woman who likes my caffeine. If you think that I'm a bitch now, try talkin to me on a day I haven't had my coffee. You'd be dead before you hit the floor.
A glance at my clock tells me that it's 7 in the morning, and for once I don't feel so tired. It had to be due to my new case. Lordy was I excited. Nothing made me feel better then taking down a piece of scum that thinks he's the best thing in the world.
And maybe he is the best...but not after he gets my number 7 boot up his ass. Pay day was a'comin.
"Ein, get your ass back in here, I gotta go!" I yelled at the stupid mutt, who was currently digging through my neighbor's trash. He looked at me for a moment and then back down at the trash, trying to decide which one was better. I shot him a death glare and crossed my arms and he bowed his head and made his way inside.
Two more cups of coffee and I was ready to go. I tucked my wallet into my back pocket and threw my badge over my neck. I strapped my baby into the gun holder on my waist - the Glock 30 has always been my greatest companion. I grabbed the case of .45 ACP ammunition that sat on my counter top before walking out into the cold. Damn, I should have brought a sweater. I climbed into my fire red porsche cayman and started the engine, closing my eyes as I listened to my baby purr. Gods this car fitted me to the T.
It was a quick drive to work, not many people were out this early on a Sunday and the traffic I often found myself sitting in was nonexistent. I pulled up to the Bebop building around 7:45 and parked my car in the garage. I was glad to see that the normally packed elevator was empty, free of the hormonic females sending me death glares and the sadly mistaken men checking me out. I stepped out when I reached my floor and saw that Alisa, the receptionist was working. In my 11 months at Bepop, there was never a time where she wasn't at work. Never taking a sick day or vacation. She's one of the few good ones here.
"What's up, Alisa?" I asked as I walked over to her.
She sighed and shook her head, her fingers not pausing as she clicked away on her keyboard. "Just another day in paradise," she said. She never looked happy at work, but I knew that she loved it. She has this thing for my boss and every time he walks by she goes all goo-goo eyed. It's pretty disgusting.
"Where's the boss?" I asked her, leaning heavily against her desk. Her fingers stopped moving for a second and she stared up at me with a smile.
"Oh, he's in his office. He's expecting you. He's all excited about this new case that just came in." She talks about him as if they were married. "You should see the tie he's wearing."
I raised an eyebrow, "He's wearing a tie?" He never wore ties.
"Yup," she smiled, staring off into space. She focused on me again and leaned in closer, her expression serious. "There's some new guy he called in to meet with him this morning. I think it has to do with the Vicious case."
"What!?" Oh hell no, this is my case! I pushed myself up off of Alisa's desk and stomped across the room to his door. I didn't knock before I swung the door open and made my way over to his desk were he sat.
He had a slight smile on his face as if he was expecting me to come charging into his office, and that made me even more angry. His arms were crossed behind his head and he motioned for me to sit down, but I ignored him as I slammed my hands onto his desk and leaned in close to his face.
"What the fuck, Jet!?" I yelled. "This is my case. Who's this guy you're calling in?" My face was red with anger and I could feel the tiny vain in my neck pulsing. He simply leaned further back in his chair and once again motioned for me to sit down. I glared at him for a moment longer before grabbing the cigarets and lighter from his desk and stomping over to the leather chair behind me and flopping down in it. I crossed my legs and grabbed a smoke between two long fingers. I lit the end and inhaled long and deep, savoring the nicotine on my tongue. I hadn't had a cigaret in 2 weeks, trying to quit and all. And oh lord did it feel good.
Jet scooted toward his desk and crossed his arms in front of him. He had lost his left arm years back from a cause I still don't know, but a prosthetic one now sat in its place. It made little difference. Yes he's cripple, but he can still kick your ass.
"So you heard the news?" he asked, a slight smile on his lips causing the long scar over the right side of his face to crumple. I didn't answer, just took a long drag of my cigaret and stared at him. Jet sighed and rubbed a hand over his bald head. "This is a big case, Faye. I don't doubt your ability, but we need outside help with this one. This guy knows all about the Red Dragon crime syndicate and he's brought down a good chunk of them. He's got skills that match your own, babe." I snorted and raised an eyebrow at him. I highly doubted that. "He's a free lancer. Takes in cases over the "Big Shots" network and then collects the rewards. We called him in because we need his knowledge for this case. With the two of you working together, I wouldn't doubt that we'll have this guy in less than a week.
"I work alone, Jet. I don't need some high maintenance bounty boy tagging along."
"This case is different, and you know it." Jet said, staring at me. I stared back at him and we sat in silence for a few moments before a knock at the door drew Jet's attention. I finished my cigaret and grabbed another before placing it between my lips and searching for the lighter.
"Come in," Jet called. Alisa peaked her head inside of the door and I noticed that she was slightly more flustered than normal.
She cleared her throat and said, "Mr. Spiegel is here to see you." Jet smiled and nodded his head.
"Ah, good. Send him in." he said. I found the lighter and lifted it up to my cigaret but paused as a man walked passed Alisa and into the office.
He was tall, at least a foot taller than myself. He had a thin frame but I could tell that he had muscles under his dark blue jacket. A loose fitting black tie hung around his neck and he wore tight fitting black jeans and plain black boots on his feet. His hands were tucked into his pockets and his head was bent low, making it difficult for me to see his face. I could see his strong pointed chin and his mouth, which was clenched tightly together and serious. His hair was slightly long and hung around his face. It was dark, with almost a blue tint to it. I watched him out of the corner of my eye as he made his way over to Jet's desk and stopped, not even glancing in my direction.
Jet stood and stuck out his hand. "Mr. Spiegel, I'm Jet Black." he said. The man just stared ahead, leaving Jet's hand to drop back down to his side.
"The name's Spike." His voice was deep and masculine and dripping with an heir I couldn't quite place my finger on. Was it confidence? Or was it just something else? Jet just smiled at him and motioned for him to take a seat in the chair that sat next to mine. Spike glanced in my direction and for the first time I got a good look at his face.
He was handsome. His face was strong but also held a softness to it that I felt he was holding back. His eyes were striking. They were a reddish-brown color and one I noticed to be slightly lighter than the other. They were hard as stone as he stared into my own. His chin raised slightly in my direction, as if to acknowledge me and I nodded back as I lit my cigaret and inhaled. I blew the smoke in his direction and he grinned at me. It was odd, the feeling that arose in my stomach as he took a moment to size me up. His eyes burned into my body and for once, I wasn't sure what to say. He turned to face Jet once more.
"So you need my help to take down some big shot." It wasn't a question, it was a fact. "What's in it for me?" Jet glanced in my direction and I tilted my chin, waiting for his answer. He turned back to Spike.
"4,000."
"4,000 dollars for this chump to tag along on my mission!?" I stood up and slammed my hands against his desk once more. "Fucking ridiculous, Jet! I told you that I can do this on my own!" Spike's mouth turned up into a smile and I felt a shiver run up my back despite my anger.
"You think you can take him down alone, then be my guest," Spike said to me. "You'll be dead before the end of this week." I turned and pointed a finger into his chest.
"I can take him down with my hands tied behind my back," I growled at him. "I don't need you." Spike threw his hands up in mock defeat and shrugged his shoulders before turning and making his way toward the door. Jet stood from his desk.
"Spike, wait up," he called. Spike stopped but kept his back turned to us. "4,000, that's double the reward you'd get from taking a job on Big Shots. Take our offer." Spike stood still for a moment before nodding his head and then leaving the office. Jet sighed and plopped back down in his seat and I felt steam rushing from my ears.
"I can do this alone!" I shouted again, feeling more and more like a child throwing a temper tantrum. Jet shook his head at me.
"Listen, Faye. We all know that your good. Your the best we've got in fact. But Spike's our man in this case and you can either suck it up and join him or back off." He was getting pissed, I could tell, and I felt beyond furious but also slightly defeated. I put my cigaret out on Jet's desk and shouted.
"FINE! But you fucking owe me one." Jet laughed and shook his head.
"I don't owe you nothin, doll."
I stared at him for a moment longer before turning and stomping out of the door. I reached my office in less than a minute and slammed the door shut before sitting down in my seat and pulling out another cigaret. God dammit this day wasn't going like I thought it would. For the first time in a long time I felt like a situation was completely out of my control. I was of course curious about this Spike character but not at all happy about the idea of working with him. I could tell that he too wasn't pleased - he seemed to prefer to work alone as well. Perhaps if I'm lucky, he'll back off last minute and let me do this thing on my own.
I took another long drag of my cigaret and sighed.
...So much for me quitting smoking.

Ok, guys. This is all new to me, and I hope that you'll give me a bit of a break. Not only is this my first Bebop fan fiction, It's my first story in first person (POV-Faye). I typically don't like stories in first person but I just started writing and my brain took over. I love the show, but haven't seen a great number of episodes, so I'm sorry if I depict a character incorrectly, or if the story seems a little off. I do understand that Faye is normally the lazy one, but she's taking control in my story! Yeee-haw!
I do have to be honest in that I'm kinda writing as I go along, and haven't quite worked out some important details. I know that it's set in present time on earth.
Other than that, I hope that you enjoyed. Let me know what you think, because I'm pretty nervous about it!
Thanks, pals!
