“Ryuuzaki?”

A small sound of assent followed, promising the teenager that he had been heard.

“You are highly intelligent, and I do hate to question it, but what do you think you’re doing?”

“We, Raito~kun.”

“Very well, then. What do you think we are doing?”

“Is it not obvious, Yagami~kun? It is indeed Halloween.”

“So what you’re saying is… we’re going trick-or-treating?”

“Correct.”

Raito sighed, grabbing the detective’s shoulder and forcing the older man to face him, “Don’t you think we’re a bit too old to go trick-or-treating?!”

Not showing his slight annoyance at being halted in his task, L eyed Raito calmly, “One is never too old for trick-or-treating. With the exception of where the law states that those over the age of thirteen must refrain from such activities.”

“And I suppose that is not the case around here.”

“No, actually, but we are not going to trick-or-treat here.”

“What’s wrong with going around New York City while we’re here?”

“I have compiled a list of every place in the entire United States that has no law of age and then contacted many children in each place to discover which has the best ‘haul’ as they put it.”

“You talked to kids to find out where you could get the most candy?” Raito blinked at the strange man.

“Indeed.”

“You are completely insane!!! What is wrong with you, Ryuuzaki?! I am not going trick-or-treating like some little brat! It’s an American custom that I have no desire to experience! You have to look completely ridiculous and knock on complete strangers doors begging for sweets! THERE IS NO WAY!!!”

“Clearly you are upset, Raito~kun, but please try to understand it from my perspective. The trick-or-treating is something I have always desired to participate in. This may be my only trip to America, and I may never be given another chance. Please allow me to do this,” L’s eyes were as wide as ever, pleading passively.

“I never said I was going to stop you. There’s just no way in Hell I’m going to join you.”

“Please, Raito~kun? As you often remind me, I am not skilled at dealing with people. I do not believe I can do this without you.”

“Ryuuzaki!” he started sternly.

The older man stuck out his lip just the tiniest bit, giving him the appearance of a forlorn puppy.

“Ryuuzaki…” he tried again, less forcefully.

The other hunched his shoulders more than usual, and whispered, “Please, Raito~kun?”

“Ryuu-- Fine,” Raito huffed.

“I am extremely grateful,” but he was already turning around, shuffling deftly towards his previous destination.

The Yagami boy miserably trailed behind his captor. “So what are we gonna dress up as: a convict and his detective?” he rolled his eyes.

“Was that a confession?” L stopped short, turning excitedly to Raito.

“No, it was a prediction of what you would force me to be.”

A slight pout crossed Ryuuzaki’s features, but he remained as stoic as ever, returning to his travels, “How unfortunate. I had rather hoped that New York City would be enough to compel you to confess. Though I had supposed it would be the crime rate that forced Kira past his limits. How could the equitable god Kira possibly stand by and watch all the depravity of New York City without whipping out a Death Note and enacting some of his ‘justice’?”

Raito huffed softly, “How many times must I remind you that I am not Kira?”

“If you were, I do believe that you began killing so many criminals in New York just so that we would have to fly the long distance to search for a possible third Kira. Of course you would have realized the others would be forced to stay behind to keep an eye on the other Kiras that, if not you and Ms. Amane, are most definitely located in Japan.”

“Oh, yes. Surely I planned this smog-filled vacation to get some time alone with you… though, and do not take this as a compliment, it is nice to have an entirely intelligent conversation with you without the others ruining it with poorly thought out inferences.”

“Your company is also enjoyable, Raito~kun, as we are on nearly the same level of intelligence.”

“This would be even more fun,” the teenager lifted his cuffed hand, “if I didn’t have to walk around New York looking like some damn criminal.”

“Yagami~kun is angry at appearing similar to a criminal, because he detests them so deeply? 19%.”

“Shut up. Keep your percentages to yourself, if they involve me being Kira.”

“As you wish, Raito~kun.”

Not missing a step, the Yagami boy glared over his shoulder at a hysterical Ryuk. He had begged the shinigami to stay with Misa, but the death god insisted that it was no fun with that stuffy Rem about. He then carried on to complain that it was completely unfair that Rem could be seen by the entire task force, but he was forced to be kept a secret. Raito had reminded him that there would be no use of a Death Note, nor would he dare to bring it with him. Also the teen refused to have apples floating about in the presence of L. Neither had bothered Ryuk in the slightest, he thought this vacation could be interesting.

“Shinigami,” Ryuuzaki said suddenly.

“What?” Raito managed to hide the tremor in his voice; had the detective seen something that suggested the presence of a death god?

“You asked earlier what we were going to dress up as for Halloween.”

“Oh.” Ignoring the sigh of relief that threatened to burst from him, he continued, “Where are we possibly going to find shinigami costumes in time to fly to wherever in America you have decided to go trick-or-treating?”

“Raito~kun, I am disappointed. Is it not obvious I commissioned such costumes from Watari the instant I found out about this excursion?”

“Ryuuzaki, I may be walking around with you all evening, but I am definitely not dressing up as a death god!”

“You already agreed to my conditions, Yagami~kun. You should have been more specific as to your exceptions. Unfortunately, it is too late for that, and you are now bound by your word to do as I wish this evening, at least in the case that it has something to do with Halloween,” the older man stated plainly.

“You’re such a cheater, I hope you know.”

“I do not cheat, others merely do not remember to look at every individual outcome of a situation.”

“You’re a cheater,” Raito repeated.

“If you say it is so, then it must be true.”

“Thank you.”

“I hope you do not expect a ‘you’re welcome’, because you most certainly are not. I was merely agreeing that Raito Yagami’s level of intellect suggests that he is correct in most of his assumptions, for he often grounds them with reason.”

“If you’ll shut up, I’ll be a shinigami.”

“Wonderful.”

“But you’re gonna be Rem.”
