“But Mamo-chan, you promised we would always be together.” Tears wandered down the pretty blonde girl’s face as she sat by her lover’s bedside.
“And we will, in your memories of me, Usa-ko.” He raised a weary hand to her face, brushing the sparkling drops from her cheeks.
“But I’ve seen you in the future. What about Chibi-Usa? What will happen to her?”
“Perhaps that future is no longer meant to be. I know it’s cruel to have seen so beautiful a destiny and then to have it taken away. I don’t know what will happen to Chibi-Usa, but I have faith that whatever future lies ahead for you now will be just as wonderful as the one we were expecting together.”
“No, Mamo-chan, I don’t want a future without you.” She threw herself onto his bed beside him. “Don’t leave me here all alone, Mamo-chan.”
“You won’t be alone, Usa-ko. Your friends are here, and they love you too. You must be strong for them, my love.” He cradled her in his arms, the effort slowly draining his remaining energy.
“Mamo-chan, Mamo-chan, why does it have to be like this? Please don’t leave me. Don’t leave me Mamo-chan.” Usagi was sobbing into his chest, soaking his shirt with tears.
“I love you, Usa-ko.” Mamoru whispered to her. “Promise me; promise me that you’ll be happy.”
“No.” She whimpered. “I can’t Mamo-chan.” He lifted her chin and stared into her tear-filled blue eyes.
“Usa-ko, for my sake, be happy.”
She couldn’t speak, so she nodded and buried her face in his chest. He smiled and kissed her forehead tenderly sinking back onto his pillow and closing his eyes. She lay there a few moments, letting her tears dry before she lifted her gaze to his face once more.
“Mamo-chan? Mamo-chan!” Without opening his eyes he whispered to her once more.
“Remember, you promised, Usa-ko.” Tears began streaking down her still wet cheeks once more. Her heart felt as if it was crumbling into tiny pieces inside of her.
“I love you, Mamo-chan. I love you.” As she kissed him, she felt him fading away from her.
The seven women gathered in the next room listened to Usagi’s loud sobbing wondering if they should go in to her. Minako stood, but Rei held her back, shaking her head, sadly. They were at a loss as they looked at each other. None of them knew exactly what to do. Their princess was in pain, and they had no way of protecting her from it. Frustrated, Haruka slammed her mug onto the coffee table, nearly shattering it with the impact, and strode out the front door. Quietly, Michiru followed to comfort her lover. When Usagi’s sobs had lost their violence, Makoto stood and went into the bedroom.
Usagi was draped across Mamoru’s body, embracing his neck tightly. Makoto went to the bed and gingerly pressed her fingers to the man’s wrist. It was done. The protector of the Earth was dead, killed not in a great battle, but by a simple human illness. She placed her hand on her friend’s shoulder and asked if she should stay. Usagi shook her head, and Makoto slowly backed out of the room.
The remaining scouts looked up at her as she reentered the room, their eyes full of questions. Makoto sighed and nodded once. Ami tried to comfort Minako’s sobs, tears streaming down her own face. Hotaru hid against Makoto’s shoulder. Rei was the only girl in the room not crying. Instead, she was angry. How dare he just die like that? What was Usagi supposed to do now? As was her way, Rei’s anger quickly burned itself out and she was left, feeling hollow inside, crying with the rest of them.
When Haruka and Michiru returned, it only took them a moment to realize what had happened. Without speaking, Haruka went into the bedroom, and sitting in the bedside chair, she drew Usagi up in her arms.
“No, no, let me stay with him. Let me stay with Mamo-chan.”
“He’s gone, kitten.” Usagi buried her face in her friend’s shoulder and whimpered, softly crying until she exhausted herself and fell asleep.
