Chapter 1
Sweating from having been chopping wood for most of the morning an older teen whipped the sweat from his forehead and away from his light brown hair as he put the ax down. It had taken a good portion of the morning but he had finally finished chopping the wood. Unfortunately he still had to finish stacking the blocks. Taking an arm full at a time, he carried it over to the pile of stacked fire wood blocks by the back door of his master’s home, and carefully added them to the stack.
As he worked a large golden ape digimon come out of the large three story stone house. In her arms she held two large wicker baskets. Setting the baskets down she leaned against the building while she waited for the boy to finish and then approached him. “Ryan, you’re done with your chores out here right?”
“Yes, Ma’am.” The teen said turning to face her. Noticing the baskets he hoped she didn’t have more work for him. If she did he had to do it though. She was the head cook and he been told to follow her and the steward Mikemon’s orders just as if they’d come from his master Grapleomon. In fact most of his orders come for one of the two digimon and not directly from Grapleomon.
“Good, then get cleaned up a bit and come with me to the market. With our Lord Mystimon coming I need to make sure the pantries are full.” She said reaching into a basket for the wash cloth she’d brought with her.
“I have other chores in the hou…”
“You can do them once we’re done at the market.” She said interrupting him, pressing the cloth into his hands. “Hurry and get cleaned up a little.” With no choice but to take it and do as he told him, he took the cloth and walked over to the water pump.
Pulling of his off light tan sleeveless shirt, he set it aside then pumped a little water on the cloth. Twisting the cloth around in his hand he wrung it out a bit then washed the sweat off his face, upper body and around the leather collar he wore around his neck. Once he was done he pulled his shirt back on and dropped the cloth by the back door. As he returned he picked up the second wicker basket Apemon had brought out with her.
He really hoped they wouldn’t take too long at the market. He didn’t want to be late finishing his work and miss out on dinner tonight. He knew that Kat would likely try and save him some but still he didn’t want to be late or miss it all together.
It didn’t take the two long to travel down the tree lined, cobblestone road from the manor to the small town Ryan’s master looked over. If he hadn’t been worried about getting all his work done on time he’d have likely enjoyed the walk. It was late spring and the weather was perfect.
Keeping close to Apemon he looked around the town. Like Grapleomon’s Manor, most of the tightly packed buildings in the town were made of stone and had tiled roofs. As they entered the town square where the market was taking place, Ryan looked over at the public well in the center. Standing next to it were two tall men. The first looked to be only a few years older than him. His skin was well tanned and black hair that was cut short. He was wearing a light green shirt and brown pants. The other man was old, mostly bald save for a few grey wisps’ here and there and his skin was age marked and wrinkly. He was dressed in similar attire to the younger man, but had a darker gay shirt. As the older man was speaking quite loudly, he and most of the others in the square couldn’t help but hear what he was saying.
“… don’t belong here. I don’t believe it when they say they can’t go back to where ever they came from. If they could open portals from their world to ours, why can’t they reopen them and go back, hmm? I think it’s nothing but a lot of hogwash that it could destroy our world. Sure the portals caused massive quakes and eruptions when they appeared when I was a boy, but I just think they don’t want to…”
“I know, I know. Let’s not talk about it here thou…
“And why not? We should be free to say what we want and not fear them monsters not liking it.” The old man said eying a passing Hawkmon. “They claim to be helping us but they’ve only taking over. More than half the technology we had when I was a boy is gone now. They claim it’s to help the planet heal, but I think they just don’t want us making something to…
“Grandpa, please don’t talk like that. I don’t want you getting into any trouble.” The younger man, his grandson pleaded. He looked around a bit nervous as if he expected someone was heading their way.
“All right, fine…” The old man grumbled, looking like he still wanted to keep going. He clamped his mouth shut though and allowed his relieved grandson to lead him out of the square.
Following them with his eyes, Ryan was glad the old man had left. He didn’t want to see him told off or worse for speaking like that. Too often lately those that spoke out where locked up till they could keep their opinions to themselves. Glancing at Apemon’s back he wondered if she’d been annoyed or angered by the old man. She didn’t seem to be but he couldn’t tell a lot from just looking at her back.
’Would things be better if the digimon left, or would that only make things worse?’ He couldn’t help but wonder as the old man’s words ran through his mind. It was well before his time or even his partents, but he’d heard tales of what had happened when the portals had first open. How people thought it was the end of the world because of worldwide quakes and volcanic activity. He didn’t know if it was true but he’d heard only a fraction of the world’s population had survived the initial disaster and months of chaos the followed. If they left, would opening portals back to their world really cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions again?
Fingering the collar around his neck he considered something else the old man had said. It was true that digimon had destroyed and forbidden the making of a ton of things humans had made before they’d had come to earth. Had they done it so humans wouldn’t have the power to fight them off and not to prevent any more damage to the planet like the digimon claimed?
He didn’t know. He could see why there were those that thought so though. Most of the planet was now ruled over by digimon Lords, like Mystimon. For good or ill their word was law. The handful of places where humans were ‘free’ only had their freedom as their neighboring territories chose to let them be as long as they didn’t cause trouble.
’I didn’t come to the market with Apemon to worry about whether or not digimon had planned on taking over earth from the start. ‘ He thought shaking his head as he hurried to catch up to Apemon before she noticed he fallen behind a little. Hoping to get what the old man had out of his mind he glanced around the market.
Like it usually was the place was fairly busy. Humans and digimon alike walked from vendor to vendor looking at the various items being sold. Some of the vendors had stalls they sold their items from, while others just had a blanket and some upturned crates to show off their wares. And the vendors had a good selection of things for the buyers to look at. They had various fruits, vegetables, nuts and berries. A few even had animals they were trying to sale.
Standing next to Apemon as she looked through some veggies from Aruraumon’s produce stand, Ryan watched a little dark hair boy and his mother. The boy was holding a sack of potatoes while his mother haggled over the price of dried apples with a Bearmon. As he watch a couple potatoes fell out of the sack and as the boy tired to pick them up without setting the bag down even more fell out. Noticing his mothers sighed and bent down to pick them up.
As Apemon filled the basket he was holding with carrots and a some other veggies and fruit she bought form the purple flowered plant digimon and a few other venders, it started to get heavy. He didn’t complain thought. He was used to carrying heavy loads.
Deciding that she’d gotten enough vegetables and fruits, Apemon headed over to where some chickens where being sold by a gruff looking older guy. As Apemon and the guy bartered over prices, Ryan looked past the stall at a small stand set up for the sale of slaves. No one was being sold today and it was smaller than the stage at the large market he’d been sold at, but it still brought back memories.

Scared and wishing more than anything he was home with his family the fourteen year old boy huddled, hugging his knee’s to his chest, in the back of the large cell he been pushed into earlier in the day. He wasn’t the only one in here, there were five others in the cell as well, but the others didn’t seem to care about a scared kid. They had their own worries to deal with. As the door opened he peered towards it fearing one of the men that had taken him here was returning for him.
It wasn’t them; instead a plump but worn looking middle aged blond woman in a brown and green dress was pushed inside. Dropping his head back to his knees he returned to wanting to go home. A few minutes later he was drawn from his thoughts of home when the lady sat down near him.
“Are you alone here?” She asked in a kind voice.
Looking over his knee’s at her he nodded slowly and whispered, “Yes…”
She seemed sadden by his answer. She watched him for a moment with sad eyes. “I’m Moira.”
At first it didn’t seem like the light brown haired boy was going to respond to her, but after a minute or so she heard him whisper, “I’m Ryan…”
“That’s a good name.” She told him smiling. “Did you know it means little king?”
Letting go of his legs sat up a little and shook his head. “Does it really?”
“It does. My gran told me and my sister a lot of things like that when I was growing up. Wanted to make sure it was remembered. I’m glad I listened to what she said now.”
“Me too.” Ryan said giving her weak smile.
Hearing someone opening the door again, the two looked over as two men entered the cell. They weren’t the ones that had taken him here, but they reminded Ryan of them. They looked different, but had the same fell to them. They walked over to one of the men that had been here when he’d arrived and grabbed his arm to haul him to his feet and pulled him towards the door.
“I want to go home…” He said in a low voice as he hugged his legs again and looked away.
Not sure what to say Moira just watched him for a bit. She didn’t want to lie and say everything would turn out ok. After thinking for a while she decided to ask how he’d come to be here. “How’d you end up here? Where are you from?”
When he didn’t respond she sighed lightly and hoped she’d not made him clam up. Thinking she should let him before a bit she looked towards the door as there wasn’t much else to do in here. After a while Ryan whispered something. Looking at him she urged him to say it again, “Could you repeat that please? I didn’t quiet catch it.”
“Two men I don’t know took me here.” He said a little louder. “I don’t even know their names. They just referred to each other as scavengers.”
“Scavengers?”
Ryan nodded slowly. “We lived in a small town on the border of Crescemon’s land. My dad was a carpenter…” Looking away he seemed angry. “There was nothing of value in our town so I don’t understand why it happened.”
Nodding Moira laid a hand on his shoulder and waited for him to go on.
“Someone attacked our town. They came sometime in the afternoon I think. I was in the woods looking for good trees for my dad when it happened. When I got back later I found the town burning. I ran home as fast as I could, but our house was on fire too.” Going quiet he remembered how he’d called out for his parents but got no response.
“Later after the flames had died down, I looked all over the town to see if I could find anyone, but no one was there, I didn’t even find any bodies. I didn’t know if everyone had run off and would be back later or not, so I stayed in town waiting. The two ‘scavengers’ showed up the next day. They asked me what happened and so I told them. They told me they thought they knew were my family was and could take me there if I wanted. I was desperate and so stupidly went with them…”
Angry at his own stupidity he clenched his hands. “By the time I realized something was up it was too late. I tried to leave but they stopped me and keep me tied up till we got here.” Falling quiet again he looked at the ground. He was angry at them and himself, but also scared. While the other here had mostly ignored him, he’d still hear some of what they said and had a good idea of where he was. In a slave market of a place called Tradewood, deep in Vajramon’s land. The city was named that because it started off as a trading town that was a mile or so from a forest. Or time the marketplace there had gotten huge as the place grew. The place sold almost everything now.
After a bit he looked back up at Moira and asked. “Do you think they were right? That my family and the others were taken as slaves? Is that why they didn’t come back?” He asked? He’d stared to think that what the two men thought had happened to his family once he realized what they wanted with him.
“I wish I knew.” She told him. Before she could say more the door opened and three men entered. Two of them had blond hair, while the last guy had short messy dark hair and a short beard.. The shorter blond guy had shoulder length hair and was wearing a blue shirt and tan colored worn pants. The dark haired guy had on a off white shirt and jeans. The taller of the two blond men had his hair trimmed short and was dressed better than the other two, though not fancy. He had brown jacket and gray pants
Seeing them Ryan tensed. He didn’t know the taller of the two blond men, but the other two were the ones that had brought him here. The three made their way over to Ryan. When they got there the dark haired guy looked down at Moira for a moment before looking back at Ryan. Bending down he grabbed his arm and pulled him to his feet and out of the cell and into a small well light room near by.
“So will you take and train him?” The dark haired guy said, speaking to the tall blond man.
“Hmm.” The man moved closer to look him over. Ryan didn’t like the way he was looking at him. He didn’t like the idea of being ‘trained’ at all. He was a human! Not some animal.
“I’ll take him. I think he’d do well with light manual labor or house work. I think he should be ready for the auction at Theril in two months.”
~~~
“Ok, I think we have enough.”
Coming back to the present the Ryan nodded. Apemon had bought some chickens while he’d been lost in his memories but luckily the guy they’d bought them from agreed to bring them up to the manor later. With the heavy basket Ryan wasn’t sure he’d been able to carry any of the birds as well.
The walk back along the road to the manner was just as uneventfully as when they came to town. Following Apemon into the large kitchen, the teen set his basket down next to Apemon’s on the table. “Is there anything else you need me to do?”
“No, you can… wait there is one thing.” Smiling a little she grabbed a fresh roll and tossed it to the surprised teen. “Sit down and eat that first.”
Catching the roll he nodded and sat down at the table. As he took a bite Apemon placed a small cup of cider before him. “Thanks.” Apemon had always been kind to him and Grapleomon’s other slaves, but she rarely allowed anyone to have a snack so he hadn’t expected this. ’Maybe she wants to make sure I get something to eat just in case I don’t finish all my chores in time.’
Once he was finished he put the cup with the other dirty dishes and then thanked her again. Leaving the kitchen he went outside after the cloth he’d left by the back door. Dropping it off in the wash room he grabbed some clean rags then and a bucket. After filling it with water he headed up stairs and started washing all the windows in area he was assigned.
~~~
Once he was finished washing the windows he set the bucket down and looked out a one of them at the sun. On a normal day he’d have been finished by now but he still had one more thing to do. He had to finish getting the rooms Mystimon was staying in ready. Luckily one of the hired maids had should have already cleaned most of it so he’d not have too much to do.
Hurrying along the servant passages he made his way to the suite. Opening the large door he looked around the sitting room for a moment. There as a large stone fire place in one of the walls. Before the fire place were comfortable looking arm chairs and a push rug. The floors in the suite, like the most to the house as hard wood. Along the other wall was a couple of shelves with books.
Pulling his eyes away he got to work washing all the windows in the set of rooms. Once he finished washing the last one he returned to the main room in the suite and looked at the clock on the mantle. ’Dame it…’ He thought seeing how late it was getting. He had something else to worry about other then getting food tonight now. It was getting close to when they could expect Mystimon to arrive… and he still wasn’t done.
Grabbing the water bucket he hurried down to the wash room. Dropping the bucket off, he hurried out back and grabbed as much fire wood as he could carry before hurrying back up to the suite. After putting them in the rot iron holder next to the fireplace he hurried back outside and grabbed one more arm full and hushed back.
He put most of those it firewood holder as well but the last few of the blocks he placed in the fire place. Finally he was done. Getting to his feet he headed to the door, but froze as it opened. Looking back and forth between the tall elf like digimon dressed in a well made red outfit, who he figured must be Mystimon without his armor, and the equally armor less Grapleomon (he was just wearing a pair of black leather pants) he wondered what to do. He should have been long gone by now.
“Ryan…”
“I’m sorry Sir. I’m leaving now.” Able to move again he started past them out the door.
“Wait.” A deep voice called to him. “Light the fire before you go.”
Turning he nodded and went back over to the fire place. Grabbing the flint and steel from its compartment on the wood holder he got to work. As he hit them together, trying to light the tinder under the larger pieces of wood he could feel their eye’s on his back. Once the fire was going he put the flint and steel away and stood up.
Keeping his head down, he slowly walked past them. Once he was out of the suite and in the servant’s passage his pace quickened. Knowing dinner was over he hurried down to the servants courters. An older broad shouldered man with dark brown hair and a skinny straw haired boy dressed in the same brown pants and sleeves tan shirt as him where already in the room. Greg and Darin, two of Grapleomon’s other slaves.
“Did you just get done? You really took your time today didn’t you.” Darin, the blond boy, said smirking a little.
“Leave him alone. It’s not like you haven’t missed dinner before either.” Kathleen, a tall dark haired woman with pale skin in a simple brown dress, told the as she entered the room she shared with them. In her hands she had a chuck of bread and a small piece of cheese. “I saved these for you.”
“Thanks.” Ryan said taking the food from the dark haired woman. Sitting down he ate while listening to Kat and Greg talk about how busy and tiring the day had been. Like him they’d had plenty of extra work to do. Worn out from the day’s work he got his sleeping mat for an old shelf along the back wall. After laying it out he wrapped himself up in his blanket and lay down to sleep.
