Disclaimer: I do not own pokemon, and I make no money off this. All characters except the original character belong to Pokemon. |
Expanded Summary: A local breeder's assistant, 20 year old Felicia Harding, has only ever had one solitary pokemon. Her real dream isn't to take over the Pokemon League, beat the gyms, or even become a formidable trainer. Her dream is to follow in her boss's footsteps and become a rare pokemon breeder. When N encounters her in the field of the property caring for a wild pokemon, he decides her knowledge is better served as an employee of Team Plasma, and convinces her with promises of money and a great breeding center and hires her to his right hand. But slowly, he starts viewing her differently - less like an employee, and more like a friend. Soon, he doesn't know what hit him.
Information: This is set in Unova, in transition before N meets the main character of Pokemon Black/White. As I have no other way to compare information from the TV show, I will be basing this on the game information and stats on Serebii. N is 23, unlike the ONE character spread I managed to find, which says he is 17+. I'm sorry, he strikes me a little physically older than 17... So for the sake of this story, N is 23. He also has light green hair and matching eyes since I have not yet seen any solid definition of either. I MIGHT throw in a beast, but it's not likely. That isn't where I want to go with this story, so please don't ask or request. I have another Pokemon story (older gen) which has a few beast lemons in it. There will likely be some violence and some sex as well as WAFF in places, but I'm not doing slash or hardcore anything. That being said, strap yourself in for one hell of a ride. :D

Prelude
The thunder was heavy with wind and rain. The once brilliant Skies above Accumula Town were now black with storm clouds. Whether it was that strange pokemon or another storm, Doctor Harding didn't know. The flashes of brilliant electric bolts struck down too close to the house for comfort, as it's brilliant lights cast a sudden white hue over the treed and housed terrain outside the window of the living room.
"D-daddy..." squeaked a quiet female voice. "I'm scare. Sky too loud. Wet loud and lights scaaaary. Me no wan' to set stuck." Doctor Harding turned around to view his small daughter, clad in bright pink pajamas, clinging to her actual-size Litwick stuffy - which was almost half as tall as the small three year old was. Outside of the brightly colored jammies, all you could see of the little girl was her large plume of baby pastel purple, almost lavender colored hair, and large, round, fear-filled amber eyes. Doctor Harding gave the small child a kind, understanding grin. Everything was frightening her since the accident. He shook off the memory before the all too fresh wounds of it made him tear up.
"Yes Felicia, it's loud, and dark, and raining. This isn't going to hurt you, though; you're safe inside and dry, away from the storm outside. Nothing will happen to you this time, okay?"
"But me scare, daddy. Storm gon' get me. Lipwit said." Lipwit; her word for Litwick. She hadn't mastered the finer points of many words, and Litwick was no exception.
"Felicia, can stuffed pokemon toys talk for real?" Doctor Harding asked, tipping his head, as if to scold her gently.
"Noooooo..." she replied, hanging her head, nuzzling her nose into the stuffy.
"Can your mind make you more scared than you need to be, sometimes?" he probed again, squatting down to talk to her on her level.
"Yeaaa...." she nuzzled even closer, trying not to make eye contact. She knew she was safe, but it was really scary outside, and it made her think of the accident. She tried not to cry as daddy placed his hand on her shoulder. It gave her comfort knowing daddy was still there, but she wanted mommy's quiet cuddle for scary-time.
"I know its scary outside, but you're not outside, not this time. Nothing can get you inside; not while daddy has pokemon."
"Can shut off lights and loud?" she asked, flicking her watery eyes up at the large window behind daddy, as if he had the power to shut off the storm.
"I can't stuf off the storm - but would it help if I put on some music in your room so you can't hear it?" Felicia nodded slowly, but stared at the flashing light and pounding rain. It looked just like it did last time, and it made her remember running in it, trailing behind mommy, who was carrying the new babies, running home from dinner with the brown haired lady.
Doctor Harding saw the drifting, fearful expression of his daughter's face, and knew she'd gone back to the night of the last storm, not just 2 weeks ago.

"Mommy too fast! Mommy too fast! Mommy to faaaaaaaaast!" she'd called out, running as fast as she could behind her mother. She was stumbling almost from the speed as she clung to her pants' pocket. Mommy couldn't carry her this time; she had her new sister and brother in her arms. Felicia had to run alone, but mommy was going too fast. It made her scared, because mommy was going too fast, she was almost tripping over her own feet.
"We have to hurry, baby; the storm's getting worse, and the babies can get sick." the unmistakeable panic was in her mommy's voice, which didn't help her own fear at all. "We're halfway there, just a little further, baby. Daddy will be waiting right at the end of the road for us, you can almost see his white coat. We'll--" but mommy's voice cut off, and the grip on her mommy's pocket was gone, and mommy was falling over. The bank by the water off route 1 had broken, and the slick mud made the woman lose her balance. Before Felicia could even react, mommy was gone - just a ripple on the water, and a spatter of red along the rocks in front of it.
"Mommy?" she remembered calling out, looking left, looking right, looking at the rippling water. "MOMMY?!"

"Felicia!" Doctor Harding called out, not liking the expression on the child's face. He didn't want her to think about it and suffer. "You're alright, you're at home. You're safe."
"No, mommy not here. Not safe." she protested, crying into the soft plush of her Litwick stuffy. Doctor Harding frowned. He didn't know how to help her, how to keep her from hurting and crying like that. He didn't want his daughter to grow up with that big of a knot in her heart.
"Would you feel safe if you had a REAL Litwick?" he probed, mind flicking back to his visit to Celesital Tower to bury his wife's pokemon, which had drowned at her side, trapped ironically in it's pokeball, unable to break free to save her, or the babies. He had been followed by a lone Litwick that day, which kept trailing after him ernestly as he tried to leave, to pick up his daughter from Professor Juniper's lab. This wasn't a place for kids. Since the silly pokemon kept following him, he'd decided to at least catch it, and perhaps donate it to Juniper for her research. But now, it seemed to have a better home.
Felicia thought about the proposal for a moment, then nodded eagerly. Lipwit was the stuffy mommy gave her, and now she could have a REAL Lipwit. For the first time in a while, Felicia smiled, as daddy passed her the red and white ball. She even grinned as she tossed the ball hapazardly upwards into the air and exclaimed "Goooo, Lipwit!" she called out, as the ball released the foot tall living candle.
"LITWICK!" the pokemon exclaimed, thinking it got to be out in a battle. "Lit?" it glanced around, facing the child that had sent her out. "Lit-lit!"
"Keep her safe from the storm, Litwick. Take her to bed and be strong!" Doctor Harding said.
"Lit!" the little candle exclaimed, letting it's flame burn hotter for a moment as a serious expression washed over it's face. After a moment, it returned to it's casual, happy appearance.
"Go bed now!" Felicia exclaimed, dashing off, forgetting completely about the storm, mommy, and the accident. She had her very own Litwick! Doctor Harding heaved an emotional sigh, and flopped down on the couch.
"Oh Angela; why did you not just stay with the professor?..."

Chapter 1 - Innocence and Reality Meet
"That's it Oshawott, it's just some food, I'm not going to hurt you!" said a soft-spoken purple-haired girl, her honey-colored eyes glittering with happiness. "I just want to feed you!" the girl was wearing a casual pair of black jeans, and a medium blue button-up style shirt. The purple hair was very straight and was cut to touch her shoulders, but no further. It was held back with a tight black bandana, the back of which was left loose to drape over her hair. She wasn't a tiny girl, but was by no means fat, at a curved, healthy size 12. She laid casually on her stomach, arm outstretched with a large piece of pokemon food. The grasses outside of Lostlorn Forest wouldn't do much to mark up her outfit on this summer day, thankfully. Not many people knew, but just south of Lostlorn, through the trees and into a clearing, there was a small house on a large piece of clearing, with a sign that read "Lostlorn Breeder Co - Making the rare a little less rare." The girl, 20 year old Felicia Harding, was the assistant to the chief breeder at this company, and was now trying to coax an ill-looking and small Oshawott into trusting her enough to be able to bring it back, and treat the poor thing. It had been hanging around for a few days now, and without any decent bodies of water nearby, the poor thing was probably sick from lack of access to water. It was so small, the other water pokemon would likely chase it off and keep it away from the water.
"Osh? Oshaaa? Wott wott?" it spoke out, sniffing at the piece of food.
"I'm not going to do anything, I just want to feed you and help you feel better. Okay?"
"Oshaaa?" it squeaked, tentatively taking the piece of food in it's paw. It jumped back a bit, giving distance to eat the food. It didn't trust her yet. This was going to take a while.
"What on EARTH are you doing?" questioned a strange male voice. The Oshawott jumped, and ran headlong into the brush. Felicia sighed, and slowly stood up.
"What does it look like? I was trying to feed as sick pokemon. What are YOU doing sneaking up on people?" she retorted, brushing bits of dried grass off herself. She flicked her eyes up to see a man not much older than her, with odd, pale green hair, almost a sea foam green. Though, he probably thought her medium lavender colored hair was odd, too. He had matching colored eyes, and had a label-less black and white ball cap on, which didn't entirely suit is tan khakis and white dress jacket left partially open over top of a white dress shirt and black tie.
"I wasn't sneaking. You merely didn't hear me. It's not my fault you didn't hear me. If you're too focused on the wild Oshawott to hear me, it's not my error. You on the other hand were feeding a wild pokemon? Why bother, if it clearly wants nothing to do with you? Seems to me it's a pointless venture to take an unwilling pokemon along with you by tricking it. I'll just hate you and get hurt. I could practically hear it's fear from back there."
"I'm NOT trying to catch it, thank you very much," she snorted indignantly, eying him from head to toe and back again. "I'm not a trainer, I don't like the whole make pokemon fight for pointless pleasure thing; I'm a breeder's assistant, we were trying to bring it in to heal it; that is, until you popped in out of nowhere and scared the poor thing away. It's only afraid because the other wild pokemon have been driving it out of it's habitat." she corrected. The man's eyes flickered faintly with a mixture of relief, and interest.
"A breeder? So, you take in wild pokemon to create more? What exactly do you do with these baby pokemon?"
"Nothing, aside from make sure their parents have access to food, water, and good nests, and of course make sure they're safe. We try and keep as little interaction as we can. Why don't you come for coffee? I'll show you exactly what we do. I'm Felicia." she spoke, glad -someone- seemed to be actually interested in what they did. Most people didn't stay long enough to be told, or just didn't care. If this person got to know, and told others, maybe they'd get some happy volunteers to help out, so it all wasn't on her and her boss. Felicia put out her hand, and offered it to the green-haired man.
"I am N; I would be keenly interested in finding out what you're up to. Lead on." he replied, taking her hand to shake it absently. If she was a breeder of WILD pokemon, that meant they probably stayed wild. She and her boss would have valuable knowledge about wild pokemon that might indeed help Team Plasma's cause. He had the time to burn before taking on the gym nearby, it was a worthwhile venture.
Felicia grinned. She was eager to teach someone else, anything else, about their breeding project. She grabbed his hand, almost like a trusting child, and dashed off through the trees, towards the little home not too far away. Once on the property, she let go of his hand, and stepped up on the raw wood step of the beaten up deck of the home, which looked no bigger than about 500 square feet in total.
"Welcome to Lostlorn Breeding Company! Our mission is to help bring up the population of endangered or rare pokemon that are having a hard time breeding or surviving on their own. We provide healthy food, water, and plenty of space for them to come and do their thing, raise their young, and branch off into the wild and make families of their own! There's enough space for a dozen or so pairs and their children at any given time. We make sure no predator or pest pokemon, like Patrats or Sandiles, get in and mess things up." N's eyes roamed over the state of the building. It needed quite a bit of work, and if the entire premises was like this, it certainly wouldn't be such a safe place for pokemon to breed. Noticing his critiquing glance, she explained.
"We're a not-for-profit company that survives on donations, volunteers, and breeding trainers' pokemon for a fee, but we don't get much of any, so all the money we get goes into caring for the pokemon. We'd advertise, but we can't afford it, and I'm the only volunteer. If we could, we'd fix everything, and advertise, but we can't, yet. There's just too much to do to let me get an outside job to get the money for repairs. So, let's go inside for that coffee, and you can meet my boss, the head breeder!"
"Alright...fair enough. Lead on, then..." N replied quietly, frowning slightly. They had a good idea, but it seemed the narrow-minded trainers and humans around this area didn't seem to care about anything outside enslaving their poor, tortured, ball-ridden pokemon. The situation seemed to be that these good-hearted people were slowly drowning in the debt of their own passions.
"Liiiiit?" a pokemon cried out, as the small, candle-shaped pokemon skittered across the deck towards Felicia. N's brow rose slightly as she grinned and caught the little pokemon in her arms as it jumped towards her.
"Hi Litwick! I haven't been gone 20 minutes, and you already miss me?" she asked, almost looking like she'd forgotten about N's presence.
"Lit-Lit!"
"You...you have a pokemon of your own?" he questioned, a hint of anger flicking through his eyes, which she thankfully missed.
"Sort of. Litwick, well, he's more of a companion than a trained pokemon. I never keep him in his pokeball. I don't like confining pokemon to those little things. Litwick's more or less the pokemon that keeps the wild ones safe from predators, trainers, and the like. He's not really so much a captive pokemon as another volunteer, really."
"Litwick!" the little pokemon agreed, cuddling his human happily.
"You really think so, Litwick?" N said, glancing at the pokemon. "He said--"
"He said that he belongs here, I know." Felicia cut off, letting the pokemon drop to the ground and dash off as she turned to put her hand on the front door. "He wanted you to know that he belongs here. He thinks you don't like captive pokemon, much more so than I." N blinked a few times, processing the information.
"You...You can hear them, too? I haven't met anyone so far who can; I was beginning to think that I was the only one."
"I've understood Litwick since I was a little girl. Other pokemon, I can pick up words here and there, but none like Litwick."
"Interesting...He said you dislike captive pokemon? What exactly did he mean?"
"My mother was lab assistant, and my father was a pokemon doctor - I was raised seeing many hurt pokemon, and it just seems a silly venture to make pokemon fight each other for the latest gym badge or to become the so called strongest trainer out there. I can see why people like it, but there's just too much grey area for my liking. I just prefer to breed them and set them free; to see and enjoy them as wild, free creatures, not as a house pet. Litwick is my only exception but that's only because he wants to be here and wants to be with me. If he told me he wanted to leave, to be wild, and to be free, I'd let him go. It would hurt, but he needs to be wherever he belongs." Felicia explained, as she led him in to the small, old-styled house. A little old lady was sitting at a round dinner table close by, filling out paperwork. He trailed after her, pondering her abilities, and beliefs. "Hi Mrs Gennest, this is N. He was interested in what we do, so I'm showing him around."
"Hi." she replied, without even looking up. She was focused on whatever paperwork she was doing. Felicia smiled at her, stepping with a bounce to the coffee pot, which had been left on. She plucked a white mug from the drying up pile of the dishes, and handed it to N.
"Help yourself, N; cream's in the fridge, sugar's on the left of the pot there." The house wasn't stylish or pretty, but looked old, and yet, homely at the same time. N nodded thankfully at her, almost concerned at the state of the coffee, but politely poured one, anyway. He added cream, but not sugar, and stepped aside.
"So tell me; what happens to the wild pokemon that breed?" he asked, trailing after Felicia as she walked towards a second exterior door, leading through to the back yard.
"They either stay with their parents, here, or they leave; it really depends on the type. We don't let trainers catch them on our property, and Litwick likes to scare them off if they're hovering nearby. The only time trainers come here is if they're buying time for us to breed their pokemon, which we do inside, away from the wild pokemon. Doesn't usually take us long, but its expensive, because of costs, so most trainers don't bother. I don't like breeding captive pokemon just to create more captive pokemon, but we have to pay the bills somehow." she answered, stepping out into the sun room which overlooked the expanse of 5 acres behind the house. There were three large containers of food and one of water, each with a pipe that led outside of the home, presumably a self-feeding station. One container had green food, another had red, and the third had blue - presumably plant, red meat, and fish meat. The water was half empty.
"I see..." N replied, looking at the large field, almost empty of pokemon, save for a pair of Zebstrika's almost out of sight. "...Where exactly are they all?" the property was edged by a large fence, which had many gaps in it. It seemed more to mark the perimeter than serve as a means to keep people or pokemon out.
"Some are in Lostlorn forest, some are hiding, and others haven't come back in a couple days, so I assume they've left." N remained silent for a moment, standing behind her in the doorway. This girl, her talents and beliefs, would be a key asset to his team, and what they were working for. She could help him populate the wild pokemon to the levels they were before humans interrupted them; she could make it so the strong and powerful pokemon roamed everywhere, not just farthest away from humans as possible. She could breed the best for Ghetsis and the others, so they could become more convincing to the public. He wanted her; he needed her. He would have her on his team.
"What if I told you I could provide you with a state-of-the-art facility, a regular wage, and any amount of space or funding you require? What if I offered you a job with my father's company? What if I offered your boss a settlement of money for your absence to come and help me, enough to fix everything and hire some help? What would you say to that, Felicia? How about you come be my Project Lead?" he asked, before taking a sip of the hot coffee. To his surprise, it wasn't that bad at all.
Felicia's eyes rose and widened at N's proposal.
"Are you SERIOUS? If you're joking, that's one sick joke....I've always dreamed of leading my own project, one day!" N smirked at her response.
"Yes, I am very serious. What of it, Felicia? Come and work for me."
"I..." she trailed off, casting her eyes over to Mrs Gennest, in her frail, 60 year old form. Her attention had been torn from her paperwork, and she was staring intently at N. "I couldn't leave her, I--"
"How much?" Mrs Gennest interrupted, standing from the table, looking at him over her glasses. "How much for the trade of her?"
"Five million?" N threw out, shrugging off the random number. Mrs Gennest's eyes widened almost as wide as Felicia's.
"FIVE MILLION? I could fix everything and then some, get some new equipment, advertise, AND hire a couple people! Felicia, say you'll go with him. This would solve all of Lostlorn Breeders' problems, and give you the start you deserve. I need no more convincing, even as sudden as it is! Go on, Felicia; it will be just fine, you'll see!"
Felicia flustered. What was she going to do? She wanted to go, yet she wanted to stay. It was almost too good to be true, and yet, it was too true to not believe. She glanced quickly between N and Mrs Gennest, torn. She knew it would fix everything for everyone involved, but could she just upheave her life and take off with some strange, cute, green haired man?!
Seeing her fluster, N reached into his pocket and pulled out a check book. "I can write it now, you can cash this today...and your pokemon can come with you, if he wants..." That was the breaking point for her.
"Alright! I'll come! I'll help you!" she exclaimed, running to the door to call in her Litwick.
