AN: READ THIS: Ok I got a request to continue my vampire oneshots (Bitter and Taste; read these first) and make them in to a series, and you know what *sigh* I don't usually back away from requests or challenges and really, vampire mello is sexy as long as he's not sparkling. XD
So here we are, the final fic in the series.

~Aftertaste: Immortal~
Mello sat in the sun-room, a rather ironic thing as the sun was hardly seen anymore, and drank in the pre-night sky. Though it was dull and grey outside it was only around four in the afternoon. Mello couldn't wait until it was true night. The city was always much busier then and the hunt was much more fun when all the different types of people amassed in the streets, going to a fro.
Movement behind him caused Mello gaze to shift to the other occupant of the loft.
Matt. Or Mail. He was both and neither at the same time. His greens eyes had darkened after the change, a more of a forest green than the emerald they had been. But not much else with his appearance had changed.
His personality however…
Mello lamented the fact that he was bored. Something had changed in the last hundred years that left him at odds with contentment. He enjoyed his hunts and toying with the lesser beings, but he was bored. Tired. Perhaps it was the repetitiveness of his many centuries of life, or something deeper he didn't want to acknowledge. Either way he longed for something. Something he couldn't fathom.
"Matt, what do you fancy for a meal today? Sweet, spicy?" Mello didn't listen for an answer. There wouldn't be one. Matt was alive, in the undead sense, and he drank blood as required of him, enough to keep him alive, but his mind was... absent?
He was like soulless puppet, completely unresponsive to outside stimuli and it intrigued Mello. He knew there was still a mind in there, had seen very feint flickers of it, though he couldn't figure a reason for it to have retreated as far as it had without snapping.
Mello had expected to break the other not make him a living doll. Whatever process had gone on was more than a mere shattering of the mind. It was as though the virus had shoved the mind, Mail's personality, into hiding to protect it from disappearing. It was unheard of.
And fascinating.
Mello had a lingering thought, one that haunted him at the most inappropriate of times. He wanted to break through that veil. He wanted to force Matt to show emotions, to pay attention to something, anything. Despite the remaining bitterness over what Matt had done two lives ago, Mello felt the twinges of guilt rise in him as he saw the creature before him.
Mello sighed heavily. He missed Matt's mind.
No, he corrected himself. He missed a mind to talk with. Not Matt.
Matt passed by Mello's left side and went to stand before the vast window; it took up much of the room and had there been a sun left in the sky there would have been no place to hide from its rays. Matt always stood there, standing and staring out at the world. Mello did not know what he saw, or if he saw anything at all. But he wanted to. And he would.
He just didn't know how to go about it.
.
Matt's body connected with the ground and rolled across the wood paneled floor. No reaction. No fangs, no narrowing of the eyes. Nothing. Direct pain didn't work.
Mello had been actively seeking a reaction from Matt for weeks, bordering months. And still nothing. He was getting frustrated. Something twisted in his chest as Matt pulled himself off the floor and Mello kicked him down again.
He was furious, and hungry. He hadn't gone feeding yet, hadn't hunted in days. He couldn't understand why Matt commanded so much of his attention and focus. It bothered him. Mello did not feel anything for the body in front of him, so why was he unable to divert thoughts of him from his mind?
With a small snarl Mello stripped himself of his vest, tossing it in the direction of the chair and kicked off his boots. Matt attempted to leave the floor again and Mello pinned him to it. He bit into the others neck but did not drink. He tightened his grip on the soft flesh and waited until small droplets of blood formed.
It wasn't that they couldn't bleed, just that there wasn't much blood in their systems to shed. Not unless they had just gorged themselves on blood. The virus steeled their internal organs into an eternal sleep and literally burned the blood from their bodies. Their bodies were frozen in time, immortal, but without blood they would wither and die.
Mello tore the shirt from Matt and those lazy green eyes bore up at him, mocking him in their silence.
Matt would be left with a scar on his neck once he fed and it healed; their wounds would close but never heal beyond a scar.
Mello flipped Matt onto his stomach and with a frantic glint in his eyes, stripped him. He was frustrated, angry and possibly even in denial. He wanted Matt to do something. Cry, yell, talk to him damn it!
With a hand on the redhead's neck that pressed Matt's face into the floor, Mello entered him just as he had on the night of his transformation. The reaction was instantaneous.
Matt's elbow caught Mello in the chin and Mello was smacked to the floor by a fist to the face. Something had snapped in the otherwise dormant vampire and Mello was on his feet in seconds to counteract whatever the threat may be.
Mello was stilled by the look of utter blood-lust in Matt's eyes. Matt didn't give him a chance to react and was upon him in seconds. The force of the blow, Matt's fist against his ribs, surprised Mello. Matt was strong. Possibly stronger than him, a vampire aged older than a thousand years.
Catching him by the arm Matt shoved Mello into the wall, Mello's head smacked into it and his lips parted as Matt's fangs sank into the hollow of his throat. Mello let out a strangled moan as Matt pressed himself bodily against him, arousal apparent.
Try as he might, the smell of his own blood and the danger in Matt's eyes turned Mello on in a way nothing had in a very long time.
And just when Mello thought he might give in, and that Matt might take him right there against the wall, the redhead backed off, that familiar blank look washing over him as he turned to stare out the window a few feet away as though the last few minutes had never occurred.
Mello slid down the wall, breathless and shaking with want. So there was something inside of Matt. Something deep beneath the surface.
Mello got the feeling however, that reenacting the rape was a bad idea. Fingering the wound on his body, he nodded. There was a way into Matt's mind, but that wasn't it.
.
.
Mello swore and tossed his ruined jacket to the floor; he didn't dare glance at Matt for fear of trying to seriously injure him. His fingers clenched and unclenched. He was unsatisfied.
Feeding that night had not gone well. Not in the least.
Mello didn't usually take Matt with him during feedings, usually bringing one or two home for Matt to drink from but something had possessed him to take Matt. He was never going to listen to that urge ever again. It had been an absolute disaster.
And if Mello didn't know better he would have thought Matt had done it on purpose. Matt had made a mess of things. Mello had picked the targets, cornered them and Matt had taken off after someone else. His eyes had been full of that dullness so Mello couldn't even blame it on blood-lust.
Matt had attacked, drank from and killed a human in the middle of a heavily crowded street. Mello couldn't deny how attractive Matt was with blood dripping from his mouth and down his pale skin as the moon shown above him but they still lived in a world where the humans ruled no matter how powerful their kind may be.
It was practically a crime to do that out in the open.
That area had been one of Mello's favorites for hunting; he wouldn't dare go there anytime soon. With a frustrated sigh Mello kicked off his boots and nodded his head at the vicious thump they made upon contact with the wall.
His anger faded and left him feeling oddly disappointed. He couldn't figure out the reason for it. Though it might have had to do with the way Matt's eyes were locked on the moon, those soulless eyes that never flickered towards him.
Mello closed his eyes and pushed back those thoughts that had once only belonged to Mihael. They had no place in this time. Mello pulled Matt into the bathroom with him and stripped Matt bare, shoving him under the warm spray.
They were both coated in blood and Mello didn't even want to think of the incident that had occurred after the people had started screaming. Mello sneered, pushing Matt aside so he could join him. Insolent cattle, and yet he and Matt still had to hide. Give it a few hundred more years and Mello was certain the dark creatures would be well known, and perhaps wouldn't have to hide any longer.
Mello let his eyes roam across Matt and frowned. "Gods you are filthy." he tossed a bar of soap at Matt and ignored the way it smacked the other in the chest. He knew damn well Matt could have caught it.
Mello washed himself, scrubbing the blood off and taking care to properly clean his hair. When he turned back to Matt he found the other standing in the same exact position, splotches of blood stained to his skin and eyes staring at him. Mello shivered.
Mello didn't know what set Matt off, perhaps attempting to wash him or perhaps something else entirely, and Mello didn't particularly care. He had merely raised the bar of soap to Matt's cheek where the blood was and Matt had leapt at him, crushing his body against the slippery shower tiles.
Mello snarled and shoved at Matt but was held fast by fingers gripping him all too harshly. Mello let his head fall back to the tiles as Matt pushed into him, rocking and jerking against him, fucking him.
Matt's lips came to rest by his ear and though Mello could hear the tiny escapes of breath he lost himself in those violent thrusts; the kind that sent tingling pleasure throughout his groin and had him pressing into those thrusts, more than enjoying it.
Matt's grip turned light, but only after Mello had unconsciously pulled Matt closer and stopped fighting. Mello closed his eyes and let himself be washed away by the pleasure, all sound leaving his ears and his vision going dark. It was mind blowing.
Mello knew the second before Matt came, the way Matt's cock twitched inside him and the trusts became sloppier. "Mihael." Matt whispered in his ear before pulling back, standing docile under the running water.
Mello stared breathlessly at him, half thinking he had imagined it. "What did you call me?" he hadn't heard that voice, or that name, in over a thousand years... there was no way he had imagined it.
Mello gently ran a finger down Matt's cheek, mood pensive; he didn't miss the way those green eyes had flickered toward him for a brief movement before going still again. Matt's mind was definitely intact somewhere in there, the question though, was how to reach it, and keep it.
.
.
Mello was agitated; not exactly a new feeling though there was something different this time. He couldn't pinpoint his agitation. It was a nagging feeling of general wrongness and there was no reason for it. Things had been calm since three weeks ago; no humans trying and failing to hunt them down, no sign of other vampires and no more 'incidents'.
But there was definitely something wrong. Mello just couldn't figure it out.
It was practically screaming in his head and in his veins to the point where Mello was pacing around the apartment. The stench of old blood filled the room from that nights meal but that wasn't the problem.
Snarling, Mello paused and let his eyes glide across the room over every surface and very fixture. Nothing stood out. Mello felt tempted to pull at his hair. He had never felt like this, like his entire being was on high alert, agitated and warning him.
Mello shut his eyes and pictured the room. He had been pacing non stop and needed a moment-
Why was the second human still bound on the floor? They were dead yes, but as Mello's eyes flew open he already knew they hadn't been fed upon. Every fiber of his being hummed at the discovery. Why hadn't they been fed on? That had been Matt's.
Speaking of which, Mello couldn't remember when in the last few days he had seen the other for more than a few sparing seconds as Matt gazed at the moon. Mello didn't bother calling out as Matt wouldn't have answered anyway and simply rushed through the rooms of the flat.
As he did so Mello racked his brain for the last time he had seen Matt feed. Dead humans, bleed humans, didn't mean a damn thing. The realization would have taken the breath from his lungs had there been any need of air. Matt hadn't feed in over a week.
Mello checked the bathroom, Matt's room, the goddamn sun room and the study but hadn't found him. Flinging open his own room's door Mello was unprepared to see Matt sprawled across the floor on his side, arm flung about by his head and green eyes half lidded.
Mello didn't need to check him to know that Matt needed blood. He rushed from the flat and wasn't picky about his choice in food. The taste of the blood could hardly matter less at that moment and Mello didn't think Matt would care much either.
Mello chose the first person he came across and incapacitated them, hauling them over his shoulder and taking to the rooftops to get back. Why hadn't Matt been feeding? He had never had a problem doing so before. Why? Mello's thoughts ran in circles and were as frantic as his actions.
He dumped the girl beside Matt, slit her wrist and brought it to Matt's lips. Matt struggled weakly and turned his head, unwanting of the blood. "Goddamnit, why won't you drink?"
Mello tried forcing the blood into Matt's mouth but all the redhead did was let his fill up until he could spit it out. Same being said for when Mello had managed to get a mouthful into Matt's system, Matt had turned and thrown it up.
Mello was... scared. Terrified. Matt was so weak and would die if he didn't feed, might still die. How could he have not noticed all those missed meals? Mello didn't want to loose him. Matt wasn't just something that fascinated him, or something to keep him company, he was someone Mello-
Mello bit into his own wrist and pressed it to Matt's lips silently pleading with the redhead to drink. He stared down into those green eyes, trembling. He had turned Matt, so perhaps his own blood would entice him. Mello had just fed so there would be enough, and if nothing else there was the woman bleeding out on the floor beside them.
For a long moment Matt wouldn't drink and when Mello had just about given up, nearly giving into those teary dry heaving sobs, Matt's tongue flecked out to slide across Mello's bloody wrist.
"Matt?" Mello pressed his wrist closer and prayed that his blood would be enough until Matt was willing to drink someone else's.
Mello felt surprise grip him as green eyes flickered to him and Matt gave a half smile marred by his attempts at feeding; it was just a tiny smile but the weight of it had Mello pulling Matt as tightly against him as the other would go.
"Matt." he whispered and felt the other hum a response and grinned. Mello didn't know if it was his blood, or the feeling behind it or if Matt had finally saw fit to show himself, but Mello was certain his mind wouldn't be retreating again.
Mello had many things to atone for; the abuse he had put Matt through for over a century for starters. He hoped one day Matt would forgive him, but for now he was just happy the other was back, that his mind was safe. And from the looks of it, intact.
.
.
It had been a long one hundred and forty-four months since Matt's mind had broken the surface for the final time and things had been alright since then. Awkward and tense at times, violent and hurtful but the wounds they had inflicted on each other, Mello many more than Matt, had begun to heal.
Mello had barely left Matt alone in the first month since he had gotten Matt to feed from him, and Matt had hardly been awake for most of it. It had gradually eased out as Matt became wakeful and drank willingly. Matt confessed to remember every second his mind had been trapped since rebirth. He remembered both previous incarnations. Mello hadn't been able to look at him for some time after, ashamed for perhaps the first time since his birth as Mello.
Matt didn't seem to hold a grudge and it had only made Mello feel worse. Mello hadn't wallowed in those feelings, instead working on repairing the damage done. He still had those feelings of betrayal but they were dimmed by other things. Things Matt made him feel. Things that Mello wasn't certain he should have been able to still feel.
Mello had lain down to contemplate it, closing his eyes and smiling as Matt had come to rest beside him. Mello let his consciousness slip into the abyss and slept, one of the few times Matt was with him as he did so.
Mello woke to find Matt watching him; instead of feeling worried or annoyed Mello grinned and traced the scar along Matt's left eye softly, letting the jutted flesh flow beneath his fingers. It was a solid reminder of what he had done to the other in pursuit of fascination. It would never go away but the feelings behind the act already had.
Matt cocked his head to the side, eyes smiling. "Morning Mello."
Mello leaned up to kiss him and was rewarded when it was deepened, his head being tilted back and held carefully in Matt's hands. If his heart could still beat, it would have been racing. Matt and only Matt did those things to him.
Matt pecked him on the cheek afterwards and let his head hit the pillow Mello had been using. Mello felt everything he had been trying to make sense of rush to the surface and was almost overwhelmed by it. It was the truth he had been searching for since turning Matt and a truth he had known all along. He felt stupid for not having realized it.
"I still love you, always have, I just forgot that I did." Mello whispered, awed that he had spoken those words so soon, it almost didn't feel like he had earned the right.
Mihael had loved Matt with everything that he was and as Mello he had felt betrayed by Matt's actions. It was only fitting that as Mello he had come to terms with those lingering feelings and allowed them to turn into something extraordinary and unheard of. He loved Matt. He loved Mail.
"I know. I forgive you." Matt kissed Mello's scar and tangled his fingers in Mello's fine hair. "I love you too."
.
.
Mello sat in the plush oversized chair in the sun-room and stared at the overcast city before him. He watched the city lights flicker with different colors and could practically smell the fragrances that would meet him should he go outside.
Boot steps on the floor told him that Matt was beside him and as Mello looked up Matt smiled with a hand extended. "Come on Mello, let's hunt."
Mello smiled and took his hand.
