Prologue
By ArcadiaEclipse
She ran without pause ever onward through the darkness, one hand preoccupied with half-dragging her crying daughters beside her whist the other clutched a much smaller burden protectively to her chest. It was almost as if the newborn babe knew that his mother was fleeing in mounting terror and for her sake he uttered neither cry nor coo as she ran determinedly towards an old iron gate barely a hundred paces ahead. Excitement mixed with dread as she sped through the darkness with her goal now in sight. She was so close. So close to the precious daylight…
The shadow descended upon her like an angel of death, instantly sending both woman and children sprawling upon the rocky path that demarcated the invisible barrier separating them from freedom. She screamed and clutched her son and daughters close, pulling their heads against her breast in an effort to shield them from the impending horror of their deaths. Ludwig watched all of this with a cold, detached expression, but his words were unmistakable even as a breeze picked up causing his cloak to flutter on the wind.
“It is not befitting of a mother sheep to lead her little lambs to slaughter.”
“I’m sorry!” she yelled, but he could tell that it was desperation, not anger tainting her speech now as she cowered before him. “Please, have mercy! My children deserve sunlight! We can’t live in this place another moment, we…we just…” her voice broke into incoherent sobbing, but Ludwig remained unaffected by her plea and remained standing over the young mother while watching her daughters try in vain to dry her tears with the edge of their tattered skirts.
“No one leaves here.”
“Please. I’ll…I’ll do anything…”
Ludwig was not a man that bargained on a regular basis, but the baby boy in her trembling arms caught his attention and gave the shadowy man pause. He knew that silver hair and pale skin, and although the baby’s eyes were a vivid shade of violet those too seemed strangely reminiscent of the woman that had birthed and raised him nearly two centuries earlier. Could this child be of that rare and oh-so precious bloodline? It had been years since Ludwig last laid eyes upon a Blood Doll and this woman clutching the child certainly did not bare the telltale silver-hair or red eyes that betrayed the lineage.
“He is yours?”
She hugged the babe closer to her breast, oblivious as of yet to the shadow’s mounting interest in her littlest child.
“He is my nephew. My sister died birthing him so he is mine now to care for.”
“…Your sister by blood?”
Something, some tiny nuance in his tone or the rather strange series of questions he uttered gave the young mother pause as if trying to determine what about the small baby’s mother seemed to fascinate the intimidating shadow so greatly. Try as she might, she could not anticipate his train of thought, and ultimately it seemed like an innocent enough question, all things considered. Ultimately, she found herself without any other option but to try and appease the frightening man currently standing over her like a hulking beast ready to feed.
“She was our neighbor’s daughter. They became gravely ill and left her alone in this world.”
“Describe her.”
“U..Uh… She was a…sweet girl. Very kind and a great spirit that-“
“Her eyes.” Slowly Ludwig approached to crouch before her in the path forcing her to focus on him alone. “Did she have red eyes?”
The woman remained ridgid and motionless in the dust, terrified at the shadow hovering mere inches away, but although her silence rather annoyed him Ludwig turned his narrowed glare on the eldest girl now clinging to her mother’s skirts while trembling. Something in his gaze seemed to burrow into her very soul and after a moment of staring up at the shadowy man wide-eyed she nodded.
“And her hair…was it silver?”
Again the small child nodded her head.
This certainly was an unexpected turn of events. And to think he nearly massacred a precious Blood Doll child just to satisfy his need for fresh blood.
Ludwig reached to take the baby away without hesitation, but even after settling into the large shadow’s arms the babe did not shriek or cry but remained calm as if already accepting his rather uncertain fate. Nothing else in this world mattered more than the precious bundle cradled in his arms but Ludwig was still keenly aware that his minions were growing impatient in the nearby trees awaiting his cue that it was time to feed. Below him the young mother hugged her daughters protectively.
“P…Please don’t hurt him.”
“Go. Before I change my mind.”
She opened her mouth as if wanting to further question Ludwig’s plans for the baby boy, but one look from the tall shadow’s piercing eyes silenced the unspoken words in her throat and she rose nearly breathless to tug her daughters along the path quickly towards the gate. It was so close… She was near giddy with anticipation of realizing their freedom after many months in this place of darkness, but glancing back there was still a lingering sensation of regret and guilt.
“You… You won’t hurt him, right?”
“Go.”
She pushed her daughters through the gate into a world of safety far away from this cursed realm and its dark inhabitants but still she paused.
“His name is Gilbert. …Please, I..I promised his mother he would see the sun one day.”
Ludwig never responded but instead turned his back on her and walked down the path towards a large mansion looming in the distance. He could hear his minions snarl and dash towards the gates but the echoing clank of metal latches followed by the anguished shrieks of his frustrated shadows betrayed that she had left his realm forever. The only evidence of her stay was the tiny silver-haired child in his arms gumming his little fist now and staring up at Ludwig with curious amethyst eyes.
