Description: In all of the seven seas, few things strike as much fear into sailors as the Escarlata Marea. A ship run by a man so nefarious, he more than earned his reputation and title as the King of Pirates. But Captain Carriedo is about to encounter a treasure, the likes of which he's never dealt with before.
A/N: the setting for this story is not based on any sort of known history. In a way, I'm sort of mixing several time era's. And though I am using versions of the names of existing countries, I am not actually referring to anywhere on earth. This is a fictional world. Please bear that in mind as you read. And this is just the prologue. Chapters to come will be much longer, I promise.
chapter includes: sadness, I warn thee.
Prologue: The Parting of Ways
It was darker than usual, though he could navigate his way there with his eyes closed. And it certainly helped hide him from what stray guards might be hanging around. Which wasn't many. Those lazy bastards. Though one could hardly blame them, it's not like Italia was a dangerous place, at all. No, his grandfather was old now, done expanding his kingdom. This was Italia's era of peace. So the lax in security wasn't all that surprising, even for the palace.
With footsteps silent and quick, the cloaked teen ghosted into the royal stables, blending into the soft sounds of sleeping horses and the few goats they'd brought in when the sky threatened rain. But it was empty of humans, other than himself. Thank God. Lovino shook his hood back off his head, the sole lit lantern guiding him to the stall of a lovely brown mare. She was already sticking her head over the door when he got close and Lovi smiled a bit.
"It's time, Catania," he murmured softly, petting her snout as her tongue snuck out and grazed his cheek. She was just as ready to go as he was. Lovino made quick work about getting her out of the stall and strapping the plainest saddle they had onto her back, along with a pair of saddle bags. One of the bags already held a few things the teen had packed a couple days ago. And after affixing her bridle, he shrugged the pack off his own back, to shove into the second bag. Was in the process of doing so when he was given an awful fright.
"Fratello?"
His heart slammed up into this throat as he whipped about on the spot, but only found a bit of relief at the bearer of the soft voice.
"Feli, don't do that, you nearly gave me a heart-attack," Lovino sighed, his words hushed but hard, like always. It didn't bother his younger brother. The slightly shorter teen just stared at him with those amber colored eyes, currently wide with a worry furrowed brow. They moved from his brother to the horse behind him, almost looking at a loss for words.
But the question Lovino didn't want to hear fell from his auburn-haired brother soon enough.
"Where...are you going, fratello?" Feliciano's stomach was dropping fast, finding his brother out here, like this. Lovino looked just as pained to be asked that question, but he hid it quickly.
Lovino turned back to what he was doing with a small huff, hoping to conceal his anxiousness. "I'm just going for a hunt, Feli. Honestly, go back to bed. It's much too late for you to just be wandering about the palace. And Ludwig will have an attack if you're not there when he checks up on you."
"A hunt? ...But it is about to storm-"
"A hunt, Feliciano," Lovino turned back about, moving to his brother and grasping both of his upper arms. The hazel eyes that met Feli's were both hard, and pleading. "A hunt, and that's all. If someone asks, just tell them I will be back in a few days."
Feliciano could hear his heart pounding in his ears, and tears were already gathering quickly to fall. But he stared at his older brother and he knew what this was. Yet, as wrong as it felt, as much as it made his heart tear, ...he understood. For which Lovino would be eternally grateful. So Feli nodded, despite how the action made those tears spill lightly over his cheeks, lips clamped in pouting frown, an upset flush coloring his cheeks.
".....Thank you, fratello," Lovino murmured softly, fighting his own frown with a very soft, strained smile. He gently wiped his brother's tears away with gloved fingers before Feli let out a soft sob. The hard hug was expected, and in a rare act of affection, Lovino comforted him softly, mostly trying to quiet him. He cooed gently, petting back hair much brighter than his own, even ignoring how tightly his brother was squeezing his neck. But time was running short.
"Feli, ...I have to go," he said softly, feeling the teen tremble against him. But Feliciano nodded smally, and very slowly started to pull back.
"Here," his shakey fingers fumbled a string of beads out of his night shirt, pulling the rosary off over his head. Lovino's lips quirked into a small smile as he accepted the gift, letting his brother place it around his neck. "And this," the younger brother insisted, taking a golden compact out of his robe pocket. Lovi recognized it, and shook his head. "No, Feli-"
"Yes," Feliciano said, as firmly as he could, pushing the compact into his brother's hands. "So you won't forget me.....in case your hunting trip runs a little...long." He said the last part softly, and so sadly, that Lovino could really only clamp his lips shut and nod. He closed his fingers around the compact, holding it to his heart as he gave another nod.
"I love you, fratello. Please, be safe," Feli managed to murmur, despite how he was choking up again. But Lovino smiled a little bit, pressing their foreheads together.
"I promise, Felici," he whispered back. "And you, stay out of trouble, yes?"
"Si."
Lovino smiled a bit more sadly, but he gently let his brother go, and stood up straight again. "Now off to bed, and don't let the guards catch you out." Despite nodding, Feliciano only backed up a few steps, watching his brother mount the patient mare, and tuck the rosary into his tunic. He backed up against the stalls so they could trot lightly by and out of the stables. But he followed quickly after.
"Lovino!" he called after.
"Shh!" Lovi turned the horse sharply, hoping the guards hadn't heard that. Though thankfully, the thunder that had been so far off in the distance before was much closer now. Feliciano stood there hugging himself, more tears slipping down his face. But he called out anyway, despite the shush.
"Grandpa loves you, Lovino! ..He does!"
Hazel eyes saddened a great deal, his hands gripping the reigns tighter. "I know," he called back. With but a moments hesitation, he turned his mare again, kicking her into a trot, then quickly into a gallop, straight out the gates. Leaving behind his younger brother, who could only stand there.
And cry.
A/N: and that's that. Much more to come, hope you guys enjoy that ride. fyi, I LOVE feedback~<3
