The first time Matt didn't answer Mello's call, Mello thought nothing of it. Maybe he fell asleep, which wouldn't have surprised him given how he often complained of his job being boring, or went to the bathroom or whatever. The next several times succeeding that, however, triggered some suspicion in him. This behavior of his was unusual, as he normally obeyed Mello and waited on him hand and foot. He considered going back to the hideout to check on him, but he didn't want to waste any time. Surely he'd pick up eventually, once he put down his stupid game for one minute. No such luck.
Eventually he reached a point where he thought he wasted enough time thinking about it and returned to the hideout. Partly out of frustration and wanting to kill him and partly out of anxiousness from thinking what could have possibly happened to him.
Nothing looked out of the ordinary when he first arrived, but he kept his guard up. An eerie silence hung in the air. Not even the sound of Matt's annoying little video game could be heard. Mello pushed the door open, one of his hands floating near his gun just in case. With the exception of the computer monitors glowing, everything was dim, but he could make out someone sitting on the couch.
“Dammit Matt,” Mello snarled, approaching the couch. His fist clenched tightly in his glove. “You better have a good explanation for sitting here and not-”
He paused as the man on the couch turned towards him and smirked. Matt's goggles covered his eyes. Matt's black gloves covered his hands. Even Matt's shirt and vest covered his upper half, but something seemed off. This definitely wasn't Matt. He looked enough like him but that evil little smile- and perhaps his hair, it looked a little too neat - gave it away. Outraged, Mello pulled out his gun and tackled the man. He pinned him down on the floor and sat on his torso. The other man seemed unfazed.
“Where the hell is Matt?!” he shrieked, the barrel of the gun pressed to the intruder's forehead. “I swear, if you've done anything to him, I will kill you.”
“Relax,” he replied flatly. “Your little pet is fine, but if you kill me you won't know where he is. I'm just here to talk to you.”
Mello backed off ever so slightly, seething at the “pet” remark. “About what? How you had the audacity to prance in here and hold my friend hostage just because you wanted something for yourself?”
Light snorted. “You mean like what you did to my sister?”
Mello froze. Sister. Hostage. Sayu Yagami. She had a brother, a brother who worked on the Kira investigation team. Some supposed genius whose father was also on the investigation team....Yagami. Light Yagami. So this was him. Already he hated him, and he was sure he would have even without having done something to Matt.
The fact Light remained so calm only fueled Mello's anger. “Now, I'll leave if you just cooperate with me-”
A harsh slap across the face interrupted Light. “Like hell I will. You probably said the same thing to L, and now he's dead.”
His eyes widened like saucers, so much that Mello could see beneath the goggles. The blonde grinned slyly and crossed his arms. “That's right, I know you. You're on the investigation team, the one L was on.”
Light wasn't expecting an answer, but asked anyway. “So you knew L?”
“I didn't say that,” Mello replied casually. “If you want to know, then you'll have to give me some information about Kira in exchange.”
Light looked at him expressionlessly. “I don't think so.”
Mello chuckled to himself. “I suppose that would make sense if you didn't want to give anyway your identity.”
Light twitched and sat up, swinging a fist across Mello's face. The latter fell backward, allowing Light to climb onto of him and pin down his shoulders. “You're suggesting I'm Kira?”
Mello smiled grimly. “Maybe I am. How do I know you're not Kira?” His knee rose up into Light's stomach, causing him to emit a grunt. “After all, L died after you arrived on the investigation team.”
“Because if I was, you'd be dead by now.” And once he had the name, Light thought, he certainly would be dead, that bastard. “And I'm trying to catch Kira like you anyway.”
“Maybe so,” -Mello's lips curving up subtly into a smile, a smile Light that made Light want to knock his teeth out-”unless you're like, say, the second Kira and only need to know my face.”
Light paused for a second in shock, his grip on Mello loosening. Enough time passed to allow Mello to thrust his knee into his stomach again, this time with more force. While Light tried to recover Mello threw him onto the floor viciously. He yanked off Matt's goggles, revealing Light's eyes. They glimmered with fury, something he'd expect of Kira. “But before we get to that, I'll start out simple: how did you get here?”
Light remained silent.
“Stubborn, are we?” Mello curled his fingers around a clump of Light's hair. His hair was too pretty, so Mello couldn't resist the overwhelming urge to ruin it. He lifted Light's head and slammed it onto the ground, then firmly holding it in place. “If you want to get out of here alive, you'll talk. I'll make this easier for you: did the Death Note have anything to do with it?”
Something told Light this guy wouldn't kill him, at least not as easily as he was making it sound. He'd compromise and diverge a little information if the other did the same. If not then he'd just have to sink to his level for now and literally beat it out of him, because this guy didn't seem like the kind to acquiesce to anyone. “Fine. Yes, it did.”
Mello paused, burning holes into the other man with his eyes. “And?”
Light took the opportunity to thrust a clenched fist upward, striking Mello's nose so hard he fell backwards. The sight was blood dribbling out of his nose made Light grin with satisfaction. Served him right. Animalistically Light jumped onto Mello, pinning his shoulders down. Then something hard rubbed against his crotch, and Light cackled sadistically.
“So you get off on this, do you?” Light asked, the power over the other adding to his own arousal.
“No, but apparently you do, what with you pinning me down like a desperate queer,” Mello hissed. He grabbed Light by the front of his shirt and brought their faces so close together their foreheads barely touched. “Now, tell me about the fucking Death Note and I won't beat you into a bloody pulp.”
“Your threats don't scare me.” Light then caught the blonde off-guard by smashing his lips into Mello's, harshly invading his mouth. Both tasted blood, not sure to whom it belonged. Mello angrily bit down on Light's tongue, eliciting a growl from him. If this was how Kira wanted to play, Mello could play along. He used to the time spent battling in the other's mouth regaining his strength, and when he finally did, he kicked Light off of him and snatched his gun. Light wobbled on his feet, leaning against a wall for support. Mello flew up against the older man and pinned up there, jabbing the gun into his forehead. Both were breathing heavy, hot breaths onto each other.
Something firm touched Mello's thigh, much to both his disgust and amusement. Grinning, Mello said, “Then maybe bribery will get somewhere with you, you little whore.” He rose a knee and ground it into Light's crotch, causing Light to grunt between his teeth. Mello's laughter grew louder and he sank his teeth into Light's neck and bite harshly. After placing a few bites on his neck, he paused and asked, “There's more than one notebook out there, isn't that right?”
Light bit down on his tongue to prevent any words or needy moans from escaping his lips. Perhaps he'd underestimated Mello; he certainly didn't expect him to know as much as he did, not judging by the character of his redheaded partner. Heat raced through his body, heading south, where Mello drew circles with his finger. The barrel of the gun pushed harder into Light's forehead, probably hard enough to leave a mark. “Answer me!”
“Yes,” Light said finally.
“Good boy,” Mello said with thick sarcasm. He slid his hand up Light's shirt, the feeling of leather against skin making Light twitch. “So you still have one too, don't you?”
“Maybe.” Light pushed away the gun and leaned forward, licking along Mello's jaw. “How do you think I found your base here?”
“I was thinking you'd, nn, tell me,” Mello said in a low voice, sounding more like a command than a request. “Someone on your team must be Kira and have an accomplice, one who can see names, right?”
“Possibly.” Eagerly Light ripped open Mello's vest while nibbling on random pieces of bare skin. “Maybe that's case with you now since you have a Death Note too.”
“Stop avoiding the subject!” Mello slapped him so hard Light's head jerked to the side. He then began hastily undoing his shirt and tossed it carelessly across the room. “You probably came here just hoping to get laid more than to talk, you pathetic little bastard.”
“You're just as pathetic as me then.” Light grinned and squeezed some of his fingers into the tight leather pants, stroking the smooth skin underneath them. He continued leaving bite marks along the blonde's neck and down to his chest. Mello growled, refusing to make any sound indicative of the pleasure he felt, but Light knew he was enjoying this.
“If you won't talk about that,” Mello said, fumbling to undo Light's belt with one hand. “Then maybe you'll tell me how L died. You had to have been there when he died.”
Light swiftly tossed his belt onto the floor once Mello had loosened it. “Kira killed him.”
“Well no shit,” Mello spat, grabbing Light's erection forcefully after shoving his pants down to his knees. “How'd he die?” The other hand dropped the gun and traveled down Light's hip.
“Heart attack...just like most of, hah, Kira's victims.”
“Figures...” Mello licked his gloved fingers and pressed them against Light's entrance, causing him to howl at the new sensation. Again he paused, looking Light in the eye. “Were you there when he died?”
“Yes,” Light admitted, his mind growing hazy with desire. “I watched him die just like the rest of the task force...I promised, hnn, to...find Kira...for him.”
“Bullshit.” Mello could have laughed but his breathing was shallow and he was relishing the sounds coming from Light. With a chuckle he pressed a finger inside Light, forcing its way into his tight body. Light suppressed a needy moan, refusing to look submissive for anyone, especially this bastard. As Mello pushed harder into him, Light's whimpers rose in pitch. “Why...didn't you, hnn, do anything...?”
Light's eyelids now half-covered his eyes. “Because...you, hah, should...know, that once, hnn, a name is written down, that it can't, mm, be erased. Why do you care anyway?”
Mello withdrew his fingers and paused as if to ponder this statement. “Perhaps...” Mello quickly peeled off his own leather pants so they fell to his ankles. “Perhaps I care...because, ahh, I...knew L.” And after that he thrust into the older man, both of them screaming and swearing and panting.
At that moment both were beginning to think more about dominating the other than what happened to Matt or Kira or anything else. Light leaned into Mello's shoulder and bit down on the sweat-covered skin so hard he thought he may have tasted blood. Mello shrieked and dug his fingers into his hip. The scream was high-pitched and almost feminine, much to Light's amusement. When the older man moved his head Mello caught him in a violent liplock, sucking on a swollen bottom lip.
“I...figured you did,” Light said as he slowly pulled away, managing a weak grin. Of course he did. He was Light Yagami after all.
Mello grunted as if he didn't believe him. “I surely...would have known...the main suspect...had I been there...with him,” the blond panted. Light took the opportunity to force himself up from the ground, his body straddling Mello's as the other man fell backward. With as much force as he could muster, Light rose his body and sent Mello further up into his hole, eliciting a hearty groan from them both.
“Of course,” Light said. At this point he'd set aside all thoughts relating to the notebook and focused on dominating the writhing man beneath him. A sweaty hand of Light's forced Mello's onto his own needy length. He smirked sinisterly as Mello bucked into him faster and faster, panting and mumbling barely coherent things that were likely about L.
It was interesting how much Light picked up on Mello just from engaging him in such an act. Blonde hair was plastered to his forehead, bruises scattered across his body, dried blood stains sticking to his mouth and neck. It was the last thing Light took in before his eyes shut and he came all over Mello's hand and chest. A feral growl escaped from his throat and not long afterwards Mello released himself inside the other man. Not much later Light stood up and reassembled himself as best as he could.
Light fished around in the pocket of his pants and threw a small object at Mello, who was sitting down and pulling his pants back on. It was a key. “You'll need that to find your...friend,” Light said. His lips curved in a barely noticeable grin, but it was still enough to make Mello want to strangle him.
“You'll pay...Kira,” Mello growled as Light left.
He heard this as he walked away but chose to ignore it. We'll see about that, Light thought while he exited the dreary building.
Most likely the blonde fool didn't know that he already had a few tricks up his sleeve. Misa had been useful to him as she was the one who drugged Matt and hid him in a room alone. He wouldn't remember her, if he even saw her that is, and she knew his face and name thanks to the shinigami eyes. It was like killing two people in one sweep of the pen. This whole confrontation with Mello was just a game, a chance for him to study the enemy, a way for him to plan his next move. And he was sure he had all he needed to succeed.
