Chapter One
Mello climbed into his car, rubbing the heel of his hand against his eye, hating himself for crying. Clicking his seat belt on, he gunned the engine before stepping harshly on the gas pedal. Gripping the wheel with both hands, everything blurring as he gritted his teeth, speeding up. Mello headed down the street he use to take as a short cut home, shaking his head, clearing the tears away completely “Stupid ass...why're you crying...” he muttered.
He kept his focus on the road ahead of him, not caring enough to pay attention to the people on the corner signaling him to pull over. Eventually, he began passing a chain of bars, idly wondering if it'd possibly help to go get wasted.
“Fuck you,” A drunken Matt muttered as he flipped off the bartender. He picked his vest off the counter and stumbled toward the front door, mumbling to himself. He shivered at the rush of cold air, wobbling down the steps. Heading towards a sidewalk, Matt looked around at his surroundings, not having a clue where he was. He silently watched the series of cars go by as he pulled his vest on. Matt, remembering the hotel where he was currently staying at was across the street, stepped out into the road, ignoring the green light
Mello blinked, completely freezing for an instant, his lips parting before swerving. He slammed the brakes, the entire car sliding to the side, blocking the man's path. Shutting the engine off and stepping out in one quick movement, the first logical thought clicking in his head 'Please don't let this be a dream.'
Matt took a step back, glaring at the bright head lights “What the fuck? Can you move your car, you're in my way.”
“M-matt...” he whispered, walking towards him, his eyes searching, taking in the all too familiar wardrobe and red hair, his eyes lingering on the goggles “Matt!” he screamed, wanting him to look over.
Matt blinked, the sound of his name making something go off in his brain. He stared intently at the man in-front of him, knowing it couldn’t be who he thought it was.
The blond inched closer, his eyes searching, standing a few feet away, scared that he was simply high again “Matt...Matt...oh God, Matt...”
Matt continued staring at him, his eyes growing wide, slowly taking in his appearance and blonde hair “M-mello...”
The older boy nodded smally, afraid that if he moved he'd vanish “Yes...Matt...Oh...God Matt...I...”
Matt took a step forward and searched his eyes frantically “Is that...really you...?”
Taking, a tentative step towards him, Mello smiled, his eyes glassing over with another wave of tears, “It...it's me Matt...remember...”
The red head moved towards him more, hoping this wasn't a drunken hallucination “I...I....M-mello...”
Mello stepped closer until they were inches away, reaching one hand out slowly, touching his cheek. “You're not a dream.” he sighed in relief.
Matt looked down at Mello's gloved hand, looking back at him “You...found me...”
Mello cupped his face, his other hand moving, touching his hair, his shoulder, lifting his hand before letting it drop, wanting to prove to himself Matt was there “You left Wammys...I...I couldn't find you...”
Matt continued gazing at him, noticing how different his whole face and body looked. “Of course I left. I couldn't stay there with-without you.”
“I...I see you still dress the same...” Mello smiled, somehow loving that he hadn't changed, even if he did despise his lack of clothing sense “I...I've been trying to find you for years...”
“Maybe we should...get out of the street...” he replied, his voice monotone, looking at the honking cars behind them.
Mello pulled his hand away, shocked, “Get in the car...” Climbing in the driver side, he reached over to open the passenger door.
Matt followed him, climbing into the seat, shutting the door with a thud.
Mello turned the dial on the radio all the way down before staring the car, “Please put your belt on...”
“Okay.” he replied, fastening his seat belt, looking around at the interior of the car, knowing that this had to have been pretty expensive
“Are...you okay with going back to my apartment... “ He glanced over at him, still not believing he was there
“Yeah, that's... fine. I'm sure it's way nice than the place I'm staying at. “ Matt laughed slightly, staring down at his hands
Mello nodded, his tires squealing, steering back straight on the road. “Matt...”
Matt looked over at him, still not understanding just how different he looked, “What?”
“How are you...”He glanced over at him for a moment, trying to remember every detail of his face
“I...I'm well...how about you...”
“Life's been okay I guess...I...God...I still can't believe after...all these years...”
“Yeah,” he looked away, “all these years.”
Mello grit his teeth, feeling like he'd said something wrong, speeding way over the limit, leather clad fingers gripping the wheel
“So, what've you been up too?”
“Working...that's pretty much it...” Mello responded.
“Oh...” Matt said, wondering what 'work' he did
“How about you...” he asked, looking over at him.
“Oh, just...moving here and there...looking for you...”
“How long have you been in this city...?”
“Two, maybe three months...” Matt shrugged, picking at the seat.
“I used to work here...moved base though...” he replied, licking his lips out of habit.
“Base?” Matt raised an eyebrow at him
“Yeah.” he shrugged like it was no big deal, “Base.”
“I see.” He looked out the front window, his eyebrows creasing “Are we almost to your place?”
“Yeah...about ten more minutes.” Mello replied, wondering if he'd done something wrong again
“Okay...” he said, going back to picking at his seat. “Nice car.”
“Thanks, it took forever for them to customize it how I wanted.”
“I'm sure it did...” He looked over at him, remembering something “Mello?”
Mello looked over “Yeah?”
“Do you still...eat chocolate?” He asked, hoping he did.
“Yeah, I have to.” he shrugged “Still addicted to games?”
“Yeah”. He looked down, thinking how idiotic and pathetic he must seem to him, “Probably more than before...”
“I started eating chocolate bars as much as possible...don't get that upset look...please...I've eaten seventeen today...”
“Seventeen?” he repeated incredulously “Wow. Guess you finally got your life time supply of chocolate you've always wanted.”
“Yeah. I guess so.” Mello smiled, “It's nice.”
“It looks like you got everything you wanted...”
Mello blinked “What's that supposed to mean...” he asked, pulling into the apartment parking lot
Matt unbuckled his seat belt. “Nothing.”
Mello creased his eyebrows together, as he shut the car off
Matt looked out the car window, staring at the tall building “The apartment building looks...nice.”
“I like nice things...” Mello shrugged, locking the car, carrying the keys in his hand, having forgotten his jacket.
Matt stepped out of the car, trying not to slam the door. He fished his cigarettes out of his pocket and lit one quickly.
Mello blinked at him, confused. He’d figured it was merely the smell of the bar on him. “You smoke?”
Matt nodded slipping the cigarette between his lips, watching him. “What, is your building non-smoking or something?”
“I don't want it in my apartment...we can wait out here till you finish...”
“Oh.” He took a series of drags for a couple more minutes before tossing it to the ground, his shoe putting it out .”There, all done.”
Mello bit the inside of his lip, nodding smally, “We’ll...we'll have to take the elevator to get there.” He took a small step forward, checking to make sure he was going to follow. Matt followed after him, placing his hands in his pockets, not being able to help but stare at his body. Once inside, the lobby Mello pressed the button, crossing his arms over his chest, waiting, weight on one foot. Matt laughed. He couldn’t believe Mello would live in an apartment that even had elevator music.
“They have to fix the box every month or so.” he smiled, staring at the new one playing annoyingly off-key piano tunes
Matt looked over at him, noticing something familiar in Mello's eyes. “And why's that?”
“I punch a hole in it when I get annoyed.” He grinned.
“That's what I thought. “ Matt chuckled, loosening up a bit “I guess some things don't change.”
“I'm still the same old, same old, just grew up a bit.” He shrugged.
“A bit?” Matt raised his eyebrow
“What?” Mello looked back at him, tilting his head to the side
“I think you've grown up more than just a bit.” he declared
“I don't think I understand...“ He replied, tucking his hair behind one ear.
“I don't see how you can't understand. I'm speaking quite clearly.”
Mello shrugged it off as the door opened, walking out, “I'm finally taller than you...”
Matt followed after him, “You're wearing boots.”
“These...barely have a heel to them... “ He shrugged once more, a selfcouncious habit.
“I guess.” He looked down at his boots, his eyes working all the way up to his ass
Mello unlocked the door with shaky hands, revealing an almost barren apartment “Do you want any coffee...?”
Matt stepped inside, blinking around at the huge, empty place “Sure.”
Mello walked past the coffee table stacked with papers and a laptop, couch, and tv, the only things in the living room. Heading towards the kitchen, he asked, “How do you take it?” Starting the coffee maker.
Matt laughed, the tone slightly on edge, walking into the kitchen. “Just black will be fine.”
