Chapter 1

It was a rainy night. Kai Toshiki was walking down the alley alone with an umbrella in his hand. He is a high school boy of 16, with light brown hair. As he walked, he found a girl crying on the streets. She was soaking wet due to the rain.

“Are you ok?” Kai approached the girl. As she turned, he realized that he recognizes her.

“Kai! What are you doing here?” The girl wiped tears off her face after she saw Kai.

“I was on the way home when I saw you. Misaki, are you ok? What happened to you?” Kai was concerned about her. Tokura Misaki was much like him in more ways than he could care to admit. She is 16 as well with light purple hair. She lost her parents in a car accident. Kai lost his parents too.

“I was walking when some thugs came up and stole my Vanguard deck. They pushed me and I sprained my ankle.” Misaki explained the situation to Kai.

“I think I know who you might be talking about. But we can’t find those thugs now. It’s too risky.”

Kai helped Misaki off the ground and held her by the waist to make sure she doesn’t fall.

“Thank you. But what should we do?” Misaki blushed slightly at Kai’s actions and tried to steady herself.

“We have to wait till morning to meet with them. But for now, you can come home with me first. I live nearby. Can you walk?”

Misaki tried to walk but it was pointless as the pain was terrible. When she tried to move even 1 step, she almost fell over. Kai grabbed her hand just in time before she fell.

“I guess that would be a no.” Kai smiled at her. She smiled back and she felt her face was getting hotter.

“Come on. It’s raining. We don’t want you to catch a cold. However, since you can hardly walk, let me carry you.” Misaki climbed onto Kai’s back and she held him tightly with 1 hand clutching his umbrella.

As they arrived at his house, he put her down gently on the couch.

“I’ll be right back.” Kai left for the kitchen and Misaki was scouting the room. It was a plain apartment. But it does not seem like there is anyone else living here with him.

Kai came back with an ice pack and a towel.

“Let me help you with your ankle. We need to put ice on that and you need to stay off your ankle.”

Kai lifted Misaki’s left leg to examine her ankle. It was bruised and slightly swollen. He was gentle with her. Something she would have never thought he was. But it seems like there is always more than meets the eye to Kai.

“Ok. I think that should do the trick for now. Let me go get you some dry clothes and some water so you can clean up. Why not you wait in my spare room?”

Misaki grabbed the towel and walked towards the spare room with Kai leading the way. The pain was better, but it still hurts to walk.

“Here’s my spare room. No one stays here with me. So you can use this room for the time being. So you make yourself comfortable while I go get you something to drink.”

Kai left the room and Misaki got changed the dry clothes which he already left in the room. She limped towards the dresser and saw a picture of Kai with his parents. They looked happy.

When the door opened, limped back towards the bed with difficulty. Kai helped her towards the bed.

“You should not be moving around so much.” Kai covered her in the blanket and sat down next to her on the bed. He suddenly realized that she was not wearing any under clothing. He turned away, blushing a little.

Misaki realized the same thing that he did, so she covered herself up with the blanket as well.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to look.”

Kai looked shy and embarrassed by his actions. Misaki did not think that Kai was a shy person. Just like how she was surprised that he was so gentle with her leg.

“It’s ok. Don’t worry about it. So, this house belongs to you?”

She tried to change the subject because she doesn’t want it to get awkward.

“My parents actually. They own this house. But since they are gone, I live here alone now. I don’t have guests much as you can tell.”

Kai was shocked that he told her so much. Misaki sensed that she might have asked too much.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to pry into your personal life. I just feel surprised. You always seem so calm and collected outside. I didn’t know your life was so complicated. But if you are uncomfortable, don’t say anything. I understand.”

Kai smiled at her. He looked into her blue eyes. She smiled back at him. He felt his heart pounding hard in his chest. He swallowed hard and looked away.

“I don’t know why. But I find it very easy to talk to you. I just never got the chance to with everything going on.” He told her.

“I am glad you do. Because you can always talk to me.”

Misaki felt like she is taking a huge leap of faith. But she wanted to know Kai better. She could also feel her heart pounding hard in her chest.

He turned around and looked into her eyes again. Before they realized it, they were leaning in closer for a kiss.
