Author's note:
I completely made this up, off the top of my head... I wonder if anyone has ever thought of this?
There aren't any spoilers, since this took place before the Kira Cases or The Los Angles B.B. Murder Cases.
And, oh my goodness, this is totally unfinished.
Would you do me a favor though, and tell me what you think? I'm not really sure whether I should carry on or not...
I hope you enjoy reading this~! :3
CHAPTER ONE: Collaboration.
"L," the electronic voice said, lacking emotion. "How about we work together on a case?"
L paused for a moment to think about that. He was already one of the third best detectives in the world. He didn't really need to challenge his rivals.
But...
There wasn't any cases that particularly interested him and this sounded like it might be fun. He flicked the small stack of sugar cubes in front of him, causing them to topple over. Just like his rival would.
He clicked the button that enabled him to be heard, "Well then, Deneuve. I accept. I believe this may be... Interesting."
"Alrighty then," The electronic voice sounded cheered by the idea, and L swore he heard a faint little chuckle. "I'll send you everything you need to know."
Click.
He was gone.
L chewed on his thumbnail. Was this really the best idea? What if Deneuve's intelligence challenged even that of his own...? No, that would be a very hard thing to do and besides, he hadn't had any fun in ages. A small smile spread across his face and he began building a new stack of sugar cubes.
He was going to win this one.
****
"L."
"Deneuve." L was mildly surprised at receiving yet another call.
"Did you read through the information I sent you?"
"...Yes," That was fairly obvious.
Another faint chuckle, no mistaking it this time. "Oh, good. I was thinking that we should send betas."
"You mean...To meet each other?"
Now it was the other detective's turn to sound doubting, "...Yes. That's fairly obvious. I thought you were supposed to be smart?"
A sudden anger flared up in L and he kept quiet, seething.
Deneuve laughed loudly, a sound that sounded odd with the voice scrambler, "I was just kidding, L. I don't doubt your intelligence for a moment."`
"Fine then," L said his words slowly, deliberately, trying to calm down. "I'll send my beta to a location of your choice." That way, he could find out what was deemed a suitable location in Deneuve's book, a little snippet of information that he was sure would come in handy.
As if seeming to read his mind, Deneuve answered, "Hmm... Actually...Could you choose for me? I'm kind of busy at the moment." His tone of voice reminded L of that of a child. An annoying child. The direction of his thoughts surprised him a little; he'd never really had an opinion on other people, least of all children, but he'd now decided that he disliked them.
"Fine," L snapped, which was a rare occurrence. "What country are you currently in? Or rather," He added stealthily, convinced that Deneuve would try to trick him, "Where are you going to be in four days?"
"Four days? That quick?" The voice sounded energized and L heard a...Small...Squeal? This was getting very odd. Even for L.
"I'll be in London," Deneuve said before L had a chance to think of anything else.
"O.K. One of the conference rooms in Oxford University it is. I'll deal with it."
"Do you need plane tickets?"
"Of course not. I can handle that myself."
Click.
L sat in his chair for a while, replaying the conversation they had over and over again, looking for clues. The only thing that he deduced from that was, number One, Denuve was like a child, annoying and convinced that he was correct, number Two, he must not, in any circumstances to be underestimated. There was no way L was sending someone to meet him in his place. He wanted to meet his rival face to face and he had no doubt that Deneuve would be thinking the same.
****
When L checked his email he'd received a message from an unknown sender marked, 'IMPORTANT.'
No more voice scramblers.
~Deneuve.
L didn't quite know what to make of that. He felt a hand on his shoulder, and looked up to find Watari.
"Charles," He said. "Our flight is boarding soon."
L shut the laptop gently and gave it to Watari to carry. He jumped up, stretching.
"Let's go."
****
L's head peered around the door, scanning for Deneuve. Not that he'd be able to recognize him of course, it was just a habit.
"Do come in."
L stepped gingerly into the room, the high, girly voice had took him by surprise.
He suppressed a gasp as the appearance of the young woman sitting waiting for him sunk in.
She was wearing a white short sleeved tee-shirt with a chunky black belt fastened around it, with faded black jeans and big, chunky goth boots. The white of her tee-shirt was slightly startling in contrast to her russet skin and thick black hair made it's way past her shoulders. Her face was where L's eyes lingered the longest. It was excruciatingly beautiful, big dark eyes framed with thick lashes, full lips and a cute, small nose.
It gave him a strange feeling he could not explain.
Deneuve suppressed a gasp as the appearance of the young man standing in the doorway waiting for her sunk in.
He was stood fairly awkwardly, his back slightly hunched over. His hair stuck out at odd angles and his clothes were plain. It made her wonder if he'd just threw on the first things he saw; it certainly looked like it. His face was were Deneuve's eyes lingered the longest. It could have been a pretty face if not for the dark circles under his eyes and the distant look to his pretty dark eyes.
It gave her a strange feeling she could explain, and tried desperately to push it out of her head.
All of this thinking had took place in a matter of seconds and neither of them had responded physically.
Deneuve stood up slowly, walking towards L, and shut the door behind him quietly.
She took a couple of steps back and offered a hand for L to shake,"Hello. I'm Makenna, pleased to meet you. You are?"
It didn't feel odd for either of them to be introducing themselves with aliases; they had done it so many times before.
"Charles." L took her hand and shook it gently, his eyes boring into hers.
They stood like that for a while before Makenna finally offered him some tea.
They talked for a while, Makenna's hair constantly falling into her face.
"If you don't mind me asking, why would you choose a drug case? I'm sure someone with your abilities would solve this case with ease."
"L," Makenna leaned towards him and brushed her hair from her face for the tenth time since he'd first met her. Wait. He was counting?
Yes. Of course he was. He was gathering information on Deneuve, gathering as much as he could.
"L..." She repeated, looking up to stare at him with distinct curiosity. "Could I tell you some things about myself?"
He plopped two more sugar cubes into his tea and nodded slightly.
"Well," She rocked gently back and forth, seeming to be thinking of the answer to her own question. "There are things that I'm afraid of."
After a long pause L answered, "There are things that everybody is afraid of." He nibbled his thumbnail and looked up at her with his black eyes that didn't seem to reflect any light. "But since you just said that now I'm assuming you are going to tell me your fears."
