Cat and Mouse
Koza sat in her chair trying her best not to squirm under the scrutiny of the information broker. He sat across from her with an expression that oozed smug superiority. She wondered how she had found him charming when they had first met; attractive even.
Izaya Orihara was indeed handsome on the outside, but inside he was rotten like a wormy apple.
Yet she was the one deemed monster.
“Bakeneko, also known as a ghost cat, or changing cat, these creatures are said to be able to take the form of humans and are particularly fond of taking on the forms of beautiful women.” He spoke as if reading from an article. “So, is that all you are, a cat playing pretend?”
She clenched her fists in her lap. “I’m not pretending at anything. I was born like this. This is my face. I am me.”
“You are you. But you are a monster.” His grin was sharp and cruel, when she flinched at the word. “No matter how human you look or act, that’s what you’ll always be deep down inside, isn’t it?”
“That’s not true.” She denied firmly. She detested violence. She’d never purposefully harmed anyone in her life, but monster was a title she’d been born with. Her mother had been one; a bakeneko pure and true that had seduced her human father to birth her then killed him. But Koza was a born pacifist to her mother’s disappointment.
“If you’re not a monster, then why hide I wonder? Perhaps it has something to do with a little town by the name of-”
“People are irrational and scare easy." She cut him off. "It would just be easier if no one ever knew. Izaya you’re the only one who knows what I am, I’m begging you. Ikebukuro is a new start for me a new life.” She realized she was trying to appeal to the person she had thought he was when she had first come to this city. She changed her approach.
“You deal in information so I’ll pay you. I’ll pay you not to give this information to anyone.”
His grin was positively wicked as he stood up and walked around his desk to sit on the edge in front of her.
“Koza, Koza, Koza… I’m not sure you can afford that. You’d have to pay me to keep that juicy information from every individual in the city. I’m sure any one of them could be willing to pay good money to see a real life demon cat. Let me see those eyes again.”
He suddenly reached out like he was going to grab her and she jerked back instinctively with a hissing intake of breath. Her normally round pupils contracted to narrow slits briefly before returning to their circular forms.
“Ooh, scary.” Izaya leaned back again and crossed his arms loosely in front of him. “How about I’ll cut you a deal, since we’re friends?”
Koza personally thought a rabid dog would make a better friend than Izaya Orihara, but kept her opinion to herself and eyed him suspiciously. “What kind of deal?”
“Since you can’t afford to keep this information from all of Ikebukuro, I’ll let you pick just three people.” He held up three fingers. “Three people you would never ever want to find out what an unnatural creature you are.”
For a while she said nothing; merely stared at him with a helpless look. He didn’t understand. She just wanted to live without fear. Without fear of what people would do to her if they knew and fear of what they might force her to do to them.
Just like back then…
“Well, Koza?”
“Dennis…” she began.
“Ah, the owner of Russia Sushi, who gave you a job when no one else would. I suppose at this point he’s become like a father figure to you and you couldn’t bear the thought of him hating you.” Izaya rattled off in his trademark mocking, know-it-all tone of voice, “So my guess is your next pick will be….”
“…Simon..”
“Indeed it is. Pacifistic Simon shares your nonviolent beliefs, but what would he think of a man-eating demon cat? Who knows though, maybe they have those in Russia.”
By this point Koza was red in the face. “Enough! I was stupid to think I’d get any help or sympathy from you.”
She tried to stand up, but he quickly pushed her back down in her seat. “You have my word I won’t tell anyone of them about your secret, but only if you finish the list. I have a feeling I know who the last person is, but I want to hear it straight from your own lips.”
“You’re lying, you just want to debase me further.” She tried to stand again, only to be once more pressed back down, this time he remained close enough to inhibit her from trying to stand again. “I helped you once before remember?”
He had helped her, almost a year ago when she first came to the city. He had helped her with multiple things one of which had in fact been introducing her to Simon, she hadn’t forgotten, which was why she’d been so surprised to learn of his true twisted nature. She internally struggled to decide whether to trust him or not, before realizing she had no choice.
He knew what she was and even knew what she had done in her old town. Whether she gave him another name or not probably wouldn’t even make a difference, but if it could, if there was a chance...
She mumbled the third name almost unintelligibly, but Izaya caught it, because it was exactly the name he suspected.
“Shizuo Heiwajima,” He smirked and finally backed away from her again, “the strongest man in Ikebukuro."
Of course he had noticed. He'd been keeping tabs on her from the first moment she suddenly appeared in the city, naive, lost, without a friend in the world or a history to speak of. Izaya had to dig it up on his own, which had taken quite a bit of time a resources, but had been well worth it when he stumbled upon her dark secret.
And in the meanwhile she began to grow close to Shizuo of all people. It was the icing on the cake full of delicious irony and possibilities.
"You know some people consider Shizu-chan a monster too, are you sure you don’t want him to know he has kin? You two can spawn little monster babies together!”
Koza’s face turned bright red again. She was sure her attraction to the tall blonde was one sided and he would never view her like that to her dismay, but she wanted him least of all to see her as a monster. He had inhuman strength, but he was still human. She wasn’t even that. “Just promise me they won’t find out!”
“First let’s discuss payment.”
“You said you’d cut me a deal.”
“Right, a deal, I never said I’d do it for free.” Izaya was smug as a snake inside. He had her right where he wanted her. He walked over to his couch as sat down, gesturing for her to come over as well. She refused at first, but relented when she saw he wouldn’t continue until she joined him.
She sat down on the far end away from him. She gave a small sniff and idly rubbed her nose. “How much do you want?”
“Not much; just a kiss.”
Her silent shock was proof enough that she’d not expected that request in the slightest.
“But you- you don’t even- ?”
“Find attraction in women? I assure you I do; attractive women are everywhere, its attractive interesting women that are hard to find and even you cannot deny that you are at least that. Nothing more than an acute fascination.”
“You sure know how to flatter a girl.” She spat sarcastically, while taking note of how he had decreased the distance between them in that span of time. Even with her above average 5'7" height he loomed over her, trapping her against the chair arm. Her pupils dilated and she gave another sniff.
“I’ll even make it easy for you.” He said, shrinking the rest of the distance until they were almost nose to nose. “Just pretend I’m Shizu-chan. In fact, I want you to kiss me just like how you’d kiss him.”
Koza was shaking with a myriad of emotions; shock, shame, outrage, arousal, intense confusion, more emotions than she could identify. Why did he smell so good?
“It’s a small price.” He said leaning forward until his warm breath fanned over her lips. “Close your eyes, I’m Shizuo.”
Her eyelids fluttered shut of their own accord and his lips were on hers, soft and warm and not awful at all. At the back of her mind a million miles away she realized it was her first kiss. In her head, she pictured Shizuo; his dyed blonde hair and brown eyes. The first night she met him he had saved her life, though he didn’t realize it at the time, or even remember her at all in their next encounter after that.
It took him two more occasions before he remembered, but she could still recall the elation she felt when he said her name for the first time.
She moved her lips against his, just like she’d done a hundred times in heady dreams that left her unfulfilled and wanting in the morning.
How many times did she speculate on how his lips might actually feel against her own? The warm tip of his tongue against her teeth was a surprise for her, but she allowed him access with only the briefest moment of hesitation. She always wanted to tell him how sexy he looked in that bartender getup and those blue tinted sunglasses, but those kinds of thoughts never made it past her lips.
His tongue tangled around hers as his motions became needier and his hands crept up her body, pressing her further into the sofa. She moaned as his kissing increased in fervor and a warm hand slipped underneath her shirt to cup her breast.
She imagined he’d smell like the cigarettes he was constantly smoking, but this smell was simply intoxicating. Her hand came up to run her fingers through his hair when she suddenly heard a click. Her eyes reopened, and she was jolted back into reality by the crown of black hair and the clear cruel eyes staring at her.
Her mind was still foggy, her senses felt simultaneously dulled and sharpened. Her body felt incredibly hot.
Her still dilated eyes drifted from Izaya’s smirk to the hand he was currently holding away from them, and in that hand he clutched his cell phone, turned in a way that made it painfully obvious what he’d just done.
He stood up from the couch and looked at the photo he’d just taken, clicking buttons on the touch pad. His horribly satisfied expression said it all.
She stood up and reached for the device, snatching it out of his hands far too easily.
“Don’t bother trying to delete it, I already sent it to my email.”
The woman in the photo was a stranger to Koza. A girl lost in ecstasy, fingers entwined in Izaya’s hair pressed flush against him. What had she done?
Her head seemed to be clearing now and a sick feeling settled in the pit of her stomach. Why did she…?
What was wrong with her?
The phone screen began to crack in her clenched hand, before the screen turned completely white then black and the smart phone snapped in two.
“Now that wasn’t very nice, you owe me a new phone.”
She dropped the pieces, spun around, and grabbed Izaya by the collar of his shirt, though he didn’t look the least bit worried.
Her eyes were slits once more and she growled baring her needle sharp fangs. She could kill him right here. Her mother would be so proud of her if she did. The beast buried deep down inside of her purred at the thought of tasting his blood. Her knuckles flexed and her claws extended, tearing at the cloth of his collar.
“I can see why you wouldn’t want people to see you like this, you really are a freak.” The words were spoken with mocking amusement.
No!
She immediately released his shirt and backed away from him by a step; everything from her posture to facial expression cried defeat.
“Once I get a new phone, I’ll be keeping you on my speed dial. If you’re not in front of my desk within an hour of my calls I’ll be sending that picture to Shizu-chan.”
He could tell she was doing everything in her power not to cry in front of him. He imagined at this point she was feeling very stupid, gullible, helpless, trapped. The sociopath reveled in the feeling of superiority it gave him.
The last look she shot him was pure venom, before she retreated from his apartment in every sense of the word.
When he was alone once more he fell back onto his sofa, reached down and grabbed a plastic cylinder from underneath the couch. Idly, he tossed the empty container from hand to hand before reading the bold print on the front.
Nepetalactone
His laughter echoed around the large apartment.
