Disclaimer: i don't own pokemon and i don't make money from it. |
A little girl about three years old sits staring out the window, the sky is darkened by gray with little fat rain droplets splattering against the ground. Every now again in the distance lightning would strike the ground and flocks of Pidgey could be seen taking to the sky. “Stupid birds...it's too wet to fly.” She sighs watching the road before her house, waiting for a certain pontiac to pull into the driveway. “He's late...like always...”
“Maddison, give your father a break, he's probably busy working.”
The girl pouted “You don't sound so sure yourself mama.” For the last few days her father had been coming home later and later. Sometimes, she would be in bed and wouldn't get to see him until the next day. What could be keeping him away? His mean boss? Maybe a secret affair? Or, is he really working? Maybe he's just avoiding the little girl with bright brown eyes. “Is daddy mad at me mama? Is that why he won't come home on time?”
Her mother sighed setting a dishes he had been scrubbing away at in the sink. “Come here Maddie.” The little girl was reluctant to move form her spot but she pushed herself away and joined her mother in the kitchen. Her mother, Olivia, lifted her up on to the counter with an 'umph' sound and looked her in those sweet big round eyes. “Maddie,” she spoke softly “You know your father could never be mad at you. He loves you far too much to ever be made at you, when your were born you should have seen the grin on his face, he's never been more proud. So to answer your question; No, he isn't mad and you and I don't think he ever will be.”
“How'd you get to be so wise mama?”
Olivia giggled and kiss her daughters forehead, while sweeping a lock of her soft orange curls back. “Years and years of practice.” Just as their little bonding session had ended the front door swung open and slammed. “Olivia? Maddie? Where are you girls?” Before they could answer the man entered the kitchen looking extatic. He was drenched form head to toe, brown hair clinging to his face. “Some storm that's going on out there. IF I didn't know any better I'd say it was good'ol Raikou himself!” He laughed embracing his wife and giving her a loving kiss. The display of affection brought a small smile to Maddie's face. How could she ever think her father was having an affair? He loved her mother far too much as to ever do something as silly as that. “Pretty decent so far, Kim gave me the day off so Maddie and I got to do some mother and daughter bonding.”
Maddison's mother worked as a temporary nurse for the Virdian City Hospital, she's one of the few people who choose to treat people instead of pokemon. Usually when her mother is working she stays with the friendly neighbor, Delia Ketchum; A nice woman. “That sounds like fun.” Her father, Michael, smiled walking over to what he considered a gift from the Gods themselves. When Michael found out Olivia was pregnant he was over joyed to be having a child. Gender didn't matter, just as long as the baby was healthy, even so he would have loved it unconditionally. Then, she was born, perfection at it's best. He knew from that minute on that she would forever hold a special place in his heart, and he would do whatever it was to protect her. Now, when he looked into the innocent eyes he could see the sadness he was causing her, and that's why he was going to make it up to her tonight. “Hey, Maddie follow me.”
She sighed following him into the livingroom. Maddie plopped down on the couch sinking back into the soft material with a agitated expression on her face. “You're late...again...”
“I know sweetie.” He frowned “But I have a surprise that I think you're going to appreciate.” Diggin trough his brown over coat he pulled out to small circular spheres, the top have were painted red while the bottom half was painted white. A black line divided the two halves while centered in the middle of the line was a big white button. “What is it daddy?” Maddie didn't know much about pokemon, she could identify a few like Caterpie and Rattata and the occasional Pidgey but that was the extent o her pokemon knowledge. “These, Maddie, are pokeballs. You use these to catch pokemon with, just like daddies.”
She awed rolling the little spheres in her tiny hands. “Do they have pokemon in them right now?” Michael shook his head “No, but tomorrow, you and I are going to fix that.”
“What do you mean daddy?”
“We are going to catch you a pokemon.”
Maddie barely got any sleep that night because she was so excited to catch a pokemon. She only knew of a few but she knew she didn't want those kind, they were boring. When she woke up in the morning her mother dressed her in a warm pink fluffy sweater with jeans and her boots. Since it rained yesterday it would be wet, chilly and muddy outside. Unfortunately Olivia wouldn't be able to join them on the trip because she was called in for an emergency, of course she was upset but Maddie knew it was important. “Ready?” He dad asked dressed in a black long sleeved shirt and jeans. It was weird to see her dad dressed so casually since he was always in his work clothes. He had taken this day of just for her and she'd be lying if she said it didn't excite her. “Ready!” She saluted running outside and jumping into a puddle. Michael laughed tossing her over his shoulder “What are you doing silly girl? Are you trying to get yourself sick?” She giggled flailing in his arms like a Magikarp out of water. Michael buckled her in the back seat making sure she was nice and secure before climbing into the driver seat and buckling himself in. He left the radio off, it may technically be spring but it was still cold enough out to have some ice on the roads, and he didn't wan to risk anything. Michael figured they'd go to route 1, when coming home form work he could sometimes spot a Vulpix that's wandered into the area or a Mewoth could be seen perched in a tree. Would Maddie like one of those pokemon? He hoped so.
Arriving on route 1 Michael pulled the car over on the side of the road and let Maddie free of her restraints. On hand with him he had one pokeball, the pokeball inside had been his starter and was one of the few that decided to stay by his side even after his years of traveling ended. “Come on out Tochi!” Maddie watched the sphere like her own expand and pop open with a burst of what almost looked like white lightning, the lightning light started to take shape of a pokemon whose name she always forgot. He was a big orange dog with black stripes and cream colored fur, she remembers when her daddy had the day off he would take her for rides on the giant mutt. “What kind of pokemon is this again, daddy?”
“Arcanine,” he stated proudly “He's a fire-type.”
“Wow!”
Michael started into the grass keeping hold of Maddie's hand the whole time. “Watch for any sign of movement Maddie, you to Tochi.” The giant canine gave a bark of understanding as he searched the grass. Maddie searched to even though she had no clue what she was doing. As the hours seemed to fly by they had no luck in finding anything that Maddie was interested in, that is until she caught sight of rustling in the taller grass. The curious three year old swatted trough the grass to find a strange pokemon she had never seen before. The pokemon was laying on it's side panting heavy, it looked like it was in pain. The pokemon was black and orange, it looked at Maddie with such a pleading expression. “Daddy! Daddy! Help!” Maddie yelled kneeling down by the pokemon, she stroked it's soft fur and horns protruding from it's head. ”Maddie!” Michael screamed noticing his daughters disappearance. He tore trough the grass and saw her small frame crouched over, in his mind he feared she had been attacked by a Rattata. “Are you okay sweetie?! Tell daddy what hurts!” Maddie giggled “I'm fine, but this pokemon is hurt.”
He had just noticed the poemon his daughter so tenderly petted. A Houndoom. Strange, they weren't very common in Kanto as they were from Johto. He kneeled next to his daughter and looked the pokemon over. She didn't appear to be injured physically, her big belly gave him a clue to what was really going on. “She's not hurt Maddie.” He smiled “She's got a belly full of eggs.”
“Eggs?”
“Mhm, pokemon and human births are two very different things Maddie.” Michael felt the dogs stomach getting a low growl from the soon to be mother. “We should get her to a pokemon center right away.” Convincing Houndoom to let him catch her was more difficult than he thought, the mother was very protective and didn't trust Michael for some reason but she did Maddie. Finally, Maddie was able to convince her and Michael was able to catch her. So she didn't have a trainer? Could she have been abandoned? It's not rare to find an abandoned pokemon wondering around. They drove to the nearest pokemon center which was in Viridian City, the whole time Maddie clutched the pokeball in her hands and chatted to it. Scientists believe that pokemon can still communicate even with in their pokeball, so maybe that Houndoom could hear her? Maybe she couldn't. Arriving Michael picked Maddie up and the two entered the center. A couple trainers, experienced and unexperienced gave them some funny looks while others nodded at them or waved. There was a variety of tourists in their healing up their pokemon before heading out or people checking out rooms. Michael strode up to the front desk pushing some noisy people out of the way. “Ay' buddy you can't just cut!”
“Excuse me,” Michael said ignoring the group of kids “Nurse?”
“How can I help you sir?”
“My daughter and I found a Houndoom and she's well...pregnant and about to have her pups??”
The nurses eyes widened as Michael handed the pokeball over. “We'll have your pokemon looked at imediately.” Maddie watched as she rushed back with the Houndoom. “Daddy is Kanari going to be alright?” She shed, small tears forming in her eyes. “Kanari? You named her?”
“Yea.”
What is she had a trainer? How could he possibly give this pokemon up when his daughter has gotten so attached? Michael took Maddie's hand and sat down in one of the many chairs. “Maddie,” he sighed “Houndoom-”
“Kanari.”
“Kanari,” he chuckled “May already have a trainer. You know this don't you? Wild Houndoom just don't appear out of nowhere, let alone pregnant ones. I just don't want you to get your hopes up in case of you know.” Maddie frowned “So I can't keep her?”
“Possibly..”
They spent a couple hours in silence, Maddie sat there playing with the empty pokeballs every so often asking about Kanari when the nurse would come by. Finally, at four-five hours they were allowed to see Kanari.Maddie rushed into the room and jumped on the bed where Kanari was resting, the Houndoom eagerly greeted her licking her cheek. “Are you okay Kanari? Did they hurt you?” She whispered wrapping her arms around the dogs neck. “Where are her eggs?” Michael asked the friendly blond haired nurse. “How are the eggs?”
“The eggs are just fine.” She smiles “They have the potential to hatch within a couple of hours.” Michael sighed in relief, the eggs would be ok. “Do you know if she had a previous trainer? I mean, to just find her there was kinda strange.”
“We believe this is one of those cases of abandonment. From what I can gather, her former owner found out she was pregnant and decided he didn't want them, or her anymore. I'm assuming her trainer was male, considering she's not very friendly towards the male species.”
“Miss? Can I see the eggs?”
The kind nurse agreed bringing the eggs out, they were in funny looking glass cases. Again, curiousness got the best of the child as she lifted the glass top. Michael was afraid she would hurt the eggs but the nurse didn't seem to mind one bit nor did Kanari. “Beautiful,” she gasped “Are there really pokemon inside?”
“Yes,” the nurse giggled “Touch it, maybe you can feel some movement.”
Maddie squeeled and went to reach out to the ashy black egg splotched with orange dots. In her excitement she tipped the case and the egg landed right in her arms. “Whoa,” she gasped as the egg started to glow “What's happening?”
“It's hatching.”
The glowing light lasted a whole minute before it dimmed down. There wasn't an egg, instead in Maddie's arms was a small black pup with cream fur. Michael had never witnessed pokemon birth before so this was all knew to him, they looked so different without their bones and little skull cap. Like the good little trooper she is Maddie marched over to Kanari and gently placed the pup on the bed. The pup cried and sniffed around for it's mother. Kanari stood up shaking herself off, out stretched her paw and pushed the pup over so it could feed. “Sachi.”
“Excuse me?” the adults asked in unison. “Sachi, her name is Sachi.” Maddie smiled petting the feeding pup. “Do you like that name Kanari?”
“Hound!”
“Yay!” Maddie cheered, she rushed over to the other egg and lifted the glass case. This egg was black with red splotches. She sat down next to Kanari and plopped the egg onto a pillow. “I'm go to be the very first one to see this little guy hatch.”
The next day the eg did hatch, into a black fox like pokemon with red paws. The nurse said the pokemon was a Zorua and that it was typically onlt found in the Unova region, so that means Kanari's mate must have been a pokemon called Zoroark. Maddie had no clue who they were but she knew that Kanari had the cutest babies ever. Over the next few weeks Maddie and Michael visited the pups and Kanari, Maddie decided to name the Zorua Yoru. The baby pokemon had grown considerably, now they looked what they were supposed to, only smaller. Michael had also made the decision to adopt Kanari and her pups seems how her previous owner wanted nothing to do with her anymore.
“Daddy?” Maddie suddenly asked on their usual trip to the center “Yes, sweetie?”
“Thanks.”
“For what?”
“If it weren't for you, we would have never found Kanari.”
He smiled “Don't you mean you? You're the one who found her, in a way I think it was fate.”
“Fate?”
“Yea it was just..meant to be.”
Over the years Maddie, Yoru and Sachi had grew up together becoming a family. Maddie's love for pokemon also bloomed over the years, after that day she decided she wanted to become a pokemon trainer, just like her daddy.
(I'm terribly sorry if some things were rushed and didn't make sense, I wasn't sure how to explain Kanari's birth properly. Hopefully you got the point. Well, see you in the next chapter; All Grown Up.
