BAD END

Chapter 1: Planetfall
They had lost.
It was unthinkable, but the Precure had failed. After all their battles, all their hardships, all their struggles to protect the world, it had come to naught. And they had been so close to victory… the final battle with Emperor Pierrot had been almost decided, seconds from its end, but then…
THREE DAYS AGO
EARTH
The shape hung over the land, blotted out the entire sky. Pierrot had become nothing but a swirling black void that threatened to engulf the barren and deserted Earth, to drown everything in endless despair… and all that remained to stand against him were the six tiny lights, six young girls, five humans and one transformed fairy. Clad in shining robes and golden halos, glowing with holy power, all had tears in their eyes. Even if this last, desperate effort were successful, they knew the price of their victory. They knew that this was the only way. Winning this fight and restoring the Earth meant that their worlds would be parted forever…
Still, though her eyes were wet, Cure Happy smiled back at her dear friends. “Come on, everyone. Let’s go.”
The other five nodded. And together they rose off the ruined ground, spreading their feathered wings… In a burst of power they ascended as one, like a golden comet in reverse, flying higher and higher, breaking through the atmosphere and into the starry expanse of space. The center of the void that was Pierrot bellowed defiance at them, his massive burning red eyes narrowing, his titanic mouth opening miles wide, wider, wider still, big enough to swallow the planet whole.
The Precure drew their weapons, the flaming Princess Candles that shone with multicolored light. One last attack, with all their hearts. For all their loved ones, for their homes, for all of humanity…
And then, in the very center of Pierrot’s great red mouth, something blossomed. An even deeper blackness than the one that formed the body around it. Something blacker than black…
“Huh?” said Cure Happy, looking down briefly.
“Happy, you must keep yourself focused!” shouted Cure Beauty off to her right.
Happy shook her head. “Right! Everyone, all together…!”
Flames bloomed at the point of their V-formation, its radiance spreading over them, gradually taking the shape of a magnificent fiery phoenix, far larger than ever before. The great bird pumped its wings, once, twice, then tucked them close to its body as it gathered speed, a blazing arrow to pierce the center of the darkness…
… and then…
The flames dissipated as the six of them slammed into something solid and unyielding with bone-shattering force. A wall. There was something like a glass wall in space, separating them from Pierrot…
An immense hand emerged from the void and hovered over them, spreading its continent-sized fingers wide. Too stunned by the inexplicable collision to fight back, they could only watch as it descended upon them, making as if to crush them in its grip like bugs…
Then, the silence of space was broken by two sounds.
The first was an agonized scream, a sound of shock and pain and anger.
The second was laughter.
As the Precure watched in horror, Pierrot’s nebulous body was consumed… the dark thing in the center of his mouth overtook him, choking the Emperor of Evil in thousands of miles of pitch black tendrils, like a virulent cancer. In seconds, they could see nothing of him but his vaguest outlines, and even those were fading as the tendrils broke him down, bit by bit.
And in the center of that choking mass, a violet flower rose, its petals spreading open. In the center of the blossom, arms raised in victory, howling with maniacal laughter, was someone that should have been dead, someone they had seen melt himself into Dark Paint for the sake of his Emperor, someone who grinned up at them where they floated frozen in shock. A harlequin in purple and white, flamboyant and colorful but unmistakably sinister… the eyes hidden behind the figure’s white mask shone blood red.
Joker.
“Thank you, Precure!” The harlequin’s tone bubbled with his mocking laughter, his voice somehow perfectly audible even in the emptiness of space, as if he were right next to them. “You distracted my dear Emperor just long enough for me to prepare my lovely surprise…”
Cure Happy strained to right herself, gritting her teeth. Her body felt sluggish, as if a great weight were pressing on her from all sides. “Joker…! How…?! Why?!”
Joker wagged his clawed finger. “Really, now! What’s the point of having a world of perfect despair if I’m not around to enjoy it, hmmm? Non, non, I just had to come back… Pierrot’s plans for you were so boring. He simply wanted to destroy you. That wouldn’t have been any fun at all…”
“Wh… what are you doin’ to him?” Cure Sunny’s words shook with uncharacteristic dread as she floated close to Happy’s side to take her hand.
“Isn’t it obvious, Akane-chan?” Joker’s fanged smile stretched so wide it seemed to escape the confines of his face. “I’m eating him. Soon all his power will become mine, and then… ohhh, then I’ll make you all suffer…”
“Y… You’re a monster!” The admonition came from Candy, who drifted up in front of Happy, her small body quivering with indignation. “You’re even worse than Pierrot! Happy, we’ve got to stop him now, before he absorbs all of Pierrot’s power! We can still use the energy of the Miracle Jewel, but only if we hurry, ~kuru!”
Happy bit her lip and nodded, then looked at each of her teammates, her friends: Sunny, Peace, March, Beauty, and Candy… They had all been through so much together, and now it was about to end, one way or the other. “Come on, everyone!” she shouted. “One more time!”
Gathering into formation once again, the five Precure and Candy raised their joined hands to the heavens. The great phoenix appeared around them as before, spreading its blazing wings, growing larger and larger as they gathered all their remaining power… United, their voices rang out, a final defiant cry against the darkness...
“Make everyone’s powers as one! PRECURE… MIRACLE RAINBOW BURST!”
The phoenix reared back, then thrust its head forward. From its mouth emerged an immense river of multicolored holy light. That light spread through the darkness of space like a raging river, wider and wider still, enough to engulf even the vast black maelstrom that Joker stood upon…
Joker smirked and lazily lifted a finger.
Mere inches from him, the beam of light struck a solid wall of darkness and splashed against it impotently. The wall devoured the light as it broke apart, and soon nothing was left.
Cure Happy felt her blood run ice cold with fear as the phoenix protecting them dissolved, all too aware of the empty numbness that came from using far too much power at once. Their last attack, and it had done nothing, nothing at all... “How…?”
“Ah, I love those expressions on your faces,” purred Joker, licking his lips. “I’m looking forward to seeing far more of them in the future, but for now, I need you to disappear for a while, n’est pas?” He flicked his index finger in their direction…
A tidal wave of Bad Energy rushed over the six of them before they could react, before they could even think of trying to shield themselves. It roared and whipped at them in savage fury, shredding their shining robes, tossing them like leaves in a gale. Happy screamed in terror and pain and loss… she felt her grip on Sunny and Peace slipping… their hands being torn away from hers by the terrible force of the wave. Desperately she clung on as tight as she could, but it was no use. It wrenched them apart, scattering them in all directions, flung them back into the Earth’s gravity well like an angry god. Their ruined robes began to burn as they hit the atmosphere… the last thing Happy saw before she mercifully blacked out was her own shining stream of tears hanging in space, freezing instantly into ice crystals…
And as she fell, she heard Joker’s demented laughter. The sound chased her, echoing endlessly even in her unconscious mind…
NOW
Märchenland stood still and silent, its bright colors muted and dull. The sky was choked by black clouds, and a low wind blew over the rolling meadows of dry, dead grass that had once been green and verdant. Though the land of fairy tales and the world of humans stood separate from each other on different planes, it was clear now more than ever that they shared some fundamental connections, for the disaster that had befallen Earth was seeping into this world too, robbing it of light and life.
The Worst Ending was upon them.
Miyuki Hoshizora awoke sluggishly, a dull pain throbbing in every inch of her body. Her mind was a blank… how exactly she had come to lie here, she didn’t know. Everything was blurry, out of focus. She shook her head in an attempt to clear her vision. No sooner had she done so than a red and orange blur fell into her arms, hugging her much too tightly. “Suh…” Her mouth didn’t want to work right. “Sunny? A-Akane-chan…?”
“Miyuki!” sobbed Akane Hino, alias Cure Sunny, into her shoulder. “Miyuki, thank God you’re okay, I thought we lost you…”
“Are we in… Märchenland?” said Miyuki, looking around at the blighted fields as she gently patted her friend’s back, trying to console her. “What happened? I don’t remember…”
“We…” The husky, strained voice from behind her came from Nao Midorikawa, Cure March, who sat a few feet away. Her green eyes were hidden under the shade of her bangs. It sounded as if she were barely holding back tears of her own. “The Rainbow Burst, it…”
“It didn’t work,” said Reika Aoki, Cure Beauty. The blue-haired girl was somehow still calm and composed. She stared up at the black clouds gathering in the sky as if they held the answers. “We tried to purify Joker, but…”
“There was far too much Bad Energy inside him, ~de gozaru,” said a voice down by her feet. That was Pop, their other fairy companion and Candy’s older brother. He spoke in a formal tone that clashed with his cute and furry appearance, something like a cross between a fox and a lion. “Absorbing Pierrot must have boosted his power more than anyone expected… there was nothing we could do.”
“C-Candy?” whispered Miyuki. The little lamb-like fairy was nestled in Reika’s arms, returned to her normal form. Her colors were as muted and grey as the landscape around them and her breathing was shallow.
“My sister…” Pop sobbed once, then regained his composure. “She… won’t wake up…”
Miyuki swallowed as she took Candy from Reika and hugged her to her chest, willing some of her body’s warmth back into her. “Then…” Her eyes lit up with a little of her famed determination as she tried to struggle to her feet. “Then we’ve got to try again! It can’t be over yet, right? For Candy’s sake, for the sake of everyone, we’ve got to go back and fight!” She flashed a trembling smile at Akane, at Nao, at Reika, at-
Then she stopped, cold realization creeping up her spine. “… Where’s Yayoi?”
Akane hugged her again, while behind her Nao sobbed and in front of her Reika’s fists clenched so hard her knuckles turned white. Pop simply looked away.
“E-Everyone…?” said Miyuki softly. “Where did Yayoi-chan go?”
It was Pop who answered, hissing a name that seethed with hatred. “Joker. He took her…”
“No,” whispered Miyuki. “No… that… that can’t be.” Her eyes began to dim as she shook her head in denial. “Not Yayoi-chan, no…”
BAD END KINGDOM
Joker brimmed with power. His body glowed black with it, energy spilled from his fingertips. All of Pierrot’s Bad Energy was now his, and his alone. Infinite dark power, to use however he wished… and he knew exactly what he wanted to do with it first…
A cruel, sadistic smile split his face as he gazed down at the card in his hand, lovingly stroking its edges with one of his black claws. “You’ve caused me quite a bit of trouble, little Precure,” he whispered to the card. “We’re going to have to do something about that, aren’t we, Cure Peace?”
He leaned down and leered grotesquely at the card as he turned it in his fingers. It was a simple design, a solid yellow piece of thin stiff paper, but when he turned it over three times, a face appeared on it, frozen in an expression of terror. Her hands pressed against the surface of the card as if it were a wall, and small flickers of electricity gathered at the corners of her teary golden eyes. Joker grinned and leaned even closer as he licked his lips, knowing that she could see him from her prison and couldn’t look away. He imagined that he could hear her screaming, and shivered with pleasure at the thought.
MÄRCHENLAND
“We’ll get her back,” whispered Miyuki, gritting her teeth as she tried to stand.
“Miyuki?” Akane rose with her, supporting her with her own weight.
“We’ll get her back,” she repeated. “We’ll go and show Joker that he won’t get away with hurting our precious friend!” Looking at each of her friends in turn, she pumped her fists. “Akane, Nao, Reika, we can do this!”
Some of the color returned to their faces. As always, Miyuki’s enthusiasm was infectious; just hearing her say the words gave them hope…
“Even if C-Candy can’t help us…” Here Miyuki hugged the fairy to her breast, faltering for just a moment. “We have to try! Pop-san, you can help us go back to the Bad End Kingdom, right? That’s got to be where Joker’s taken her!”
Pop nodded gravely. “Of course I’ll help, ~de gozaru. But…”
“But what?”
He pointed a tiny finger upward toward the cloudy sky. “The portal is closed off, ~de gozaru. It only opens during…”
“… during the full moon,” finished Nao, her face falling again. “And it’s already past its phase, isn’t it…”
“Don’t tell me…” Akane sputtered. “D-Don’t tell me we gotta just leave Yayoi with that creep for a whole month! There’s gotta be another way, there’s just gotta!”
Pop shook his head. “Only someone from Bad End can travel freely back and forth from here to there. I’m sorry, but-”
“It’s okay, Pop-san.” Miyuki tightened one arm around Candy, and reached down with the other to pat Pop between the ears. “You’ve done all you can for now. There’s another way, there has to be. We’ll find it and save Yayoi… until then, we have to believe in her strength…”
BAD END KINGDOM
Yayoi Kise’s head hurt. All her senses felt dull, her vision was blurred and indistinct. Her legs were spread awkwardly apart, and her arms were locked in an odd position above her head, in the process of falling asleep. She moaned and shook herself, trying to dispel the feeling. Her limbs refused to move more than an inch or so, and trying to move made her ache even more, so she went limp and tried to figure out where she was and how she had come to be here… wherever here was. Remembering what had happened was difficult, she couldn’t-
A spotlight shone down on her from above, carving a lonely circle in the darkness, and the shape of the room slowly began to resolve itself. Most of it was impenetrable blackness, but she stood on what appeared to be an enormous wooden stage, framed by colorful curtains miles high… the stage was so huge that she looked the size of a doll by comparison. Yayoi blinked, confused…
A horribly familiar voice rang out. It seemed to come from every direction at once. “Welcome back, Cure Peace…!”
“J-” She shivered at the sound of that voice. “Joker…”
“Madamoiselle,” he said with a flourish. There was a flash of searing violet light, and a blurry shape moved in front of her, a shape with glowing red eyes. “I’m so happy you could finally join me, Peace… or rather, Yayoi-chan. You had me worried… I was afraid that all the Bad Energy I poured into you would make you sleep forever…”
“Bad… Energy…?” The yellow Precure shivered again. So that explained why she felt so strange, why she could barely see…
“Of course, Yayoi-chan.” The red-eyed shape reached for her, stroked her cheek with clawed fingers. “You know what’s going to happen to you, don’t you? You’re a smart girl, you should be able to figure it out.”
As she cringed away from his touch, Yayoi heard the clinking of metal. Something heavy and cold was clamped tight around each wrist and ankle, keeping her from moving… shackles. “What…” She struggled against her bonds with all her might. At full strength, she would have been able to snap the chains like twigs, but the shackles held fast, refusing to budge. “L-Let go of me!”
“Let go? But we’re going to have so much fun together, ma cherie!” said Joker, throwing his arms wide. “We have a whole month before your little friends can come back…”
“No…” As the full horror of her situation descended on her, tears started welling up unbidden in Yayoi’s eyes. To her horror, she found that though she was still transformed, the usual tingle of electricity that came with her tears was gone. She swallowed, gathered all the power she could muster, and raised her fingers in a V-shape. “Precure Peace Th-Thunder!”
Instead of the usual raging bolt of lightning, only a weak, pathetic spark spat from her fingertips. “Precure Peace Thunder!” she repeated. That time, not even a spark, just a tiny little pop of static.
“Non, non,” sighed Joker, clucking his tongue in disapproval. “We can’t have that, Yayoi-chan,” he said, tracing a claw over her mouth. “If you insist on trying to fight, I’ll rape you.”
Yayoi’s heart stopped, and ice flooded her veins. Her golden eyes grew wide as saucers, and her whole body shook with sudden bitter cold. “No. You…” she swallowed, barely able to speak. “E-even you w-wouldn’t dare…” The way he said it was so blunt, so straightforward, without any hesitation at all, how could even he conceive of something so cruel? It had to be a bluff, it had to be…
The shape of the harlequin leaned closer, his lips almost touching hers. One clawed hand pressed against the slender curve of her breast, the other slithered around to the small of her back. “Oh, wouldn’t I?” he whispered softly, his words like poisoned honey. “I want you to despair, Yayoi-chan. I want to see you pay for all the aggravation you and the other Precure have put me through. If I have to take your body to do it, then I will.”
Yayoi sucked in a deep breath and screamed, over and over again, until her throat burned raw and her voice gave out.
Through all this Joker didn’t move an inch; he simply waited until she was too exhausted to make another sound. His sinister grin spread across his face, so wide it should have split his jaws in half. With a cheery air, he removed his hands from her and said, “Just kidding.”
“Wh-” gasped the Precure, her head spinning. “What…”
“I was just kidding,” said the shape again, giggling as he flounced backward. “I wanted to see how you’d react. Now that I know how easy it is to make you scream, I don’t even need to bother, do I? Besides…” The blood-red eyes in his mask gleamed. “Violating you now would be so boring. There are so many other more interesting ways to play with you, and we have so much time… ”
“You… monster…!” Weeping bitterly, humbled and ashamed, Yayoi tugged at her shackles with all her remaining strength, to no avail. Joker was well out of her reach.
The harlequin’s shape drifted slowly backward. A giant playing card appeared behind him, and his body sank into it as if its surface were water. “Au revoir,” said Joker with a lazy wave of his hand. “I’ll come back to check on you later. Just be a good girl and try to stay quiet, n’est pas?”
“No!” howled Yayoi as the spotlight above her cut off. Now the only sources of light were Joker’s red, glowing eyes, and even those were fading as the card swallowed him. Her fingers reached for those lights without even intending it, like flowers reaching for the sun. “No, don’t! Please, don’t leave me in the-”
With a loud snap, the card vanished. She could still see the faint green afterglow of Joker’s eyes floating in her vision, but soon even that small light was gone, and everything was cold, black, and silent.
MÄRCHENLAND
28 DAYS LATER
They held on. Though they found no alternate path, no other way of reaching Yayoi, the remaining four Precure held on, desperately clinging to the hope that they would somehow rescue their friend. In the meantime, they trained… though days and nights in Märchenland had ceased to exist under the influence of the ceiling of ever-present black clouds, they rose early each morning with the aid of Nao’s watch and went straight to work. Akane and Nao were the strongest athletes of the group, of course, with Reika a close third, but in time even Miyuki was able to keep up with the exercise regimen. They trained in transformed and civilian forms alike, honing their focus, strengthening their attacks, shoring up their defenses, going at it for hour after hour…
Märchenland itself held on. Pop brought Candy to rest in the center of the Royale Queen’s palace… Candy’s palace now, since the former Queen had given the last of her energy to protect her children. The small fairy still did not wake, but being in the center of the palace brought some of her color back, and her presence seemed to stabilize the land’s decay, halting it, or at the very least, slowing it down.
There was no question of returning to Earth. The Precure had discussed it, positing that perhaps there were a few remaining Decors hidden away in the blasted wasteland… but when Pop was sent there to look, he returned hours later in a state so somber that Miyuki burst into tears. Not only were there no Decors left on Earth, there was simply nothing there: no buildings, no survivors, no life at all… just dry, barren rock and black clouded skies the world over.
Days passed…
A pained grunt escaped Miyuki as she tumbled to the ground, kicking up dead blades of grass. “Phah,” she spat in disgust… there were a few blades in her mouth.
“That was good, Miyuki-chan, try again!” Nao stood a few feet away in a defensive stance, her fists raised. “This time, go low. Aim for my ankles.”
Pushing herself to her feet, Miyuki wiped her mouth on the back of her sleeve and set her face, her mouth a hard, thin line. Barely a second passed when she didn’t think about Yayoi: her blonde curls, her ever-present sketchbook, her soft, polite voice and cute round face… the idea of her at the mercy of Joker was too horrible to contemplate for long, so she treasured her memories of Yayoi instead, keeping them close to her heart like a flame. They would succeed, they had to. The full moon was tonight, this was their chance. Though she had been gone for most of a month, there was no doubt in Miyuki’s mind that Yayoi was still alive, still fighting… Tonight, they would storm the Bad End Kingdom, defeat Joker once and for all, rescue Yayoi, and return life to both Earth and Märchenland. They would do it, because the alternative was unthinkable… “Okay, Nao-chan, here I come!” She began her charge, her tired muscles tense… less than a foot from Nao, she dropped into a low crouch and swept the ground with her outstretched foot.
Nao jumped, but a little too late… the edge of Miyuki’s sneaker tagged her ankle and sent her sprawling backwards. She hit the ground with a painful thump… but she grinned as she lifted her head to face her attacker. “That’s it, Miyuki-chan, good job! I knew you could do it!”
Righting herself, Miyuki rubbed the back of her head in an embarrassed manner. She couldn’t help but smile a bit herself. “Th-thanks, Nao-chan… I only did it because I had such a good teacher…” She extended a hand to help her friend up.
On a nearby knoll, Akane and Reika rested for a moment, cooling their burning faces with towels soaked in water from the nearby river. The redhead almost chuckled as she watched Miyuki finally master that sweep kick… it had been giving her trouble for almost a week. “’Bout time she got that move right,” Akane said to Reika, nudging her with her elbow. “Seein’ her fall on her butt was funny the first few times, but then it just started gettin’ embarrassin’.”
Prim and proper as ever, Reika showed the hint of a smile. “Shall we spar again?”
“Yeah,” said Akane. “Just gimme a few more minutes.”
Nao clapped a friendly hand on Miyuki’s shoulder, making the shorter girl’s knees buckle a little. “Just wait, you’ll have that roundhouse I showed you down in no-”
A collective shudder passed through the four girls. They felt him coming before they ever saw him… an aura of dark power so strong that it preceded his presence by almost a full second. They all looked up at once…
A giant playing card snapped into being about six feet above them. It spun crosswise in a brief whirl of motion, and then came to a stop with Joker leaning on it in mid-air, his legs crossed casually. “Bonjour, Precure!” he called down to them. “Keeping busy, I hope?”
“Joker!” Miyuki’s hands balled into fists. “Where’s Yayoi? What have you done with her?”
Joker tapped his chin in mock ignorance. “Yayoi, Yayoi… Pardonez-moi, Miyuki-chan, but I’m not sure exactly whom you’re referring to…”
Shaking with repressed anger, Reika stood and gave the harlequin her fiercest glare. “You will return our precious friend, now,” she said, somehow managing to make even a threat sound polite.
“And then we’re gonna pound ya!” growled Akane, shaking her fist up at him. “Ya hear that, bastard?”
“I really don’t know what you mean,” said Joker with a sigh, shaking his head. “But if you’re really so eager to play…” With that, he snapped his fingers…
A thunderclap split the air as a blinding bolt of violet lightning descended from the heavens. It struck the ground, setting the dead grass ablaze and throwing up a cloud of acrid smoke from the point of impact.
“What the…” coughed Nao, waving her hand in front of her face to clear the smoke.
A second aura of immense power came from the figure standing shrouded in the cloud. As before, it passed through each of the four Precure, making them shudder…
Slowly the wind blew away the smoke, and the girl within stood revealed in the burning crater she had made. A set of black full-body tights hugged her body, showing off every slender curve, the only spots of color being a pair of ruffled yellow skirts, one at her waist and one at shoulder-level, and the columns of dark yellow diamonds up and down either side of the suit. The face and hair resembled their lost friend, but they were wrong… a dark mirror image of her, sharper, more angular, distorted. The girl shivered in delight as she opened her eyes, rimmed by orange eyeshadow. Her eyes were gold, but blank and glazed, cold and unfeeling as a steel wall. She raised her hand and spread her index and middle fingers in a familiar V-shape, and violet sparks leapt from her fingertips. And she smiled… a terrible, cruel smile, identical to Joker’s, and all the more horrible for it…
The four Precure stared in disbelief. Their minds seemed to have stopped working altogether.
“That… that can’t-” muttered Miyuki in shock. It had to be a trick, or a fake. It had to be. There was just no way it could be real…
Above, Joker clapped his hands with glee. “These she is, Precure…! My masterpiece, my piece de resistance… You destroyed my first set of Bad End Precure, but I’ve found the most lovely replacement for them, don’t you agree?” He gestured down to the girl in black. “My mistake that time, madamoiselles, was thinking that I could destroy you by copying your powers… that was a bad idea, I admit. So I figured, why settle for mere copies? She’s already proven to be far stronger than any duplicate could be… isn’t that right, ma cherie?”
The girl in black spoke. There was a fawning giggle in her voice. “That’s right, Master Joker.”
With a theatrical flourish, the harlequin spread his arms. “So then, Precure, the stage for the finale is finally set! It is my great pride and honor to reintroduce you all to the new and improved Legendary Warrior of Despair, my greatest creation… Bad End Peace. Let the show… begin!”
