“Wake up Sky!” A chipper female voice echoed up the stairs of a small house in the rural town of Avantura. The sun was just peaking above the horizon and the Dodrio were crowing. For most, it was a normal day, but for one special young woman it was a major turning point in her life.
The young lady in question was just arising from a restless night of anticipation. Her big sky blue eyes were shining brightly in contrast with her sinful black hair. Quickly dawning her favorite pair of short jean shorts and a candy apple red spaghetti strap tank top, Sky hopped down the stairs, a spring in her step and a grin lighting her delicate features. Her hip length pin straight black locks flowed around her body in waves.
“Good morning sweetie pie!” Sky looked up to see her mother, clad in a sunshine yellow sundress and a pink apron, holding up Sky’s large black backpack.
“Morning mom.” Sky greeted and looped the straps around her shoulders, welcoming the heavy weight onto her back.
“Did you pack everything you needed? A few changes of clothes? An extra pair of shoes? Extra underwear?”
“Yes mom!” Sky blushed and rolled her eyes affectionately at her mother.
“I’m sorry dear. You know how I worry. Here let me look at you,” Sky’s mother sniffed and held her only daughter’s shoulders in a soft grip.
Her mother’s matching blue eyes looked over her face and her body caringly, as if trying to commit every detail to memory.
“Mom I will come visit I promise.” Sky assured and hugged her mother tightly.
“Dour! Dour!” The women heard and looked to see Demon, their pet Houndour barking and running down the hall at full speed.
“Demon!” Sky gushed and knelt down hugging him to her chest. They had gotten him when he was born the previous year and her parents allowed her to name him and Demon had been a special part of her life ever since. “I will miss you too love.”
“Alright you better go before you are late.” Sky’s mother sniffed and shooed her toward the front door.
Leaving her mother and Demon on the porch of their home, Sky hopped onto her bike and rode quickly down the dirt road. She passed the several other homes in the area, each neighbor wishing her well on her journey. Sky’s heart beat erratically as a large building came into view. Stopping just outside of the automatic sliding doors Sky leaned her bike against the wall and took a deep breath.
“I can do this,” she whispered to herself and walked through the doors, welcomed by the stares of the professor’s aides.
“Good morning Sky,” several of them greeted her by name and smiled at her.
“Morning, is the professor here?”
“Yes I am.” Sky heard and looked up to see Professor Pine. His familiar nerdy middle aged face made Sky smile and her nerves settle slightly.
Professor’s wise grass green eyes were framed by black glasses and his ruffled gray hair was kept short. Slight wrinkles outlined his mouth and eyes, giving him a gentle aged look. He wore his usual pristine white lab coat over a pressed button down, black slacks, and loafers.
“Hi Professor Pine!” Sky greeted with a grin and hugged him. The professor had known her ever since she was a young toddler and Sky couldn’t help but become attached.
“It’s nice to see you too my dear. I understand you are here for your first pokemon today?” He asked leading her, with a kind hand on her back, to a room in the back of the lab.
“Yes sir. I can’t wait. I’m so excited Professor!” Sky gushed, entering the room with him through an archway and staring fixatedly at three very different pokemon. All of which were playing in a small section of the room closed off by a small gate.
“Sky I would like you to meet Growlithe, a fire type pokemon. Poliwag, a water type. And Oddish, a grass type.”
Sky took her time looking over each pokemon individually. Growlithe was a big puppy with orange fur with black stripes. Beige tuffs of fur surrounded his neck, tail, and the top of his head. He was 2 foot 5 inches tall and looked to weigh about 50 pounds. As he panted up at her with shiny odd colored purple eyes Sky felt her heart skip a beat. She then moved her attention to Poliwag, who seemed to be a small dark blue tadpole with a clockwise swirl on his white belly. His pink lips were pulled into a smile as he played with a ball using his tail. Finally Oddish, she was round and dark blue with tiny feet and big leaves protruding from her head. She was currently running around kicking a small pink ball.
“They all are so cute, but I made my decision as soon as I saw him. I pick Growlithe!” Sky bent over and patted Growlithe on his warm head.
“Growlllll-ithe!” He howled and smiled, his long pink tongue lapping at Sky’s hand.
“Would you like to name him?” The professor asked as he pulled a Pokedex and 6 pokeballs from his lab coat pocket.
“Hmm how about Aries?” Sky decided and laughed when Growlithe barked happily again.
“Sounds good, quite appropriate, god of fire and all that,” Professor Pine chuckled. “Here. These are a few things you will need on your pokemon journey. A pokedex, to record all the data on pokemon you discover and pokeballs, one of which is Aries’ pokeball.”
“Thank you so much. I really appreciate all of this hospitality.”
“It is my pleasure Skylar. You have my number so please call me any time, if you have any questions or just want to chat.” Professor Pine led Sky back outside and waved as she rode away on her bike.
The pokemon lab slowly started to fade behind Sky when her cellphone suddenly rang.
“Hello?” Sky answered, slowing to a stop on the side of the road.
“Hi sweetie! It’s just me!” Her mother greeted on the other side of the line. “I am sorry to bother you but you forgot the regional map at home.”
“Oh crap. Okay I will come back, you can meet my pokemon that way,” Sky decided as she turned her bike and rode towards her house.
“Okay honey, see you soon!”
It only took her several minutes to get back home but as soon as she walked through the door she was greeted by a bear hug from someone with very familiar hard biceps and a wide chest.
“Nate!” Sky enthused and hugged him back tightly. Nate had been her next door neighbor for as long as she could remember and they had always been close friends. He was two years older than her, she was 16 and he was 18.
“Hey Sky!” Nate kissed her on the cheek and plopped her back down onto the ground.
“What are you doing here Nate?” Sky asked as she looked up to see her mom bring in the map of the beautiful Dicentra region that she had forgotten.
“Well sweetie he came by a few minutes after you left and I told him I would call you back here to meet him. He wanted to show you the pokemon he got from Professor Pine earlier this morning.”
“Me first!” Sky called and threw up her pokeball and out came Aries, barking proudly and puffing out his chest. “Mom, Nate, this is Aries.”
“Oh how adorable. You sure love your dog pokemon don’t you Sky?” Mom giggled and petted Sky’s new pokemon.
Demon walked over to Aries, both dog pokemon sniffing each other curiously before softly barking at each other playfully.
“Mine is a fire type too!” Nate exclaimed and called out his pokemon. “This is Litleo!” A 2 foot tall lion cub with a small bit of spiky red hair on the top of his head walked around Aries, analyzing him.
“Wanna have a battle Sky? Let’s see who is better.” Nate smirked and held up Litleo’s pokeball in a challenge.
“Sure! What do you say Aries?” Sky asked, looking down at her pokemon with a smile.
“Growl!” He barked back and licked at her hand.
“Not in the house kids, use the front yard!” Sky’s mom chastised from the kitchen.
“Okay mom!” After putting all of their supplies down, Nate and Sky made their way outside, their pokemon following suit.
“Ladies first,” Nate smiled and watched as his Litleo took an offensive stance in front of him.
“Okay let’s see what moves you have Aries,” Sky mumbled to herself and pulled out the Pokedex that Professor Pine gave her.
“Growlithe, the puppy pokemon. Extremely loyal, this pokemon will fearlessly bark at any opponent to protect its own trainer from harm. At level 6, this male Growlithe knows the moves Bite, Growl, and Ember.” The Pokedex spoke and Sky listened intently, fascinated by the technology.
“Now let’s see what it says about Litleo,” Sky then pointed the Pokedex at Litleo.
“Litleo, the lion club pokemon. They set off on their own from their pride and live by themselves to become stronger. These hot-blooded pokemon are quick to fight. At level 6 this male Litleo knows the moves Tackle, Leer, and Ember.”
“Okay, I know you can do this Aries!” Sky encouraged, putting her Pokedex back in her pocket.
“Growllll,” Aries howled at growled at Litleo.
“Aries use Growl!” Sky commanded and Aries released an ear shattering snarl that lowered Litleo’s attack power.
“Very nice but now it’s my turn,” Nate smirked. “Litleo, use tackle attack!”
“Aries dodge and bite!” Sky said quickly, watching Litleo charge toward Aries at full speed.
At the last possible second Aries dodged the attack and turned, biting Litleo on the back leg. Litleo howled and whimpered until Aries let him go.
“Litleo use ember!” Nate called and Litleo jumped back only limping slightly from the bite, opening his mouth ready to use his next attack.
“Aries use ember as well!” Sky mimicked and the two fire types unleashed a wild stream of fire that collided, knocking both pokemon back.
“Tackle again!” Nate demanded and Litleo ran towards Aries.
“Aries use ember to slow down Litleo!”
Aries let loose his fire and it wasn’t very affective. Litleo crashed into Aries, knocking him onto his back.
“Aries use bite!” Sky called quickly taking advantage of Litleo’s closeness.
Aries recovered swiftly and bit Litleo on the neck, causing Litleo to cry out before fainting.
“Good job Aries! You were amazing!” Sky cheered and hugged him to her as he howled in his victory.
“Not bad Sky, but I’ll get you next time.” Nate promised and returned the exhausted pokemon to his pokeball.
“Can’t wait,” Sky giggled and kept Aries out by her side.
After getting his things Nate left to start his journey, and just as Sky was about to do the same her mom stopped her.
“Honey wait-”
“Mom we went through this earlier, I promise to call.”
“No not that. I mean yes I want you to call but that’s not why I stopped you.”
“Okay what is it then?” Sky asked, putting on her backpack.
“I know this might be a lot to handle, you being a beginner and everything, but as soon as you left Demon became very depressed. Why don’t you take him with you?”
“But won’t you be lonely mom?” Sky thought about her petite mother alone in their house all day every day.
“No sweetie don’t you worry about me. Besides I’ve had my eye on a cute little pokemon the Professor has down at his lab.”
“Okay, if you are sure. Demon!” Sky called and the Houndour happily came running. “You wanna join me on my journey Demon?”
“Hound!” He barked and stomped his feet enthusiastically.
“That looks like a yes,” Sky’s mother said and they both giggled.
Sky put Demon into one of her pokeballs before letting him back out.
“Bye dear,” Sky’s mother whispered and they shared a hug.
For the last time, for now at least, Sky left her home, Aries walking on her right and Demon on her left. Sky had never felt as protected as she did in that moment, surrounded by her loyal dog pokemon, all of them walking toward the nearest destination of Insetto City.
****
An hour after leaving home Sky and her pokemon found themselves at the entrance of Entomo Forest.
“Well boys it seems that we have to pass through here to get to the city,” Sky mumbled, staring confusedly at the map in her hands.
Both dog pokemon barked in response and Sky giggled. “Alright well here is a small snack before we go in.” Sky let both of them eat an Oran berry from her hand.
They then started hiking through the heavily wooded forest, passing many normal and bug type pokemon on the way.
Numerous trainers stopped Sky for a battle but she easily took care of them with her protective puppy pokemon. Several hours passed and both pokemon were now level 10 and just as they reached halfway through the forest they decided to take a break. Just as both pokemon finished their pokemon food a rustling of leaves drew their attention to the nearby brush. Aries and Demon jumped up and placed themselves between Sky and the rustling bushes. Their teeth bared in a protective snarl.
“Chika?” Sky heard and looked to see an adorable light green pokemon with a big leaf on its head. A pair of big light red eyes watched Sky carefully.
“What is that?” Sky asked herself and pulled out her pokedex.
“Chikorita, the leaf pokemon. A sweet aroma gently wafts from the leaf on its head. It is usually docile and loves to soak up sun rays. At level 9 this female Chikorita knows the moves Tackle, Growl, Razor Leaf, and Poison Powder.”
“Wow, what do you say we catch us a new friend you guys?” Sky said and pulled out an empty pokeball. “Aries go for it and use ember.”
“Chika!” The small grass pokemon jumped and cried out from the fire that consumed it.
“You’re mine Chikorita!” Sky cheered and threw the pokeball at the weak pokemon.
“Chika!” Chikorita cried out and whipped its leaf around knocking the ball back to Sky.
“What-” Sky stared, dumbfounded at the sassy grass type.
“Chika chika!” She puffed out and use Razor Leaf, hitting both Aries and Demon.
Demon growled at Chikorita, disliking the fact that it was also hit.
“Calm down Demon, two against one isn’t fair.” At her scold, Demon sat back down watching the sequence of events carefully.
“Alright Aries, give her another ember!” Aries released another stream of fire but Chikorita dodged it and ran towards Aries, knocking into him using a tackle attack.
“Aries use bite!” Sky called out and watched as Aries bit Chikorita around her neck, making her cry out and fidget against his rough grip and sharp teeth.
“Second time’s the charm!” Sky hoped and threw the ball at the fallen pokemon, watching as it engulfed her in a beam of red light. The closed pokeball fell to the dirt and squirmed, once…twice….one last time before locking completely.
“Yes!” Sky cheered running to grab her new pokemon. “Oh my gosh that was such a rush!” She breathed out in a huff and patted both her dog pokemon on the head.
“Aries, Demon. That is just the beginning. This is a new life for all of us. We will make more friends like this and journey across the whole world. And we will do it together. That’s a promise.”
