Story 1: Harada Sanosuke
Another Warning: This story does include some intense depictions of a particular incident that happens during Harada's day. If you are bothered by evil people killing innocents, don't read. Other than that, read with the understanding that this story centers around a very emotional connection. Enjoy!
Yuki looked up from her sweeping with a smile as one of the patroling divisions came through the front gates, her smile falling as she saw the captain of the tenth division. Harada was trailing just slightly behind his men, his usually bright face paled and drawn and his uniform spattered in dirt and blood. She slowly approached as he dismissed his men, stopping as he turned and nearly ran her over:
"Sorry about that--Oh, it's you Yuki. What are you up to?" She looked him up and down with a small frown, clutching her broom against her chest:
"I was just sweeping the courtyard...are you alright Harada-san? Your uniform has blood on it and you look a little sick..." he shrugged, gesturing for her to walk with him as he continued on to the captain's living quarters:
"I'm fine, just a little tired is all. Do we have any tea made? I'm really beat." She nodded, setting her broom down as she rushed to the kitchen and put together a small plate of mochi and tea. She stopped as Heisuke came into the kitchen, giving him a smile:
"Hi Heisuke-kun, how was your patrol?" He shrugged, picking up a piece of mochi before stuffing it into his mouth:
"Fine, nothing interesting really. Where's Sano? I heard his division ran into a little bit of trouble today. Hijikata-san is still at the scene but he won't tell anyone what happened." Yuki sighed. She knew it wasn't nothing:
"He's in his room right now, but I'm about to take this to him. Do you want to come with me?" Heisuke shook his head, picking up another piece of mochi before heading for the door:
"Naw, I'll go see him later. Besides, he probably doesn't wanna talk about it right now. I heard the problem was with a young child." Yuki flinched as he spoke. A child? What could have happened?
She made her way back to Harada's room, kneeling outside as she called softly to him:
"Harada-san? Can I come in?"
"Yeah, come on in..."
"Excuse me." Yuki quietly opened the door as she slipped inside, stopping. Harada sat near the window on the far side of his room, spear propped against his shoulder and a cup of sake in his hand. He hadn't even bothered to clean up yet. She slowly made her way towards him. Something must have gone horribly wrong for Harada to be drinking by himself:
"Thanks Yuki...What?" she set the tray down beside him, slowly kneeling before him:
"...Are you sure you're alright Harada-san? Heisuke told me...about today..." Harada sighed heavily, swallowing the remaining contents of his cup before picking up the tokkuri to refill it:
"That knucklehead, of course he'd say something..." Yuki carefully took the tokkuri from him as she noticed his shaky hands, looking up at him quietly as she refilled his cup. He smiled, taking another small sip: "I'm sorry Yuki-chan, I honestly didn't mean to lie to you. I just didn't want to worry you with it..." He carefully put his spear down out of the way, slouching further against the window sill as he relapsed into a sudden silence.
Yuki watched him quietly for a moment before she scooted closer, taking the chokko from his limp hand:
"Harada-san...do you want to talk about it?" He remained silent as he stared down at her, his golden eyes wavering:
"I...ugh, I don't know..." Yuki blinked in surprise as he turned away from her and leaned back, remaining stock still as he carefully laid his head in her lap, looking up at her as he laid on his back: "Do you really want to hear about it? It wasn't exactly an...easy thing." Yuki nodded, absent mindedly pulling a stray lock of hair from his face:
"If it would make you feel better I'll listen Harada-san, I know I don't know what you saw, but I think coming from the orphanage I was at maybe I'll understand a little..." He continued to stare up at her uncertainly as she laid her hands gently on his chest, eventually closing his eyes in resignation:
"Alright..." Yuki gave him a small smile as they sat in silence, allowing him to gather his thoughts and begin talking.
"It started at about 2 o'clock today. The men and I had just ended our eastward patrol and were preparing to turn around to begin our last loop on the way back to headquarters when I noticed there was no one in the street. Well," he paused, his usually soft eyes hardening: "No one but a small child standing at the mouth of an alley staring at us. I thought perhaps that the kid had gotten lost so I went over to talk to him but he just ran off so we continued on our patrol. A short while afterwards I saw the same kid standing just a little ways off, this time infront of an inn that Yamazaki was investigating because of some rumors that some Choshu ronin were hiding inside." He stopped talking again, clenching his jaw: "I went to talk to the kid again since it seemed a little odd that we had seen him twice already and all he did was stare at us before running away. I never expected..." Yuki watched in distress as he covered his face with his arm, his whole body trembling: "I never expected those bastards to use a child to try and get at the Shinsengumi." Yuki felt her insides churn at the mere thought of this. What had Harada been through?
She blinked as Harada's large warm hand grasped hers in a shaky, desperate grip, his golden eyes shimmering with unshed tears:
"I didn't even realize it until too late that they had strapped explosives to the kid and had lit the fuse just as my men and I had come within range...I tried to run to the kid but...he...What the hell is wrong with this world Yuki? That kid...there wasn't anything left of him but a smear on my clothes and a crater in the earth. And I doubt that he knew what those men were using him for...and...why...why couldn't I have seen it earlier?" Yuki gripped Harada's shaking hand with both of hers as he broke down, shaking her head:
"Harada-san, this isn't your fault! There's no way you could have known what was going on until the last moment..." He gave out a bark of bitter laughter, a single tear falling silently down his cheek:
"If I was a better warrior this would never have happened. It's because I was unresolved in my beliefs that I totally ruled out the possibility of those assholes using children against us. It is my fault. That child is dead because I failed." Harada blinked as Yuki let go of his hand and cupped his face, looking up at her in surprise as she tilted his head back: "Yuki?"
"It isn't your fault Harada-san! Just because you're a strong, compassionate person who would lay his life down for anyone who is in danger and would never even dream of using dirty, unforgiveable tactics like these men did today does not at all mean that you are a bad warrior or that it was your fault! Harada-san, if the world was like you there would be no war because everyone could resolve their differences fairly and peaceably. Don't try to take all of this on by yourself!"
Harada stared up at the small figure above him, stupified. He'd never expected so much emotion to come out of such a small person. Yuki blinked as the silence continued, blushing lightly as he continued staring:
"Wh-What? I was only telling the truth..." she huffed in embarrassment, beginning to pull her hands away from his face. She stopped as his hands landed on hers, keeping them on his face:
"You're really stubborn, did you know that?" Yuki shook her head as Harada smiled up at her, her cheeks still flushed a light pink:
"N-No I'm not."
"Yes you are."
"No!"
"Yep, stubborn." Yuki gave up as he chuckled softly, her heart lifting as little by little as a glimmer of his usual self peeked through his earlier despair: "Thank you." She smiled back as he reached up and lightly stroked her cheek, nodding:
"Welcome!" Harada continued smiling as he sat up, looking back over his shoulder at her:
"You'd better go cook dinner now. I'm sure the others are wondering where you are." Yuki nodded, getting up:
"Okay. Are you sure you're alright now Harada-san?" He waved her off, getting up to open the door for her:
"Yea. I shouldn't be surprised anymore, but you really have a way of lightening people up. I'll see you at dinner, I need to go clean up and talk with Hijikata-san about the incident. See you soon, okay?" she gave a small bow as they set off to their destinations, still smiling as she set to work in the kitchen.
.......................................................................................................................................................................................
Harada took a deep breath as he stopped outside of Hijikata's room, calling quietly:
"Hijikata-san, are you there?"
"...come in Harada." Harada bit his lip as he knelt down and opened the door. He sounded pissed.
"Excuse me." Harada quickly knelt down behind the Demon Vice Commander as he sat facing away from him at his work table, remaining silent as he waited for him to finish. He was scribbling furiously on a sheet of paper:
"Are you alright?" Harada nodded as Hijikata finally turned to face him, bowing his head:
"I'm fine, just a little...frazzled." Hijikata nodded, setting his brush down as he rubbed his aching head:
"Yea, I know what you mean...What a mess..." They sat in a heavy silence for a minute before Harada cleared his throat, looking up at him uncertainly:
"So...What do you need me to do?" Hijikata shrugged, shaking his head:
"Nothing. There's nothing you can do anymore. It's...unfortunate that the child died but...Yamazaki was able to arrest the men responsible for the attack. They have already been interrogated and are currently being held in a cell off the west wing." He paused as he noticed Harada clench his hands, his eyes softening slightly: "This wasn't your fault you know. No one as compassionate and noble as you would have expected those men to use a child like that." Harada let out his breath in a small laugh as Hijikata spoke, shaking his head incredulously:
"That's exactly what Yuki said...Damn. Why did this have to happen?" Hijikata shook his head, picking up his cold cup of tea:
"I don't have an answer, I just know that as long as we keep true to our beliefs and seek justice, we might just make a slight difference in someone's life someday." Harada smiled at the thought, nodding as he got up:
"Thanks Hijikata-san, I promise I'll do more next time to prevent something like this from ever happening again." Hijikata waved him off as he turned back to his work, pausing as a thought struck him:
"One more think Harada. I know you wouldn't kill in cold blood, but I'm going to warn you none the less. Do not go anywhere near the west wing for now, alright? I don't want anything else to happen for now." Harada smiled in understanding, shutting the door to the Vice Commanders room before looking around the small garden. The flowers around the pond had just began to bloom and the trees had small leaves in them, giving the whole yard a young, lively look. He sighed, a sudden sense of longing filling him. He turned down the hall towards the kitchen.
Yuki tried her best not to worry herself as she busied herself making dinner in the kitchen, chopping furiously at the vegetables she was preparing for dinner.
What if Hijikata got mad at him? What if he had to leave because of this?
She tossed the vegetables into the pot, bringing out more and beginning to cut them as the door opened, startling her:
"Ow!" Yuki gasped as the knife she was using slipped, cutting her finger:
"Are you alright?" Harada hurried over to her as she began bleeding all over the place, his expression worried. Yuki gave him an encouraging smile as she looked for something to staunch the bleeding:
"I'm fine Harada-san, I just need something to wipe the blood up--wah!" she let out a small squeak as he grabbed her wrist and pulled her closer, blushing furiously as he raised her bleeding finger to his lips and gently lapped up the escaping blood. She tried to pull away, stopping as he frowned at her:
"Hold still!" She sighed in exhasperation and embarassment, obediently remaining still as he lightly sucked the blood from her finger. After a minute he brought her "cleaned" hand away form his mouth and pulled a roll of bandage from his pocket, remaining quiet as he quickly and efficiently wrapped her up:
"Thanks Harada-san." He nodded, letting go of her as she turned back to the food: "Is miso and fish okay for dinner tonight? I'm making some vegetables to go with it, so I think it'll be enough--" she stopped talking as two strong arms wound gently around her waist, the blush from earlier returning as Harada rested his head on her shoulder: "Harada-san? Is something wrong?" He shrugged, unconsciously hugging her tighter:
"Sorry about your finger." She shook her head, putting her hands gently over his:
"It's fine Harada-san, I should have been more careful and not have been distracted by you coming in. Is there anything else? You seem kind of quieter than usual." He sighed, shaking his head:
"Nah, just a little...resigned I guess. Hijikata-san said the exact same thing you did." Yuki smiled, craning her head back to look at him. Even at a standard 5'4'' Harada seemed to tower over her. She practically had her head resting on his chest and yet he was comfortable looking down at her. He smiled, carefully pulling a hair from her face as his golden eyes stared down at her softly: "Have I ever told you you're really cute?" Yuki blinked, her face turning beet red as his words sunk in:
"Wh-Wh--huh?" Harada laughed at her reaction and red cheeks, a pure, musical sound:
"God, you're just too adorable sometimes." Yuki shook her head furiously, setting her knife down as she tried to pull away from him as he continued to laugh:
"N-No I'm not!" He laughed even harder as she wiggled in his arms and managed to turn herself around, still trapped in his arms: "You're so mean Harada-san..." He smiled as she looked away from him indignantly, her cheeks still pink. He felt his smile fall as the longing he had felt earlier returned, looking down at her searchingly.
She really is cute...no, beautiful...Her petite features, all the expressions she made...her resilient actions...stubborn, tricky, kind, loving, strong...all combined into one perfect woman...
"-ada-san?...Harada-san! are you okay?" He snapped out of his thoughts as she called to him, his attention focusing on her worried face. Her bright eyes, small nose, pink lips...
Yuki blinked as one of Harada's hands lightly stroked her hair before gently gripping her chin, looking up at him in confusion as he gently tilted her head back: "Harada-san?" He remained silent, his golden eyes staring down at her intensely. It was almost animal, the way he looked almost as if he wanted to eat her...
Yuki's eyes widened as warm, silky lips pressed softly to hers, her small hands weakly gripping his shirt. She made a soft noise of surprise as his lips moved sensually over hers, her whole body heating up as he deepened their kiss. Yuki blushed, unsure of what to do as her brain refused to form any coherent thought. Harada slowly began to pull away as she remained unresponsive, freezing as she quickly brought her hands up to cup his face. Yuki looked up at him shyly, lightly pressing her lips to his as he looked down at her uncertainly. He immediately responded to her returned kiss, pulling her closer as his lips moved more surely over hers. Yuki blushed as a soft moan escaped her, closing her eyes as his warmth surrounded her in a blissful ecstacy. She gave a small gasp as he teasingly bit her lower lip, shuddering as he took the opportunity to slip his tongue between her parted lips. She let out a soft whimper as their tongues danced together, her legs trembling as their kiss became more fevered. Harada let out low groan, his strong arms lifting her with ease before setting her down on the counter. Yuki blushed as he fit himself between her legs, their bodies pressed together as he continued to ravage her. She blinked as he suddenly stopped and pulled away, looking over to the door. Loud footsteps could be heard coming closer and closer to the kitchen.
Harada groaned in disappointment, giving her a regretful, needy look before pulling away to the other side of the kitchen right as the door slammed open:
"Sano! Oh, there you are. Where you been? I wanted to go to that dango place but I couldn't find you and I didn't want to go alone--...what's goin' on here?" Nagakura stopped his rant as he looked between the two of them, noticing their light pants:
"What, did you guys race here or something?" Yuki blushed, rubbing her head lamely:
"Y-yep! I was helping Harada-san with something and I realized I still had stuff on the stove so I had to run back here and he came with me! Oops!" Nagakura glanced at Harada who nodded, his eyebrow twitching:
"Uh-huh. Right. And I suppose running for 30 seconds makes both of you blush?" Yuki slapped her hands over her cheeks as he spoke, shocked. Could he really tell that easily?
"It's hot Shinpatchi, of course we look a little flushed." Shinpatchi rolled his eyes:
"Whatever, I'll find out eventually when you're drunk enough to spill the beans. Anyways, I'll see you guys later. You gonna come to that dango place with me tomorrow? Neither of us have patrol tomorrow, right?" Harada waved him off, nodding:
"Sure sure. Where's everyone else?" Nagakura shrugged, immediately picking up a piece of mochi as he noticed the plate:
"Dunno. Souji and Saito were practicing in the hall a little while ago, but I don't know where they went. Mmm, these are good. See ya guys later!"
Both Yuki and Harada sighed in relief as Nagakura left and closed the door:
"That was close..." Yuki looked up at Harada shyly as he slowly came back towards her:
"We'd better get dinner done, I'm sure everyone's hungry by now." Yuki smiled, hopping off the counter to finish cutting the vegetables she'd begun cutting earlier as Harada heated up the pan she was using for the fish and began frying them for her. They worked in a comfortable silence as they prepared dinner, occasionally brushing hands as they worked. Every time they touched Yuki felt her heart speed up. What was going to happen to them?

Guess What? CLIFFHANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hehehehehehehehehehe...looks like you absolutely have to read the next chapter for a LEMONY SURPRISE :}
And if you think the kiss scene was smexy...oh buddy are you in for a big surprise.
Also, I might have some grammer/spelling mistakes throughout the piece. It's okay. Laugh with me. For example, at one point, I wrote that a character said that everyone was probably "hungary". I'm sure you all know that I did not mean that the characters are some European country but rather that their stomachs will be making dinosaur noises at them if they don't get fed. :) Silly little things like this. (I fixed this one by the way)
