The ad flier was simple and straightforward, almost to the point of being overlooked among the other advertisements for babysitting jobs, garage sales, and lost Pokemon that were tacked to the town message board.
"P&H Inc. is looking for young adults to participate in new and upcoming films. Plenty of positions available. All applicants must be comfortable around cameras and Pokemon."
That was how Tanner came to be standing in front of what seemed to be a gated community. From outside the wrought-iron fencing, he could only see through the entry gate to a very large and expensive looking manor; the rest of the view was blocked by tall, well-groomed hedges planted directly behind the ornate fence.
"Can I help you, sir?" A woman's voice startled him from his rubber-necking. After a confusing moment of searching for the source of the voice, his gray eyes settled on a small call box next to the gate's entry, and a security camera settled up high on the fence.
"Yes, um, I'm here about your advertisement?" He looked up into the camera as he spoke, watching it adjust to his movements.
"Ah, of course. Seeing as how we're only looking to work with adults at this time, could you hold up your ID to the camera so that I can verify your age please?" The woman spoke from the call box, and the camera's lens refocused.
'They won't even let me in until I prove my age? That seems kind of weird.' He pulled his wallet from the back pocket of his tan khakis and pulled his ID out from its sleeve. He felt ridiculous holding it up to the security camera's view, but he could hear it whir as it zoomed in on the card's information.
"Very good sir, I'll open the gate for you. Just walk into the building directly down the path." The large entry gate split and opened inward, letting him through to see that even the path towards the manor was lined with tall hedges.
His brow furrowed at their strange need for privacy, and an unsettling feeling found its way into the depths of his stomach. He took a deep breath in an attempt to settle his nerves and walked down the well-tended cobblestone path. He jumped when the elegant double doors opened for him, his body tensed to bolt. Two Machoke stood within the building, each holding open one of the doors for him. "H-hi... " he breathed out, slowly entering the building.
"I'm sorry if they startled you," the voice from the call box came from just within. Behind a circular counter at the back of the room sat a woman, her appearance reminiscent of a librarian. Her dark brown hair was pulled back out of her face in a loose bun, and hazel wayfarer glasses framed her heart-shaped face pleasantly. Her clothing was casual business, and the smile on her face was welcoming. "Tanner Cole, if I read your ID correctly?"
He gave the woman a sheepish smile, the fair skin of his cheeks starting to turn red beneath his prominent freckles. "Yes, that's right. I'm sorry, I just didn't expect them to open for me... it-it's not because they're Pokemon or anything!" He hurried through the last sentence, thinking back to the flier's stipulations.
He couldn't afford to blow this interview so soon. His face took a nervous expression as he thought to the stack of bills on the small table just inside his doorway, almost all of them stamped with 'OVERDUE.' He'd been job searching for months since he had finished his schooling, but nobody had been willing to call him back about it yet.
The woman giggled behind her hand but smiled warmly. "Oh, they startle just about everyone; don't worry about it." She typed something into the computer to her left before turning back to him. "If you'd like to take a seat, I have some screening questions for you to answer before I send you into a proper interview. Miss Katherine is quite a busy woman, and we just like to make sure that we're only sending in the most suitable applicants." She gestured to the stiff-looking chair that sat in front of her counter with a well-manicured hand.
"Okay, that makes a lot of sense," he tried his best not to mumble as he took a seat. The chair was just as uncomfortable as it had looked: hard and unyielding, but at least it was shaped well. Her personable manner helped set him at ease, but he couldn't help being nervous about the interview. What if the screening questions decided he was a bad candidate? This place was pretty much his last hope if he didn't want to get evicted. He gave her another timid smile as he realized that his expression may have turned concerned.
"Okay, Mr. Cole—"
"You can call me Tanner," he interrupted but shut his mouth quickly with a cringe. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude." He cast his gray eyes downward, flustered.
She just gave him that warm smile again, the perfect face of public relations. "Not to worry, Tanner. I understand. You can call me Elizabeth if you'd like." She typed a little bit more into her computer before she looked him over. "So, Tanner, your ID says that you're 19, is that correct?"
"Yes, my birthday was just a few weeks ago." He could still remember the celebration: a small get-together with his two friends at the beach. Living on an island made a trip to the beach a common thing, but hanging out with his friends wasn't so common anymore now that they had both gotten jobs. It was a fun time while it had lasted, but the memory was tinged with sadness. They used to hang out every weekend, but now it took a celebration to get them together.
"Good, good. Do you think you could tell me a little bit about yourself? What your personality is like, your hobbies, what your social or family life is like? Anything you think might be relevant." Elizabeth clasped her hands together on the counter in front of her, waiting patiently.
He gave her an uneasy look. He always hated this type of question: open-ended, and a great way for him to say too much and miss his opportunity. "Um, I guess I'd say that I'm a little bit shy on the outside, but I warm up very quickly. I'm very determined when I have a goal in mind, and I strive to complete it as best I can." So far so good, that was an answer he had memorized for nearly every interview he went to. The rest of the question wasn't quite as easy.
"As for hobbies, I've always been interested in art... I even performed in drama club quite a bit while I was still in school." While entirely true, he hoped the interest in acting and being in front of an audience would help grease the wheels for his next interview; after all, they were looking for people to participate in films.
"I'd say that's something you have in common with Miss Katherine and the majority of us here. P&H Inc. is a wonderful company when it comes to allowing artistic expression. We're all working hard to bring our customers a pleasing product," she enthused, her smile genuine and broad. "Is there anything else?"
He gave her a small smile back. She was certainly friendly, and her cheer was almost infectious. "Oh, well... My social life is pretty open at the moment. Most of my friends are busy with their new jobs, so I have lots of time available to devote to the company. As for family... We're not all that close." That was putting it lightly. He had come out of the closet to his parents after graduation, and they hadn't taken it well. His mother cried, and his father had thrown him and his belongings literally out on the street. He had told Tanner that if he ever came back, he'd beat the living hell out of him until it turned him straight or killed him. He had sold most of his possessions to cobble together enough money for a new apartment and some leeway.
"I'm sorry to hear that, but you won't be alone: plenty of our employees understand what it's like to be estranged from their families. I'm sure if you're hired that you'll make quite a lot of friends here. We're almost like a family of our own." Her nails clacked noisily on the keys as she typed. Even her resting face was pleasant. "What would you say is your favorite Pokemon, if you had to choose only one?"
Tanner's brows knit together at the question. That was a strange one, something he had never been asked at an interview before. Maybe it was some kind of hidden personality test, where if you chose the wrong Pokemon they would think that you're unsuitable for the job. "Okay, um..." he stalled, trying to think of all the Pokemon he could remember off-hand, there were hundreds of them, after-all.
He had always really liked Butterfree, how they seemed to be without a worry or care in the world, but was that too girly? Did it make him seem flighty? That wouldn't be any good. Helioptile had always made him grin, with its goofy smile and derpy eyes, but maybe that was a bad thing too, that he found amusement in its unique features? He'd have to go with his other favorite.
"I've always liked Golduck, and I guess maybe been a little jealous of how good he is at swimming. I wanted one as a partner, but I didn't end up adventuring..." His dad had refused to allow him to become a Pokemon trainer at the usual age of eleven, instead insisting that he go on to higher education to 'make something of himself.' Not that he could manage it now.
"He's quite a handsome Pokemon, and fairly popular I'd say," Elizabeth agreed, finishing up her typing before giving Tanner a welcoming smile. "Those are all of the questions I have for you, and I think you'll fit right in. Just let me give Miss Katherine a call, and we'll set up your interview."
A large smile spread across his face and his shoulders relaxed in relief. At least he could go on to the next stage of the hiring process, and hopefully, he wouldn't end up botching it. "Thank you so much." He felt his chest swell with excitement as she picked up the phone on her desk and pressed speed dial.
"Miss Katherine? Mhm... Yes, I believe he's a great match. Mhm, okay, I'll send him in right away." She placed the receiver back in its cradle and smiled broadly. "She's quite excited to meet you! Just head straight through the door behind me on the right, and she'll be ready to conduct your second interview."
Tanner couldn't help but grin, his heart racing as he stood and shook her hand. "Thank you again, Elizabeth." He hastily fixed his tousled, caramel blond hair, and smoothed his gray, button-down shirt before he stepped over to the door, swallowing nervously as he turned the knob and pushed it open.
The inner room was quite spacious, the walls a calming cream color and the carpet a rich chocolate. The mahogany desk, chairs, and bookcase within looked expensive and well taken care of. A woman sat at the desk with wavy ginger hair loose below her shoulders. Her green eyes were striking and her gaze calculating, but her smile was congenial. She wore a professional, if quite elegant, draped dress that accentuated her figure nicely.
"Mr. Cole... Tanner," she corrected herself, "it's a pleasure to meet you." Her voice was calm and on the low side of feminine, but her painted lips spread pleasantly as she extended her hand towards him.
"Yes, thank you very much for seeing me, Miss Katherine." He took her hand, careful not to shake too gently or firmly; he had always heard that could ruin your chances of getting a job, although he wasn't quite sure why. He slid into the chair in front of her desk and tried his best not to fidget beneath her searching gaze.
For how the company was advertising—paper fliers stuck to a town messageboard—the actual estate seemed to be very upscale. Maybe the fliers were just for extras on a movie set, so they didn't need to advertise anywhere fancy? But why would an extra need to go through such a screening process?
"Now, before I begin with the interview, are there any questions you'd like to ask me?" Katherine looked at him expectantly, fingers steepled on her desk's polished surface.
"Oh, um..." Tanner paused, caught off guard by her offer. "I was curious about why the grounds are so private, I mean, with the hedges and the fencing and all," he mumbled through the last of the sentence, slightly embarrassed. Was it a stupid question?
Miss Katherine chuckled quietly, and sat back in her chair, arms crossing beneath her chest as she seemed to contemplate the question. "P&H Inc, as you should already know, is a company that produces films. What you may not know, however, is that we shoot all of our films on this property. So, as with every company who produces visual media, we want to make sure that our production stays out of the public's eye until it is finished and ready for distribution." She smiled and glanced over to an adjacent door as it opened.
A Gallade stepped into the room quietly, a tea tray in his hands. "Ah, right on time. Thank you." Katherine smiled at the Gallade, her eyes seeming to look him over before settling on his face as he placed the kettle, saucers, and cups on the mahogany desk. "Would you like some tea, Tanner?" She asked as the Gallade poured some for her, adding just a honeyed spoon to it.
"Yes, please." He could use something to drink at this point. His throat was dry from nervousness, and he figured it might be impolite to refuse. He watched as the Gallade poured some tea for him as well, and offered him a spoon. He held up a hand in refusal, he preferred to drink his tea as it came naturally: earthy, calming, and a little bitter.
Miss Katherine smiled at the Gallade and stroked his arm affectionately as he left the room. "Was that the only question you had?" She asked as she stirred her tea. She took a sip from her cup, and warm content spread over her features.
"Actually, I've also wondered... what do the letters P&H stand for?" Tanner asked sheepishly, taking a sip of his hot tea. So far, he hadn't seen any signs that told him, nor had he met anyone with a name that could fill in the letters, although 'Katherine' could be just a first name. He gripped his cup tightly as butterflies welled up in his stomach. Was he ruining his interview? What if she thought he was stupid or naive?
"Ah, yes. This is a question we get often." She set her cup back down and leaned in, resting her elbows on her desk and clasping her hands together. "Pokemon & Humans Incorporated. As you've already seen, here at P&H Inc, we work very intimately with our resident Pokemon. They are just as important to our business as our human employees, and I wanted the name of this company to reflect that." Katherine watched him closely as she informed him, her green eyes searching his face; for what, he wasn't sure, but it was odd to be scrutinized in such a way. After a few moments, she went back to her tea. "If those are all of your questions, I believe we should get to yours."
"Yes, that's all... I do like Pokemon quite a lot; I even wanted to be a trainer when I was young. It... didn't end up happening, but I'm sure I won't mind working closely with them." Tanner smiled at her and felt relieved when she smiled back. Maybe this would be his lucky break after all.
"Wonderful. I used to be a trainer myself you know. Most all of the Pokemon here are ones that I had befriended on my journey to catch them all. I decided to settle down after a while, though, and pursue other dreams, as you can see." She cleared her throat and straightened up in her seat, looking at him quite seriously.
"Now, I'd like you to answer all of these questions with complete honesty because I assure you that even if you lie and say what you think that I'd like to hear, the truth will come out quickly. Depending on how egregious the lie is, it may mean that your employ would be immediately terminated."
Tanner looked at her nervously, his stomach getting queasy all over again at the prospect of messing up. "Oh... I mean, of course." He clenched his hands together, trying to dispel the urge to fidget under her penetrating gaze. He could almost feel himself sweating as she stared at him, and let out a relieved breath when she nodded and seemed content with his answer.
"Good. Now that we have a mutual understanding, I'll ask you a few questions, and we'll figure out if you're right for our company." She went back to her congenial smile and relaxed in her chair. "Have you had any experience in films at all?"
"No, I mean... Nothing professional. Some people might have me on tape from my school days back when I did drama, though." He stumbled through his answer, worried that any amount of omission would disqualify him.
"Why is it that you want to work for us?" Her gaze was steady, and her features stayed unchanged between the two questions. Was she trying to set him up? Saying that you were there for the money was always a really bad idea, at least according to every job seeker's help article he had ever read. But what else was there to say? He wasn't particularly passionate about being involved in movies.
"I..." He paused, contemplating his options. If he lied at all, she would fire him as soon as she found out, but if he told the truth, she might not hire him at all... "I know I'm not supposed to say this in an interview, but I really, really need this job for the money." His heart sped up, and he nearly felt like throwing up. What would he do if she rejected him?
"Our ad didn't even mention how much you'd be paid, are you sure it would be adequate?" Her face was steely, unwavering from its neutral facade.
"My financial situation is quite desperate... I'm sure it would help," he told her honestly, hoping that maybe she wouldn't feel like turning him away would be easy.
Miss Katherine nodded slightly, and took another drink of her tea, finally breaking her pointed gaze. "Would you be willing to perform in front of a camera while partially or fully nude?" She asked, her eyes directed back at him.
Tanner flushed a deep pink all the way to his ears and felt his stomach flop as the corner of Miss Katherine's lip twitched in amusement. "Nude?" He swallowed deeply as she nodded to him. He had never thought about being nude on camera before, although he had seen plenty of films and plays that required it. She did only ask if he was willing, though, not if he would... maybe she was just testing his boundaries. "I've never really thought about it... but I guess so."
"We're down to our last few questions, and you're doing very well so far." She finally gave him a smile, and he visibly relaxed. "However, these last ones are the few that will make or break your opportunity at this company. So answer carefully and honestly." She leaned forward, her hands clasped together atop the glossy wood of her desk. "How do you feel about films that portray humans and Pokemon in intimate relationships?"
"Intimate?" Tanner asked, his brows knitting together.
"Sexual." She clarified, watching him carefully.
His eyebrows shot up, and his gray eyes opened wide in shock as he realized the implications of their interview. 'Oh Arceus, what have I gotten myself into?' His muscles tensed as he sat in the chair, his body stuck in fight or flight mode. 'What should I do? I mean... I can't...' "Isn't that illegal?" He finally blurted out, his expression finally settling into worry.
Miss Katherine let out a heavy sigh as she sat back in her chair, resting her clasped hands in her lap. "It is a very murky legal area, but it is not expressly illegal. To avoid any litigation concerning consent, every Pokemon's trainer has signed forms agreeing that they approve of their Pokemon's participation in these films.
"At the same time, the trainers are not allowed to participate in the films in any way, whether that be performing, directing, or even camera work due to concerns that they could be coercing their Pokemon into it. That's why you will never see me on a set."
"But... I mean, Poképhilia is illegal, so how can you even film it?" Tanner asked hesitantly. He wasn't sure he could go through with this even if everything was on the up-and-up. Having sex with a Pokemon? Sure, some of them were pleasant to look at, but... they weren't people. He hadn't even had sex with a person yet, awkward groping not included.
"Well, Tanner, just as prostitution is illegal, but pornographic films are not, so it is with Poképhilia. As I said, the laws are murky, but I can assure you that if things go poorly and there's any kind of criminal investigation, that I will be the one to take the full legal responsibility. None of my employees will be held accountable." She smiled at him, seemingly pleased that his only complaints thus far were legalities.
"I... um, I don't... I don't know." He mumbled, staring down at his hands in his lap. He needed the money, but could he really do it? What if his friends found out? What is his dad found out? That thought made him sick.
"That's okay, Tanner. You don't have to know right now, but I think you would make a great addition to our company." Katherine leaned forward and set a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Take some time to think about it, and pay us another visit if you decide it's right for you." She smiled pleasantly and gave his shoulder a gentle squeeze before she sat back in her chair.
"If it helps convince you at all, I'll let you know that employees are paid based on which Pokemon they do a scene with and what actions are performed. The very least you'll be paid for a scene is $200. And that's with our most common Pokemon and only using your hands."
Tanner took a deep breath as he heard the amount of money, but tried his best not to look too entirely shocked. He could make $200 from one scene? That would make a hell of a dent in his bills. "I... I'll think about it," he breathed and stood up from his chair. He needed to go home. It was getting hard to breathe in there, and he needed some time to calm down and think.
"Of course. You know where we'll be."
The bike ride home was a blur for Tanner, and he found himself outside of his apartment building with his mind still in a haze. He took his bike into the building with him, carrying it up the stairs to his small apartment. A notice was posted on his door, white and formal looking. 'Eviction Notice,' it read, and Tanner's forehead thumped heavily against the wooden door. It looked like he didn't have much of a choice.
