Tohru had been quiet and lost in thought for days, Yuki and Kyo were both worried about her. Kyo particularly, for he'd told her something that could change their entire relationship before this period of moping had started, and while she'd said at the time that she didn't hate him for it, she'd then withdrawn into herself and he didn't know why.
He worried what she was thinking, that maybe he'd unsettled her too much with what he'd said, what he'd done, and she was fretting over how to push him away without hurting his feelings.
It was stupid, he'd been stupid, he didn't know what he was doing and he felt so conflicted. The unjustness of being the cat and being denied a life that was, right now, being tortuously waved in front of his face was too much to bear. He wanted to scream and rage against it, he wanted to take Tohru in his arms and hold onto her like an anchor in a storm, like holding her would stop him being swept into the black oblivion that was opening up around him. He'd almost done it so many times, been so close to just pulling her in and crying out her name.
He stopped his thoughts and scolded himself, you can't do that to her Kyo, there's no way she feels like that about you, you'd scare her, you'd lose her, you'd lose the days that you have left being by her side. And he'd transform, although that part bothered him less, being a cat cradled in Tohru's arms was something he often dreamt of, remembering when she'd brought him back from the forest after seeing his true form.
"Kyo-kun?" Tohru's voice startled him out of his thoughts and he did an instinctive cat like jump, Tohru giggled and his heart ached at the sound of it. "Sorry Kyo-kun I didn't mean to startle you, what were you thinking about?"
He looked into her eyes and found he couldn't form words, "I, you, I, er no, nothing, sorry, I was just zoning out." He looked away with a blush as Tohru started to ask him what he wanted for dinner.
Yuki gave Kyo a calculated look, he'd noticed the air between the two and he didn't like the feelings it swelled up inside him. He knew the cats fate, he knew he should pity him, he knew Kyo would never be able to have Tohru, or anyone else. Watching them together made him imagine a torrent of things that he just didn't know how to deal with. He felt sure he loved Tohru and he didn't want to deny Kyo of his time with Tohru before his captivity, but at the same time he wanted her himself, and some deeper part of him wanted Kyo to be jealous of him, not the other way around.
His feelings towards Kyo were so complicated he couldn't even work them out himself. When he was young all he'd wanted was to be the friend of the charismatic orange haired cat, he'd wanted it so badly, he'd idolised him for a while thinking the orange haired boy was so free and so loved, he hadn't known about his real background back then. But Kyo turned on him every time they met, Yuki didn't understand why but something about Kyo's hate for him hurt him deeply and made his anger boil inside him. Yuki kept trying to push down the small voice of young Yuki desperately wanting to be Kyo's friend and resolutely told himself he didn't care about the stupid cat or what he thought of him.
He could see the emotion between Kyo and Tohru growing stronger each day. He wanted to make some bold move, to sway Tohru's attention to him, to make her breath catch in her throat the way it did when Kyo was near her. His fists clenched, that stupid cat didn't even notice how she reacted to his presence, although that was probably because he was busy panicking about his own reactions. Dumb cat. His fists relaxed and he immediately felt bad again for getting angry about it. No, if he wanted Tohru he couldn't blame Kyo for her not noticing him enough, he needed to make it happen, he needed to win her over in his own way.
Kyo wolfed down his breakfast and muttered something about studying for the quiz next week before ducking out of the room, he still felt unsettled by his swirling thoughts and didn't trust himself around Tohru today.
Yuki wondered what he could do that would gain him some special time with Tohru in an indirect way, his gaze traveled round the room while in thought and landed on a deck of playing cards. He recalled Miss Honda having them play a game with her friends because she knew it was something he'd longed for, there's so many experiences I've never had, he thought, all those things that young people do with their friends that I've never done. He suddenly smiled, it was perfect, he knew what to do.
"Miss Honda?"
"Yes Soma?"
"I know this might sound strange, but I've been thinking about some experiences I'd like to try out, they probably sound like things you'd take for granted, but there's so much I've missed out on up till now, and, I might not have much time before..."
He trailed off catching what he was saying, he didn't know that Tohru already knew about their planned captivity and panicked about how to end the sentence, "before, er, we er, graduate, and well, we probably won't live together after that."
Tohru tilted her head as if thinking, then looked a little panicked, "Oh no!" She exclaimed. Then she began talking in her panicked high speed mode "Your right! It's not even a year, it's too soon, I haven't even thought about getting a job and finding a place to live, I don't want to think about...." She trailed off "that" she finished as an icy cold thought hit her, how could she even worry about things like that when Yuki, Kyo, and all the others would never even have that chance. Tears suddenly sprang up in her eyes, and now Yuki must think I'm so selfish!
Great start Yuki, he thought to himself. He gently took her hand, "Miss Honda, it's ok, please don't panic, Shigure won't kick you out if you need somewhere, you've still got time, and, we should also be enjoying this last year of high school, together." He put an emphasis on the word together and lifted her hand close to his face as he said it, smiling gently.
She stopped and gazed into his eyes, a small blush spread on her cheeks and Yuki felt a rush of warmth seeing her blush for him and not Kyo.
"Yes, yes! We can do anything Soma, whatever you'd like, oh but there's a lot of things I've never done either, mom didn't have a lot of money so we tended to do simple things together, what did you have in mind?"
"Well, I've never been to a theme park, and there's one our classmates were talking about last week, it's only an hour away on the train, and it's a nice day today, I'm happy to pay for us, as it's my selfish wish to go", he made a brave move and cupped her face with one hand as he slowly dipped his voice to say the last part, it was almost mean but he knew that small touch would make her less able to say no to him. It felt a bit like cheating, but his resolve was set, he would do whatever worked, there wasn't enough time to hold back.
"Oh no, I couldn't let you do that..." She started.
Yuki dropped his gaze and his hand and sadly sighed, "it's ok, you can say if you don't want to spend the day with me", he lifted his eyes sadly to hers. I really am the worst he thought, like a child!
It had the desired effect though, "oh no Soma of course I do, I just didn't want you to have to pay for me"
He flashed her a dazzling smile, and then an image of his brother popped into his head and he pushed down the thought that his actions were emulating his brothers way of behaving.
"Please let me" he said, "you've done so much for me, it would mean a lot to me to be able to give you something in return."
"Oh but I'm happy to do all those things, and really you've done so much for me too!" She saw a determined glint in Yuki's eye and finally relented. "Ok, but I reserve the right to treat you another day in return."
Yuki laughed at that. "If you insist Miss Honda."
"I'll go and get ready then!" said Tohru smiling back her eyes sparkling, "I can't believe we're going to a theme park! Oh we should invite Kyo, and Arisa and Hana-chan."
Damn, thought Yuki, how can I say no to inviting her friends without being a jerk. "Miss Honda, it might sound selfish but, I'd like a day without Kyo, and to be really honest, I'd like a day just with you, being around the others, sometimes feels very exhausting, could we invite them to our next trip?"
"Of course!" said Tohru, "I understand, it would have been nice to share the day with them but there'll be other days we can do something all together, just you and me then" she smiled and blushed a little and then ran out to get ready.
Yuki felt elated, he wouldn't waste this chance, he would make it count and do his best to sway her heart however he could.
