A Bitter Antique
Vincent’s son, Ciel, was born ill and throughout his childhood he was in and out of hospitals. He was good at hiding his true emotions just like any Phantomhive, but Vincent’s wife Rachel knew he was sad and lonely. So he had suggested they get him a companion to have during hospital stays and to bond with until he’s well enough to meet others. Somehow she found a classic Bitter Rabbit from an old antique store. Once Ciel was given the toy he seemed to be happier. When he was about five he started talking to it, which was cute at first but as he got older it became worrying.
Ciel was well enough now to make new friends. Real friends. But he seemed to hate meeting other people. He refused to go to parties and outings. Preferring to stay in his room with Bitter Rabbit. It felt like Vincent was losing his son again but this time to a toy instead of an illness. Ciel rarely seemed to talk to him, though to be honest the man had been doing some overtime on his work. But the boy could just knock on his office door if he wanted to talk.
One day, when the boy was ten, he went to Ciel’s room and opened the door. As expected he was in a conversation with the bloody doll. “Ciel.” A grunt was his response. “I believe it is time you focus on reality and not your play world. You’re old enough and well enough now to not need a toy like that anymore. So, you will either sell it or give it away. If you sell it you can keep the money.” He figured that offering that will make the decision easier. He was expecting a big emotional meltdown or something, had even prepared himself for it. After all, the boy couldn’t be very proper if he didn’t interact with anyone. So he was a bit shocked as his son looked up with a very cold stare.
Ciel’s eyes narrowed. One sapphire blue, the other milky having gone blind during an illness. “No father. He is mine and the only one that actually listens to me. Go back to your office.” He turned back to Bitter Rabbit and started talking softly, fully ignoring his father.
Vincent’s eyes widened, taken by shock. While he suddenly wanted to just grab the toy he didn’t want to hurt his son. “Do not speak to me like that Ciel. If you want us to listen then you have to actually talk to us.” He decided to take a calm reasoning approach. This was probably Ciel’s way of denying it.
Ciel slowly stood up, still holding Bitter. He turned to Vincent. “I try. Every day I try. But you don’t notice. Too busy with your work.” The boy scowled. “And mother is always busy with her social crap. Parties are the only thing she cares about.”
His milky eye began to glow making Vincent take a step back. “What…”
The boy took a step forward. “I am done with being a temporary event that you only attend when it benefits you. I am not a charity case. Sebastian says he can make you go away.”
The Earl Phantomhive had never heard his son speak like that before. “A charity case? Of course you’re not. I just don’t always have time.” Ciel glared harder and this time the rabbit’s eyes glowed red. Vincent swallowed in a spike of fear as shadows began to grow and surround them. He was wondering where his wife was. He hadn’t seen or heard her for a while. “Who is Sebastian?”
Bitter Rabbit’s fuzzy mouth grinned to show sharp teeth. “That would be me. I have lived with your son since he was three. Watched the neglect. The disappointment. Breaking trust and promises.”
Vincent suddenly realized a figure was coming out of the shadows that had been growing even more behind Ciel. He couldn’t seem make his voice work.
One hand with long claw-like fingers rested on Ciel’s shoulder. “I offer him what you refuse to give. Guidance and care.”
“I will survive without you.” Ciel had an almost crazed look now. “I will prove to everyone who has ever mocked me for being weak, that I need none of you pathetic humans.”
Sebastian smirked. “And in return for my care, I get to devour that delicious soul once he reaches his goal.” He ran a long tongue over his lips. “I guess I must thank you for almost seasoning his soul to perfection~”
Ciel merely grunted. “Yeah, yeah. Anyway, I had planned on keeping you guys for a bit longer but you had to go and mess it up.” The boy simply sat back on the bed with the doll. “Get rid of him Sebastian.”
Vincent’s eyes widened in fear, unable to move. Too scared. He watched the demon bow to his son and heard him say, “Yes my Lord.” And then all he knew was red and pain. And then nothing.

He wasn’t sure how long he had been in that shop. Definitely for years. Many would look and consider getting an original Bitter Rabbit. But the store owner would price him in a ridiculous fashion. One day he saw a woman walk up to the store front window. She saw the Bitter Rabbit and gave a soft smile. The chime over the door signaled her coming in. Soon Bitter was being picked up to be looked at closer.
The woman smiled again as she felt how soft he was. “He’s perfect. How much?”
This was usually where the price would give the customer second thoughts. But this time when it was given, she accepted. How interesting.
“Ciel will love him.”
Bitter watched from button eyes as the woman carried him to a car and eventually into a children’s hospital. Ah. A gift for a sick child possibly. They were soon enough going into the room that held two hospital beds, only one of them having an occupant.
“Ciel darling.”
A small boy with blue-gray locks looked up from a picture book, sapphire eyes locking on the toy. “Is that for me?” The eyes widened and a smile appeared on his face.
Bitter guessed the woman had nodded as he was soon being handed over to Ciel. He could feel the delicate way the boy held him, as if he’d break. And then he was being hugged tight. He could feel the sadness in the child. The almost desperation to not let him go. It was beautiful.
He enjoyed just watching the life at first. The boy’s name was Ciel Phantomhive and he was three. He was apparently born sick and while he was slowly getting better, he was still in the hospital a lot. Bitter became his companion for in and out of the hospital. Though Bitter noticed something interesting. While Ciel was at the hospital he would get visits from his mother every day and his father would often visit as well. But during the times that Ciel was actually able to stay home, the two were rarely interested in him. After a year the painful duality of it was obviously having an effect on their child but they didn’t notice.
So about two years after he was bought, Bitter made contact. He watched as the child came into the room and closed the door behind him. He was obviously upset about something but trying not to give in. “What’s wrong Ciel?”
The child blinked and looked around. His eyes landed on the rabbit sitting on his bed. “Bitter?” He seemed to consider the possibility of this happening. Then he seemed to decide he didn’t care. So he came over and sat on the bed before pulling the toy into his lap. “Mother said she can’t read to me because she has to go to a party.” He made a face at that word. He hated his mother’s parties.
Bitter felt himself be pulled tight. “Well. If you hold the book in front of me, I can read it to you. I can let you know when to turn the page.”
Ciel’s eyes widened and he looked at the doll’s eyes. “Really?” He smiled wide. “Okay! One second.” He set the bunny down and then quickly got the book he wanted. He set it up so that he was holding Bitter in his lap with the book in front of the rabbit. “There!” The child was then happily read a story that his mother had been promising to read to him for three weeks.
For the next five years the two bonded. Bitter giving him everything his parents refused to offer. Ciel went to him for everything and brought him almost everywhere.
One day Ciel came into the room, his eye cold. He immediately went to the bed, sat, and pulled Bitter into his lap. “Bitter. You’re a demon, right?” In all the years he’d never actually asked what the doll was. He must have had a strong feeling but he seemed to need it confirmed now.
“Yes I am. What has happened?” The rabbit’s eyes glowed softly.
Ciel ignored the question. “That means you can make contracts right?”
This gave the demon pause. “Yes. I help you complete your goal and in return I get your soul.” He was very curious as to what sparked this inquiry.
The boy took a deep breath. “So. If I wanted to make a contract how would I do that?”
Bitter smiled and nuzzled closer, the doll actually moving. “Tell me what you desire Ciel. I can make it come true. You know I do not lie.”
Without hesitation the boy replied, “I want them gone. I want to prove I can survive without them. Without any of them.” He pulled the toy back a bit to look into red eyes.
The eyes glowed softly. “How will you prove it?” True interest was in the charming voice.
Ciel thought about it for a few moments. “Well the best way would be to stay alive.” He frowned. “But that would be too easy with you keeping me safe.”
Bitter watched the boy nibble on his lower lip. “True. But then how shall it be proved?”
Ciel shrugged. “You can decide that Bitter.”
A few moments of silence followed it. “Do you understand what you are saying Ciel? You are giving me control of the contract.” It was a strangely neutral tone.
The small bow mouth turned to a frown, annoyance in that one clear eye. “Duh. I know that. But I have you and I’ll always have you. Even when I’m dead.” He paused, unguarded emotion flitting across his face. “Right?”
A black hand with long claws came out of the shadows that surrounded them. It gently took Ciel’s chin to lift his gaze, meeting catlike eyes that glowed the same color as the toy’s. “Say my name and enact the contract.”
Ciel considered the perfect name for a few seconds. Then he decided. “Be with me forever. Sebastian.” The demon appeared fully. But this time in the form of the most beautiful man that Ciel had ever seen. He was perfect!
Sebastian knelt down, a hand with black colored nails took one of the young boy’s hands off of the toy and held it. He brushed the softest lips across the knuckles out of respect. “Yes, my Lord.”

Sebastian’s long tongue licked the blood from his fingers.
A disinterested voice came from the figure on the bed. “Make sure to clean it up. Then prepare the cover. I’ll pack my own stuff.” He got off the bed and began packing necessities into a few suitcases. They had planned to burn down the home after killing Vincent and Rachel but not for a while. He had wanted to guarantee his future outside the home. He no longer worried about that as he knew that Sebastian would help him reach his goal. Otherwise the demon wouldn’t get his soul. He may not know when that goal is met but he trusted Sebastian to know.
The raven had figured out a cover story and set up the ‘evidence’ to back it up. Ciel didn’t bother to ask about it so the demon didn’t explain.
Soon, the trees flew by yet he could still smell the smoke. His past was burning and his future unknown. And things had never felt so right. He held the stuffed toy tight to his chest as Sebastian raced to wherever they would be staying. He held Bitter Rabbit. The doll held the demon. And the demon held his Master. No wonder it was in an antique shop after the last Master had been collected. Ciel wondered in the back of his mind if it will return to a shop after his soul is eaten. But that didn’t matter. Even in an antique shop, he will remain with Sebastian.
