AN: You may notice some age discrepancies. I was going off that Ichigo was 15 when the aliens left. So, four years later would make her 19. Kish was around 16 and is now 20. Mint and Lettuce are both 19 now as well. Pudding was 12 making her now 16, same for Tart. Zakuro is now 21. And Pai is now around 22.
This chapter is innocent enough, but this story will definitely move into the adult realm soon. You were warned.
“..” - Talking. ‘…’ - Thinking. “text” - Talking telepathically
Thank you, and enjoy :) Oh and KishxIchigo forever ^^;
Lock And Key
Chapter 1: Distant Hearts
An electrical pop was heard followed by a thump within the subspace aircraft hangar. “Abyss’s Bliss, that hurt,” Kish hissed, popping his burnt finger into his mouth. “I told you the casing on that wire wasn’t stable,” scolded Pai as he came around the corner. “Yeah, yeah. I know. I just have this awful feeling that this ship needs to be fully repaired already and it’s taking too long,” replied Kish in frustration. “I really wish you’d tell me what’s going on with you. It’s been four years and suddenly you have this need to go back. Why?” Pai stood with his arms crossed glaring down at Kish, awaiting his answer. Sighing, Kish popped the maintenance cover over the exposed circuit board and stood up. Running a hand through his hair, “I told you I don’t know. Something just feels off and it’s making me twitchy.” Kish’s eyes slid to the floor. He hated keeping secrets from his friend and cousin, but Pai would be seriously pissed if he knew the truth. Pai was about to confront him before a voice called from outside the ship.
“Yo, Kish, ya here?” ‘Perfect timing,’ thought Kish as he teleported out of the ship and into the hangar bay. With a ripple, Kish appeared before his friend Tek. Tek was not only his best friend besides his cousin's Pai and Tart, but he was also his second in command. Kish was now the Commander General of the entirety of planet Cynicla's military forces and Tek was his Vice General. Standing at six foot, he was the same height and build as Kish, however, that was where the similarity ended. Tek's hair was a deep rich black that reached almost to his waist. His bangs were long and framed either side of his face, sprouting up from his widow's peak before curling against his cheeks in front of his ears and ending just below his jawline. Eyes the palest of blues twinkled with mischief partially hidden by those bangs. Toned and lean muscles stretched under alabaster skin from many years of hard training in the military as well as living in the harsh environment of the planet before the return of Kish and his cousins. Eyeing his friend, “If you've come to remind me of today's inspection, I told you to handle it. Besides, if they can't do a simple routine inspection without me then this planet is doomed. Then again, with you handling things, it probably already is,” he teased.
“Prick.”
“Ass.”
“Cocky bastard,” Tek Continued with finality and a grin.
“That may be half right, but…” Kish trailed off as he suddenly gripped his vest over his heart in pain. It felt like someone was simultaneously ripping his heart out through his rib cage, while at the same time crushing it. Stumbling forwards, Kish fell to his knee in agony as he tried to breathe. His mind called out to Pai who appeared beside him almost immediately. “What happened?” Pai asked looking back and forth between Tek and his cousin. “I have no idea, we were just talking and he collapsed like he was in pain,” Tek replied, worry evident in his voice and eyes. Kish's free hand slapped to the floor to brace himself as a single word burned through his mind. “KISH!” Ichigo had screamed out his name in absolute pain and anguish.
Pai glared down at his cousin, “That.. That’s not possible. That was loud and strong enough for even me to hear through you. How in the Abyss was she able to reach you this far?” Taking a few shuddering breaths his hands still clutched over his heart, Kish looked up at his cousin with tears gathered at the corner of his amber eyes. “For the love of the All Bright!” Pai hissed. “I knew it. I knew you chose her! You're an Abyssal fool. How could you choose her!?”
“Someone want to clue me in?” asked Tek as he held his hand out to help his shaky friend. With Tek’s help, Kish got to his feet, but placed a hand on his friend's shoulder to steady himself. The sudden pain and telepathic link had completely drained him. Ignoring Tek’s question for the moment, Kish glared at pie, “It wasn't like I had a real choice. You knew how much I loved her. Still love her. That uneasiness I've been feeling. I have to go to her. She sounded like she was in agony. What if something's happened to her? What if she's hurt?” he pleaded.
“Wait. You talking about that Mew girl. The one back on Earth? What does she have to do with this?” Tek asked confused. He knew his friend had developed feelings for the Earth girl while he had been stationed there. Kish had told him that himself. But he didn't understand what she had to do with Kish's current pain. Pai narrowed his eyes at Kish, but answered Tek, “The fool chose her as his mate. Apparently they're bonded enough that she was able to reach his mind.”
Tek sucked in a breath, “Are you freaking kidding me! Well, I guess that explains your complete lack of interest in females. But really!? I thought she was your enemy? Not to mention, didn't you tell me she was in love with someone else? And it's been four years. Why now all of a sudden?”
Kish hissed at the painful reminders. “I have no idea, but I have to find out. I don't care what you say Pai, I'm going back. And now.” Pai saw the panic and worry clear in his cousin's eyes. Slumping his shoulders in defeat, “If you and Tart can pull double duty with the council and keep them off my back, I can have the ship fixed in a week.” “A week! But what if she's hurt, Pai!? I need to leave now. As it is, it's over a weeklong flight there,” Kish pleaded. Sighing, “I'll do what I can, but I make no promises.” “Thank you cousin.” Pai only nodded before teleporting back outside the ship. Turning to Tek, Kish clasped him on the shoulder, “Come friend. Let's go find Tart. The three of us are going to be extremely busy the next few days and I have a few things to tell you that I may have left out.” “You think?” growled Tek. “Come on. It's almost dinner so Tart should be at our place. I'll meet you in the kitchen.” Tek nodded in agreement and the air around him rippled as he teleported to Kish and Tart's home which was just down the street. Before following, Kish closed his eyes tightly. Using every bit of his love in his heart, he thought a single word towards the woman he loved more than anything.
Meanwhile...
It was the middle of the night on Earth and Ichigo once again found herself wide awake and drenched in sweat. Fear and pain coursed through her as her nightmare replayed in her mind. She’d been having the same nightmare on and off for the last three weeks. It was always the same. Helpless to watch as the alien Kish gave his life for her. Dying in her arms. But this time, something had changed.
This time, when Deep Blue ran his sword through Kish, he survived. He had teleported in front of her, taking a knee as blood seeped between the fingers of the hand he had pressed to his wound. He had reached his left hand out to her behind him and she had twined her fingers with his. He tugged her to his side. Tears were streaming down her face as she locked eyes with his golden gaze. “Why, Kish?” she managed to get out between sobs. Coughing as a small trickle of blood left the corner of his mouth, he lifted his lips and flashed a fang in his trademark smirk. “You know why, Kitten. It's because I love you.” This time, when he leaned towards her, their lips met. Not only that, but she kissed him back for all she was worth. He licked her lips for entrance, and she complied. His tongue slid deep, tasting every crevice of her mouth. With a sigh, Kish pulled away. “Wait Kish. No! I can't lose you!” she pleaded, clenching her hands in his shirt. “Does this mean you'll be mine?” he asked, his eyes never leaving hers. “Yes! Anything! Just please don't leave me,” she begged. His smirk shifted to a full genuine smile. “Thank you, Kitten. At least I got to hear you say it before I go.” He turned his attention back to Deep Blue and his eyes hardened with determination as his smile became a hard line. “To finish this,” he hissed. Stumbling to his feet, he summoned his dragon sais. He teleported forwards, his sais aiming for Deep Blue’s heart and throat. But Deep Blue was faster. He brought his large sword up and deflected Kish while he wrapped his other hand around Kish's neck. With a deafening crack, Deep Blue snapped Kish’s neck and dropped him to the floor in a lifeless heap. Ichigo couldn't hold back the scream that tore from her lips in the form of Kish's name. Her heart was shattered as she watched Kish give his life for her. She had shot up in bed, still screaming his name in her head, tears streaming down her face, and her hand clutching at her heart that felt like it had been hollowed out.
Her parents rushed in. Apparently, she had been screaming his name aloud as well. Thankfully, they understood. She had broken down and told them all about being a Mew Mew and about Kish and the other aliens. She'd even told them what had happened during the final battle after she had had nightmares in that first month. She had to explain why she kept waking up in tears screaming either Kish’s or Masaya's name. They were surprised and worried for their little girl but took it surprisingly well. As they sat on her bed and tried to comfort her from this latest nightmare, Ichigo swore she heard a voice in her head. A voice she had missed terribly these last few years. A voice that simply asked, “Kitten?”
The next afternoon, Ichigo found herself sprawled in the grass under a shady tree in the park near the cafe. She had already called into work telling them she wouldn't be in today. There was no way she would be able to focus with last night's nightmare on replay in her mind's eye. Four years. It had been four long years since she had last seen Kish and the other aliens. She was now nineteen and had opted out of college. She didn't feel like that was where her life was meant to go.
She still worked at the cafe almost every day along with Lettuce and Pudding. Though, Lettuce only worked weekends because she was going to college and Pudding only worked there three to four times a week because her father had finally returned and had opened a Dojo. Pudding's father taught all the different fighting styles that he had mastered on his worldly travels. And, now at sixteen, Pudding was starting to take over some of the classes herself. Mint and Zakuro would stop by occasionally to catch up, but both were extremely busy with their new careers. Mint had graduated from Juilliard and was becoming a renowned ballet dancer. Zakuro had landed a lead role in an upcoming blockbuster movie. All the Mew Mews seemed to have found their place, but for the last two years, Ichigo had felt stuck, or left behind rather.
It had taken a week after the final battle before she had been able to tell the others what had happened. Though she knew the aliens that had sacrificed themselves had been revived, she still felt pain when she thought of them. Both Kish and Tart had specifically died for her. It had temporarily broken her. She spent almost every night crying herself to sleep then waking up crying from nightmares. Masaya had comforted her many times. Had listened as she poured her feelings out. She probably wouldn't have survived that first month if it hadn't been for him, and she had loved him even more for it. When she had finally gotten the courage, she told the girls, Ryou, and Keiichiro everything that had happened inside the ship. Masaya had held her hand the entire time, but when she got to Kish's sacrifice, he had excused himself and left the cafe. She had looked at him with hurt and confusion in her eyes but continued her story. He later admitted that that was one of the few clear memories that he had of the night before he had taken over Deep Blue. He could clearly see himself stab Kish. But the real truth didn't come out until well over a year later.
Ichigo and Masaya had been a perfectly happy couple. They spent as much time together as their schedules would allow and were very much in love. However, Masaya left for England for college and Ichigo had stayed behind. After graduation, she just didn’t have it in her for college. After all, she was still technically a Mew Mew. And though predacite sightings were a rarity, they did still happen. Probably some accidental leftovers from Kish and the others. They were weak and she took care of most on her own, only calling on the others occasionally. She didn’t mind honestly. It gave her a purpose. Something she found herself laughing at. ‘Oh, the irony,’ she thought. When she was younger, she would’ve given anything to be a normal girl. Now she’d give almost anything to get that excitement back. She enjoyed her role now and took it very seriously. She had friends that had died for her and this planet, and she’d never take that for granted, so she gave it her all.
She gazed out over the ark. Her life always seemed to circle back here somehow. From dates with Masaya, predacite battles, and an annoying alien stalker that had cornered her here more times than she could count. Fact her life with Masaya had basically started in this park and ended in it. He had come home after his first year in college to visit. A few days after he had been home, they had come to this park to talk. They had been gradually growing apart, and they both realized it. They’re lives were moving in different directions. Masaya was looking more and more to the future while Ichigo seemed stuck in the past. She just couldn’t seem to fully move past her guilt surrounding Kish and Tart’s deaths as well as her awful treatment of Kish over all. Not to mention her refusal to step away from the Mew Mew life. Masaya had tried to talk her out of it constantly, but being a Mew Mew was literally in her DNA. It was a part of her. Which had caused many fights between them. She had also not been able to look at Masaya quite the same anymore. Not after finding out that he had been Deep Blue all along. She had apologized, but she just couldn’t help the flutter of worry that would occasionally pop up within her whenever he got angry or loud, though that happened rarely. Masaya, being the gentle soul that he was, completely understood what Ichigo had meant and didn’t take it personally. There were times he still worried himself.
It was when they had decided to break it off and remain friends, that Masaya had finally revealed a dark secret. He had admitted the real reason he disliked talking about Kish’s death. While it was true he could clearly remember it happening, he admitted that at the time he wasn’t sure if it had been him or Deep Blue that had delivered the final blow. And even if it had been Deep Blue, he worried that he had agreed with the action. Masaya had heard Kish’s declaration and had become just as jealous and protective. Ichigo was his, no one else’s, especially not Kish’s. He loved her. Ichigo had sworn up and down that there was no way someone with as kind and loving a heart as he, could have actually killed anyone. Especially in cold blood. Masaya had given her a peck on the forehead and hugged her hard while thanking her for that. His fear of harboring any lingering remainders of Deep Blue being partially quelled. But he also admitted that lately he had become slightly jealous of Kish.
She had looked at him in utter confusion. “Lately, you’ve been reminiscing about the past a lot. And whenever you speak of him, you become more animated. Seem a bit more full of life. It was something I noticed back when we were all still fighting. For some reason you always seemed more yourself around him. You were always quiet and slightly awkward around me; someone you said you loved. And yet when he came around you spoke your mind clearly and seemed to fill with confidence. I found it odd that we were in a relationship and you knew exactly where we stood, but acted like you didn’t. While with him you were always confused where you two stood with each other, but acted like you knew exactly how things were.”
Ichigo had just sat and gaped at him. “Why had you never mentioned any of this before?” she had asked. “Honestly, I was worried I may inadvertently point out some hidden feelings you may have had towards him, which could have jeopardized our relationship. But since we’re just friends now, I figured I should come clean.”
Looking at the ground, Ichigo had let all his words sink in. “I think… I think you might be right, but not how you may think,” she admitted after a long pause. “Go on,” he urged. “Looking back, I think I did come to care for him. I was never in love with him or anything like that back then though.” “Back then? Does that mean you do now?” he asked hesitantly. “What?! No. I mean we literally just broke up. And I haven’t really thought about him this hard in a very long time. But I can see what you were saying. I always did feel like myself around him. I never felt the need to hide any of my thoughts or feelings. Though, the pervert sure as hell made me embarrassed and awkward more times then I can count.” He chuckled, “True, but you never had a problem telling him that’s how he was making you feel.” “I suppose you’re right,” she sighed. “But Masaya?” “Yeah?” “I want you to know that back then and even now, you were the only one I loved. A part of me will always love you,” she said softly and sincerely. “I know, Ichigo. You showed me all the time. Hell, he died for you and yet you still chose me, even when I turned out to be the real villain. You fought for me. Believed in me. And maybe that was all there was for our destiny. Maybe it wasn’t a coincidence that I turned out to be Deep Blue. Being loved by someone as true and faithful as you is what ultimately saved the planet. And though our destines now seem like they’re at a crossroads, I will always love you in some way and will always be here for you as well.”
She hadn’t been able to hold back the tears any longer at that point. Though it was mutual, her heart was still breaking at the loss of her love. Wrapping his arms around her, he had pulled her into his lap and held her tightly while she sobbed her eyes out. When she had finally calmed down, they hugged one last time and went their separate ways. They still remained close friends.
That had happened just over two years ago at the park bench that she could see on the other side of the pond. They kept up with one another periodically. Keeping the other informed of the latest happenings and hot gossip. It was barely a year ago when he called and told her he had met someone. A twinge of sadness hit her, but it quickly disappeared. She was absolutely and honestly happy for him and congratulated him. He deserved to find someone that could make him happy and could follow where his life led. He chattered a bit more about his new girl and Ichigo found herself laughing and chatting along, making him promise to introduce them the first chance he got. After all, this new girl needed Ichigo’s approval. Which only made him laugh, but he promised he would introduce them as soon as they could. When they hung up, Ichigo momentarily worried the pain or heartbreak would return, but it never did. She smiled to herself as she got ready for bed. Maybe she was finally starting to grow up.
Flopping back onto the sun-warmed grass, she folded her arms behind her head and looked up. Shafts of sunlight were streaming through the softly swaying leaves and branches of the tree above her. As her eyes flitted through the leaves, she could easily picture someone with deep green hair, startling amber eyes, and, she could finally admit this to herself, a sexy fanged smirk lounging within the branches. He always had had an affinity for stalking her from high places. Whether it was tree branches of roof tops. So many times, if she looked up, he’d be there. It hadn’t taken long after the call from Masaya about his new girlfriend for her mind to start supplying her with images of Kish almost daily. At first she chalked it up to her loneliness. Masaya had someone else, so she started to grasp for someone. But when she had really sat down and thought it over, she realized what Masaya had once touched on may not have been so far from the truth.
As it always seemed to do, her life had come to another startling realization as she walked through what she had started referring to as her park on the way home from the café one night. They had celebrated her eighteenth birthday and of course had started reminiscing about the old days. Pudding had mentioned how much she missed Tart and wondered what he was up to. This in turn pushed Ichigo to wonder the same about Kish, even going so far as to mention the thought out loud. Everyone had given her a funny look. He was her ex-stalker after all. She simply waved them off, saying it would be nice to know how the three were doing and if they had managed to save their planet. Conversations continued and drifted, but Ichigo suddenly could not get Kish off her mind. After saying her ‘thank yous’ and ‘good nights,’ her feet once again took her to her park.
She had found herself on a small bridge that overlooked one end of the pond. A certain memory flashed behind her eyes. A memory that had caused a turning point for her back when she and Kish were still fighting. On a similar night as now, she had stumbled upon Kish quietly floating on his stomach over the water. Glancing around, she hadn’t seen any predacites or infusers, so wondered what he was up to. Quickly, she had snatched Masha before the little fluff ball could alert him to her presence. She hid behind the wall of the bridge and spied him between the slats. He looked to be deep in thought and incredibly sad. Then she remembered that earlier that day she had been exceptionally mad at him for spoiling the first day off she had had in forever. Granted, he had no idea about that. She had turned down his advances harshly, calling him a perverted nasty alien and a creep to name a few. She really had been incredibly cruel and nasty. More so than usual. Other than a few come-ons that really hadn’t even been that bad, he hadn’t deserved the sharp sting of her tongue. Sure, they were enemies, but she didn’t need to be so unnecessarily cruel.
He had been trailing the tip of a finger through the water causing ripples to distort his reflection. Suddenly, he had released a loud mournful growl, punching the water and completely shattering his reflection. Just before he had teleported away, she had heard him whisper, “Why, Kitten?” She tried to yell at him to wait, though she had no idea why. But he didn’t hear, or if he did, he never returned; she had waited around for a while just in case. That memory was one of the first times she had gotten a glimpse behind his façade. He wasn’t just some brash perverted stalker. He had genuine feelings and had looked so hurt. It had made her start to question, ‘Why? Why were they truly fighting?’ All she knew was it had something to do with his home planet. But it was the first time she had really begun to question the point of it all. She would never stop defending Earth. But maybe, just maybe, there was another way.
The weeks following her eighteenth birthday, Ichigo had done some serious soul searching. She replayed many of her and Kish’s conversations over and over in her head. And without the constant obsession of her first love or the sweet naiveté muddling her brain, she started to realize some things. Kish had been not only trying to win her over in his own way, but had actually been much more discreet about his honest and true feelings than what had been apparent to her back then. She recalled feeling so proud of herself for beating him so often, but looking back now, it was so blatantly clear how much he had really held back for her sake. Even allowing her to believe she had bested him. Not saying she never held her own against him at any time, but he certainly shouldn’t have lost as often as he did. And as the time to the final fight drew closer, so did an urgency in Kish. He had tried explaining to her so many times what he was trying to do. But she would never listen. Constantly flinging insults at him or attacking before he could say anything past “Hello Kitten.” God she had been so immature. He had tried to get her to help betray his own leader. All because he loved her and didn’t want to see her get hurt. But she had stamped her pretty little foot and told him she could never join him or go with him. He had looked absolutely broken when he had said, “Fine, Ichigo. If that’s what you want. I’ll go alone.” She had been so utterly stupid. If only she had truly listened and tried to actually talk, they may have prevented that horrible final battle all together. So many times he had tried to talk to her, had intervened on her behalf, had rescued her, had even tried to comfort her. And every time she had spit on his efforts. It was a wonder he kept on loving her. That was when she realized it had never been a game to him. Maybe teasing in the beginning just to get a rise out of his enemy. But then it had become all too real. Real and dangerous. He was caught. In love with the enemy with the choice of betrayal or hurting his love. His people and planet or her. And he had chosen her.
She had always known it deep down, but it was like it suddenly became more real. Yes, he had hurt her many times, but he had had to. If Deep Blue knew how deep his feelings really went he could have been killed at any time. He had to make the fights look real. ‘Which, let’s face it, wasn’t too hard with me constantly attacking and hurting his feelings over and over again. A guy can only take so much,’ she thought dryly. Back then she truly had been deeply in love with Masaya. But now… Now she was free, older, and maybe even a bit wiser. Now she might be willing to give him a chance. But now he was gone and possibly for good. Fate had a cruel sense of humor. Or maybe it was just herself that liked cruel irony. For she had walked away from a love that she had once fought so desperately for. Only to wish for a chance at love with the person who had so desperately fought for her.
Not long after that, she had started to daydream of him. She’d start getting ready for bed, only to find him sitting on her balcony waiting for her. His fang flashing smirk sliding across his lips as he’d say, “Hey, Kitten.” Then they’d spend the rest of the night talking. Him telling her how much he still loved her and she how much she had missed him. They’d continue to catch up before falling asleep cuddled together. Or he’d appear above her in the park as she walked home, and he’d try to steal another kiss. She even got into the habit of leaving her balcony door unlocked just in case he did come back. It was extremely wishful thinking, she knew, but she didn’t care. She decided to hold onto hope. She constantly wondered what he was doing. And, more importantly, if he still held feelings for her. Three and a half years is an awfully long time to continue to love someone. Especially when that someone had turned you down multiple times and had been in love with someone else.
Her desperation had turned her innocent dreams and fantasies into something much hotter. Fantasies that were now rooted more in primal needs and desires. It had actually surprised her at first, waking up after her first sexual fantasy revolving around Kish. True, she was a virgin, but she wasn’t a prude either. She and Masaya had experimented, though they had never really done anything more than heavy petting. He wanted to wait for marriage and Ichigo always felt off engaging in sexual activities with him. It was like he was too perfect to be doing those sorts of things. She had had wet dreams about Masaya many times before and knew how to take care of herself. But her steamy dreams involving a golden-eyed alien were much more intense. They were way more erotic and felt much more real. Every time she awoke from one she’d immediately need to shower to wash herself free of the sweat and lingering dampness, cool herself down, or finish what the dream had started.
The Kish of her fantasies could be soft and sweet or hard and demanding, but either way she was always well satisfied. Always knowing exactly what to do or say to push her to new heights. And she knew that if she ever got the chance, she wanted to know if those fangs felt as amazing in reality as they did in her dreams. Her Kish had also been slightly aged up to what she believed he most likely looked like now. She imagined he still wore the two forelocks, but didn’t keep them tied and that the rest of his hair had grown maybe an inch or two. She pictured him in the same style of clothes, only now his shirt and pants were tight, showing off his muscled physique. The two things that didn’t change were his molten amber eyes and his fangy smirk. She’d give almost anything to see that grin that used to piss her off so much when she was young. She’d give almost anything just to see him.
The nightmares soon followed. The worst day of her life put on repeat. And now it had changed. Become even harsher. Even more heartbreaking. Mixing her desires into her real memories. Causing more pain and anguish. Ichigo slammed her fists down at her sides in frustration. Gods she wanted to see him again. To know that he was alright and that it all had been worth it. Even if he didn’t love her anymore. Even if he was in love with someone else or even married. She still wanted to see him again. To tell him she was so, so deeply sorry for all the hurt and pain she had caused him. To apologize for being a naive little girl who hadn’t taken the time to actually listen. Especially, since she now knew how it felt to possibly love someone, but not be able to do anything about it. Ichigo looked up at the sky. The stars were starting to come out. She had wasted an entire day reminiscing. It was time to go home and go to bed. And she prayed she didn’t have another nightmare.
