Thought I Found a Way Out, But Someday I’ll Make Out of Here
Chapter One
“Kacchan!!!” The scream tore out from the grenette’s lips as he dashed towards his frenemy. His heavy yellow backpack was immediately tossed at the sludge monster to distract the villain long enough for him to pull up close to the volatile, blonde bombshell trapped inside.
“You!!! Why you?!” the blonde choked out, still gagging on sludge. Lungs burned and ache as he greedily tried to gulp up air in this small respite from drowning. He didn’t need saving, especially not from the likes of this wimpy, quirkless loser when capable heroes with quirks and he himself failed. That damn Deku just couldn’t give up his chance to look down on him and that pissed him off more than the dire situation that he was in.
“My legs moved on their own! I don’t know why either!!!” Midoriya said laughing shakily with his honestly and adrenaline thrumming in his veins. His green eyes moved frantically to see where he could help now that he was up close to the situation and imminent danger. “It’s because your eyes were pleading for help! You look like you needed anyone, even a ‘deku’ like me to save you and I… I couldn’t watch you die Kacchan,” Izuku hiccupped as he dug through the murky sludge. His smile was weak and brittle, but he couldn’t be any decent hero without smiling and trying to reassure.
“St… Stop!!!” cried out Katsuki, seeing the futility of the situation. His eyes rolling back in his head, ready to pass out, even if he was given just the slightest of oxygen reprieve from Deku. It wasn’t enough. He hated the greenette, but he didn’t want him to die because of him either.
“It’ll only take a little while longer. Don’t get in my way kid!!!” The sludge monster roared; his sludgy hand prepared to slam the middle-schooler into the pavement until he was no longer a nuisance.
“You wanna kill yourself!!! You’ll die for nothing!” screamed the heroes behind the greenette, trying to convince him to retreat.
Izuku stubbornly shook his head ‘no,’ standing his ground against the naysayers. He was going to prove to everyone from his bully to the heroes that had yet to save Katsuki’ that he wasn’t ‘good for nothing’. The greenette pulled out his keychain with his pepper spray and immediately removed the safety. He clamped one hand over Bakugo’s eyes and squeezed the pepper spray into those big, bulging eyes making sure both got a heavy dose. of the villain.
“Arrrggghhhh!!!!!” screamed out the sludge monster in pain, clutching at his burning, watering eyes.
Izuku quickly located and grabbed Katsuki’s hand quick as a blink and with one sudden jerk, threw all his body weight to the ground in hopes of yanking his bully out of the sludge with his weight while the captor was distracted. He gritted his teeth and yanked, violently jerking each time until he suddenly fell backwards with Katsuki in his arms. Both boys surprised that his scheme worked.
“We did it Kacchan,” Izuku gasped out in wonder, a huge goofy smile on his face as he looked up the boy on top of him. His triumph didn’t last long because he saw the angry sludge monster raising his sludgy fists to slam down on both boys. So, with his last remaining strength, he shoved Katsuki viciously away. “I’m sorry!” cried out Izuku before bracing for impact. His arm thrown over his eyes and his teeth gritted together.
“I’ll teach you not to meddle in grown people’s affairs!” roared the villain slamming his fist over and over against the useless green haired human. It was all his fault that he lost out on a premium body and why he had originally got beaten up by All Might. “No one is going to mourn your dea—” the monster stated before he was punched away by All Might making his flashy return.
“It’s… you…. See All Might… I told y… you I could be a… be a hero…”Izuku wheezed out weakly before coughing up blood. His everything hurt from the follicles of his hair to the tips of his toes. He tried to move, but couldn’t will his limbs to obey him.
“Hey kid… you did great,” All Might said somberly as he squatted near the quickly fading teen. The great hero only looking away from the greenette when he sensed someone hovering over by his shoulder. The young blonde teen banged up and slimy, but otherwise okay thanks to one Izuku Midoriya. “I think you have someone who wants to thank you,” All Might confessed, hoping that the ambulance would come quickly. But when he turned to look at the teen he confessed his biggest secret too, green eyes stared blankly back and he knew before the scream tore out from the other blondes lips that he was gone.
“Don’t you dare die on me you shitty Deku!” cried out Bakugou collapsing down on his knees and banging his past victim’s chest. “You don’t fucking get to save me and die before I can pay you back. This doesn’t change anything Deku,” he roared, not realizing his eyes were steadily letting down a stream of angry tears.
“Come on kid, let’s take a look at the both of you,” a medical examiner coaxed softly, gently dragging his hands away.
All Might stood crouched next to the dead child, thinking with regret that in the time the brave teen had rush towards the sludge monster that he would have made a great successor for One for All. It was just too bad he was out of time.
xXx
He couldn’t… he couldn’t breathe in that moment between life and death. The initial slamming of sludgy fist had nearly made him black out entirely as he felt his head bouncing off asphalt and his rib cage concaving. He wasn’t stupid. He knew if he did something this stupidly bold as to try to save Katsuki with no hero training or quirk that he risked being hurt this badly.
But dying… His mother had no one else but her precious Izuku. Who would tell her that her only child died because he had to go chasing his dreams. Hindsight was always 20/20 in situations like these when it was too late for people to change the past. There was just so much regret.
//Knowing what you know now, do you still want to be a hero Izuku Midoriya?//
“Yes of course I do,” Izuku said vehemently ‘yes’. It was all he ever wanted to be since he was five and rocking with excitement in the computer chair, waiting for his mother to allow him to use his compute time to watch All Might save the day.
//Do you think a villain can be redeemed?//
Izuku thought a bit, wondering what the disembodied voice that he could suddenly hear, was truly asking him. “I… Change comes with actions. If they truly want to be ‘good’ then they must show it even when others don’t believe them capable of change,” he said thoughtfully this time. He read up on enough heroes and villians to see that some of the villians just made a few bad choices or was forced to go to villainy when society shunned them. He would like to think that all but the most hardened criminal could be redeemed and released back into society.
//What do you think you were lacking in the other world?//
“Power… a quirk,” Izuku confessed. If he had a power, a useful power, maybe he wouldn’t be dead right now talking to voices. Maybe the one person he had thought of as his best friend wouldn’t have turn on him like he personally betrayed him once they both discovered he was quirkless. Maybe… maybe… maybe…
//You did a good thing saving your enemy Katsuki Bakugou. You weren’t supposed to die in your world. You were supposed to be the greatest hero in a lifetime. But do to an error in the system we are willing to offer you another chance at life.//
“Greatest hero? I can go back?” Izuku was brimming with so many questions and hope.
//Not to your world. You died. I’m sorry. That chapter has closed, that version of Izuku, you, have already died. No, we will restart you in another world and give you a chance to be the hero you were always meant to be. //
‘Wha—' Izuku thought groggily before he felt his weightless body suddenly thrust down by some invisible force. He woke up with a start, eyes blinking groggily up into a muted sea of darkness dissimilar to the realm he had been when he had died.
He wiggled a finger to see if he was truly awake, as his eyes slowly started to adjust to the darkness, and he could. He could wiggle his fingers, and apparently his toes too. He was excited. Hopeful. Sure, he couldn’t go back to the world he was originally born he, but if he could trust that voice, they brought him somewhere he could be a hero and start over.
Slowly he sat up, the cloying smell of drying flowers in the air as he greedily gulped down breath after breath. The scent clung to his person and as he shifted and looked around, he realized he had been laying in a bed of flowers. Some fresh, some already starting to show signs of decay. All swathed inside the wooden casket that he had apparently been laying in.
“Waaahhh!!!” He wailed, nearly tripping over himself to escape his coffin. His clumsy limbs felt foreign to him as tried to wrench himself outside of the box. The casket following with him and the flowers to the floor. He squeaked indignantly and swatted at the box that fell on top of him, underestimating his strength as the coffin when careening towards the crumbling wall of a cathedral. “Wow,” he gasped.
“I can’t believe you did it round-cheeks. Master’s awake!” cried out an older male voice in excitement.
“Was there any doubt?” came a female voice in amusement from deep in the abandoned church.
“A fuck ton of doubt,” the disembodied voice exclaimed even as he drew closer to Izuku.
‘He sounds a lot like my Kacchan,’ Izuku thought almost wistfully. But he still darted his eyes wildly left to right before trying to drunkenly duck behind a statue by a European style alter. He felt different. Like it was more than just him coming back from the dead. He felt like he had some sort of growth spurt had kicked in along with his muscles weakening from laying unconscious for so long. Like his muscle might have atrophied, but he was sill super strong compared to his old self. Like an All Might level of strength was all he could possible compare it to.
‘They did say I could be a hero,’ he thought to himself even as he tried to stay as hidden as possible. He didn’t know how these strangers knew him, but he wanted to get a look at them before he leapt to his own conclusions and possible danger.
“Where the hell is he? I see the casket has been smashed and… Master?” A tall, blonde, teen similar to the old Katsuki asked those words cautiously as he held up a lantern to see the greenette crouched behind the statue. Looks of amusement and worry warred on his face as he gently crooked his finger to cox the greenette out. “I knew that shitty hero stabbed you good and you died. But I didn’t think he fucked you up this bad.”
“What are you doing here Kacchan? Why do you have ears and a… a tail. My Kacchan never had a tail,” Izuku explained, slowly standing up to his full height. He was pleasantly surprised to see that he was nearly a head taller than the blonde Katsuki who seemed to be in his late teens instead of the fourteen they both were when he passed. The greenette wanted to reach out in touch the blonde wolf ears on top of this Katsuki’s head, or run his fingers through that lush, bushy tail. But the scowl he wore stopped him.
“He’s no longer our Master, is he?” this world’s Katsuki said sullenly. His arms crossed over his broad chest. He wore a simple white slightly shredded t-shirt under a bomber jacket with a thick fur collar. He wore relatively clean jeans with one purposely done tear in the knee. His slender neck was adorned with a red collar with spikes, his covered in combat boots. He was everything and nothing like his Katsuki. Sure, the face was the same with the disapproving scowl and the piercing garnet eyes. But the clawed fingers and the furry appendages were all new features.
“I told you Bakugou, once you’re dead, you’re dead. The best I could do was get another Izuku from a different world to inhabit this body. Its basically Izuku, just without all the helpful memories,” she chirped in nonchalant manner. Her big brown eyes looked curiously down at this version of Izuku. She wore a wide brim witch’s hate with a puffy short black dress and striped stockings Her hand thrust forward and her smile was bright and wide as she offered her hand to shake. “Hi, I’m Ochaco Uraraka, I’m your resident witch, nice to meet and serve you.”
“I’m Izuku Midoriya, pleasure…” Izuku said weakly taking the chipper girl’s hand. He nearly jumped when he could hear the wolf-like Katsuki growl in displeasure the moment he held the brunette’s hand.
“Knock it off Bakugou, you’re scaring him,” she laughed as she thumped the blonde brute against his chest. She seemed unphased by the volume of growling increasing. “Don’t mind him, he’s totally a softy and his tail is super soft. You should pet it,” she insisted.
“Don’t go volunteering people’s tails to pet,” growled out Katsuki before snatching his tail back. He glowered at the brunette before turning his burning crimson gaze back to Izuku. “So, what you are telling me round cheeks is that he is an isn’t my master,” he said, put out.
“Yep. Every person has a different version of themselves that is unique due to the environment and circumstances that shape them. But they are still them no matter how you look at it. I’m sure the Ochaco in his world is just as bright and bubbly as me, but maybe she’s a dragon or a hamster. Either version is still me. I just took the Izuku who wouldn’t be missed in his world and put him in our world,” she explained kindly in terms that both could fully understand.
“So, Master can still be my mate?” Katsuki asked hopefully as he drew closer to Izuku.
The greenette’s eyes widened in surprise. He honestly never imagined a reality where Katsuki would like him enough to consider him a friend nonetheless ‘mating’ material after he was found quirkless. He wasn’t entirely sure he was happy about the situation or not. He just nibbled on his bottom lip, unsure of where he fit in now to his new reality.
“It would of course be up to Izuku-sama, buuuuuuut werewolf’s like Katsuki mate for life and he’s already set his eyes on you. Sorry,” the brunette offered with a regretful shrug of her shoulders
“Sorry? Why sorry! He should be fucking lucky to land a price like me. Right Master?!” Katsuki argued, glaring at first Ochaco before looking to Izuku for affirmation of his claim on him.
“Can we um… have this discussion after we get out of this church? Where is home? Lets go there first and eat. I’m ravenous. Also, what did you mean about a hero stabbing my past self too death? Why would he do that?” he asked, even as he ventured to walk forward, his knees buckling from disuse in his new body.
“It’s because we’re villains and you’re the biggest and baddest villain of them all. My mate,” Katsuki said proudly even as he slowly drew the weak-kneed Izuku up.
“O…Oh,” Izuku squeaked. His dreams of finally being a hero seeming to look more and more like a distant memory.
