MERRY X-MAS…and sad partings
By: Zorra
Pain ripped threw his body, tearing at every fiber, every
nerve. It blinded his vision and dimmed
his scenes. Vaguely, he was aware of
Cye holding his hand, gently stroking it in comfort. Tears ran down Cye’s cheeks as he realized the hopelessness of the
situation. There was nothing he could do. No miracle rescue this time, no Sage
here to heal him. Cye felt his heart
lurched as a pained cry sliced the thick blackness of night like a knife.
He looked down at his friend and attempted a smile. The smile faltered as his gaze looked upon
the bleeding body. Ryo lay, half
propped up against a wall, with his legs spread before him. Cye’s eyes followed the offending stone that
assailed his friend, up to its base. It
was a fountain. A large stone fountain in
the shape of an angel wielding a sword and shield. The sword was held before it pointing up and out. It was that sword that was pinning Ryo’s
body now.
Cye didn’t know how it happened or why. He hadn’t been
there. Hadn’t sensed anything
wrong. From what he was able to tell,
the fountain had been hanging, suspended in air by a rickety crane. The city had been planning to install it the
morning prior but then a heavy snowfall delay the construction. Cye>Cye spotted the broken chain where the links
had frozen and snapped. Why had fate
chosen that moment, the moment Ryo was passing by, to allow this angel to
fall? Angel? ‘The irony of the
situation’ Cye thought dryly as he felt anger rise.
Now that he looked, Cye could see the brightly wrapped gifts
strewed about in the snow. Fresh tears
sprang to his eyes. “Oh Ryo, why did
you have to go out?” But Cye knew the answer already. He’d found the note Ryo
had left that morning. Ryo said he had
to run home to get some gifts he’d forgotten. That he’d be back before first
light. Cye had been up early and
decided to take a turn around the park in hopes that he’d run into Ryo and
could assist him in caring the gifts if needed.
By the time he’d found him, it was to late. This Christmas was one meant for saying
good-bye. Something Cye couldn’t bring
himself to do.
The other side of the chain broke. The angel slid further down, the weight of it pushing the sword
further into Ryo. The aforementioned, screamed
in agony as the stone finally sunk deep enough to pass through him. Cye heard the ripping of skin as the tip
poked out of Ryo’s body. Cye gasped as
Ryo spit up a massive amount of blood.
His eyes fluttering with his effort to stay awake and speak.
“Cye. I’m
s-s-sor-ry.”
“No Ryo, there’s nothing to be sorry about. You just rest now, everything will be fine.”
Ryo smiled weakly.
“Th-anks Cye.” Then all was still. For a moment the world had gone quiet and nature held it’s
breath. Cye could hear nothing. His mind blanked out as his eyes rested on the
pale face of his long time friend.
Sage sprinted across the park, madly searching for his
friends in the dawn light. He found
them but it was to late. All he could
do was stand there and watch in horror as the third chain broke and the wooden
support gave out. The angel came
crashing down.
Cye didn’t know what hit him. The stone crushed his kneeling body forward over Ryo, the shield
digging deep into his back snapping his spine.
A moment of pain registered before Cye’s body was sliced in half and his
head crushed into a puddle of goo.
Ryo’s lifeless body was covered in Cye’s blood now, his own
legs having been severed and crushed.
His body snapped under the weight, his head falling to the cold ground
while the rest of him was still pinned against the wall.
Sage stood in stunned silence for long moments before his
body collapsed from the shock. He knelt
on the ground just staring at them with tears freely flowing from his
eyes. Hours later the police found him,
still lost in his own world.
The End
