Shido played with the hem of his shirt, his green eyes staring out over the court. His mate stood up on the dais, greeting those of his court who came to welcome his return. Shido could see his golden eyes glancing over the gathered crowd, searching for him undoubtedly. By all rights he should have been the first one to greet his mate on his return but he was fearful of Cain’s reaction when he got close enough for his mate to get a good look at him.
It had been three days since Soryo had created the bond between the three of them and the dark bite on his neck had faded but not enough. His mate would see it and he would know. Shido just wanted to make sure Cain was well enough away from Gaven when he did.
He leaned his head against the alcove he had hidden himself in and closed his eyes wearily. He hadn’t had a night’s sleep since. Every time he tried to sleep his dreams were usurped by the soft voice who insisted on calling him fiora nevae. Flower of the snow. Shido shuddered and forced his eyes open.
Soryo had tried to shield his dreams but the other oneiroi was more powerful than he and had broken through Soryo’s attempts. He sighed. His fledge-mates were just as tired as he. He was grateful that Cain’s return coincided with their hunting trip. They wouldn’t be back before he told his mate of what had happened and if Cain was truly as enraged as Shido suspected he would be they’d know through the bond and hopefully flee to another court.
He felt a sudden peak of fury sear down the tattered remains of his bond with his mate and he shuddered. Before him his mate glided down off his dais, his face dark with anger. Shido winced and pulled back farther into the shadows as his mate moved through the court and out into the hall. Steeling his nerves he followed.
It didn’t take Cain long to realize he was being followed and Shido’s dead heart nearly stopped at the single quick glance he received. However his mate turned back around and kept walking. Folding his arms across his chest Shido kept pace with his mate’s enraged steps.
He stepped into the rooms that belonged to Cain and mis mis mate’s enraged glare. Lifting his chin he met it directly, waiting.
“Well?” His mate hissed. “I imagine you have some disgusting mortal explanation for not greeting me properly!”
Shido lowered his gaze and shook his head. “It is not a mortal reason, avraire.” He replied, forcing the endearment off his tongue.
The golden eyes narrowed suspiciously but his mate held his peace.
With a sigh Shido lifted the heavy fall of his hair and turned his face to the side, baring the dark mark on his neck. He felt his mate’s surprise and shuddered when it turned to terrible rage, making him tense instinctively. He fought back the fight or flight reaction that came upon him when Cain was suddenly before him, catching his chin in a firm hand and pulling his head painfully to the side.
“Which one?” His mate snarled.
Shido shuddered and tried to pull back against the wall. “Avraire. . .”
He cried out as he was slammed back, his head striking the stone hard enough to make his vision swim. “Do not call me that now!” His mate hissed. “You will answer my question and then we will discuss your participation in the act!”
“Leave them alone!” Shido snapped, earning himself another sharp shake. “They did it to protect me! To protect us all. Did you not order Gaven to keep me safe?”
His mate snarled. “Do not seek to rationalize it! He has touched what is mine and there is no excuse for such a challenge! You know that!”
Shido stumbled as he was suddenly released. He looked up in sudden fear as his mate whirled on is heel and stormed towards the door, power collecting at his heels. In a panic Shido dropped to his knees, catching the long coat in his hand and pulling his mate to a stop.
“Nuae!” he pleaded, “gestada’jyo! The fault lies with me! Nemen’dyo ve ravian ve ja.”
His mate froze, staring down at him with a dark, unreadable expression. Shido kept his back straight and his chin lifted proudly, even as he begged his mate to take his anger out on him, knowing Cain would find any pathetic cowing from him disgusting. His mate liked him submissive but he didn’t like him weak and Shido knew better than to go into this devil’s bargain showing fear lest it flame the strong vampire’s aggressiveness.
“I am tired of your games, Shido.” His mate growled, “You play me for fool! You whine about how I wrong you when I could just take you! I have given you the chance to play your part of your own will when it is within my right to force you to dance your steps the way I chose! And this is how you repay me? Oh do not fear, melmae,” Cain sneered on his title, “I will take my payment from you. I will show you that I do not find this a game at all. If you cannot keep away from the temptation of humiliating me before my own court I shall remove that temptation altogether and give all would be interlopers an example to think over before listening to your simpering!”
Shido winced but kept a strong hold on his mate’s coat. “The fault lies with me,” he murmured, lowering his eyes, “I am the one who must atone for it, not those who were following your orders. It was for me to refuse them, to fight it. I failed. Your grievance is with me alone for I will not name the one who did this and the court does not know of this . . . infraction against you.”
He felt hesitation sing through his mate’s mind and relaxed a bit. They had all been very careful to keep the court blind to their actions to keep his mate from appearing weak. Shido knew he had one chance to keep his fledge-mates alive and he also knew that if Cain felt his status threatened that very small chance would be destroyed.
It was a very delicate web he waavinaving and he watched his mate consider the options silently, grateful to see the rage lessening as the older vampire began to think rather than blindly act. No one at court knew. If Cain killed Gaven he would have to explain the actions to his court, appearing even weaker when he failed to get his mate to name the one who had marked him.
Or he could just deal with it privately and no one but the four of them would ever know.
Shido saw Cain reach the inevitable impasse and released his hold on his mate, dropping gracefully to his hands submissively. “Nemen'dyo ve ravian ve ja.” He repeated, letting the old words slip easily from his lips, knowing the sound would please the golden haired vampire.
Long fingers ran through his hair, pushing it back from his face on either sides and fisting, holding his head in place. He winced at the sharp pain but kept his peace, his eyes locked firmly on the ground.
“I tire of this, Shido,” Cain hissed from above him, “I tire of your constant rebellion and flaunting of my strength. I tire of cleaning up after you and I tire of dancing the same unsatisfactory steps! This time a slap on the wrist and letting you run off to go devise some other way to disobey me will not satisfy my anger! There will be an end to this! You get one chance, Shido. Either you stop abusing the privileges I’m moved to give you or I remove them all together, starting with those you are trying to protect! I have been too lenient with you! You must learn there are consequences to breaking the rules! Either you prove to me that you’ve learned that and are willing to start taking this seriously or I teach you what it truly means to cross me!”
Shido shuddered. “I understand.”
“Swear it!” His mate growled, “Swear that you will stop trying to fight me! Swear that you will stop playing at being my mate when it suits you and start living it, as you should! Swear to me all this and prove to me that you mean it. Prove t tha that you are able to do these things and I will not demand payment from the ones you try to protect.”
“I swear.” Shido whispered. “You are doing me a favor. It was never my intent to betray you.”
“It never is.” His mate replied, his voice deep and full of disappointment.
The fingers in his hair straightened and pulled back to cup the sides of his face and tilt it upwards. His mate’s golden eyes searched his for a long moment an rel relaxed, not fighting the probing gaze. Cain’s fingers ran over his cheeks, the sharp nails biting into the soft flesh and drawing blood. Shido never flinched nor tried to pull away as his mate licked the blood off one hand.
The other hand gathered the blood that had escaped from each cheek and held it before him. Dipping his head Shido obediently lapped the blood from his mate’s hand. He felt the vampire before him shift so that he knelt behind him and a strong tongue ran over the marks as he cleaned the blood stained fingers. The taste of his own blood on his tongue made his shiver in forbidden delight.
When he was finished the hand cupped the bottom of his chin, forcing him up and back against his mate’s chest. The hand slid down and gripped his neck tightly for a moment before his mate almost languidly drew the talons down sharply across his chest. Shido arched and hissed as they laid his shirt and skin open. His mate smeared the essence across his pale skin as he caressed the abused flesh drawing a groan of pain and pleasure from him.
The hand slipped across his stomach and down the V of his navel, gripping his thigh tightly and forcing his legs apart. He turned his face against his mate’s shoulder as Cain’s talons tore into his flesh once again, leaving twin trails up the insides of his legs. It hurt but he bore it in silence, refusing to beg or plead. He had brought this upon himself and he would accept the punishment with as much dignity as he could for as long as possible, though he knew, as his mate’s hands returned to his lips, sliding first one and then two fingers into his mouth to be cleaned, he would scream before his mate was through.
He lapped at the fingers he was offered, cutting his tongue once on the sharp nails but refusing to let the pain show. Blood poured down his legs as the thick artery in his thighs pumped the fluid faster than the other wounds. He felt like a sacrificial offering to some blood god as pain andasurasure played through him. He groaned when a hand came to rest over his arousal.
Cold lips touched his neck and he mewed, panting for breath as he ground slowly against the hand. His mate growled and Shido cried out, startled as he was suddenly shoved forward back onto his hands. Cain was a heavy weight across his back.
“Did you enjoy it?” His mate hissed, “Did you enjoy feeling him take what is mine and mine alone?”
The grip on his arousal tightened painfully and Shido shuddered, trying desperately to keep from collapsing under the large vampire’s weight. “No!”
“Liar!” Cain snarled, the talons of one hand laying his back open. “Did you cry for him, melmae? Did you beg him to do it?”
Shido shuddered. “You don’t understand . . .” He whispered.
His mate snorted. “I don’t have to.”
He was suddenly released and Shido sobbed as he fell to elbows, his entire body a mass of pain and pleasure. There was a crack from above him that made him jump even before something cut through the cloth and skin on his back, tearing a surprised cry from him. He dipped his head and peered through his air in time to see his creator’s whip slither gracefully at his feet before coming up again.
When the second blow landed he kept his mouth shut and only hiss of air through his teeth indicated that he felt the weapon’s sharp kiss.
Twice more the whip fell on his back and both times he kept his silence. Long fingers filtered through the sensitive hair of his neck and he shuddered at the touch. His head was lifted and lips brushed against his cheek. y goy good,” his mate murmured, licking at the corner of his mouth where blood from his bitten tongue trickled from the corner, “you know what comes next.”
Shido closed his eyes in shame but, as before, he kept his peace, though he couldn’t keep his hands from shaking as he reached down and undid his pants. A hand closed over his as he freed himself, urging him to move his hand with long slow strokes. His mate’s cold breath tickled his ear and he tuned his face away, hating the flush he knew was on his cheeks.
“It ends when you do.” Cain whispered, licking the shell of his ear before pulling his hand away and standing.
It was harder to hold himself up with only one hand planted firmly on the ground when the whip struck and after a few minutes he couldn’t keep silent any longer as he panted in pleasure until a new lash was added to his back, turning the moan to a sharp cry. He worked desperately, trying to get past the barrier between pleasure and pain. Finally he reached it and he gave into it fully, letting everything feed his need. Pain lost all meaning and there was only endless pleasure.
With a scream that threatened to make him hoarse he came and the whip fell to the floor, nothing but a dissolving puddle of his mate’s discarded blood. Hands dug into his back as the tattered remains of his clothes were torn away.
His mate took him with a primal growl and he bucked against the other male, snarling his own desire and challenge. Both he and his mate were covered in blood as they joined in the ancient act between vampires. His head was pulled aside and sharp fangs entered his neck, tearing open the wound left by the other master.
Cain sucked harshly at the wound but did not swallow. Instead he turned and spat the blood on the ground in the symbolic gesture showing his distain for the other who had tried to claim his mate. Twice more this act was repeated before the powerful jaws clamped about his skin for the final time and his blood was drawn by the golden haired vampire, drowning him in rapture and bliss.
Gasping for unneeded breath Shido arched against his mate as he was maked before falling to the floor and passing out.
***
Soryo wasn’t there.
Shido shuddered and folded his arms about himself against the inherent coldness of the place. His undead body shouldn’t have been affected but the cold of this place had a way of seeping into his very soul and making him feel numb. He lay upon the delicately carved bed, staring up at the frosted glass that made up the top of the frame the long white silk canopy hung from.
Hands ran up his chest and he shifted, crying out softly at the sharp cold that came with them that made the skin they passed numb after their initial sharp kiss.
“Stop.” He whispered, trying to move his arm but trapped by the impossibly thin chain connected to a small band of silver about his wrist. He stared at the band stupidly. It looked like something someone would give a lover. So small. So delicate.
So why couldn’t he break it?
No, he realized as he stared at it for a moment longer, the problem wasn’t that he couldn’t physically break it. The problem was the fact that he couldn’t stir up the motivation to break it.
Lips touched the side of his neck and he hissed softly. “Stop!”
He felt a body shift over his, though he couldn’t make the form out. “Hush my fiora. Lay still.”
Shido tried to dig up the will to break free, to fight this man that was invading his dreams, but all of his attempts failed. “Soryo.” He murmured against lips gone cold, infected with the man’s taint.
The oneiroi’s soft, wind-like laugh traveled over his skin, making him shiver. “He can’t hear you, fiora. He’s trapped in dreams of his own.”
Shido hissed and succeeded in turning, meeting hypnotic blue eyes. “If you’ve harmed him . . .”
Pale hands touched his face and he registered the sensation of the oneiroi rising, though he could make out nothing of his face. He did, however, make out the form lying on the other side of the bed and he stiffened.
“Soryo!” He cried out.
A deep growl was followed by a painful slap. “Silence!” The oneiroi hissed. “Speak in a tone befitting of this place or speak not at all!”
Shido licked his bleeding lip, his eyes never leaving the still form next to him. He reached out, his arm sluggish to respond to his mind's command and brushed the back of his hand over his fledge-mate’s arm.
Soryo’s face was troubled in his sleep and Shido turned to face the oneiroi above him. “What do you want?” He demanded.
A pale hand stroked his face, the other hand mirroring the action on Soryo’s. “Perfection.”
Something shuddered through the garden and for a split second Shido saw long white hair pulled back from an angled face that was painfully beautiful as the oneiroi turned to stare at something over his shoulder.
And then he woke to chaos.
