Tezuka Kunimitsu turned his head back toward the door. Kikumaru Eiji was gone from the room. Gone from his love life for sure. Tezuka had hoped that there would have been a little more time before he had to deal with seeing Eiji, but he knew that it wasn’t to be. They went to school together after all. He closed his eyes against his now throbbing head. Why did things have to be this difficult? Why couldn’t he just be with the man he loved? He heard footsteps at the door and his eyes popped open. He stared at the man standing at the door like he didn’t know who he was, even though he had just been talking to him.
“Welcome back.” He said.

Momoshiro Takeshi walked slowly toward the elevator. In his mind, he could see his Eiji sitting with Tezuka, embracing and being happy together. He shook his head, the thought too painful for him to bear. He got to the doors and pushed the button with the down arrow on it. His emotions were running in overtime. He felt so stupid, it had been his idea to come here after all, and now he had lost the one person that was dear to him. The one person he thought would ever understand him. He got into the elevator and let his head drop as the doors closed. His heart did a back flip along with his stomach as the elevator stopped on the ground floor. He got out and walked toward the exit, his head still dropped. He suddenly felt a new emotion, and it almost scared him. It was anger. How dare Eiji play with his feelings like that. They had just gotten done having sex and Eiji was going to leave him. It seemed that maybe it was Eiji who didn’t know what he wanted. Momo lifted his head and balled his hands into fists. That wasn’t something one did to a close friend dammit!
“Hey Momo-senpai.” He heard from in front of him. He hadn’t realized it, but he had made his way outside, and was about a block from the hospital. He looked forward, and saw the top of a green head.
“Echizen.” He said, looking down a little and seeing the rest of the body that went with that head.
Echizen Ryoma was standing in front of him. Racket bag slung over his shoulder as per usual. Momo could see that the freshman had cocked an eyebrow at him in wonder. He forced a smile to his face and chuckled. Echizen always popped up at the most interesting of times.
“What’s up Echizen?” He asked, lacing his hands behind his head.
“Nothing. Did you just come from seeing Tezuka?”
“Yeah.” He said, slightly annoyed. “Are you on your way?”
“No.” Ryoma said. The bored look returned to his face. “Have you been hanging around Kikumaru-senpai?” He asked then, “When I saw him before he had the same expression on his face.”
“Yeah, I had lunch with him today.” Momo said.
Ryoma looked at him for a minute, and Momo looked back. Ryoma shrugged and began to walk again.
“Well, bye then.” He said as he walked past the taller man. Momo turned with him and walked with him.
“Where are you going?” He asked.
“Home. I want to play some tennis.”
“The public courts have lights.” Momo said
“So does the one I have at home.”
“Mind if I come with you?”
“Whatever.” Ryoma said with another little shrug. Momo nodded and they walked in silence for a little while, the sun sinking slowly behind the purple and pink clouds.
“Why so quiet?” Momo asked finally. He knew this was a stupid question, Ryoma was always quiet, but the silence was eating him worse than usual. The boy next to him shrugged again and looked up at him.
“What do you want to talk about Momo-senpai?” He asked, although without enthusiasm.
“Nothing in particular, I just wondered why you weren’t talking.”
“Mmm.”
“What was that mmm?” Momo asked defensively. “I’m serious!”
Ryoma shrugged again making Momo even more annoyed.
“You are so annoying!” He said, speeding up and turning to Ryoma with a frown on his face. “Why are you always being so smart assed about everything?”
“I’m not.” Ryoma said, still not showing any emotion, but he had finally brought his bronze eyes up to meet Momo’s violet ones. “I’m talking, what more do you want?”
Momo thought over this question. He walked backwards for a few more steps, staring at the green haired boy in front of him. Then he stopped and Ryoma also stopped to avoid a head on collision. Momo grabbed the younger teen by the shoulders and bent down, looking at him intensely.
“A little sincerity would be nice!” He yelled. He then let go of Ryoma, who was looking at him like he was nuts. “Forget it Echizen, never mind.”
“Trouble in paradise.” Ryoma said with a little smirk. Momo looked at him so quickly his neck creaked.
“Ouch!” He moaned in anger, bringing a hand up to rub the pain away.
“What?” Ryoma asked.
“Neck creaked.” Momo spat. This just wasn’t his day. First the whole thing with Eiji, now Ryoma was making fun of him.
“I’m not making fun of you Momo-senpai, I just think it’s funny that all this has happened in such a short time.” Ryoma said pointedly, which made sense to Momo. It did seem crazy.
“Yeah, I can see that.” Momo said. “I probably look pretty crazy right now.”
“You don’t know the half of it.” Ryoma said, remembering the detached look on Eiji’s face the last time he had seen him.
“What do you mean?”
“Never mind, I just want to go play tennis.” Ryoma said, trying to get away from the subject
“No, tell me.” Momo insisted.
“Well,” Ryoma started, his expression serious. “I can see what Kikumaru-senpai sees in you. You are pretty hot.”
Momo’s jaw dropped, he would never have expected to hear that from Echizen Ryoma. Those words alone had been enough to make his manhood stir a little. He searched the younger teen’s face for a sign that he was joking, and couldn’t find one.

Eiji ran from the room after Tezuka had looked away. He went into the hallway and had seen Momo stepping into the elevator. The doors had shut just as he had run up and he stood there looking at himself in the mirrored steel. What the hell was he doing? Tezuka Kunimitsu was the only man he wanted to be with, but it appeared Tezuka didn’t want to be with him anymore. What else was to be expected? He had showed up the next day with another man! ‘I am so stupid!’ He thought as he pushed the down arrow button. When the doors opened he got in and instead of pushing the L for Lobby, he pushed the B for basement where the cafeteria room was. The doors opened a few seconds later and Eiji walked out into the dimly lit hallway that led to the cafeteria. He walked it, head bowed, trying to straighten out his thoughts. On the one hand there was Tezuka, and Eiji had a feeling Tezuka could be the love of his life, but on the other hand, there is Momo, and Momo would always be sweet and would always be fun. There were so many complications to being with Tezuka because Tezuka was the captain of the tennis club. Being with Momo wouldn’t be a walk in the park either, but there wouldn’t be that obstacle to climb over. Then there was Fuji. They had been best friends for a long time, and then, because of Tezuka’s and his relationship, that was all over now. Why did things have to be so complicated?
Eiji got to the café and ordered a burger and some fries and sat down. As he ate he thought it over some more. By the time he was finishing up, he was certain of only one thing. If he didn’t try to work it out with Tezuka, he would regret it forever. He threw away his trash and walked back down the hall, trying to decide if he should go home for the night and come back after school tomorrow, or just go for it now. He couldn’t do it now, he had no idea what he wanted to say. He got into the elevator and looked at the buttons. He closed his eyes and pushed a button.

Tezuka watched as Oishi walked back into the room sheepishly. “I forgot my third notebook, and I have to have that one” He said with a chuckle. “It has the lap running schedule you gave me in it.”
Tezuka nodded, and he looked at the table. He hadn’t even noticed the notebook was sitting there. This thing with Eiji had his nerves all crazy and he hated being like that. Oishi grabbed the book and bowed slightly, walking from the room again. Tezuka lay there thinking about things. He decided he would be done with Eiji. Things were just too difficult for them to be together, and he couldn’t handle the stress. As if he didn’t have enough to worry about without having to think about how to work things out with the redhead. Besides, he had been single basically his whole life, he didn’t need to be with anyone. He got up and went into the bathroom. He washed his face and brushed his teeth, already feeling better now that he had made his decision. He changed into his pajama’s, seeing as how it was beginning to get late, and then he climbed back into his bed and picked up a book on American Literature that his mother had brought for him along with his clothes. It was for his English class at school, and he would not allow himself to fall behind in his studies just because he was in the hospital. That was in Oishi’s third notebook. His course schedule and other random notes so that the vice captain could bring his work to him the two days he would be out of school. He was soon deep in the biography of a man with the pen name of Mark Twain. He had pushed all thoughts of Kikumaru Eiji from his mind.

The elevator dinged and whirred to life. When it came to a stop he opened his eyes but didn’t dare look up and see where he had ended up. The doors opened and he walked into the hallway. He heard the elevator close behind him and he looked over at the sign on the wall. Third floor. ‘Oh great!’ He thought ‘I didn’t end up on either floor!’ He walked down the hall anyways, past door after door of hospital rooms. Some were open, some were closed but almost all of them were full of patients. At the end of the hall, the door was open and he could see a woman laying in the bed. On the table beside her was a vase of flowers. As Eiji got closer, a man appeared from the area of the room Eiji couldn’t see. He walked to the bedside and sat down in the visitor’s chair. He grabbed the woman’s hand and held it to his chest. He said something that Eiji couldn’t hear and kissed the hand. Eiji stood there for a minute, watching the loving way the man held the woman’s hand, rubbing it gently with his thumb, and that made up his mind. He turned around quickly and almost jogged to the elevator. He hastily pushed the down arrow. When he got into the elevator he pushed the 2 and stood against the back wall, his heart racing. When the doors opened again, he got out slowly and walked to Tezuka’s doorway. He stopped there, unable to go through just yet. He stood just outside, and took a few deep breaths. Then he cleared his throat and walked inside.
