“I knew you would be strong enough to do it. Why don’t you just kill me?!”
Arthur looked at the vampire, bound up and attached to the wall.
‘Because you not deserve peace,’ he thought, not caring if Alucard in his current situation would get his thought unspoken.
He stepped over and cut the vampires wrist again. Only then he started murmuring , just the words the alchemist had taught him. Blood flew richly form the wound and he had to suppress the memory of his private chamber. He had let that much blood out of the vampire in the last two days, that he couldn’t believe there was still blood and life left in him. Possibly he could go on with this for ages. He had intended to let him run dry, but he now realized that would apparently be impossible… But meanwhile the creature had gone considerably weaker and the bonds were likely to hold him in place quite reliably, or at least Arthur thought and hoped so.
He left the room to talk to the alchemist. The doctor was there, too, still playing with a blood sample. “He is incredible! He just does not die…! “
“Tell me something new! And I would rather have you show less enthusiasm about that fact regarding the circumstances…”
“O.k., another topic then. How is Walter?”
“Still in the hospital, but he will be ok. Will the bonds hold him?”
“Yeah, I think so. They will only release him if you, or one of your blood, calls him. Just as you requested. But I can’t tell definitely what might happen if he is not fed while time is passing. Maybe he will be too weak to answer a call, even if the seals would let him.”
Arthur laughed bitterly. “Do not worry, he will be alright. I am sure of this. Prepare the seals for the door.”
Arthur turned and entered the room one last time.
He looked at the vampire for long. The vampire eyed him back.
“I still have no idea why you did it. We are all under restraints. Didn’t we have a decent time? Didn’t you have fun fighting? Didn’t you wish to serve Hellsing and fulfil our bond? So…why?”
“I need no reason to wage war, master. Maybe I am just the selfish being you want to see in me. Maybe I was just bored stiff and looking for something to occupy my time…Maybe your bloody experiments have tightened our bond beyond imagination and it is my innermost desire to be near to you and serve you with all I can, which here meant getting rid of that low woman for you and improve the future of Hellsing by eliminating her from the gene pool … and maybe I do not want to go back, when I already was so close to you…” He laughed. His laughter multiplied and echoed from the walls.
“You are truly mad, aren’t you?” Arthur stared at him in horror.
“No,” Alucard said lowly, while the echoes still haunted the room. ”Just a bad looser, that’s all.”
When Arthur had left and closed the door, the vampire added softly, “And maybe my next master will indeed love me and bring peace upon me, when the right time comes, while you couldn’t, my beloved, flawed master.”

Arthur Hellsing paid a visit to Island’s office in London a week later.
“You really did it? You got rid of him at last? Congratulations! We did the cover up for the deaths only with this postulate, remember! Was it hard? You look tired…no wonder! ”
“Yes, I did it, Islands. Happy now?”
“Indeed. Great day. Uhhh, he really was creepy, wasn’t he? I’m glad this is over. How’s Walter? You will need him now more than ever.”
“He is recovering. He is not happy with the situation, so don’t tell him you are.”
That was the understatement of the year. Arthur had told him, too, that he had destroyed the vampire after what had happened. He thought that the best cover up. The last thing he needed now was his best available killer hunting the sublevels sheep eyed. But now he wondered, if he shouldn’t rather have told him the truth… Walter had been so deeply shocked about the news that he refused to come back to the mansion.
Arthur sighed. In the end he would get by, he was sure about it. At least he hoped not to be mistaken. He needed him badly for Hellsing more then ever. And Walter needed the organisation in turn. Still Arthur could hardly understand why Walter made such a fuss from it, having very nearly been killed himself.
Island sniffled. “Say, Arthur, are you drunk? It’s just 11 o’clock in the morning.”
“Oh good then, I can have a beer in the pub.” With this Arthur turned on his heels and left.
It was only many years after the events that Arthur discovered, that his butler matter of factly did not even remember that he had been Alucards lover for quite a long time.
Very thoughtful of that bloody bat, he thought, while he on the other hand remembered very clearly – the pleasure as well as the rest. And so this thought indeed was the closest feeling to affection he could come up with nowadays towards his locked away monster.
He could not avoid being haunted in his dreams by the vision of the cute, red eyed girl, but as long as he was awake a good whisky seemed never to fail if he wanted to lock his vampire out of his conscience as well as out of this presence.
