Fire Pit Escape
Title: Fire Pit Escape
Author: Jigoku no Miko
Author’s Quote: It’s only funny until someone gets hurt… than it’s hilarious!
“Miaka come on its about to leave!” Keisuke yelled from behind the corner of a wall where Miaka was buying food at a stand across the hall.
“Hey Keisuke!” Kana yelled finally spotting the blonde.
“Hey!” He waved at Kana before Miaka went running past him.
“Safe!” She yelled before running into a wall. Keisuke smiled devilishly before turning to look at Miaka who was plastered to the wall, walking over Kana looked at the girl before laughing and shaking her head.
“That’s my little sister, only an idiot would run into a wall. Hang on I’ll get you peeled off of there.” Keisuke cried running to the aid of his wall papered sister.
*****This was the beginning, little did I know the events that had happened in the past were about to come back and haunt me and turn me into a prime character of “The Universe of the Four Gods.”*****(Kana)
*****
We sat on the train Tamahome had clung to the window staring at the tall buildings as the monorail sped by them faster than he could have ever imagined. Keisuke, Tetsuya and Kana all wedged on one side while Miaka scarfed down her breakfast across from them, Tamahome sat… well… he had the window seat put it that way. ^_^
“Couldn’t we have gotten separate seats?” Tetsuya mumbled slouching in his chair and sweat dropping.
“Wow Miaka! It’s so fast!!” Tamahome cried with wide eyes.
“Tamahome could you maybe take off your shoes?” Keisuke questioned trying to calm the man but his eyes just got bigger when he saw a building larger than the others.
“Yui really wanted to come, she said her fever was down too. Tamahome I’m done eating so lets talk.” Miaka grabbed his collar and pulled him back down to reality and away from the window where they otherwise would have had to have him surgically removed from.
“She really pushes herself so you have to be firm with her.” Tetsuya whispered daydreaming before Keisuke got in his face with a suspicious look.
“Oh really. Did you tell her not to come?” He questioned before Tetsuya began to sweat.
“Well… umm… uh…” He stammered before Kana put her hand on Keisuke’s chest and pushed him into his seat with an annoyed look.
“Your acting like Tamahome.” She growled noting he had crawled over her to eye Tetsuya.
“What is that supposed to mean!!” Miaka and Tamahome cried at the same time. Kana looked up at them wide-eyed before ducking behind Keisuke’s shoulder.
“Nothing, nothing at all.” She muttered before Keisuke bent down to whisper in her ear.
“Your acting like Tetsuya.” He mocked before Kana and Tetsuya both slugged him.
*****The five of us were on our way to Morioka once more, this time to visit Suzuno’s grave*****(Keisuke)
*****
They walked through the graveyard after Toki picked them up from the monorail station. Toki, Suzuno’s adopted grandson, lead the way through the graveyard that he visited frequently to Suzuno’s grave. Kana and Keisuke who were sharing an umbrella and Tetsuya were right behind Toki as Miaka and Tamahome lingered back a little bit. Tamahome paused on a small set of stairs when he thought he heard someone call his name.
“Tamahome what’s wrong?” Miaka questioned stopping next to him.
“Nothing, I thought I heard someone call my name. Must have been my imagination.” Tamahome shrugged it off and the two caught up to the others.
Toki bowed in front of the gravestone of Suzuno, Ohsugi and said a prayer to let her spirit know they were there and cared.
“While we’re here why don’t we visit Takiko’s grave.” Toki suggested before everyone headed to the other end of the cemetery. “Grandma’s father and Takiko’s father Einosuke Okuda were good friends.”
“That’s why you took care of Takiko all this time.” Miaka whispered.
“Even though we’re not even related my grandfather fell in love with Suzuno.” Toki smiled.
“I assume you mean your real grandfather right? But if you’re here he must have had kids, so if he produced your dad you must have another grandfather in there somewhere and…” Tetsuya rambled while Toki laughed.
“Tetsuya you’re rambling.” Kana mocked before Keisuke looked at her with a cocked eyebrow.
“It was a real life love story.” They had to go down another set of stairs to get the level of the graveyard where Takiko was layed to rest, Tamahome stopped swearing her heard the voice again.
“Tamahome?” Miaka whispered worriedly.
“There it was again, calling me.” Tamahome whispered confused.
“Are you alright? Maybe you’re just tired from riding on something your not used to.” She offered an explanation.
“Hmm? Of course.” He reassured her.
“Too much excitement for you Tamahome?” Keisuke mocked from up ahead.
“I think he’s gone schizophrenic.” Kana added before Miaka glared at them.
“Anaki. Kana.” She growled under her breath. Everyone excluding Tamahome stood in front of the grave.
“This is Takiko Okuda’s grave, along with her father Einosuke.” Toki whispered. Tamahome stood where he was on the stairs for a moment before someone’s voice was ringing in his head.
‘I am the Genbu no Miko, help me before I disappear completely.’ She whispered before Tamahome’s eyes went wide.
“Genbu no Miko…? But why…?” Tamahome whispered before the unmistakable bright light of Suzaku engrossed him. Kana leaned heavy on Keisuke’s shoulder and shook with pain.
“Kana?” Keisuke whispered. Miaka saw the red light out of the corner of her eye and turned to look at him with wide eyes.
“Tamahome!” She yelled before running to him, but he disappeared just seconds before she reached him. “No! NO!” Miaka landed on the ground and yelled up into the stormy clouds. Kana watched before Miaka got up and ran yelling his name looking for Tamahome.
“Miaka!” Tetsuya yelled but Keisuke put a hand on his shoulder.
“She’ll be okay I have faith.” He whispered before Kana groaned, awakening from her earlier state of pain. “Are you okay?” Keisuke questioned before she looked up at him blurry eyed.
“Ye-yeah, I don’t understand.” She whispered standing up straight. Keisuke put an arm around her shoulders and felt her forehead.
“Cripes! You have a fever.” He yelled taking his hand from her forehead.
“I what?” She cocked an eyebrow and looked at him out of the corner of her eye.
“Come on back to the house, you can rest there.” Toki whispered before turning and heading in the opposite direction.
“What?! But I’m fine and what about Miaka!?” Kana yelled exasperated.
“Tetsuya can you make sure she goes back to Toki’s and lays down, I’m gonna go look for Miaka.” Keisuke questioned before Tetsuya shook his head.
“Yeah, sure. Come on Kana.” He whispered nodding in the direction Toki had gone in.
“I’m fine! I’m old enough to know when I’m sick!!” She yelled annoyed at the two.
“But you’re stubborn enough to ignore it if you are.” Keisuke noted before taking off in search of Miaka.
“Come on.” Tetsuya put a hand on her shoulder but she shrugged him off.
“I know the way dammit I’m gonna kill him I swear, I’m not two years old you know I’m 23 for crimaniddleys sake!” She huffed storming as she caught up with Toki. Tetsuya watched after her with a large sweat drop running down the back of his head.
“Oh boy, leave it to Keisuke to choose the stubborn chicks.” He murmured.
“I HEARD THAT!” Kana yelled back to him before the size of his sweatdrop increased and he started for Toki’s.
*****
“Here it will bring down your fever and calm your nerves a little.” Toki offered her a small cup of steaming tea.
“Arrigato.” Kana whispered stirring the tea before sipping on it. Her, Toki and Tetsuya all sat in a small living room, it was set up to accommodate maybe 6 people with tan carpet and a sky blue couch, love seat and chair. Kana sat on the loveseat as Tetsuya and Toki sat on the couch. Keisuke entered a moment later without Miaka.
“Keisuke. Where’s Miaka?” Tetsuya questioned before Keisuke sat on the loveseat next to Kana, she eyed him for a moment before scooting up against the arm, as far away from him as she could get.
“I found her and tried to talk her into coming here but she insisted that Tamahome was out there, she was drenched. I tried to give her my umbrella but she refused, I told her we’d be here…” He hung his head and shook it with his eyes closed. “I couldn’t watch her out there.” Kana bit her lip; she knew something but didn’t know if she had been hallucinating or if it had been real so she kept her mouth shut.
“She’ll get sick out there.” Kana whispered before Keisuke looked up at her.
“Speaking of sick how are you?” He questioned before she eyed him annoyed.
“What did happen out there? It was so weird you just collapsed when that light appeared.” Tetsuya added before Kana stared intently into her teacup.
“It was strange, when Tamahome was surrounded by that… light I felt negative energy nearby but I also felt another power fighting it. The next thing I new that negative energy I had been feeling surrounded me and all I could feel was pain, I couldn’t even think straight and then it was just gone…” She summed before Keisuke cut her off.
“Like Tamahome.” He whispered confused.
*****
Everyone was on the monorail again, Miaka slept in Keisuke’s arms as Kana stared out the window confused and worried. Tetsuya was in the small telephone booth in the back of the train talking to Yui.
“Yeah he vanished, it was that light… Yeah right now, I’m with them right now… This is driving me crazy!” He whispered into the phone before hanging up with the young girl and walking towards the three, he crouched in the isle and set his elbow on the arm of Keisuke’s seat. “Keisuke, Yui thinks the same thing. For some reason Tamahome was sucked into the book. I’ll get into that room soon and have that book by the end of the day.” He whispered as to not wake the sleeping girl.
“But if you go there… it’s the middle of the night.” Keisuke stated worried that his friend might get thrown in jail.
“Cool dashing thieves are all the rage now a days right?” Tetsuya joked.
In the back of the bus there was a scrolling marquee with a news article, for some reason or another it caught Kana’s attention and she gasped.
“What is it?” Keisuke questioned before Kana pointed to the back of the bus at the marquee, the two looked up and only caught four words. ‘Reference room this morning.’ “What did that say?” He questioned the girl who was sitting shaking her head.
“Tetsuya is that vest of yours fire proof?” She questioned.
“No, why?” Tetsuya raised an eyebrow.
“Than you might have a little trouble getting into the reference room.”
*****
“Miaka’s not eating.” Yui whispered as her and Keisuke checked on the young woman who was sleeping. They went back to the living room where Kana and Tetsuya were sitting, Keisuke went into the kitchen.
“She wondered around in the rain for two hours looking for him, I couldn’t even watch her. Here.” Keisuke threw a beer to Tetsuya and sat in a chair, Kana sat on the floor next to it while Tetsuya sat on the floor across from him, Yui was next to him on the couch. A small coffee table was in between them a paper sat on it turned to a page with the picture of the reference room at the National Library. At least what was left of it. A small fire was set in the reference room burning over 200 files.
“Let’s go over what we know again, first of all the book didn’t burn up.” Tetsuya whispered before taking a sip of his beer.
“Right, Einosuke wrote that he tried all he could to burn it but couldn’t. That’s why he asked for it to be sealed away.” Yui added.
“I don’t think he just tried to burn it he probably tried everything to make it disappear. So somebody stole it and then set the fire, the timing is too close. It happened this morning!” Tetsuya yelled.
“If they were after the book, they wouldn’t have had to set the fire, would they?” Keisuke questioned confused.
“Right so somebody should go get into what’s left of the reference room and poke around to see if they can find anything.” Kana moted from the floor before Keisuke shook his head in thought.
“But they’ll have it cut off with police and be looking for clues and fingerprints all day.”
“Yeah but not at this time of night.” Kana smiled before Keisuke looked at her out of the corner of his eye.
“What are you implying?” Tetsuya questioned.
“I’ll go and search for The Universe of the Four Gods.” She stated matter-of-factly before everyone’s eyes popped out of their heads.
“NANI!!!!!!?” They all yelled in unison.
“It’s simple for a witch.” She shrugged.
“Your teleportation.” Yui whispered forgetting the girl had powers in and out of The universe of the Four Gods.
“Yep.” Kana stated with a smile.
“Now way it’s too dangerous!” Keisuke yelled leaning forward to look down at her.
“You worry too much.” Kana rolled her eyes and let out a sigh before standing up.
“I’m allowed to, no!” Keisuke stood and faced her. “No way are you going!”
“Watch me.” She whispered before disappearing, Keisuke reached out to grab her but landed on the floor.
“Kana! You twit, you always have to have things your way don’t you.” Keisuke growled climbing back up into his chair, Tetsuya and Yui looked at each other and shrugged before turning back to Keisuke.
“I’m wondering if someone else knows about the book besides us.” Yui whispered looking to her lap.
“And if they open it up will they be pulled into the book like before?” Tetsuya whispered to himself before Keisuke spit his beer everywhere. “Tchty!” He yelled putting an arm up and back away from the man.
“The phone! I have to call Toki!!” Keisuke yelled jumping from his chair which he had stood up on and running down the hallway. Grabbing the portable at the end of the hallway sitting on a small table he dialed Toki’s number quickly.
“Yeah I was thinking of calling you too.” Toki whispered after finding out who was on the other end.
“I knew it. What about the records on Takiko? Anything show that she existed?” Keisuke questioned fearing he was right.
“I’ll check again tomorrow morning along with that grave.”
*****
“What’s going on here? All four miko’s have appeared in the story right? That ended “The Universe of the Four Gods” didn’t it? This isn’t king of the mountain ya know!” Tetsuya yelled before standing and approaching the window that looked over Tokyo. Taking off his sunglasses he gripped them tightly in his right fist. “You can’t just push in and say out of my way I’m the new Miko! This isn’t King of the mountain you know! Why does poor Takiko have to disappear?! So… so as new Miko’s enter the book…!” He whispered before his glasses broke in two from the pressure.
“It’ll happen to Yui and me too.” Miaka whispered from the doorway that led in the hall to the bedrooms and bathroom. Suddenly a small wind whirled in the room before Kana landed on her ass on the floor.
“Itai, I’ve really gotta work on those landings.” she murmured before standing, everyone except Miaka looked at her with questioning eyes.
“What happened to you?” Miaka questioned cocking her head.
“Fall in a fire pit and see what you come out looking like.” Kana growled defensively. Soot was on her forehead and right cheek along with her hands. Walking over to the sink she cleaned her hands and moistened a washcloth before washing her face. “Ssspt Itai!!” She whispered taking the washcloth away briskly and looking at the blood on it. “Oh great just what I needed.” She muttered to herself before Keisuke came over to her to see what was wrong.
“Ouch, that looks bad. I’ll grab the first aid kit.” Keisuke whispered before grabbing the box from under the sink.
“You keep one under your sink?” Kana muttered before Keisuke looked from her to Miaka and back.
“There’s one in every room just incase.” He chuckled as he dug through the box for an alcohol wipe. “This may sting a little.” He whispered before wiping at the cut on her forehead. Immediately Kana shrunk back with a tiny yelp.
“What the hell is that ?!?! Liquid salt!??!” she yelled before holding up her fingers in a make-shift cross before Keisuke rolled his eyes.
“Tetsuya, a little help please.” Keisuke said before Tetsuya came up behind Kana and grabbed her arms so Keisuke could finish cleaning her cut and put a band-aid over it. When Tetsuya released her she stormed into the living room and flopped onto the floor with a loud thud.
“So I take it you didn’t find the book.” Yui whispered before Kana looked up at her annoyed. “Hey don’t give me that look I didn’t pounce on you.” She whispered defensively holding up her hands.
“Sorry, no I didn’t find it, it’s gone the strange thing is nothing else was out of place. I mean yeah everything was charred to a crisp but it looked as though everything that was on the floor was there because the shelves burned and fell. Whoever went in there looking for the book knew exactly what they were looking for and knew exactly where it was.” Kana summed.
“But it doesn’t make any sense. Why would someone burn the room afterwards?” Keisuke pondered before Kana shrugged.
“I dunno, boredom, they were afraid someone would find one of their hairs or fingerprints or maybe they were just a pyro and thought the flames were pretty…we’ll never know I guess.” Kana mused.
“There must be someway to contact the other world to see if anything has changed, or if there is in fact a new Miko there.” Tetsuya whispered looking to Yui worriedly.
“Kana, do you remember that incantation you used to contact Subaru?” Keisuke questioned.
“Of course I do but what does that have to do with any……… NO WAY IN HELL!!!!” She roared standing and spinning to stare at him wide-eyed.
“But you’re the only chance we have!” Yui whined.
“No way! YADAA!!!” She yelled crossing her arms and sitting on the couch in a huff.
“Kana, Takiko’s life depends on it.” Keisuke sat back on the couch.
“What do you mean she’s already dead.” She muttered.
“She’s disappearing, her whole existence will be gone, please.” He pleaded with the look he knew she couldn’t resist.
“Not the look, I hate the look.” She crossed her arms and rolled her eyes. “Fine but for the record I’m only doing this for her sake.” She muttered. “I’m going to need five white candles, and sugar.” She whispered before Keisuke got up to get the candles and Tetsuya went for the sugar. Clearing off the small coffee table Kana sat her pentacle necklace in the middle before putting a circle of sugar around it and the five candles around that. Lighting them Keisuke turned out the lights and she focused.
“By the magic of the moon
By fairy spell
By the mysteries which here do well
Dreams, desires and mystery might
Born on moonbeams silver light
Come now before me in my mystical circle!” She yelled before the candles flickered and Kana opened her eyes.
“Subaru? Ya here?” She grimaced.
“Yes, she’s here but I’m afraid I’ll have to talk for her, she lost her voice.” Tokaki stated.
“Oh, it’s you.” Kana growled remembering that day in the rain.
“She say’s it’s been a while.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah listen anything… strange happening there? Like is the world going weird or anything? Anyone randomly falling from the sky?” She questioned rolling her eyes.
“Umm… now that you mention it she has been feeling a little sick lately but other than that no.” Tokaki stated for his wife.
“Alright thanks.”
“Wait, Byakko no miko, can I ask you one thing before you go?” Tokaki’s voice got lower before Kana huffed annoyed.
“Sure whatever, shoot.”
“Are you happy there? Is that what you really want? To be there and not here, to not be with him?” Kana gasped before leaning forward.
“Goodbye Tokaki.” She whispered. She blew out the candles before Tetsuya turned the lights back on. “Happy?” Kana growled glaring at Keisuke. He just looked at her with a questioning gaze before she flopped back on the floor.
“We should go out to Toki’s tomorrow, he might need some help trying to find the files on Takiko’s existence.” Tetsuya stated as the others nodded.
“Me, Tetsuya and Kana will go. You two stay here and try to keep your mind off things okay?” Keisuke whispered to the two younger girls.
“Hai.” They whispered in unison. Soon Miaka went back to bed and Tetsuya took Yui home. Keisuke and Kana still sat in the living room in an awkward silence both contemplating different things.
“Kana?” He whispered before she looked up to him from the spot on the wall she had been so intently focused on.
“Hmm?”
“What did he mean? Why did he want to know if you were happy here and who aren’t you with?” He whispered, he himself had deep feelings for the girl but he could never find the right time or the right words to tell her.
“Honestly I’m not quite sure. I can understand the whole asking if I was happy thing I mean I was their miko…sort of…ish… but I don’t understand who “him” is.” She whispered, a tiny white lie never hurt anyone right?
“Oh, right, sorry.” She stood and walked over to him before placing her hand under his chin and raising his eyes to hers.
“Nothing to worry about.” She smiled sweetly before heading towards the door. “I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Yeah in the morning, Oyasumi.”
“Oyasumi Keisuke.”
