DN Mpreg Ch. X

"Hey, Ryuuzaki, is everything okay?" Matsuda was the first to ask this question as soon as L, Light and Watari entered the investigation room.

"I'm okay, Matusuda-san," L replied causing Light to give him a puzzled look when they both took their seats. In the meantime, L and Light had been reattached to each other much to the relief of Light. The rest of the team welcomed them back, but after L's reply to Matsuda's question, had got the hint they should ask no further questions about that subject. As L was going over some of the Yotsuba data, a small notification appeared in the right corner of his screen; it was a message from Light.

"When are we going to tell them?"

L glanced over at Light who was pretending to be looking over some data. He replied, "I haven't decided what to tell them yet. I still need to get over the slight shock of it all, too."

"I know but soon we won't be able to hide that fact that you're pregnant with our baby."

'Our baby'. Light had used those words, and L looked over to him and typed a reply. "No, this is my baby. There is no us, I told you that this morning." Before L had a chance to react, Light jumped out of his chair and grabbed L's collar.

"That's bullshit and you know it!" Light yelled angrily in his face. Then he felt L's foot kick him in the stomach and he let go.

"Light! Ryuuzaki!" Chief Yagami shouted out at them, "If you have something to discuss, I suggest you do it in a calm manner or leave this room." The rest of the team stood on edge, waiting to see what was going to happen next. Light picked himself up off the floor and sat as his computer again.

"You can't deny I'm the father of the child," Light typed on his keyboard furiously, "You can't push me out of its life."

"Yagami-kun, I would prefer very much to continue this conversation some other time," L replied much to Light's annoyance.

"Fine..."

Eventually after a long day of work, the rest of the team had gone home. L and Light were able to talk again. As usual most of their private conversations happened in the bedroom since there were no microphones or cameras installed there.

"I'm sorry I lost my temper earlier, Ryuuzaki," Light said, sitting beside the crouched detective. He truly was sincere, although his stomach still hurt from where L's foot had made contact with it.

"Light-kun, you have to understand that no matter what feelings we might have toward each other, you are still my suspect."

"I know... but we're going to have to tell the others sooner or later about your pregnancy."

L gave a sigh; for once he was finding it hard to come up with a plan. If he told the others he was pregnant they'd ask who the father was. Even if he were to lie about it, they would figure out eventually that the baby is Light's. If they figured that out then they would claim L was unable to continue on the case. And if he told them, told them everything, how would they react about him? Would they continue to work with a person who was literally a freak of nature? Though they got on his nerves and they often grated each other, L was actually starting to feel comfortable around them enough. As for Soichirou Yagami, L had respect for the man, the same respect he had for Watari; and like Watari, Soichirou would support his son, but that did not mean he would support the pregnant male detective. L now wondered how he would continue the next few months and after the baby is born. Would they catch Kira before then? He hoped so as he didn't want his child to grow up in a world controlled by Kira.

He didn't like that last thought. It made his stomach curl (or it could be the little sprog inside of him). Had he already decided on keeping it? No...not yet. There were...things he needed to think about, serious things. L knew this case may be his last, but he assumed that he would be killed by Kira, not by...this. Burned into his eyelids was the ultrasound image and the serious look in Dr. Uramura's eyes. He could hear the rhythmic and spastic heart beat of the fetus in his ears, and the deadly warning from his doctor.

"I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet about the baby," he answered, "There's a potential risk to mine and the baby's health. I might not be able to carry this baby to full term without complications."

"What are you saying, Ryuuzaki?" Light's hazel eyes looked into L's onyx coloured eyes.

He remembered what the doctor had said; was he willing to take the risk? "I'm saying that perhaps me having a baby might not be such a good idea. It should not even happen."

"But you're healthy right now and so is the baby?"

"Yes."

"Then," Light answered slowly, "if you want to make a decision like that, I suggest we discuss it first."

"I told you before, we aren't a couple there is nothing to discuss." The crow-feathered hair detective picked at a loose string on his sleeve so he would not have to look at the teenager beside him.

"Ryuuzaki... it's my child, too. I want to help you, I want to be there."

"And what if you are Kira and this is just some trick of yours?" He finally looked at him with his eyes serious and set.

"Will you shut up about Kira for once? You keep wanting me to be Kira and I'm sick and tired of it." Light grit his teeth in annoyance, a vein in his neck protruding underneath his skin, "What if I was Kira, huh? Well I know for a fact I'm Light Yagami right now. The current Kira we're after resides at Yotsuba, so cut with your crap."

L looked right into Light's eyes. They were clear and bright and his voice, despite sounding agitated, did not sound like his was lying, and L was sure he was telling the truth, yet in the back of his mind those percentages kept niggling. 'Don't allow yourself to be his victim,' a little voice in his head told him, 'Remember who you believe he is.' After reminding himself of this, L turned back to pulling his sleeve apart, thread by thread.

"I don't care if you don't want a relationship with me," Light continued, "but I do care about the fact you won't let me have any say about our child."

Obsidian eyes looked into caramel for a second before looking away. The silence was uncomfortable for them both. Light sighed, feeling that he was not making any progress with the man. However, he was quite surprised to feel the space between them shorten significantly with the detective closer to him than he had been since yesterday. L rested his head on Light's shoulder.

"I've never been in this kind of situation before," he said with a sigh.

"Well, that makes two of us." His arms wrapping around the pregnant detective.

The awkward silence between them did not give them justice. Though he was basically being a hypocrite by practically snuggling up against his prime suspect, he could not help but feel more comfortable--yet still uncomfortable--by being in Light's arms. He knew that inside him a baby was forming, cell by cell, yet it still did not click into his mind. He was trapped in a realm of dream and wake, and he could not tell the difference. Somewhere along driving to the hospital and entering the examination room, he had entered into a different paradox where everything was exactly the same, except for men having babies.

"I need to pee." L pulled out of Light's grip and lead the boy into the restroom. While L did his business, Light watched him from behind.

"It's strange," he said, "Now that I know, it all makes sense. The vomiting, the food cravings, the mood swings-"

"I didn't have any mood swings," L said, still continuing to urinate.

Light gave the back of the detective's head a look. "Are you kidding?" He folded his arms, "Do you know how many times you snapped at Matsuda? I'm surprised he managed to leave the room before he burst into tears."

"...He cried?" For a while, L had been having trouble keeping his emotions under the radar, and now, with the knowledge he previously did not have, he felt guilt biting its fangs into him. Matsuda was trying his best and L just had to bitch at him for every little thing not done exactly the way he wanted it to.

"Matsuda really likes you and has a lot of respect for you despite the strange things you do. He's just trying to be your friend, whether you like it or not," Light said now as they made their way toward the kitchen for dinner. L was pacing behind Light this time thinking about what Light had just told him. He was still getting accustomed to the idea of friendship. The two of them ate in silence with Watari. Light was enjoying what the old man had made; it was something called Roast Dinner. He assumed it was a dish from England since he already figured out that's where L and Watari must be from. This made him wonder again if they were related? Perhaps he should ask L later about it since he wanted to know if L had any other family, though he could not see the detective conversing about his entire history.

Watari cleared their plates and the pair headed off back to their room. It was rather late and L was tired, so they headed to bed rather earlier than Light was used to. He lay awake on his back while the detective was curled up on the other side of their makeshift double bed.

"Ryuuzaki?" Light softly called out after several seconds of complete silence. L responded with a tired groan. "Do you have any family?"

"No I don't."

"Oh, I thought you and Watari..."

"We are not related, although I have known Watari for a very long time."

"He said earlier that he practically raised you."

"You could say he is like a father to me." L gave an audible yawn. "I'm tired, Light-kun, it's been a long day."

Caramel eyes stared at nothing in the darkness. "True, yet there's still so much I don't know about you and now you're pregnant with our child. You know everything about me."

L rolled over now and was met by Light's gaze. "And that's the way I would like it to stay. I told you before, you are my suspect."

"Yes but it's not like I'm going to ..."

"Light, I'd like to sleep now," the detective butted in, sounding annoyed.

"Kira can only kill you if he has a name and a face, and I don't know your name, so there." Light knew what he said was childish, but he was trying to get his point across. However, L ignored him and instead wrapped himself up in his half of the covers.

"Good night, Light-kun."

The Kira suspect was still unsatisfied by the response he had gotten and lay away wondering about L's past. Who was he really? He knew that L was was part Japanese and English by the way he looked; or was he a different type of Asian? Perhaps French? Or maybe Italian? American? L's back was turned to him and after a slight hesitation he stroked L's silky locks. The detective stirred and then settled back down again. Light was still annoyed by the fact L would not let him hold him.

The next morning, after they were dressed and ready for work, they first had to converse with Matsuda and Aizawa while Mogi and Soichirou spoke with the vice commander chief of the NPA. After a few hours when they returned, Soichirou dropped a bomb on them.

"There is no one to recruit now that the Japanese Police have yielded to Kira," he said.

"What?!" Both Matsuda and Aizawa called out. Even L and Light turned their heads when they heard such startling news. Soichirou looked more disgruntled and the stress was adding more wrinkles to his eyes.

Light looked at L beside him, sitting squat in his chair, when he heard that both his father and Mogi had turned in their resignations. This made him more than frustrated, it made him angry. Kira was becoming more powerful, and without aid of the Japanese police, he would have an upper hand. Their resources in Japan were quickly disintegrating, and he wasn't sure of what others L could conjure up as global as Kira was becoming.

"Mogi and I have already discussed it," Chief Yagami continued, "We are going to remain here and work with L. Aizawa, if you want to continue on the Kira case you'll have to work with us and resign from the NPA. We are not longer allowed to work on the case if we are police officers. Take your time to decide as each of you has your own life."

"Yeah, especially if you have a wife and kids," Matsuda piped up.

L sat in his chair besides Light, looking up at the monitors that displayed Misa doing her morning routine. " I think you should go back to the police. I was alone from the start. This case will only get more dangerous as we continue to investigate Kira. I will return one day to you as soon as I have Kira's head."

"Ryuuzaki, as long as I'm around you're not alone," Light spoke up, "Don't forget about this." He held up his cuffed wrist with the chain attaching him to L, or had he forgotten all about it?

The raven haired one did not even look up from his cake when he spoke. "Then you will help until I have caught Kira, the rest of you should return to the police."

"But, Ryuuzaki, aren't you the one who requested our help in the beginning?" Soichirou asked.

"That is true, Yagami-san," L answered, scraping the cake off his fork with his teeth, "but it was only because I needed a connection with the police. Now the police are no longer investigating Kira so your assistance is no longer needed."

"If we quit the NPA," Aizawa continued,"then were are technically unemployed, and as Matsuda said earlier, some of us have family, like you and I Chief."

"Yes but my children are all grown up. You have a young family who still need you." At the word 'family', L could feel the younger teen's eyes on him, but he refused to look anywhere else except watching Misa text to someone--which of course L would see a record of soon.

"I'm in," Matsuda said enthusiastically, " I want to help catch Kira too."

"It's not fair. What if I help out in my free time?" Aizawa asked.

"No, the NPA would only see you as my spy. If you are going back to the NPA, then don't think about returning here." Even while saying these harsh words, L rolled his tongue around in his mouth, and pulled out the stem of a cherry in a perfectly tied knot.

Suddenly Watari's voice was heard on the screen of L's laptop followed by the large Cloister Black letter 'W'. "Ryuuzaki, why are you not mentioning that from the beginning you have already prepared that should anything happen, everyone on the task force they would be financially secure no matter what, including being fired from the NPA?"

"Who asked you Watari?" L snapped at the screen. Light frowned but assumed it was one of his mood swings again, although Light was unaware that this was part of L's plan.

"I merely couldn't stand listening to this conversation any longer." There was a click, and with that Watari was gone.

"You were watching to see if I would quit or not!" Aizawa angrily said.

"Yes, I was testing you."

L could feel Aizawa seething behind him, but still don't not bother to look. "Alright then, I'm quitting here to return to the NPA. I don't like the way you work and I don't like you. I'm leaving."

"Take care," said L nonchalantly.

"And I hate how you say corny things like that!" The door slammed shut. L slurped his coffee before speaking.

"We should get back to work." He turned his attention to his screen. "Watari, could you contact Aiber and Wedy?"

"Yes."

"What the hell was that about?" Light yelled when they were safely upstairs and away from the others, "Could you not have been a little bit more sincere about Aizawa quitting?"

"I don't see what your problem is, Light-kun," the raven haired man replied, "Aizawa-san made his decision and I respected that." After thinking for a second, L felt that he was in the mood for some orange juice.

"You could have told us about the guarantee!" Light yelled even louder in anger, "He has to make sure that he has enough money to support his family!"

"Exactly, Light-kun." He found what he was looking for in the refrigerator and poured himself a glass, "I need to make sure that I have people on my team without any burdens holding them back. This is a very dangerous case with the most dangerous criminal."

Light bit his lip in anger and his nails dug deep into his palm. The only reason he didn't slug the bastard was because he was pregnant. "So children are a burden to you? You just, what? See them as blocking your path? Is that why you want to murder our baby?"

"For the last time," L said, his voice steadily rising, "There is no 'our'. It is only I, me, and my baby." He slammed the refrigerator door after he replaced the orange juice. "And as for your question about my idea of children being a burden, the answer is no. I have more understanding and sympathy for children than I do the adults I am forced to gamble lives with. I know that Aizawa-san has a young daughter to take care of and a wife, but I wanted him to choose, his family or Kira? If he stayed with us, how would his family feel if their daddy was killed? I needed him to see it from that side, not the financial income."

Light would admit to himself that he was not expecting L to be so...considering of family matters, but of course, L was now pregnant, which changed many things about the way he perceived things no doubt. "Still," Light said, his voice returned to it's normal volume, "You could have put it in better wording or maybe, I don't know, actually tell him that he should choose his family first if that's what you were really aiming for."

L took his time gulping down the glass of orange juice instead of answering his suspect's accusations. He wiped his mouth on his sleeve. "Either way, Light-kun, Aizawa made his choice. There is nothing you nor I can do."

There was a pregnant pause between them. L filled and drank another glass of orange juice in the meantime as he sat down at the table.

"You're ashamed, aren't you?" Light quietly asked, looking at the wall and not the detective. "About being pregnant, I mean."

L looked at the orange liquid in his glass, tipping it slightly so it would rise on one side. "Yes...I am ashamed." His dark eyes lifted to Light's, "Would you not also be? Being a pregnant man, destroying the foundation of life by a mistake made by science? Tell me, Light-kun, if it were you instead of I, how would you feel?"

The brunet looked down at his shoes. "I would...most likely also feel ashamed," he answered truthfully. L made a breathy sound through his nostrils. "But Ryuuzaki, if it were me that were pregnant, I still could not kill the life of an innocent, unborn child."

"Light-kun, can you really see me mothering and nurturing a baby? I'm an adult, but we both know that I am childish and immature. I know that I'm brilliant and with an I.Q. level that could make Mensa members jealous and I have good eyes for evidence and faults, but..." He shook his head with a sad smile playing on his lips, "You wanted to know more about me last night, did you not? Well here's something: I can't tie my shoes." He gave a fake, breathy laugh, "Pretty silly, huh? I also can't use chopsticks. That's why I use forks only."

Light's brow crinkled. "What does any of this have to do with raising a child? Einstein couldn't tie his shoes."

"But Einstein wasn't pregnant. He had a wife to help him with his children."

"You'll have me, L."

L closed his eyes and shook his head. "No I won't, Light-kun. If you're proven innocent and we catch Kira and I'm still alive, I'm not staying here. I'm going to be gone, and I'm not taking you with me."

It hurt so much to hear that. His chest tightened painfully. How could L be so cruel with his words and still keep a straight face? "Okay," Light said, voice barely above a whisper, "I'm obviously never going to change your mind. However, L," he lifted his eyes to look at the detective with all seriousness, "if you're afraid that you can't take care of the child, then give it to me. I can raise it, and unlike you, I'll actually allow you to spend all the time you want with it."

"I can't just drop off a baby on your shoulders. Besides you're only 18."

"It's better than killing it! I can raise it if you can't. I can get a good paying job and take care of it."

"And who would you tell your parents the mother is? Misa? I doubt she would agree to mothering an abomination."

Light sat down in the chair opposite of L and laid his head on the table and covered it with his arms. Ryuuzaki was the one that was pregnant, but it was Light that felt more emotional and hormonal. He wanted to cry. He wanted to scream. He wanted to punch L in the jaw. He wanted to hold L all night. He didn't know what he wanted anymore. After about fifteen minutes, he felt a tug on the chain and lifted his head and saw L standing beside him.

"I have to use the bathroom," the pregnant detective said. Light rose from his seat and followed the man up the stairs and into the bathroom to urinate. He watched the detective's back, thinking of L's previous words. L really wanted nothing to do with him anymore. To him, Light was just a suspect, one that he just so happened to have slept with. The pregnancy was all just a miscalculation. But to Light, there was so much more. If L did not want to see him again, then why the chain? Why keep him nearby at all times?

He needed to know if there was just even a sliver of a chance...

"Light-kun, what are you doing?"

The brunet pressed himself up against L's back, wrapping his arms around his waist. The detective stiffened. "I need to know," he whispered.

"Kn-know what?"

"I need to know if you felt any pleasure at all when you were with me?"

L bit his lip. "Sexually? In truth, yes. You were very satisfying."

"One more time," Light pressed his lips against the raven head's nape and lingered there slightly longer than anticipated, "Let this be my last time." His hands travelled lower and grabbed L's still exposed penis. He felt the others legs stiffen in instinct, but he continued. With both hands wrapped around the member, Light stroked and toyed with it. L controlled the sounds he was making, but half muted gasps did not escape Light's hearing. He kissed and nipped that slender, pale neck like he had so many times before. One hand left L's crotch and slowly traced under his shirt, pausing on his stomach.

"Light-kun," L whispered, "I told you we can't..."

"I know," Light muttered, "So we'll make our last time count."

'Break up sex,' L's mind informed. So that's what this is. By the younger man's talented hands, a low groan travelled out of his throat. His breathing was already starting to break into pants as his cock was stroked with calloused hands. His jeans were tugged a little ways lower. Light's hand up his shirt pinched his right nipple.

"Light," L muttered in English. It was a sigh of pleasure when L began to talk in his native tongue. He heard the drawer by the sink open, and without looking, knew that his now ex-lover was reaching for the lubrication that kept stored in the bathroom for such an occasion--not that they had planned on any of this happening in the first place. Against his hole, he felt Light's lubricated cock press into him. He put his hand on the wall to hold himself upright. He clamped his lips down tightly to cover up another moan from being released.

Light's motions were between rough and tender. He wanted L to feel innumerable amounts of pleasure, to bring him to an incredible orgasm, however, he also did not want to cause any harm to their child inside. There was no telling how exactly the fetus was set up in a male's body, so Light did not take it too far, and by the muffled groans he was receiving from the stubborn detective, he was doing just fine.

Blunt nails scraped down the wall. His eyes were tightly shut and his skin felt like it was humming in bliss. Light's hand still stroked him, the pace quickening and quickening. His prostate was sending thrills to wrack his brain. His brain no longer seemed to be working as he gave in for -hopefully- the last time to his suspect.

"Mmmm," dribbled out of L's mouth. His back stiffened and his seed spilt onto Light's hand, coming in spurts before falling into the toilet he was leaning above. He felt the cock inside him pull out with a squelching sound, but something felt off. He turned his head to see Light wiping up the excess lube from his member, then tuck it back in his pants and zip up; he did not cum. Their eyes met but no one spoke. Finally, L grabbed a handful of toilet paper and wiped himself clean, then pulled is trousers up around his waist again.

Break up sex meant it was officially over.

L flushed the used wads of paper down the toilet. "We should get back to work." he said hiding his embarrassment of yet again giving into Light. The younger male didn't say a word and followed L back to the investigation room.
__________________________________________

That night Light didn't sleep very well. He kept tossing and turning in a sleep filled with disturbing dreams. First he dreamt he was at the hospital and was being lead into a room by his father, there lay L on the bed with a baby in his arms. The next moment he was standing alone in a dark hall cradling his baby before L suddenly appeared. He demanded the baby and kept repeating that Light would never see his child again.

"The abomination has to go."

Light looked down at the baby in his arms and saw a twisted being that barely resembled a human. The thing did not make any noise most likely because it did not have a mouth. Just by holding it, he could feel how skinny and thin it was, and 'it' was a good name for it because it did not resemble a baby. His arms trembled at first, but then he brought the baby to his chest. It may be ugly, but it was still his. "No," he said firmly as L's spidery fingers took hold of the baby's blanket. Watari and his father had appeared now and they, too, were helping L take the baby from Light. "No please... don't!" Light called out but they ignored him. The being, his child, was forcibly taken from his arms. They did not hold it with love, but in a way so that it was not too intimate, as if the child was contagious or disgusting.

"Please don't take the baby..." He tried to run after them but it was like his legs were cemented to the floor. He cried and screamed. A pain was in his heart; he would never see his child again.

"Light," L called out in English, "It's not a child. It's a monster."

Red hot tears dribbled down his cheek and dripped off his chin. L gave the other a pitying look and continued walking. "You bastard!" Light screamed at the retreating back, "You're worse than Kira! You can't take it! Don't take the baby!"

While still in a slumber, L felt Light suddenly kick him. Lazily he lifted his head and heard Light utter a few words. "Don't ... take... baby..."

L touched the sleeping man's shoulder. "Light-kun?" At the his touch, Light gave a violent twitch and his eyes opened widely. He stared at L for a while, seeming to try to recognise him.

"Are you alright, Light-kun?" L asked. It was still early in the morning, the room was still dark except for the faint street lights outside. Light was trembling next to him but shook his head. In the faint light coming through the curtains, L saw beads of sweat on his forehead.

"What happened?" the older man asked.

Light swallowed and rubbed his eyes. "Yeah...just a stupid nightmare."

L frowned. "What was your nightmare about?"

"I can't really remember. Something stupid probably. Go back to sleep."

"Are you sure you're okay?"

He nodded. "I'm fine. Let's go back to sleep."

L rolled over and settled himself to sleep again leaving, Light to lie awake and feeling uneasy and not quite remembering why, but it had something to do with the baby. A few hours later, L woke feeling rather aroused from a dream he had been having. He woke Light up to go to the bathroom as usual. It was Sunday, which meant the only day off, and it also happened to be the day that Light would have to see Misa. During the week, she was out and about doing movie shoots and the only time she had off was in the weekend, which she demanded to spend with her "boyfriend".

Light gave a sigh as she literally glomped him and kissed his face. L just played with a bit of cake on the end of his fork, ignoring Misa's display of affection towards Light. It hadn't slipped those caramel eyes that L might be slightly jealous of Misa so he took her face lightly in his hands and pressed his lips against hers. He closed his eyes and pretended he was kissing L, but it was not the same; her lips were sweet and perfumed unlike L's sugary, sweet lips. Her lips were also much softer, but still he continued and Misa let out a squeal when their lips parted before grabbing his arm. L sat there uncomfortably; he knew he shouldn't be feeling anything towards Light, but what he had just witnessed made him angry more than anything he'd ever felt before. Right now, he wanted to get out of the room but with the chain only three feet long when fully stretched out, he couldn't even make it off the sofa. He knew it was his fault Light was acting this way. The teen continued to let himself been swept about by the blond in the room as she talked about her career. He sat on the sofa the opposite end from L and kept responding to Misa's questions with the odd "uhu". His mind was really focused on the strange dream he had last night and what he had done to L yesterday. It was over he kept telling himself and trying to believe it.

The afternoon seemed to go by slowly. He was shown picture after picture of Misa's modelling shoot, and eventually Misa had to return to her own private floor. She tried evading by taking her time kissing her boyfriend and making sneaky little comment, which L pretended never reached his ears and that the patterns on the china coffee cup he was holding were much more appealing.

"I'll see you, Lighty," Misa said, winking and blowing a kiss to him.

Light felt rather frustrated now; L was still ignoring him. He suddenly stood up.

"I need some fresh air." The detective looked at him with blank eyes. "Can we go up to the roof?" L answered him with a nod, feeling that some fresh air was needed after having to spend more than enough time needed inhaling Misa's perfume.

Together, they took the elevator to the top floor and then the stairs to the roof. Cool air struck them when they pushed to door outside open. Light wished that he had brought his sweater. Being cooped up in the tower day in and day out made one forget what the weather was like between seasons. L, on the other hand, did not feel affected by the chilly air at all. He walked closer to the edge of the building where a raised cement wall kept them from tripping and falling to their deaths.

"It's much earlier than I expected it to be," L said, lifting his hand up to block out the blinding rays of the setting sun.

"Really? I thought it would be earlier than this." He looked at his watch to see that it was not as late as usual. "It must be because of the seasons. It gets dark much earlier than the summer."

"Indeed it does." L turned facing his back to the sun so he would not have to shield his eyes. The rays surrounding him gave off the surreal sense of a heavenly figure descending from the heavens, or at least, that is the impression that Light first thought, but quickly shook it from his head. L was no angel, nor was he a devil. "Are you feeling okay, Light-kun? Your dream last night had me worried."

The teenager shook his head. "Don't worry about it. It was probably just stress from the case."

"Is it becoming too much for you?"

"Even if it was, you'd still make me work on it."

"True."

There was a pregnant pause between them. Light stared at L's stomach, then back to his face. He took one step closer so that he and the pregnant detective were intimately close. "I need to ask you something."

"What is it, Light-kun?"

Chilled hands cupped the porcelain like cheeks. Light leaned in, slowly, afraid that L would turn away again, but he did not. Timidly, he pressed his lips to the other man's, feeling their noticeable difference from Misa's. L's lips were slightly chapped. He pressed a little more firmly against him, keeping his eyes closed so as not to risk seeing L not liking it; but still the detective did not push him away. Those lips tasted faintly of whip crème from L's previously consumed cake.

He didn't want to, but he knew he needed to pull away. Slowly, he removed his lips from the detective's and lowered his hands from his cheeks. L's eyes opened and his large onyx eyes stared at Light, or stared into him.

"Ryuuzaki," Light said, speaking very carefully, "You have to let me know and please be honest; did you feel anything in that kiss? Anything at all?"

He waited patiently and impatiently for L's answer. For a long while, the detective just simply stared incredulously at him. The sun was now almost fully below the horizon and what was left of the evening light did not reach them on the roof.

"No," L said, his voice low, "I recieved nothing meaningful in that kiss."

He spoke it so bluntly and harsh. Light expected to feel some sort of hurt or heart break, but instead...he felt nothing. Not anything at all. As if he had simply asked L if he were cold and he said no. It was...bizarre. In just a short amount of time and all that they had been though...could he possibly be over L? Had the pregnant man's constant pushing away finally pushed Light far enough that he did not even care anymore? It seemed like it.

"Okay," he answered.

And that was it. There was nothing left between them. To him, L was just a detective now, not a lover. He was pregnant with his child, but who was Light to have any say in it?

He just didn't care anymore.

"It's cold," he suddenly said, "We should get inside."

Monday started off as a dull day, the wind blew hard causing the rain to tap at the windows. Grey clouds hung in the air making the investigation room seem darker than usual. Light was staring out the window at the other tall buildings, anything to get his mind of the pregnant male next to him. L seemed a little on edge this morning after he'd eaten his high in sugar breakfast, he kept biting at the skin around his fingernails. Light turned to his screen and focused on the case once again.

"I found another strange death in favour of Yotsuba!" he said enthusiastically as he was starting to feel more progress on the case was being made now he and L were no longer distracted by each other, "A manager of Yotsuba's biggest bank rival slips at home on his stairs, falls and dies on September 7th."

"September 7th was on a Friday, right?" Soichiro Yagami said, coming over to them with some reports in his hands, "I found it through careful reexamination but it seems most of the deaths that are beneficial to Yotsuba appear to be happening at weekends."

"Really?" Matsuda's eyes widened.

"Not at first but gradually they've become more concentrated from Friday night to Saturday afternoon."

"This has to be a hint of some sort, father?" Light was pleased that his father had found such important evidence.

"I can't be losing to you and Ryuuzaki just yet. Besides, I don't want to be a burden to this place," the ex-chief of police joked.

Then L spoke up. "We don't know if Kira is in within the Yotsuba group or manipulating them somehow, but let's assume these deaths are Kira's handiwork. We should begin to examine Yotsuba thoroughly." And just on queue, Mogi appeared with a mountain of paperwork in his hands which he set down next to L. Mogi was usually quiet, yet he was very helpful.

"Here's the list of Yotsuba employees in and out of the country you asked for," he grumbled in a low voice.

"Thank you very much."

"Wow, you already have over 300,000 people," Light exclaimed as he watched the detective take off the top few papers and begin to examine them with expert precision. "You're amazing, Mogi-san!"

Matsuda jumped to his feet after hearing L praise Mogi. "Ryuuzaki, is there anything I can assist you with?"

L eyed him and thought about what Light has said earlier to him. "If you want to make yourself helpful then would you care to get me some more coffee? Our guests will be wanting some, too."

"Huh?"

Everyone spun round to see two strangers sitting in the stylish green sofa's under the stairs.

"Who are they?"

"When did they get here?" Light asked.

"They are our new members." L replied.

A strawberry blond male dressed in a smart suit and a bleach blond woman wearing a tweed jacket and glasses stood up. The man introduced himself as Aiber, a professional con-artist and the woman as Wedy, a thief.

"We're using a con-artist and a thief?" Yagami-san exclaimed.

"That's right. You can think of them as professionals of the underground. They are the type of criminals Kira would no so easily be able to find," L explained, "Aiber has excellent social skills, thus allowing him to get close to his targets. We will use him to investigate inside Yotsuba. Wedy is can break any lock, safe or security. As proof, she got in here without any of us even noticing."

"I see," Light said, "We need these kind of people if we're going to investigate Yotsuba and catch Kira. Let's work together and do this."
