Usagi was sad to see Shingo go to school the next day, something she never would have thought possible, and she wondered how she would fare without her sudden reliance on his calming presence. Somehow, she was finally realizing the great untapped potential in their relationship. He was her brother. Not only were they bound together by their new friendship, they were bound together by blood, a bond possibly stronger than even the one she shared with her senshi. Even if they told each other things, or did things to each other that caused turbulence between them, that bond would forever link them to one another.
After her brother left for school, Usagi tried to help her mother with cleaning the house. She thought she was probably more of a hindrance than a help, but her mother didn’t complain, or send her to do something else like she used to when Usagi unwittingly made more of a mess. She even helped her mother make lunch without any of the usual disasters her presence in the kitchen generally precipitated. Later that afternoon, she even attempted something she hadn’t done in years; she gave Luna a bath.
“I’m a cat, for your information! I don’t need a bath! I’m very capable of cleaning myself, thank you very much.” The dark charcoal animal shrieked.
And though Usagi was firm in her resolve to wash the stubborn cat, she hurried as much as she could, and brushed the little feline afterward until her anger was forgotten and she started to purr. The blonde carried her small friend into her bedroom and nestled her onto a cushion in a sunny spot on the window ledge. Usagi stroked her ears until Luna started snoring, a small smile playing on the girl’s lips.
Noting the time, Usagi decided to go for a walk to see if she could meet up with Shingo on his way home from school. Once she’d closed the door to her bedroom behind her, the crafty cat peeped an eye open and then bounded onto the bed and across to the phone. She quickly dialed Minako’s number. She got the girl’s voicemail, but that didn’t really matter. Luna left a short message to inform the leader of the inner scouts on Usagi’s sudden improvement and to remind her that she should still give the princess a few days to continue working things out before contacting her.
Worried that it might cause trouble for Shingo if his friends saw his big sister waiting around for him, and not wanting to do anything to jeopardize their improved relationship Usagi decided against walking the route he would use coming home, and drawing on her reserve of patience, she settled for sitting on the front steps instead.
Shingo smiled when he saw his sister waiting for him, and burst into laughter when her wistful expression morphed into a bright smile when she saw him. Who would have ever thought he’d see then day when Usagi was waiting around for him, happy when he showed up?
They spent the rest of the afternoon at the kitchen table, talking and watching their mother flitting around cleaning and cooking and reading surreptitiously out of a book that look suspiciously like a romance novel when she thought they weren’t looking. Shingo attempted to get some homework done as well, but he was really much more interested in talking to his newly reawakened sister than algebra, so he didn’t accomplish much. He asked about her job and her apartment in the city, and she was embarrassed when she realized he’d never been there. She told him that if he ever wanted to come and visit, he was more than welcome.
Dinner that evening was a new high point for the Tsukino family. Not one of them could remember a time when they had all gotten along so well. Usagi was beginning to find that she could truly enjoy the laughter and smiles of her family, that it wasn’t tainted by her ever present grief, like twisting a knife in a wound, like it had been before. She marveled on the speed of her recovery with Luna that night as they settled in to go to sleep. The little cat curled up beside her charge’s head on the pillow, yawning as she expressed her joy at the girl’s progress.
She stood in the attic, looking down at the box that contained her treasures. It was vivid, like she were really standing there. Strong arms circled her waist and she leaned back against the muscled chest that belonged to those arms.
“I’m so proud of you love. I knew you could do it.”
“I think I’m finally starting to remember, Mamo-chan.” She sighed, a quiet sorrow, a dull ache invading her body. “But I still miss you. I’m not sure I can really say goodbye. I still keep thinking about you.”
“I know, Usa-ko, but it won’t all happen at once. Besides, you’re allowed to think about me. I might be a little sad if you didn’t. But you shouldn’t think about me all the time. That’s what got you into all this trouble in the first place, isn’t it?” He teased, his warm breath tickling her ear.
“I love you Mamo-chan.”
“And I love you Usa-ko.”
She closed her eyes and smiled, allowing herself simple contentment in this moment without thought about what might happen when it ended. A slight breeze tugged at her loose hair, stirring her from her reverie. When she opened her eyes the attic was gone. She was standing on that familiar rooftop of the school once more. Somehow, she sensed that the arms around her were different too, leaner, but just as strong.
“Odango…”
Usagi jumped, nearly rolling on top of Luna as she turned to see the man behind her, still half immersed in her dream.
“Seiya!”
“What is it? What is it Usagi?” Luna mumbled as tears began to slowly course down Usagi’s cheeks once more.
“I dreamt about him again Luna, about Seiya. Why am I dreaming about him?”
The girl moaned in frustration. Guilt still weighed at her, and even if she had been able to surmount it, remorse was there waiting next in line. Seiya was gone and dreaming about another closed door in her life certainly wasn’t helping her maintain her recent and tenuous grip on happiness. Luna sighed, Usagi was so thick sometimes.
“Don’t you know Usagi?”
“I don’t want to know! I shouldn’t be dreaming about him at all.” She sat up, clutching her pillow to her chest. “Oh Luna, it was Mamo-chan. It was Mamo-chan in my dream and he turned into Seiya! I feel so terrible.” She fell forward, burying her face in the pillow. The cat pushed on her shoulder with her paws
“Don’t be silly Usagi. It’s not wrong to dream about Seiya; besides, you can’t control your dreams.”
The blonde simply shook her head. Luna was wrong, they were all wrong. She shouldn’t be thinking about Seiya like that. And even if she were allowed that, wanting him would only make her hurt more: another thing she couldn’t have. Anyway, even if he were somehow to return, he most likely wouldn’t feel that way about her anymore. She hurt him, probably more than she realized even now, when he’d left. Though she’d really only been fooling herself by pretending not to understand his final words to her, she knew he’d been declaring his feelings for her. But then she’d had Mamo-chan.
And now she had nothing. No, these thoughts were definitely a dangerous road for her to travel. She locked them up, pushed them away, and tried to forget all about them as she willed herself back into sleep.
