Chapter 10
Dusk was starting to settle over the hilly landscape Knight Demon had been following Black Renamon though for most of the day. It had taken them a few hours to get back here, and since then the dark fox had been leading him up and down the hills in a ,to him, completely random route as she talked about whatever come to mind. Anything from if he liked a butterfly she spotted to if he’d knew how to solve a rubix cub. Apparently she knew someone with one and was dying to solve the thing.
The only reason he didn’t think she was leading him around out here in circles just for the fun of it, was the fact he’d believed she was going to take him to see WereGarurumon. And that for the past hour she’d been heading more or less in one direction. In the distance he could see a grove of trees that they seemed to be slowly nearing.
Still with the sun going down he was beginning to wonder how much longer they had to go. He hadn’t any problems with traveling at night, he could see almost as well as during the day and guessed the fox wouldn’t have much issue with it either, but still would like to know.
“Are we getting close where we’ll find the werewolf yet?” He called out to the fox a little ahead of him.
Pausing for a moment the Black Renamon tilted her head to look at him. This had been the first time he’d out right asked about how long it would take to get to WereGarurumon. After a moment she gave him a grin and started walking backwards. “We’re closer then we’d been earlier.” She told him, oh so helpfully. ”Not afraid of the dark are you?” She asked in a teasing voice. “I’d think a big bad demon like yourself would feel more comfortable when it was night.”
“I’m not. I’d just like to know how long we still need to go.” He said simply. Black Renamon’s grin just got bigger though.
“Uh-hu.” She just hummed, looking amused. For a moment Knight Demon didn’t think she was going to give him a real answer to his question but she ended up surprising him. “We’re just a couple hours away now.”
Nodding his head in thanks Knight Demon followed the fox in silence as she turned to walk forward, her tail swishing behind her, and keep going. For now at least. She didn’t seem to be able to go for long without saying something. He had the feeling even when she needed to be quiet her mind would be bubbling with unsaid things. They’d only been walking maybe thirty minutes, much longer then he thought she’d last, before the fox slowed so she could walk next to him. Her eyes locked on his helmet she asked, “How can you see with that thing on anyway? You don’t just sense the world around you, do you? Like having a mental image of everything in you head?”
This question was more personal than any she’d asked before really, and he took a moment to decide if he wanted to tell her or not. “No, I don’t see like that.”
She waited a moment in hopes he was going to say more. He could see how much curious she was for an answer and it didn’t take her long to ask again. “Well how do you see with a bucket on your head? I don’t see any eye holes.” Reaching up she tapped on the metal for emphasis. He was at least a good foot taller than the fox so she tip toed a little to do it.
Catch the foxes paw Knight Demon turned his head to watched her. For some reason he was enjoying her curiosity a little. Under the helmet his eyes shone a little with amusement. He’d only meet her today but still he felt comfortable around her for some reason. He just didn’t’ feel he needed to be on constant guard with the fox. Letting go of her paw he said, “It’s not a bucket. It’s a helmet.”
Giving a little huff Black Renamon gave him a ‘no duh’ look as she drew her arm back. Then her expression changed. Tilting her head the fox looked at him as if she was trying to decide something. “I can’t tell if you’ve dancing around the question on purpose or not.”
Not answering Knight Demon just watched her and after a moment she seemed to twitch. It started on in her left ear but her tail seemed to join in quickly. It seemed she really was itching for straight answers. So he’d give them to her. Even if not the one she wanted. “I was doing it one purpose.” He smirked at her when she gave him a glare. It didn’t really have any bite to it though, and was quickly replaced with an expectant look.
“So you’ll tell me how you can see with it on?”
“I didn’t say that.” Knight Demon responded.
“You really are an evil and mean demon!” She moaned and her ears fell. Even her tail seemed droopy behind her.
They walked a long in silence for a bit, the fox seeming to be pouting. The look faded after a little while though, and a sly grin appeared one her face for a moment as she looked around then at the landscape. “You know. I think I was wrong about where WereGarurumon’s hiding at right now. I think we’ve been going the wrong way all this time. It might take us ages to meet up with him.”
Wondering how serious she was about the threat Knight Demon stopped to watch the vixen. She just gave him an innocent look, as if she’d not meant to lead him the wrong way all day. After a moment he reached up to take a hold of his helmet. It was a little difficult with his curved horns and took a good minute to do, but he removed his helmet.
For a moment Black Renamon forgot about her curiosity for the helmet and looked at him. She not expected him to take the helmet off. Like the rest of him the skin of his face was black. Even his lips where, thought they were a little lighter in shade. His facial structure was more elegant then the fox had expected. He looked a lot like the angel digimon she’d meet once. Even his hair made her think of the angel as the deep red strands where long and flowing. Maybe not quite as long as the angels had been but it was still similar in appearance.
There were things about his looks that where obviously demonic though. Like his crimson eyes, his more fang like teeth, clawed hands and feet and of course the bladed tail. His Beauty also had a more dangerous feel to it then she’d think an angel would have.
Caught up in staring at demon Black Renamon didn’t realize he was dropping the gray helmet on her head till he’d done so. “Oww.” She exclaimed rubbing her noise where the rim of the helm hand landed. After a moment though she seemed to forget about her snout as she looked around. “Oh… It’s like it’s not even on! Is the inside of it see through?” She asked pulling it off to look inside. Which it off though she could see the metal of the inside of the helm.
“I’m not really sure how it works. I just… I think it’s the same as an angel digimon helmet. I believe it’s made of the same kind of metal.” He said as he reached his hand out for it. She gave it back a little reluctantly, but she did return it.
Looking at the helmet he traced the etched demon mark on the front. The bat. He likely was the only one out there with angelic helmet that displayed the symbol of the dark digimon. Looking down at his red armor he wondered if it too was made of the same metal. The armor was incredibly hard to damage, so it wouldn’t surprise him even though it was deep blood red in color. He wondered, not for the first time, that if he was still in the digital world how the holy order would react to it. To what he now was. He’d likely never know as there was no way back to that world. Which was fine with him. He had too much he felt he needed to do here anyway.
With a little difficulty, thanks to his curved horns, Knight Demon put his helmet back on.
“Why do you wear it all the time?” Black Renamon asked looking at the helmet . “Is it because of how much a pain taking it on and putting it on looks?”
“Partly, but mostly as I’d have to carry it if I took it off. Easier to just wear it.” He said with a shrug, and motioned for her to start leading the way again.
“Doesn’t it make you head hot?” She asked as they started walking. “What about the rest of your armor? Does it get hot too?”
“No the armor doesn’t heat up much.” He said grateful for the fact. “And before you ask,” He said as she opened her mouth, “I’m wearing it as I don’t have anything else to wear.”
“That’s why I like having fur. Don’t need to worry about clothing.” She said a little smugly, and flicked her fluffy tail at him. “We likely should get you a change of clothes thought…” she murmured. “You might look a little less imitating out of the armor.”
Knight Demon agreed with her about that, he was a little tired of scaring humans and digmon alike with his appearance. And he didn’t think going naked most places would be a good idea. Most digimon likely wouldn’t care too much, but he was sure the humans would. He’d considered getting something to changing into before this, but hadn’t the funds to do so, and hadn’t wanted to steal or frighten a shop owner into giving him things. “I wouldn’t be against something to change into.”
“Great! Then leave it to me.” She sounded a little too happy at the prospect and Knight Demon wondered if maybe he should have said he was fine with just him armor… The fox’s grin and thoughtful look made him wonder just what she was planning. Noticing he was watching her she smiled up at him, “Do you like your cloths a little tight or a bit loose?”
…
It was close to midnight when the two found themselves on a hill top looking down at a sprawled out, but yet still orderly encampment of tents. Most were smaller, only big enough for one or two people to share, but there were a couple larger tents two. One of which seemed to be in the center of the encampment. He thought it was likely where they discussed things as it didn’t look like anyone was sleeping there.
He got a moments warning that something was happening, in the form of Black Renamon suddenly using her teleportation ability to move far away, and pulled his attention away from the camp just in time to realize something was coming at him fast from the left. All he had the chance to do was bring up his arms to guard himself from the strong kick aimed at his unprotected stomach. The force of the attack threw him back and on the ground.
Knight Demon rolled to the right, just in time to avoid the white furry leather wrapped claws that gorged earth where he’d been. Whipping his bladed tail out he forced his assailant back long enough to get his feet back under him and to see who he was facing.
Crouching not far away, ready to spring at him again any moment, was a white furred werewolf with blue strips that was wearing a pair of warn looking cut off blue jeans. While both his hands had a little leather wrapped around them, on his left hand he also wore a spiked bronze knuckle duster and his muscular arm was covered with a dark leather sleeve attacked to a shoulder guard. He had a leather strap across his otherwise bare furry chest to help keep the shoulder guard in place.
‘Why does everyone I think about joining up with want to fight me?’ Knight Demon couldn’t help but wonder as the two watched each other. To be far he knew he’d antagonized Mystimon by questioning how he’d treated the human boy, and by stating his dislike of slavery. He couldn’t think of anything he’d done to make the WereGarurumon attack him though. Maybe he just didn’t like visitors?
He didn’t have time to think about it though as the werewolf was coming at him again, his left hand drawn back to throw a punch with his Knuckle buster. Thanks to his speed and agility Knight Demon was able to dodge the attack, and the next few. He was reluctant to fight back though as he’d come here looking for an ally, but it was becoming increasingly clear just dodging wasn’t going to work.
Almost to prove he couldn’t dodge everything, one of the wolfs punch’s slammed hard into his armor. He was uninjured but once again was thrown to the ground from the pure power behind the attack.
“I didn’t come here looking for a fight.” He said irritably from the ground as rolled trying to get out of the way of the follow up attack he was sure was coming. “But I won’t let just give you the fight or run away.”
“Show me what you’ve got then.” WereGarurumon growled out, speaking for the first time. As he spoke though, the look in the wolfs eyes changed. Till now they’d been focused, looking for any weakness to exploit. Not that the werewolf still wasn’t full focused on him, just that the look now seemed different somehow. Less like he was out of blood.
Knight Demon wasn’t sure what the new look meant for him, but at the moment he wasn’t going to wonder about it. For one thing the werewolf had grabbed his tail as he was rolling to stop him for getting away. A moment later claws screeched against his red armor before finding his back.
He hissed in pain before letting out a deep throated growl as he twisted around and slashed out with his own clawed hands towards the werewolf’s chest. The wound wasn’t too deep but it still gave him the chance he needed to get free and distance himself a little.
Watching the wolfman he debated summoning his sword. This was his first real fight he’d had in what felt like ages, he didn’t count practicing alone or intimidating Mystimon and GrapLeomon as real fights. He was sure he’d win with it, but he didn’t hold back when he fought with his sword, Malice. It was almost as if he was unable to when he held the blade. He didn’t want to maim or kill the werewolf, not if he could help it. Knight Demon still hoped to speak with him, and even if that wasn’t possible now he didn’t want to stop him for freeing slaves as he’d been doing.
He was hardly helpless without his weapon though. Spreading his one wing that had been tucked close to his back till now he flapped it, sending a wave of hard as steel and razor sharp feathers at the werewolf. WereGarurumon unleashed some kind of blue fire attack that burned most of the feathers, bit still a few got through to add a few more cuts to the werewolf. He didn’t even flinch at the wounds though and charged at Knight Demon again.
Knight Demon needed a moment before he could fling more feathers, but flapped his single wing anyway as he jumped in to the air. He flew up a ways then hovered as he readied his next attack. If WereGarurumon was going to play with fire, he didn’t see any reason he couldn’t too. A small flickering, but bright orange flame appeared on the tips of each of his clawed fingers, as well as along the edges of blade on his tail. Below him he heard a laugh and looked down.
Below the Wolfman was crouched down a little, and Knight Demon narrowed his eyes. He had to be trying something. “Flying with one wing. Nice trick demon.” The werewolf called up to him.” But you should have flown up a little higher.”
Knight Demon’s eyes widen as WereGarurumon sprang off the ground, leaping up into the air after him. Holding up his right hand the flames over each claw combined and grew into a fire ball about a meter in diameter. He flung it down at the leaping wolf. While he had no time to defend against the fire ball and was hit head on, the momentum of WereGarurumon’s jump carried him though the fireball just enough for his to grab Knight Demon’s ankle and drag him back to earth with him.
Both digimon hit the ground hard on the grassy hilltop, and where left dazed for a moment. The werewolf on his back with the armored demon sprawled out on his stomach next to him, his single black wing spread out over the wolf. Knight Demon recovered first. He felt the instinct to strike the werewolf while he was down, but instead attempted to pull his ankle free as WereGarurumon still had a hold of it. As he tugged though the grip tightened and the wolfmans other hand grabbed a hold of the wing spread across his body.
The moment his wing was grabbed, Knight Demon froze. Heart pounding from a fear he’d thought he had under control. He feared for his remaining wing. A phantom pain dug into his shoulder where his second wing would have been, had he still had a right wing.
…
WereGarurumon of course noticed the demon had frozen, but didn’t know why. He took the opportunity he’d been given though, to roll the two of them over so he could pin the demon to the ground. He sat on Knight Demon’s stomach, one hand holding down the bladed tail while his legs pressing the demons arms to his sides. He’d let go of the black wing which was now spread out on the ground. “What happened to not giving me the fight?” He asked looking at the black demon trapped under him. Though he couldn’t see the fear that was fading for the demons eyes, thanks to the helmet, he could smell it.
He didn’t understand where the fear came from. He’d startled the one winged demon a few times in the fight, but not scared him. What had caused him to freeze like that? He looked at the black wing spread out over the grass to the left of them. Did it have something to do with him grabbing the wing?
His gaze was drawn from the glossy black wing and back to Knight Demon as he squirmed a little, testing how well he was trapped.
“I hadn’t meant to let you pin me down.” Knight Demon said as went still again. Looking up at the wolfs singed and slightly burned face he asked, “What know?”
WereGarurumon supposed it was true he’d not frozen up on purpose, but was still a bit irritated with the end of the fight. At first he’d attacked the armored demon as a test to see why he was here. A lot of people would like to see him gone, so he’d had a few assassins attempt to do him or Zephyrmon in. He figured if he greeted new people by attacking them he could weed out those after his blood. He guessed they’d either fight to kill him or try running.
Normally he’d have stopped the fight when he was sure he wasn’t facing someone wanting to kill him. He’d realized that quickly that the demon didn’t want to kill him by how he’d gone purely on the defense at first. He’d felt the declaration that the demon would let him win or run a challenge though so had keep fighting.
“You can tell me why you’re looking for me.” WereGarurumon suggested.
Knight Demon nodded and started to do as told, “I thought we could work together. From what I’ve heard about you I’m guessing you’d want to end human slavery right? I want to see that happen too. We were never meant to rule over them. We were never meant to be on earth at all.”
What the demon said was true, WereGarurumon wondered at why he seemed to care though. There was plenty of ‘dark’ digimon on earth, like Black Renamon, but not a lot of actual demon digimon had crossed over when the barer between the worlds had failed. From what he knew most that where here didn’t really care what had happened. Either viewing humans as week so it being their own fault, or only caring about things that directly concerned them.
“Why do you care?” WereGarurumon asked as he got up, freeing the demon.
Sitting up Knight Demon flexed then folded his wing against his back before answering. “Isn’t it enough that I do?”
“I suppose it is.” WereGarurumon agreed then offered him a hand up. “Come on, let’s go get patched up.” Knight Demon hesitated for a moment before taking his furry hand. Once he was up the wolfman lead the way down the hill towards the camp.
“Oh, I almost forgot to ask, what should I call you? I’m not sure what kind of demon digimon you are.” WereGarurmon asked looking over his shoulder.
Knight Demon looked over at the werewolf and simply said, “I’m a Knight Demon. So calling me that’s fine.”
“A Knight Demon, huh.” WereGarurumon said thoughtful as he looked back at the tents. He thought if the demon really was a knight having him around might be interesting.
