“What is the meaning of this, Katherine?” He had snatched her up by the arm and dragged her downstairs where Ray and Lindsay were waiting. Katie held her head high and wouldn’t back down.
“It is not what you think, Dathan. D and I are business partners, not lovers. Your dear sister’s virginity is still intact.”
“And how can I believe you now? And what do you mean by business partners? What is going on? I demand to know!!” Her brother appeared to be losing an internal battle of self-control. His face started of blotchy, then became completely red. His anger stung Katie, but she knew now was the time to stand up for herself.
“If you will sit down and calm yourself I will tell you!” Katie crossed her arms and waited for him to gain some control. He practically fell into a chair and motioned for Lindsay. “Get me some brandy, dear.” His wife hurried away and Ray sat opposite of Dathan, feeling guilty and out of place.
“I was waiting until you were married to tell you. I wanted someone to be here to take care of you so you would not be so lonely in this big house. You know I am different Dathan. I always have been, even before the vampire took me as a child. He told me what I am and what I could be.”
At this point, Ray turned pale as a ghost and gawked at her.
“This life that you want for me is not what I want. I want to be free! I want to go where I please and hunt those creatures that prey on the innocents. I want to protect humanity. I cannot do that wearing a dress and blushing at men and acting prim and proper.”
“My God, what would father say?” Dathan put his hands over his face. Lindsay came back in with his drink and froze at the scene before her.
Katherine was growing flustered now. “Father is dead, so stop throwing him in my face! I do not need you to take care of me anymore! I am no longer a child. And I think father would be proud that I am doing what I want with my own life. We are but dust in the wind, petals on a flower, temporary beings. Our lives are so short and I will not waste mine being miserable in this house any longer!”
“I forbid it! I forbid you to take off with that dhampir and get yourself killed! What are you thinking?” Dathan was on his feet now, his temper in full throttle.
But she had temper to match his. She scoffed at him. “Forbid me? Who do you think killed the beasts and vampires in the forest behind our very house? Who do you think has been killing monsters all over this area for the last two years? And under your very nose!”
Her anger could be felt throughout the room, it fairly tainted the air. Dathan slumped back in his chair, his eyes nearly bugging out of his head at what she was implying. Lindsay backed behind Dathan in fear. Katie’s presence was almost overwhelming. Her eyes showed a tinge of red as she said, “Why, you yourself are horribly interested in my work. You spoke of me last night to D. Yes, dear brother, I am the Scarlet Hunter!”
Lindsay dropped the glass and the liquor spilled all over the rug. It was Dathan’s turn to pale now.
“No, not you! It isn’t possible. You don’t mean it, you would not leave me?” His voice became gentle and he began to plead. “Do you hate me so much you want to leave me?”
Katherine’s anger subsided and she approached her brother, laying a hand on his as he gripped the sides of his chair. “No, brother. I love you and I want to protect you and yours. I want to help make a future where your children will not fear the coming night as we do. I want my nieces and nephews to grow up safely in a monster-less world. That is why I go, to change the world as best I can in what little time I have. And if I die as a result, then at least I was doing what I wanted.”
“This is that damn dhampir’s fault! He talked you into it! He seduced you!”
“No, Dathan. Actually, he tried to talk me out of it as well, at first. He is my dear friend so please do not speak ill of him. We have been pursuing a vampire together for a while and when we have killed him we will part ways. Until then, you should rest a bit easier knowing I have someone watching my back.”
“You’ll be killed!” Lindsay gasped.
“You have heard of my reputation. I have yet to fail,” Katherine stated. She knelt down in front of Dathan. “I will be alright. I will come see you when my travels lead me near. Let us not part in anger brother.” She extended her hand for him to take.
Dathan’s eyes betrayed his emotions: he was astonished and sad. “This is the price I pay for trying to force a man on you. You are really leaving me? But then again, you were never really here in the first place, were you? The dear little sister I knew was merely an illusion. Your world has always been so far away from mine. I cannot say I am happy, Katherine, but if the rumors are true then you are exceptional at what you do.” He rubbed his head and brushed her hand away. Katie was hurt, but not for long. He pulled her up and hugged her tightly. “Be safe my dear. I will wait for you to come see us, and the future Clemmons.”
They watched her leave the next morning. She never looked back as she rode away; her brown clothing blending into the trees of the forest. Her red hair flying behind her was the last thing they saw.
“I cannot believe you let her go,” Lindsay clutched her husband’s arm.
“I had no choice; she has made up her mind. And when Katherine makes up her mind, that’s it. Besides, I think she will be okay. That Vampire Hunter will watch out for her.”
Ray stood behind them, silent. The young man’s face was pale, his eyebrows pinched together in concern.
“Happy Birthday, dear sister.” Dathan smiled. “Perhaps this was the best present I could ever give you.”
D was alone in the ruined castle, kicking aside pieces of rubble and inspecting rusted bits of metal.
“She’s just slowing you down. You’d have killed Psuedo by now if you weren’t catering to that girl and her dreams,” a rough voice whispered.
“She’s an interesting character to watch and I’d like to see how her life as a Hunter plays out. She is the perfect union of vampire and human. She hasn’t my strength but she doesn’t need blood either. If not for her fighting spirit, she could actually live amongst them.” D grew silent when he heard a noise behind him. He turned; hand on the hilt of his sword. Katie was standing there in her Hunter garb; face covered and sword at her side.
“I am free.”
