Chapter 10: Kenshin (Devotion)
The room was filled with rapid gun fire, people fell to the floor with blood flowing from them. Muffled thumps and curses added to the noise filling the air. Yuki stared at the boy in his arms for a moment before something snapped him free of his torturous thoughts, he stood slowly allowing Shuichi to be tended to by Sakano who lifted the boy and moved him out of the way. Yuki's hand dropped to his side where this time an imported Browning BDM semi-automatic pistol rested, there were now many men in the room, and he had his choice of victims. The man who had shot Shuichi had taken cover behind the seats and Yuki watched him peer around the edge of his protection. He aimed and pulled the trigger, a look of shock froze on the man's face as his brains splattered the walls and he fell back.
Spinning around he began emptying his magazine and quickly reloaded. Men fell in pools of blood. The rapid fire began to peter out as the enemy were taken down. Yuki looked around and saw, scattered amongst the bodies were silver knives, he had seen no sign of Sakuma but he had obviously been helping them. The place was filled with corpses, Tohma stood in the centre of the room his breathing heavy and his eyes rose to meet Yuki's. Fury engulfed his senses and he lifted his weapon, aiming it directly between Tohma's eyes. The older man didn't flinch, he just stared with a stony coldness that couldn't be imitated. "You bastard!" Yuki hissed. "You knew this would happen! You knew they'd kill their hostage if you killed yours! What the fuck were you thinking?" Yuki's voice was loud and everyone had frozen. Sakano tried speaking but Yuki sent a glare his way and he shoved his glasses further onto his nose, his fingers wrapped around the handle of his own gun. K looked unsure what to do, his eyes were flicking between the two, nervously. Yuki stepped close to his brother in law and pressed the gun to his head, Tohma looked up into his eyes calmly.
"You cannot harm me, Eiri." He said quietly, his voice full of confidence. "The boy was a necessary casualty, he..."
"Shut the fuck up!" Yuki shouted. His voice wavered slightly and his eyes shone with unshed tears. "He was INNOCENT!" he screamed.
"I'm with Yuki-san on this one." A quiet voice said from the shadows, Hiro stood with his arms folded, blood splattered his face and the gun he had been given rested in his belt. He had been in the action but standing well back. His voice was calm, the only thing that gave away his fury and grief were his eyes which burned in his pale face.
Yuki turned back to Tohma and glared at him. "He died because of you! You..."
Pain shot through his hand. Yuki dropped his gun with a curse and looked at his hand, a knife had buried its self in the back and blood ran down his fingers, he turned to see Ryuichi standing beside Hiro, no one was sure where he had come from. His sapphire eyes were bright, sparkling in the half light and his face was covered still. "Be careful, Yuki-san." He said softly. "I can't allow you to hurt Tohma."
Yuki took a shuddery breath and quickly tore the blade of his hand, which had become numb. "Fuck!" He screamed fell to his knees.
"Um...if I may interrupt?" The nervous voice of Sakano broke the silence. "Shindou-san is still alive...he's just badly hurt, if I could make a suggestion...He should go to hospital."
The author felt his heart skip a beat and he jumped to his feet, quickly followed by Hiro. They knelt beside Shuichi's body and Hiro quickly called the ambulance. K tore the phone from his hand and hung up on them, his head shaking from side to side. "Think about what you're doing, Hiro." He said softly. "I know where we can go, get him into the car, I'll phone the cleanup crew."
Hiro went along with it, he had very little choice. Even when the car was filled with uncomfortable tension. They finally reached a house and pulled up outside, K jumped out and rang the bell, his eyes darting up and down the quiet street. The door was opened by a woman, her hair tied back in a bun and an apron around her waist. She eyed K suspiciously. "Hello, is your husband home? I'm an old acquaintance."
She nodded and called through the house. "Arata? There's someone here to see you!"
A man appeared in the hall way, he wore a crisp white shirt with the top button undone and had a pair of glasses on. He took one look at his guest and paled. "K-san..." He muttered, his eyes slid to the black car outside his house and he took a step back before turning to his wife. "Dear, could you get the children and take them to your sisters? It'll only be for a few days..."
"Why?" She asked, her eyes narrowed suspiciously.
"Just do as I say!" Her husband snapped and she went to do exactly as he had asked. "K-san, your visit is...most unexpected...what brings you here?"
"I wouldn't disturb you unless it was an emergency, Abe-sensei..." K said gravely. "May we come in? It's not good to discuss this on the doorstep."
"Ah." Abe said and stepped back. He let K pass by and saw the car doors open and several people get out. One was carrying a bundle...the bundle had legs. As they drew close he could see blood staining the blanket and he gulped. He recognised Seguchi Tohma and Sakuma Ryuichi and even the long haired guitarist from some popular band his daughter was into. They all traipsed into his house and he led them into the living room.
Shuichi was laid upstairs and Abe began inspecting the unconscious boy, his hands shook ever so slightly and he pulled the singers tattered shirt away from the wound. "He needs the hospital...I...don't have the equipment..."
"You know as well as we do he can't! If the press were to discover this it would mean the end of NG and everything we've worked so hard for, please, Abe-sensei, do what you can." K said softly.
The doctor chewed his lip before nodding reluctantly. "I will try...I became a doctor to save lives..." He muttered before ordering everyone out of the room.
Yuki sat downstairs with his head in his hands. Blood still spattered his clothes and he was shaking almost imperceptibly. Hiro paced slightly, his arms wrapped around himself and he chewed his lip with worry. Ryuichi stood perfectly still by Tohma's shoulder. He was worried about Shuichi, it was his fault he had been kidnapped and hurt, however, he did not allow any emotion into his face.
The silence was almost painful and the tension in the room almost unbearable, each person was lost in their own thoughts. Yuki kept his head bowed as he prayed for Shuichi's survival. After hours of the awful tension the living room door opened and K stepped inside, he looked pale and his eyes showed his exhaustion but he smiled weakly. "The kids gunna be alright." He said and Yuki stood abruptly.
"Can I see him?" He asked in a croaky whisper, he hadn't spoken since before they'd left the club.
"I think so, but he's still unconscious...it'll be a little while before he wakes up." K replied but Yuki was already striding past him and disappeared from the living room.
Tohma watched him leave and sighed heavily. "I honestly think he was going to kill me." He whispered hoarsely.
"He wouldn't have had a chance." Ryuichi replied, his voice was softer than silk but the evident threat was obvious.
"Stop." Tohma said firmly. "I have told you, if something happens to me Eiri's safety is your next priority...do you understand?"
Ryuichi tensed. "Yes sir." He muttered darkly, his blue eyes glittering coldly under the lights. He would obey, however, he would do it with massive reservations. He did not owe the same loyalty to Yuki as he did Tohma, the man was not cut out to become Tohma's replacement. However, he fought the urge speak his mind, now was neither the time nor the place...there was no acceptable time to say many of the things he kept hidden in the darkest corners of his mind. All the hatred, the jealousy and other unpleasant thoughts considering the blond author he kept hidden away from even his boss.
Yuki found the right door and pushed it open, he saw the doctor slumped in a seat, blood covered his hands as he washed them in a bowl of water. He looked up, his glasses flashing in the light and a small, nervous smile crept onto his face. "Yuki-San...He is stable, for now. I wouldn't recommend too many visitors until he is stronger but...he has an intense desire to live. If it wasn't for that he would never have made it."
Yuki suddenly bowed very low. "Thank you, sensei..." He whispered gently. "You saved his life and I owe you a debt of gratitude..."
"You owe me nothing, Yuki-sensei!" The doctor exclaimed as he stood shakily. "I only did what I would do for anyone else who was in trouble and needed my help."
"Still...If there's ever anything you need, just call me." He straightened and took the doctors hand in his own, sliding a card into the man's hand. The doctor looked at it and read the numbers, he nodded.
"I will take it into consideration." He said with a small smile. "Now, I must attend to the other guests, please, make yourself comfortable and if there is anything you need just call."
Yuki bowed again as the man left. He turned and went straight over to the bed, he looked down and felt his heart clench painfully in his chest. Shuichi's face was pale, almost white and he had both hands resting on the coverlets, Yuki reached down and grabbed one of those hands and felt a pang of grief as he realised how cold they were. He lifted the fingers to his lips and kissed them gently. With his free hand he stroked strands of bubblegum pink hair from the boy's peaceful face. "Don't ever scare me like that again!" he said softly. "Shuichi..." he sighed the boys name and saw his brow crinkle and he moaned quietly his head turning to the side as his eyes flickered. Yuki's hand tightened convulsively on those of his pink haired lover and he half stood as Shuichi's eyes flickered open to reveal those huge purple irises. He blinked slowly, looking slightly dazed and confused, then his face crumpled in pain and he gritted his teeth.
"Y-Yuki?" He muttered.
"You're awake!" The author gasped and slumped back into his seat. He lowered his head so golden strands of hair covered his eyes and his shoulders tensed. "I-I'm sorry." He whispered roughly.
"What for?" Shuichi asked, his head cocked to one side. He didn't dare move, his body ached and he was so tired he probably couldn't have even if he'd wanted to. He had no idea where he was and his memories were blurry and rough around the edges, even though he had a pretty good idea of what happened. "Yuki...It's me who should be apologising!" He said desperately, crystalline tears filled those gorgeous eyes and he let them slide down his cheeks.
"No! No...It's me...I-I...let you get involved...I should have...I should just left! I'm dangerous!"
"Yuki!" Shuichi said suddenly, his voice was sharp, a tone he rarely used and yet had all the more impact for it. Yuki looked up and blinked, shocked by the harshness in his lovers voice. Shuichi had tears flowing down his face and his eyes were so dark they looked almost aubergine in colour. "Stop talking! Let me...Let me say this!" He stopped as his voice broke and he lifted his hands and covered his face, hiding from his boyfriends gaze. "I'm so...Sorry..." he choked. Yuki opened his mouth to tell him not be stupid but Shuichi shook his head desperately. "I need...I need to say this! It's...It's eating me up!" he took a sharp breath and closed his eyes, swallowing his fear he spoke in a soft monotone. "Those men...The one's who kidnapped me...They hurt me." He slowly opened his eyes and reluctantly met Yuki's. "I...let them have sex with me." He whispered in a dead voice. His eyes were blank, dark and held none of his usual sparkling joy.
Yuki was rooted to the spot. His fingers gripped the chair he was sat in so tightly his knuckles were white, he gaped as his lover. "They raped you?" He asked in a breathy whisper, remembering his lover's screams on the phone. He had assumed they'd beaten him, but now he thought back on it, it made more sense that they had hurt him in much deeper way. Shame filled Shuichi's eyes; they were too dark...too much like his own. Yuki shuddered violently and opened and closed his mouth, shock rendered him speechless.
Shuichi watched the author as he struggled with the information. Yuki didn't seem to understand what he had been saying. Yes, he had been raped, but in the end he'd given in. Because they wouldn't have hurt him as much if he hadn't fought. He bit down on his lip nervously, waiting for Yuki to explode in fury. It never came. Finally the blond man looked down at Shuichi and took his hands in his own, he kissed the cold fingers and sighed. "Shuichi," He began, using the boys name to make him pay attention. "This is my fault." He took a shuddery breath and lowered his head, he couldn't look into those dark and disturbed eyes for much longer, they were crushing him. He could still see, in his mind's eye, his Sensei's dead and bloodied face staring up at him and he shivered again.
"No." Shuichi said and forced himself to sit up, ignoring the agony and moving closer to his lover. "I promise you, Yuki, it's not your fault. I guess...I'm always a victim." He tried to smile but it faltered and he took a shuddery breath. His fingers found Yuki's hair and he pressed his pale lips against the writer's forehead. "It's over now...we...we can move on. I-I'll get better and we can go back..."
"Can we?" Yuki looked at him, his own eyes were dark now as he was filled with grief. "Shuichi, I nearly lost you today...I couldn't go through it again! I-I...couldn't live with myself if you died...because...because you're a weakness! You're the one thing everyone knows I'd throw my life away to protect! S-So..." He looked away, keeping his fingers twisted in Shuichi's bright hair. He heard the singer's soft breathing catch slightly. "It's time..." He swallowed, this was harder than he thought it would be. "Maybe...It's time we finally broke up...Because if we stay together, they'll use you again! They'll use you to get to me and I can't stand the thought of getting you hurt again! What if they really do kill you next time?" His eyes returned to those pretty purple ones and he bit down on his lower lip as he saw silent tears flowing down Shuichi's cheeks.
"I-Is it...because they...they...r-raped me?" Shuichi gasped suddenly, his eyes widened and filled with fear, the tears streamed faster down his face as his eyes searched Yuki's for any sign that he was right. Dread and shame filled him and he suddenly felt filthy. He gasped and yanked himself free of Yuki's touch, even though pain ripped through his body at the sudden movement. "I-I'm sorry!" He cried and covered his face with his hands. "I-It's my fault! T-this...is the second time a-and you've had enough...I-I understand! But...Y-Yuki...Please, Please don't hate me! Please...!" he almost screamed the last words as his body shook violently.
Yuki stared, his emotions seemed to have disappeared. He couldn't leave Shuichi blaming himself for something that was never his fault! And yet, as he sat there in dumbfounded silence he couldn't speak. He had no idea what to say, he didn't even know what to feel. The men who'd hurt Shuichi were dead, so revenge was impossible, or had already been fulfilled depending on how one looked at it. Shuichi sobbed desperately into his hands and Yuki could almost hear the boys heart shatter, he flinched violently and suddenly stood. "Shu..." he gasped and the boy rocked slightly back and forth. He couldn't do anything and speech was beyond him. He swallowed and took a shaking breath before turning and walking away.
"Y-Yuki...!" Shuichi whispered through his tears. As he watched his lover walk away his heart shattered all over again. He was almost sick with grief, his mind hardly able to stand it. It was true, it was his fault Yuki didn't love him anymore! It was his fault because he'd been raped yet again. He was even more dirty than before and now Yuki had left in disgust.
