Heartfelt Interference
Chapter Ten
Age 15
Though you could have gone back home, you chose not to. It was a lot of energy that you didn't feel like you had left after the day's excursions. You had, however, called your parents on the pokegear to let them know you were camping out tonight. Of course you could hear the unasked questions in your parents' voices. You had skipped training today which they no doubt had heard about. And when you got home you were probably due for a strong conversation and reprimand. But for now you kept the conversation quick and easy. You didn't have the energy for anything more.
You huddled against a tree, trying to collect enough energy to go out and gather some firewood. There would be plenty in the tree filled area around you. It was just that you were so tired. The day of searching for Rorsh had taken it's toll on you in more ways than one. In fact, you were thankful for the fact that you hadn't started crying yet. Rorsh had been with you for five years. He was pretty much everything to you that a pokemon could be - he was your friend, your confidant, and your protector. But he was gone and you didn't know how to cope with the sudden loss.
If Nox minded how closely you held him, he didn't say anything. The warmth from his body and the feeling of his fur was comforting as you and he relaxed in the dark. Though his scent was different from when he was an eevee and you used to cuddle into him, it wasn't a bad difference. In a way he smelled sweeter and you vaguely reminded yourself that his sweat would be poisonous from now on. That passing thought didn't stop you from falling asleep with your cheek nuzzling up against his neck.
For his part, Nox tried really hard not to move as you fell asleep. He might not be a psychic type but he could practically taste the pain you were in. All because Rorsh had gotten his fur into a bunch and taken off. Stupid little twit. Nox hoped that if the lilac brat ever came back that he got close enough so he could bite him. He deserved that and so much more for what he had put you through today. Or so Nox believed.
One good thing did come out of this though. Once you were sound asleep, Nox shifted so he could bury his nuzzle into your neck as well. Though he had cuddled with you a lot over the last two years, he had done so in a child like state. As an eevee he had been small but as an umbreon, he was just as big as you were. He was just shaped differently is all. And despite the different shape Nox knew he was going to enjoy his new size. All the better to keep your attention all to himself with now that Rorsh was gone. Once you and he were back in a real bed, he could stretch out beside you and stop your nightly search for a pillow to drape yourself over.
His tongue flicked out and tasted your skin. He almost whimpered at the faint hint of fear he could taste on the tip of his tongue. It wasn't from right now of course, it was left over from the ghost pokemon in the cave. Nox knew that you had been afraid but it was a whole other thing to taste it on your skin. He never wanted to taste that again.
You shifted in your sleep; losing your hold over Nox. When your arms fell from around his body, Nox huffed in discontent. There were a few things he wished he could be human for. One of them had to do with the ability to maneuver you as he wanted. But it wasn't like he was suddenly going to sprout arms or anything so he had to make do. Nox used his tail to help lower your head down to the ground before he laid down beside you. A smile emerged over his sharp features as you slowly snaked a leg around him. Oh yes he was going to enjoy his new size.
Unfortunately, the night air was against him. While he was okay with all of his fur, you weren't wearing very warm clothes. Nox could feel the chill setting in on your skin. He knew enough of humans to know that getting too cold would be bad for your health. And it seemed that the body heat he could provide would not be enough with how exposed you were. With a frustrated growl, Nox rose up. He watched as your body slowly curled in on itself before he turned away. Nox knew exactly where he was going to go to get you some help which made the trip to the stables that much quicker.
It took some effort to lift the metal bar which kept the stable closed but he managed to do it. After trading a bit of sentiments with the ponyta, one which had been there since you had become his human, Nox headed back out. Even in the dark and at a dead run, Ponyta had no troubles following him. The new rings around his body glowed in the pale moonlight which undoubtedly helped the fire horse keep track of him.
When Nox got back to the impromptu camp he was relieved to find you where he left you. What frustrated him was that you were not how he left you. Instead of being alone, you were being covered by a pidgeotto. The bird pokemon covered you like you were an egg that had fallen out of its nest. Nox's red eyes, aglow in the dark like his stripes, narrowed sharply as he got closer. Just because you and he knew this pidgeotto, having met when she was a pidgey, did not give her the right to intrude on your care like a mother hen.
His growl was a clear warning as he moved closer. When he moved in closer the one scent he could pick up in particular made his fur rise on end - Rorsh. Even when he tucked tail and ran from reality, that espeon had to interfer. Which meant that he had to be nearby. With ears tucked back, showing his displeasure for the world to see, Nox looked around. After a thorough visual sweep he still couldn't spot the older eevolution.
"You're going to bruise her," Nox said in a low growl.
The pidgeotto hooted in displeasure. Apparently she thought that Nox was calling her the equivalent of fat. "No I won't! Besides, you're the one that left her to freeze!"
Nox shook his head as he motioned back towards where the ponyta was. "I went to get help. You swooped in on my human."
Pidgeotto shook her head, her feathers ruffling up. You groaned underneath her on the verge of waking up. The female pokemon did weigh sixty pounds and she was laying across you after all. While the body heat was nice to have the body weight, especially when it kept shifting, wasn't.
"She's a human, not yours," Pidgeotto chirped back.
Nox growled. "Yes she is."
Her wings spread out tauntingly, "Oh yeah? Then where is your pokeball?"
Maybe it was the fact that he was newly evolved or maybe all the stress of the day and night that finally did him in. Whatever the reason, Nox rushed forward intending to bite at Pidgeotto's throat. See if they were so pleased with themselves after that. Pidgeotto took to the sky only a fraction of a second before Nox reached her. When the weight suddenly left your body, you turned over and opened your eyes startled.
In the darkness there wasn't much that you could see. It wasn't until you looked to where the ponyta stood that you felt blinded. Their manes were made up of fire after all, and that fire lit up the area better than any torch. Once your eyes adjusted to what felt like blinding light, you finally realized that your eevee, now an umbreon named Nox you reminded yourself, was there as well. As you started to sit up, you found out that pretty much everything ached. You didn't know it of course but that was, in part, due to the fact that Pidgeotto had tried to keep you warm in a very avian fashion.
"Nox...where's Rorsh?" you called out, still completely drozy.
You watched as his head fell and he suddenly avoided your eyes. In that moment it was hard to breath or look away but you managed to do both, muttering only a single 'oh' as you stared at the ground. The situation seemed unreal. Rorsh had left; not only left but he hadn't returned yet. You had quite literally spent a whole day looking for him and yet you were going to have to return home empty handed. Tears threatened to build up in your eyes. The rejection stung something fierce. You had been so close to him that the thought that he didn't want to see you anymore hurt beyond words. Nox moved up towards you and rested against your side as you sat in place. Listlessly you ran your hand through some of his fur, staring out into the dark.
Ponyta rounded around the two of you and bent down slowly, as though any sudden movement was going to push you over the edge. For all you know it might have. It was hard to even feel like the situation was real much less know how you were going to respond to it. Almost like a form of shock had set in. Thankfully as Ponyta laid down and used their head to "gently" pull you back into their body, you had plenty of heat. Rorsh rested against the side of your body which wasn't covered by the fire horse's face. Some part of you could feel his sadness as well but it was like a distant recognition. You loved Rorsh with everything you had but he was gone.
Gone like never going to see him in the mornings again. Gone like no one pestering you to add more onions to the food. Gone like gone. And it was truly unfortunate that today wasn't even going to be the worst. After all, once shock wears off all that's left would be pain.
