Part Eleven : Painful Bond and Ancient Betrayal
The men sat in silence for a while. Gojyo tried to cap his emotions, why couldn’t they leave him alone? So, he could feel what he wanted to feel and do all the crying out he wanted to do. But no, they sat here gawking at him as he wanted to disappear. Gojyo was beginning to understand Sanzo’s need for solitude.
Hakkai stood up and located Gojyo’s clothing. He leaned over Gojyo and bent down, “We need to get you dressed.”
Gojyo felt Hakkai’s soft hand on his back and his emotional walls began to melt. He wrapped his arms around Hakkai’s shoulders and wept into the smaller man’s chest.
“Gods! Hakkai! I didn’t mean to hurt her.”
“I know,” Hakkai whispered back.
“I didn’t realize…”
“I know.”
“Damn it Hakkai, why….why?”
“I don’t know.”
More than anyone else, Hakkai could empathize with the deep pain of hurting a loved one. He carried the memory and pain of Kanan for years now and he still yet didn’t understand they why’s of the whole situation. Why’s cut deeper than any other. Why’s were the most painful. Why’s were the most difficult. Why’s never went away and could never be answered. Hakkai couldn’t answer his own why, and as much as he wanted to he couldn’t answer Gojyo’s why. Hakkai tightened his hug on Gojyo and whispered, “We still need to get you dressed.” He had to show Gojyo that no matter how dark things are, life goes on. Hakkai could only hope that Gojyo’s pain didn’t carry the same permanence as his own.
Gojyo pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes and sniffed. He didn’t care what anyone else thought of him, he was hurting damn it and he was man enough to show it. Gojyo slowly got dressed and sat back down on the floor. He fished out a cigarette and lit it.
He winced as he leaned his head and back against the dresser , that he now realized he’d been leaning against, and a heavy silence fell in the room.
Hakkai sat beside him and whispered, “Do you want some help with you back?”
Gojyo let out a thin stream of smoke, “No, I want to feel.”
Jorja knocked lightly on Scarlet’s chamber door.
Hakkai answered. “Come in.” His voice was polite , but far from his normal tone.
Gojyo saw the somber look on Jorja’s face and his chest caved. He pushed his face into his hands.
Jorja knelt beside him and whispered, “She’ll be ok. She needs solitude and time now.”
Gojyo looked in to her golden orbs. He saw the honesty in her eyes and let out a pent up exhale. The fact that he’d hurt her at all still weighed on him, but news of her pending recovery lightened his mood.
Hakkai was the most relieved of all. He didn’t want the two of them to share this kind of bond.
Gojyo took in a breath and softly spoke, “Can I see her?”
Jorja sadly shook her head, “No, this kind of healing must be done alone. Besides, we have a bigger problem.”
Sanzo cut his eyes toward Jorja, “A bigger problem?”
“Yes, Thea and Mikia are missing.”
Sanzo lifted an eyebrow, “Do you think they are together?”
The weight of betrayal began to sink in to Jorja, “I’m sure of it.”
Gojyo remembered his little sweetheart, and something just told him she was in danger. “Do you think they hooked up with Homura?”
“I’m sure they will.” Jorja sighed. This whole situation just got messier.
Hakkai studied Jorja’s face, “How will you locate her?”
Jorja shook her head, “I don’t know. Hopefully ,we will before it is too late.”
Sanzo rubbed the bridge of his nose. He couldn’t believe he was about to get further involved with the child. “Do you have any idea where to start looking?”
Jorja let out a huff, “You should know that your feelings for her are artificial. My nature is her nature. It manifests itself differently in young children, more innocently. That’s why you all have become so attached so quickly.”
Gojyo sneered Bullshit my feelings are artificial.
Hakkai nodded, “That explains a lot.”
Goku chuckled, “Yeah, like why Sanzo didn’t kill her.”
Sanzo cringed, “Shut up, monkey!” Sanzo turned his head toward Jorja and sighed. He knew if it was brought to a vote he’d be outvoted and for good reason. The child was too powerful to be trusted with Homura. “Where do we begin?”
“Mikia’s past.” Jorja stood up, “I suggest you take showers and get comfortable. I have to go have a talk with someone. I‘ll be a few days.“
